Four Azerbaijani Troops Die in Clashes With Armenia
July 13, 2020 Updated: July 13, 2020

YEREVAN, Armenia—Armenia and Azerbaijan blamed each other on Monday for skirmishes on their volatile border that has left four Azerbaijani soldiers dead and several troops wounded on both sides.

The two neighbours in the South Caucasus have been locked in conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, a region of Azerbaijan that has been under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by Armenia since a war there ended in 1994. International efforts to settle the conflict have stalled.

Armenian and Azerbaijani forces have frequently engaged in clashes. In 2016, scores were killed in four days of fighting.

The latest incident began Sunday when Armenian and Azerbaijani troops exchanged fire in the northern section of their border. Officials in both countries blamed each other for starting the fighting and said that sporadic shelling continued Monday.

Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry said that four of its soldiers have been killed in Armenian shelling since Sunday and another one later died in a hospital. It said five Azerbaijani servicemen were wounded.

Armenian Defense Ministry spokeswoman Shushan Stepanyan said Monday that two Armenian troops were wounded. Hayk Chobanyan, the governor of Armenia’s Tavush region where the clashes occurred, later said that three other servicemen were wounded.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Azerbaijan of provoking the clashes and warned that it would “bear responsibility for the unpredictable consequences.”

Azerbaijani President Ilhan Aliyev denounced what he described as “another provocation of Armenia” and vowed to protect Azerbaijan’s national territory.

Turkey, which has close ethnic and cultural ties with Azerbaijan, voiced strong support to Baku in the conflict.

“What Armenia did is unacceptable. It must get back to its senses,” Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in an interview with state broadcaster TRT. “Azerbaijan is not alone. The Turkish Republic and the Turkish people, is with Azerbaijan with all of its capabilities.”

In Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry has expressed “serious concern” about the outbreak of fighting and warned against further escalation that could undermine regional security.

Russia has maintained close ties with both Armenia and Azerbaijan and has been part of the so-called Minsk group of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe alongside the United States and France, which has tried to mediate a settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Toivo Klaar, the European Union’s special representative for the South Caucasus, voiced concern about the exchange of fire on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, wrote on Twitter that it’s “important for both countries to show restraint and to use all channels of communication, both direct and the good offices of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs.”

Armenia strongly condemns Turkey's attempts to instigate instability in the region

“Turkey's attempts to intervene in the conflicts in its neighboring regions has already undermined the security and stability thereon,” Armenia’s foreign ministry stated on Monday, reacting to the latest statement issued by Turkey’s foreign ministry on the recent escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border.

The ministry reminded that in its statement the Turkish side not only expressed its unconditional support to Azerbaijan, in fact justifying the use of force by Azerbaijan on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, but also disseminated utterly false and misleading information.

“This provocative attitude by Turkey and its groundless accusations against Armenia attest to the fact that this country has not been acting as a member of the OSCE Minsk Group, but as a party, involved in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. This fact makes even more impossible for Turkey to play any role in the issues related to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, within international, and particularly the OSCE framework,” the statement said, adding: “We strongly condemn Turkey's attempts to instigate instability in our region, and affirm that Armenia will continue to consistently work towards maintaining and strengthening the international and regional security, while closely cooperating with international partners to this end.”

Armenia downs several UAVs amid Azerbaijani attack, images show remnants of Israeli-made drone

1021550.jpg 18:39, 13 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 13, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian Armed Forces have shot down not one but several Azerbaijani unmanned aerial vehicles amid the cross-border fighting when Azerbaijani troops launched an attack on an Armenian military position in the direction of Tavush province.

“As of this moment we have downed not one but several UAVs, one of them a kamikaze drone. All adversary actions have basically been suppressed in their logic,” lawmaker Andranik Kocharyan, the Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security Affairs, said at a session.

Images of one of the downed drones shows the remnants of what appears to be either a Thunder-B recon drone, or a Skystriker combat drone (loitering munition) – both of Israeli production.

Azerbaijan had also deployed the Thunder-B drones during the 2016 clashes, known as the April War.

The Skystrikers are comparably new weapons, and Azerbaijan displayed it in its arsenal in 2019 January.

Azerbaijan arrests ex-defense chief for saying 12 of their troops were killed in action

1021556.jpg 19:11, 13 July, 2020

YEREVAN, JULY 13, ARMENPRESS. Azerbaijani authorities have arrested the country’s former Defense Minister Rahim Ghaziyev for what they call “spreading targeted provocative disinformation on social media, making calls to citizens on public disorders and capturing state bodies”.

Ghaziyev, who was in office from 1992 to 1993, has been charged with two Criminal Code articles – “calls against the state” and “provocation”.

Ghaziyev was actually arrested after he claimed in a statement that 12 Azerbaijani troops were killed in action in the latest clashes at the Armenian border.

The military attack launched by Azerbaijan on an Armenian military base, and the shelling of civilian settlement in Tavush province, and the complete failure of this offensive has created a difficult situation for Baku, which is trying to conceal the real numbers of its losses, and the arrest of Ghaziyev pursuing the goal.

Azerbaijani troops launched an attack on an Armenian military base in Tavush province, using artillery, mortar shells and UAVs. The Azerbaijani military also shelled the town of Chinari with 120mm mortars, damaging civilian homes.

Armenian-made combat UAVs used in action for first time

Armenian combat UAVs were put into action for the first time, as Armenia undertook punitive actions against Azerbaijan last night.

“July 13 will remain in history as the day, when the combat UAVs of Armenian productionwere put into action. For the first time, Armenian combat UAVs were used, in combat conditions, and showed brilliant results,” former Spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense Artsrun Hovhannisyan said in a Facebook post.

“It seems high-ranking officers became victims of their strike,” he added.

Earlier today Azerbaijan confirmed the death of Major General Popad Hashimov and Colonel Ilgar Mirzoev.

Сегодня СМИ пишут, что армянские вооруженные силы сбили супер современный и очень дорогостоящий (до 30 миллионов долларов) беспилотник Elbit Hermes 900 израильс… See More
Today the media says that the Armenian armed forces hit super modern and very expensive (up to 30 million dollars) drone Elbit Hermes 900 Israeli production. The unit is very serious, consisting of weapons in dozens of countries of the world and able to be in the air for more than 30 hours. Contrary to what some of my Armenian friends write, this is not a drone strike - there is no weapons on it. His task is another, he is engaged in intelligence, radio interception, interference for aviation and ground forces of the opponent. They have been produced since 2009 and have proven themselves in the best way. There are about 10 pieces of such machines in Azerbaijan, according to other data 15. Now it has become one less.
In fact, this is the first case when the machine of this level has been hit. Still, no one has ever managed to "get it", despite the fact that such aggregates are constantly used in the fighting in Syria, Iraq, Lebanon, Sudan, Afghanistan. These cars are still controlling the US and Mexico border, monitoring drug cartels, they have long been working in Colombia and Brazil to fight rebels and drug dealers.
So the Armenian military bravo! Guys, good for you guys.
I asked a question about this incident to my friend who worked as an instructor engineer for many years at the Israeli company Elbit Systems, developing and producing this and other drones. In his opinion, only full razgilds and unprofessionals could put this "flying brain" of any army. Logical! It's not a sleeping soldier to chop with an axe in Budapest and not a harmless blogger to choke four in Baku.

ICRC says ready to mediate between Armenia and Azerbaijan
July 14, 2020 - 17:06 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is concerned about the humanitarian impact of reported military activity along the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which has intensified since July 12, ICRC said in a statement.

The activity poses additional risks for the civilian population living in the area and affects their access to livelihoods, the Committee said.

The ICRC said it is sharing its concerns bilaterally with the parties to the conflict, reminding them that they must at all times distinguish between civilians and persons directly participating in hostilities.

"We call on the sides to respect the basic rules of international humanitarian law and, while conducting military operations, take all precautions necessary to ensure that civilian life and infrastructure, such as homes, schools and medical facilities, is respected and protected", said Martin Schuepp, director of the operations for the region.

"We are ready to act as a neutral intermediary between the parties and assist those affected by the recent escalation of fighting."

July 12 - Shelling Along Armenian-Azerbaijani Border
The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, along the Tavush-Tovuz section, has been tense since the afternoon of July 12 and that firing from both sides has occurred.

On that day, in a Facebook post, Armenian Ministry of Defense Press Secretary Shushan Stepanyan wrote that at 12:30 local time Azerbaijani soldiers tried to cross the border into Armenia in a UAZ (УАЗ) utility vehicle.

Stepanyan noted that after a warning issued by the Armenian side, the Azerbaijani servicemen left the UAZ car and returned to their positions.

At 13:45, the Azerbaijani servicemen repeated their attempt to occupy the border post of the Armenian Armed Forces, using artillery fire, but were pressured by the Armenian side and, suffering losses, were repulsed. Stepanyan added that there are no losses on the Armenian side.

Following an Armenian Ministry of Defense press conference, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense issued an official statement stating that two Azerbaijani servicemen were killed and five others were wounded in an incident on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border on July 12.

In the same statement, Azerbaijan insisted that "the Armenian side has losses," but Stepanyan had earlier denied the Azerbaijani side's allegations.

In the evening of the same day, Stepanyan wrote that after the announcement spread in the afternoon, her Facebook page was inundated with incendiary comments from Azerbaijanis.

Stepanyan wrote: "Judging by the mass influx of Azerbaijanis to my page and the nervous comments, one thing can be concluded, that, in fact, our servicemen have skillfully hurt the Azeri servicemen, who first tried to cross the border for an unknown reason during the day, to which our servicemen, as a sign goodwill, offered a chance to escape.”

A few minutes later, the website Banak.info published a photo of the damaged UAZ car. The car was in the neutral zone. Late in the evening, Stepanyan stated that the Azerbaijani side had resumed shelling in the same Armenian position using an 82 mm mortar shells and tanks. She added that the military-political leadership of Azerbaijan will bear full responsibility for the escalation of the situation.

At the same time, Artsakh Presidential Spokesman Vahram Poghosyan wrote on his Facebook page that there is relative calm along the entire Artsakh-Azerbaijani border.

He noted. "As the enemy is shelling one of the positions of the Armenian state border in the direction of Tavush, I suppose that the majority of the society, especially the parents of many servicemen, are also interested in the situation on the Artsakh-Azerbaijani border. At the moment, there is relative calm along the entire border, and the Artsakh Defense Army continues to confidently fulfill its task.”

Former Armenian Defense Ministry Spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan reported that in addition to human losses, the Azerbaijani side also suffered equipment losses, adding that the Armenian side hit an Azeri drone.

Around midnight, Azerbaijan officially confirmed that a third soldier had died.

At the same time, Azerbaijani hackers launched DDOS (Distributed denial of service attack) hits against sites with .am domains. Hetq's website was also attacked, but it was completely restored.

Azerbaijani forces suffered ‘serious losses’ in battle with Armenian military: Russian media
2020-07-13
armenia-azerbaijan-conflict-645x516.jpg

BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:30 P.M.) – The Armenian military beat back an assault that was launched by the Azerbaijani forces along the border on Sunday.

According to the Russian-language Avia.Pro publication, the Armenian military inflicted heavy losses in the ranks of the Azerbaijani army, while the former suffered little-to-no casualties.

“A day earlier, a military conflict occurred on the border of Armenia and Azerbaijan, resulting in very serious losses for the Azerbaijani side. It is known about the destruction of a bus with the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, a downed drone and damaged armored vehicles, which illegally entered the territory of Armenia, while there are no losses from the Armenian military,” Avia.Pro said.

The Russian publication said the Azerbaijani army tried to move their forces into Armenian territory, but were once again forced to abandon the attempt.

“Despite the fact that the unleashing of a full-fledged military conflict between the two sides was avoided, this morning the Azerbaijani military made several new attempts to illegally transfer its militarized units to the territory of a neighboring state, however, the Armenian Armed Forces gave another adequate response, which does not exclude the growth of tension in the region,” Avia.Pro reported.

The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense has not commented on these claims; however, they did state on Sunday that there were clashes with the Armenian military, which resulted in casualties on both sides.
