Ukraine has to stay neutral = Verkhovna Rada member criticizes statement of MFA

1022259.jpg 12:31, 18 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 18, ARMENPRESS. Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, author of the Armenian Genocide recognition resolution Anton Polyakov strongly criticized the statement of the foreign ministry of Ukraine over the border tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan. ARMENPRESS reports the MP wrote on his Telegram page that in the last days the confrontation between the two countries has escalated and there is a threat of real war.

‘’There was information that the Azerbaijani army is ready to strike the nuclear power plant of Armenia, which can lead to terrible catastrophe. I hope official Baku will be guided by health mind and will not allow activation of military operations’’, the MP wrote.

Anton Polyakov calls on the diplomats of the foreign ministry of Ukraine to take a rational position, because the senseless announcements in protection of one of the sides have already caused a serious diplomatic scandal.

‘’I want to remind Mr. Kuleba (Foreign Minister of Ukraine – edit.) that the main responsibility of his ministry is increasing the status of the country on the international arena, and not the contrary. There must be no provocations and mistakes. Ukraine must stay neutral’’, the MP wrote.

Earlier, another Ukrainian MP Darya Volodina strongly criticized the foreign ministry’s position, noting that the one-sided announcement over the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia is an indicator of professional incompetence.

Chechen President says he can kneel and ask for peace to Armenia and Azerbaijan

1022291.jpg 17:49, 18 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 18, ARMENPRESS. Head of Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov issued a statement over the situation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border. ARMENPRESS reports, citing the Telegram channel of Kadyrov, the Head of the Chechen Republic noted that his people know the price of peace better than anyone else, but they also know the grief caused by war.

‘’We know from our own experience that it’s better to prevent the war and spare no efforts for peacefully solving complicated issues. Today we see escalated situation on Armenia-Azerbaijan border. Both are brotherly countries for us. The tragic developments taking place there touch not only Russia, but they are painful for the entire Caucasus and CIS countries’’, Kadyrov said, calling on the conflicting sides, as well all the allied countries, to take measures for preventing this conflict.

‘’Everything must be done so as the sides achieve peace. Otherwise, if God forbid, this confrontation turns into a large-scale war, the tragic consequences will go beyond Caucasus. We remember the developments in Karabakh, how many lives that war claimed. And today again there are victims and the situation is escalated’’, Kadyrov said.

Referring to the possible eruption of a large-scale war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Head of the Chechen Republic said, ‘’There will be no winners. I am ready to kneel and ask the sides for the sake of peace’’, he said.

Artsakh Forces Down Azerbaijani Drone

July 18, 2020

Artsakh forces downed an Azerbaijani Orbiter-3 drone, which is made in Israel

Artsakh Air Defense units on Saturday shot down an Azerbaijani drone, which was on a reconnaissance mission in the northeastern direction of the Artsakh-Azerbaijan border.

The Artsakh Defense Ministry reported that at 6:38 a.m. local time on Saturday an Orbiter-3 unmanned aerial vehicle—drone. The Orbiter-3 is made by Israel’s Aeronautics Defense Systems, which was embroiled in legal and ethical controversy in 2017 when Azerbaijan reportedly forced the company’s technicians to test its equipment on live targets in Artsakh.

The elite units of the Defense Army continue to keep the situation on the border under full control, to confidently protect the air and land positions of the republic, the Artsakh Defense Ministry said.

This attempt to breach Artsakh’s airspace comes as Azerbaijani forces brazenly attempted to attack military and civilian targets in Armenia’s Tavush Province, resulting in massive losses for Azerbaijani forces, among them a high-ranking army general.

According to Armenia’s Defense Ministry, the situation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border is relatively calm and new attempts to attack Armenia have been reported.

Meanwhile, President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, on Thursday threatened to end the Karabakh peace talks, calling the international mediators, the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs’s efforts “meaningless.”

A day earlier, Baku threatened to attack the Metsamor Nuclear Plant outside Yerevan as retaliation for what it termed as “Armenian aggression.”

At the same time, in what seemed like a government sanctioned protest took place in Baku’s Azadliq Square, where an estimated crowd of 50,000 people called for an all out war against Armenia.

Also, after weeks of pressure on its foreign ministry, Aliyev fired his long-time foreign minister Elmar Mammadyarov, who had been a fixture at the peace talks since 2004. Aliyev appointed his education minister, Jeyhun Bayramov as the country’s new top diplomat.

China-Eurasia Council condemns aggression of Azerbaijan

July 19, 2020

By Newsroom

armenia-azerbaijan.jpg

China-Eurasia Council for Political and Strategic Research strongly condemns Azerbaijani aggression which Baku started on July 12, 2020. Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense is a threat for the entire World as it is speaking about its aims to strike Metsamor Nuclear Plant, which is located in Armenia. Baku must understand that this is a crime against humanity, and it is equal to nuclear strike. The destruction of Metsamor Nuclear plant will be a disaster not only for Armenia, but also for Iran, Georgia and Azerbaijan, it will harm World’s environment and stand a real problem for several generations of the World. It is worth mentioning, that this time Baku attacked the Northern borders of Armenia, which are sovereign territory of the Republic of Armenia according to International law. Azerbaijan violated the principle of territorial integrity of a sovereign state, which is one of the important pillars of International law.

China-Eurasia Council for Political and Strategic Research condemns Azerbaijan for using force against civilian population of Armenia and calls for peaceful negotiations. Baku must show solidarity and join global ceasefire initiated by the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres and must not try to escalate the situation on the border to deflect public attention from the situation concerning the outbreak of Covid-19 in Azerbaijan. We call official Baku to take care of Azerbaijani people in the hard times of Coronavirus and not send its soldiers to real death. Being multinational Council, for us It’s terrible to hear about lossfrom both sides and we express our sincere condolences. Hopefully peace will come to South Caucasus, which is an important crossroad in Eurasian mainland and it can stand a very important link for Belt and Road Initiative, if all problems solved in a peaceful way.

Russian war correspondent presents footage from Armenian-Azerbaijani line of contact
xRussian-war-correspondent.png.pagespeed

The WarGonzo project team was the first to manage to get as close as possible to the line of contact between the Armenian and Azerbaijani forces in order to take footage of the army dugouts and trenches, as well as the village of Agdam, where Azerbaijani mortars and artillery are located.

War correspondent Semyon Pegov noted that the Azerbaijani side is shooting right from gardens in the village to prevent the Armenian artillery from opening return fire, because, he says, civilians could suffer.

“This is not a priority task for the Armenian side. They [Azerbaijani armed forces] thus hide behind the civilian population,” the journalist says.

The team has also managed to find the point from where the Armenian Anvakh (“Fearless”) border post can be seen. The clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan started after the Azerbaijani side tried to take control of this combat position on July 12.

Politician: Turkey is mainly the one provoking escalation on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border
15:43, 20.07.2020

The subsequent escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was organized and mainly provoked by Ankara, not Baku. This is what leader of the Democratic Party of Armenia Aram Sargsyan told reporters today. According to him, Turkey has far-reaching plans in the region. “In the 21st century, they set forth a major plan that they intend to implement at any price. Turkey wants to consolidate Turkic-speaking nations around the world because consolidation will help Turkey become a geopolitical factor.

Turkey has started implementing this policy. It is showing its force in all possible ways and in the obscenest ways. The country closed its doors for Europe after converting the Hagia Sophia museum into a mosque. This is clearly obscene. Turkey is trying to invade Libya and has already seized Afrin, and nobody can stop it. Who is the Armenian authorities relying on?” Sargsyan said.

Armenia must actively be engaged in anti-Turkish fight to make the security threats coming from that country more visible: expert

Turkey’s threats to Armenia are not something new, but the rhetoric has become more radical and aggressive, expert from Hayatsk think-tank Hasmik Vardanyan told Aysor.am.

“The unconditioned assistance voiced by Turkey to Azerbaijan after the tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, including in military operations, contains nothing new for Armenia. Ankara assisted Baku in 2016 too when it unleashed war against Artsakh,” she said, stressing that Turkey periodically states about readiness to assist Azerbaijan in any way of settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Referring to the information that Turkey collects rebels in Syria to send to Azerbaijan, the expert said it is quite possible scenario in case of wide-scale military actions on Armenian-Azerbaijani and Artsakh-Azerbaijani borders.

“It is not a secret for anyone that a part of mercenaries fighting in Syrian are under Turkey’s control and after staying without “work” in Syria during the recent period, Turkey is transporting them to other countries, in particular to Libya, to solve its geo-political issues on site. On the background of the neo-ottoman policy carried out by Turkey and the promises given to Azerbaijan, the possibility of appearance of mercenaries from Syria in Azerbaijan is rather high,” Vardanyan said.

She noted that the threats voiced from Turkey are not just theoretical and may become a reality at any moment. The expert stressed that the Armenian diplomacy must consistently work to make it clear for the international community that the security threats Armenia faces from Turkey are real.

“Armenia must be actively engaged in the campaign of the countries fighting against Turkey’s destabilizing actions. We have demonstrated such activeness in Greek and Cypriot anti-Turkish initiatives, but we need to cooperate with Egypt, United Arab Emirates,” she noted.

“Armenia’s active engagement in anti-Turkish fight of the regional countries will not only make the security challenges coming from Turkey more visible to the world but will promote the boosting of the cooperation of countries engaged in anti-Turkish fight and increasing Armenia’s role in the region,” the expert concluded.

Spanish Congress member urges international community to react to Azerbaijan's aggression

1022417.jpg 15:38, 20 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Member of Congress of Deputies of Spain Marta Rosique i Saltor touched upon the recent events on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, urging the international community to react to Azerbaijan’s aggression.

“In the context of growing violence these days on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border I express my support to the colleagues of the Artsakh Republic. The international community should react to Azerbaijan’s aggression in support of human rights and the right to self-determination”, the Spanish lawmaker said on Twitter.

Since July 12th, Azerbaijan has launched a series of cross-border attacks against Armenia’s northern Tavush province, targeting civilian settlements and infrastructures.

Overnight July 19-20 the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has been relatively calm. The Azerbaijani side violated the ceasefire regime 9 times from firearms in different parts of the border, firing nearly 137 shots at the Armenian positions.

Garo Paylan addresses questions to Turkey’s MFA for overtly supporting Azerbaijan

1022451.jpg 18:21, 20 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 20, ARMENPRESS. Garo Paylan, member of Turkish parliament of Armenian origin, addressed questions to foreign minister of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu over Turkey’s overt support to Azerbaijan. Paylan mentioned that Turkey, an OSCE Minsk Group member state’’, should have demonstrated neutrality over the recent days developments on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. ARMENPRESS presents the full list of the questions addressed by Paylan to Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.

‘’Numerous servicemen and civilians died as a result of the recent days clashes between Armenia and Azerbaijan. While the sides were blaming one another for starting the clashes, you announced as a foreign minister that ‘’Armenia’s activities are unacceptable. Azerbaijan is not alone. We, as the Republic of Turkey and people of Turkey, stand with Azerbaijan with all our capacities.

Similar announcements were made by the president of Justice and Development Party and the Republic Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and defense minister Hulusi Akar.

Turkey, as a member state of the OSCE Minsk Group aiming to foster the settlement of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, should have made efforts to display will for the settlement of the conflict, but did not remain impartial during this escalation for tribal reasons and made statements that exacerbated tensions.

Therefore,

  • Is that for tribal reasons that you display biased position on Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict?
  • Haven’t you realized so far that tribe-based foreign policy is ‘’adding fuel to the fire’’ and does nothing else but worsens the situation?
  • Turkey’s military industry wants to sell more ammunition to Azerbaijan. Is this the reason why you try to exacerbate tensions?
  • Are you thinking of sending army to Azerbaijan?
  • If Turkey is not a tribe, why does it lead tribe-based foreign policy?
  • Do you at least time to time remember that Turkey is an OSCE Minsk Group member state, which was established for reducing tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan?
  • Have not you understood that that destabilization of Caucasus is in the interests of only Russia?
  • How would you comment on the threat of the defense ministry of Azerbaijan about their readiness to strike the nuclear power plant located on Armenia-Turkey border?’’ Paylan wrote.

Israel’s Supply of Weapons to Baku Threatens Alliance with Armenia
July 20, 2020

Artsakh forces downed an Azerbaijani Orbiter-3 drone, which is made in Israel

BY YARON WEISS

Israeli arms dealers doing business with dictatorial states has devastating consequences both internally and externally for Israel.

Last week Azerbaijan used Israeli-made missiles, drones and high-technology weapons to hit military targets and civilians in Armenia, resulting in loss of Armenian lives and damage to civilian structures such as schools and factories.

In Israel, it has been suggested that it is developing close relations with Azerbaijan, including the weapons trade, as part of a strategic military campaign against Iran. But I believe that this is a smoke screen for laundering arms trade with the dictatorial regime of Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan has a long border with Iran, the population of Azeris living in Iranian territory is double that of the entire population of Azerbaijan. Therefore, I don’t believe that the regime in Baku will endanger its people in Iran and its own political survival by forming a military alliance with Israel—Iran’s great enemy. The purpose of the arms deals between Azerbaijan and Israel is for improving Azerbaijan’s military competence against Armenia and enriching the cash flow of the Israel’s military industrial complex.

Azerbaijan continues to condemn Israel in every international forum, along with other Muslim countries around the world (including Iran).

So far, Azerbaijan has not opened an embassy in Tel Aviv, even though there has been an Israeli embassy in Baku since the early 1990s.

The Azerbaijani army used Israeli-made weapons to attack Armenia, an Israeli-friendly country that only recently announced its intention to open an embassy in Tel Aviv. The President of Armenia even visited Israel last January and met with top officials.

http://asbarez.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/45788038_10156743424942128_8452951351737974784_n.jpg

The author, Yaron Weiss, at an Armenian Genocide commemoration protest in Jerusalem

It is absolutely clear that one of the goals of Israeli weapons exports is to inject cash into the weapons industry in order to enable the continued development of military hardware for Israel’s Defense Forces. Israeli arms industries need weapons exports like oxygen to the body. They cannot afford to be dependent on the local market alone.

However, it seems that the security relations with Azerbaijan deviate from normal supplier-customer relations. It seems that Israeli weapons traders are trying hard to persuade their customers in Baku to purchase advanced types of weapons, that Armenia cannot get. (Azerbaijan’s defense budget is four times higher than Armenia’s defense budget).

The use of high technology weapons made in Israel by the Azerbaijani army is increasing the level of violence in the conflict by encouraging the Azerbaijanis to launch attacks against the Armenian army, knowing that it will be very difficult for them to defend. These include fire control systems, missiles, “suicide” drones and more.

The leaders of the Israel’s arms industries and its government are not showing solidarity and friendship toward Armenia—an ally of Israel.

Therefore the Israeli society won’t be surprised that there is no friendship and solidarity among themselves, as reflected in the most precarious social situation in recent times.

Yaron Weiss is an activist and writer based in Israel. He is a staunch advocate Armenian Genocide recognition by Israel. He has traveled extensively in Armenia and is a frequent contributor to Asbarez.

Reporter Shows Azerbaijan Using Civilians as Human Shields

Russian war correspondent Semyon Pegov of the War Gonzo Project was the first journalist who managed to get as close as possible to the Armenia-Azerbaijani border last week, when Azerbaijani forces brazenly attacked military and civilian targets in Armenia’s northeastern Tavush Province.

In footage released over the weekend, Pegov details how Azerbaijani forces launched the attacks against Armenia from Agdam, near the Artsakh border, where the Azerbaijani army stores its mortars and artillery, reported Public Radio of Armenia.

Pegov explained that Azerbaijanis were shooting at Armenian border positions from yards and gardens of civilian, knowing that Armenian forces would be reticent to return fire to prevent civilian casualties.

Russian expert offered payment for pro-Azerbaijani comments

Russian expert, Editor-in-Chief of “Free Mind” («Свободная мысль») journal Mikhail Delyagin has been offered payment for pro-Azerbaijani comments over the recent escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. As Delyagin wrote on his Telegram channel, he had received a call from one of Russian media outlets and was offered money to claim that Armenia had launched an offensive against Azerbaijan, targeting the country’s oil infrastructure.

“The Russian media I had not interacted with for the past year and half reached to me and offered money (amount at my discretion) to give an interview and allege that Armenia had launched an offensive against Azerbaijan to target oil infrastructure. At my polite question why Armenia, and where specifically in the zone of the conflict the Azerbaijani oil infrostruacte are located, the editor of the Moscow news outlet responded “that is the position of Baku.” Delyagin wrote.

“One day, when Baku approach is the Armenian Genocide was carried out by Russians, would Moscow media outlets collect comments for money proving that position? Isn’t it time to clean up the media space?” Delyagin asked rhetorically.

Zatulin: In case of aggression against Armenia, Moscow will fulfill its obligations as CSTO member state

In case of aggression against Armenia, Moscow will fulfill its obligations as a CSTO member state, Russian first deputy chairman of the committee of the State Duma for the CIS Konstantin Zatulin told KP.

When asked whether Russia will use the CSTO tools if the escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border continues, he noted that Moscow "is simply obliged to fulfill its obligations under the treaty in the event of a military attack against Armenia."

"We would really not want Baku or Yerevan to use aggravation for their internal political reasons to strengthen their positions."

"But the question of whether Russia will or will not fulfill its obligations is a subject of speculation both in Azerbaijan and in Armenia. Of course, in case of aggression against Armenia, Moscow will fulfill its obligations as a CSTO member," he added.

Lithuanian MP comments on recent events on Armenia-Azerbaijan border

1022505.jpg 12:29, 21 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 21, ARMENPRESS. Member of the Seimas (parliament) of Lithuania Algimantas Dumbrava, co-chair of the Lithuania-Armenia inter-parliamentary friendship group, commented on the recent aggression unleashed by Azerbaijan on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

“As a member of the inter-parliamentary relations committee with Armenia I follow the events taking places on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims.

In October 2019 I visited Armenia as member of the official delegation of the Seimas. I can say for sure that the Armenian people haven’t forgotten the beautiful gesture of Lithuania when the latter was the first to recognize Armenia’s independence. During the visit we were constantly listening words of gratitude addressed to Lithuania. Recently we have celebrated the 25th anniversary of our cooperation.

I believe that even in this troubling period for the countries of the South Caucasus, Lithuania will not stand aside and will search for ways for peacefully settling the conflict. First of all, the conflicting sides should achieve that around the negotiation table. I understand this is not easy, but it is a precondition for a positive result. The OSCE Minsk Group members - the US, France and Russia, should assist the sides. I would like to remind that both Armenia and Azerbaijan are Eastern Partnership members, which is actively supported by Lithuania. I believe that we all need to unite and help to peacefully solve the years-long conflict between the two countries for the sake of the peaceful and happy future of their children”, the Lithuanian MP said in a Facebook post.
