The attacker who took two hostages at the Ministry of Defense of Estonia before taking his own life was a member of party defending the interests of part of the Russian minority in the country, according to Estonia's Prosecutor's Office.

Armenian attacks Estonian Defense Ministry

Estonia has identified the man who attacked the Defense Ministry. He

is an ethnic Armenian, Karen Drambyan. The 57-year old received

citizenship in the 1990s. He was a lawyer and member of the United

Left Party in 2009.

 

 

Drambyan broke into the ministry and took hostages. He was either

killed by the special forces or killed himself. No one else was

injured.

 

 

Estonian Prime Minister Andrus Ansip and Defense Minister said that

Drambyan was possibly inspired by Anders Breivik from Norway. Both

terrorists had hundreds of bullets, explosives and a gas mask. The

minister said that the incident demonstrates the efficient operation

of the ministry.

Ուշադրություն, ուշադրություն… մենք` հայերս, քրիստոնեությունը առաջինը պաշտոնապես ընդունած ազգն ենք…

Երբևիցե մտածել եք այն մասին թե ինչու եք գնում Գեղարդի վանքային համալիրը, Թալինի եկեղեցին, Սանահին, Տաթև, Հառիճավանք. որպեսզի ծանոթանաք հայոց մշակույթին կամ հաղորդակից լինեք Աստծուն թե… այս սկսենք հենց այդ թե –ից…

 

Հայաստանում մատների վրա կարելի է հաշվել այն եկեղեցիները, որոնց պատերին խզբզած չլինեն… առավել հաճախ հանդիպող խզբզանքների թվում հանդիպում ենք սիրո անհասկանալի դրսևորումներ` օրինակ վերցնենք հայկական այբուբենի ցանկացած տառ և գումարենք իրար` Ա+ Բ= սեր … (ի դեպ, 21-րդ դարի մարդու համար վաղուց արդեն ժանգոտած արտահայտություն) , Անուշ + Պողոս = Սեր (անշուշտ սերը մեծատառով) Աննա + Արմեն =սեր և այդպես շարունակ… նորից շեշտենք, որ խոսքը եկեղեցու պատերի մասին է…

Տեսնես այդ «քրիստոնյա » հայերը ինչ են մտածում, երբ պղծում են եկեղեցին…ցավալի է, բայց այսօր հայ երիտասարդներից շատերը չեն գիտակցում, որ փչացնելով մշակութային ժառանգությունը` աղավաղում են սեփական դեմքը…նրանցից շատերը եկեղեցի այցելելու պարտադիր նախապայման են համարում դրա պատերին գրել-ջնջելը, խզբզելը, բնականաբար, չմոռանալով քրիստոնեությունը առաջինը ճանաչած ժողովուրդ լինելու հանգամանքը…

Բայց այսօր այդ նույն ժողովուրդը չի հասկանում, որ եկեղեցու պատերին հայկական այբուբենի տարբեր տառերի օգնությամբ սիրո խոստովանություն գրելը` վանդալիզմ է…

Ծիծաղելի է, իսկ ավելի ճիշտ ողբալի է, երբ որևէ օտարերկրացու մեծ հպարտությամբ ներկայացնում ես 7-րդ դարի եկեղեցի`ճոխ և վերամբարձ բառեով և հանկարծ ստպված ես լինում կուլ տալ սեփական բառերտ, երբ այդ նույն օտարերկրացին հարցնում է, թե այդ ինչ «գրություններ » են պատերի վրա. դե արի ու նույն վեհաշուք բառերով պատասխանի, որ մի խումբ թերզարգացածներ դրսևորել են իրենց եղած կամ էլ չեղած սերը…

 

Իսկ ովքեր են մեղավորները…միթե միայն այդ գրությունների հեղինակները, թե…իսկ եկեղեցին…որքանով է նա <<նպաստել» այս իրավիճակին…

Եկեղեցին կորցնում է իր արժեքները… դարեր շարունակ ժողովրդին համախմբած եկեղեցին, որը պիտի դառնար մեր ներկայի ու ապագայի պաշտպանն ու հովանավորը, քանդում է (թվում է, թե այդ բառը պիտի կապ չունենար եկեղեցու հետ) լեզվի ինստիտուտը, այգին, վերջիվերջո, սբ. Կաթողիկեն, որպեսզի «ընդլայնվի» ` նոր եկեղեցու և եռահարկ կաթողիկոսական նստավայրի տեսքով, այն դեպքում, երբ չի կարողանում եղածը պահպանել…

Մեր եկեղեցին, հոգևորականությունը …չէ, չէ, ամեն դեպքում սա արդեն հատված է մեկ այլ ողբերգությունից…

Locally picked blackberries may be hazardous to your health

 

This is not the first time that Hetq has written about toxic wastes from the Metal Prince mining company flowing into the Akhtala River which then feeds into the Debed River in northern Armenia.

 

Metal Prince Ltd. is owned by American-Armenian businessman Serob Der-Bedrossian who is now embroiled in a court case on charges of pedophilia.

 

In the past we weren’t able to photograph how the company was dumping its wastes into the river under the cover of darkness. It was just too dangerous an area to traverse given the pools of toxic waste water underfoot.

On August 14, after having received a call that the company was dumping wastes into the river, we rushed to the scene and photographed the process. It was 8pm when we arrived.

 

This dangerously polluted water is used further downstream to irrigate crops in the villages of Akhtala, Karkop, Shnogh, Tchotchkan and Noyemberyan.

For years, Armenia’s Ministry of Nature Protection and Lori Marz law enforcement agencies have turned a blind eye to what is taking place.

At the site, we came upon Akhtala resident Gyulnara. The woman was out picking blackberries that she would sell at the Alaverdi town market the next day to customers with no clue as to their source.

 

The moral of the story is “caveat emptor”, especially when buying locally grown or wild produce in the Akhtala region.

Former Armenian Soldier, 65, Indicted on Four Counts of Murder

A grand jury indictment was unsealed Monday against a former Armenian army soldier accused of killing four people.

 

Those killed included the family of a woman he allegedly was obsessed with and a prostitute on Sunset Boulevard.

 

Alberd Tersargyan, 65, was arrested last year shortly after the body of Karine Hakobyan was discovered by her teenage daughter slumped in the front seat of her car in Little Armenia. She had been shot at close range.

 

Fifteen months earlier, the same daughter had come home to the family's apartment to find the bodies of her father, Khachik Safaryan, and her younger sister.

 

The four-count murder indictment returned Aug. 26 claims the daughter witnessed her father's killing. The special circumstance makes Tersargsyan eligible for the death penalty.

 

The indictment supersedes existing charges and avoids the need for a preliminary hearing.

 

Tersargyan once served in the Armenian army and fancied himself "a professional killer," detectives said. He became a suspect in the slayings after police received a tip from his employer.

 

Police and prosecutors claim Tersargyan killed Hakobyan's husband and child after becoming obsessed with her.

 

Tersargyan and his wife became close friends of Hakobyan's family almost immediately after they arrived in the country in 2003 and moved to Little Armenia on the eastern edges of Hollywood, police say.

 

Safaryan had confided in Tersargyan that he was having an affair with an old girlfriend he had known in Armenia, said LAPD Det. Mike Whale.

 

By then, Tersargyan had fallen in love with Hakobyan and tried to drive the couple apart by helping Safaryan arrange his trysts while also telling Hakobyan details about the affair, detectives said.

 

Hakobyan remained in the marriage, which appears to have angered Tersargyan and led him to more drastic measures, detectives said.

 

Safaryan received an anonymous threat that he should leave the country quickly, which detectives said they now believe was an attempt by Tersargyan to scare the man off.

 

Within days of the threat, Safaryan and his daughter were dead.

 

During the investigation into those killings, Tersargyan fed detectives details about the affair, which helped to turn suspicion on the mistress and her husband.

 

In the months after the slayings, Tersargyan continued to pursue Hakobyan without success. Police believe the constant rebuffs ultimately drove him to kill her, as well.

 

Suspicion first fell on Tersargyan when his boss at a cabinet-making company called an Armenian American police officer he knew in the Glendale Police Department with concerns about one of his workers.

 

He told the officer that he had seen Tersargyan with a handgun and had talked of his close relationship with the Safaryan family.

 

After his arrest, ballistics tests on a gun he owned showed it had been used to fire the bullets that killed Hakobyan, Whalen said.

 

While searching Tersargyan's residence police found a beat-up gray van that they connected to the killing of prostitute Julie Kates.

 

Kates had been standing alone at a bus stop in daylight on the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Kingsley Drive when she suddenly fell to the ground.

 

When she was taken to a hospital, doctors discovered she had been shot in the temple with a small-caliber weapon.

 

An acquaintance of Kates told detective that a man driving an old gray van had angrily accused Kates of stealing a DVD player the day before she was killed and threatened to harm her if she did not return it.

On Friday night, Hakoybyan's 14-year-old daughter came home to an empty apartment. She got worried when her mother didn’t come home from work, so the girl walked down to the carport looking for her.

 

There, she found her mother's body slumped in her Honda CRV with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

 

Eighteen months earlier, the same daughter arrived home from school and discovered her father and 8-year-old sister shot to death inside the family’s Hollywood apartment.

 

On Monday, a team of Los Angeles police detectives were trying to piece together the three killings, which occurred a few blocks from each other in Hollywood’s Little Armenia district.

 

Detectives believe the killings are connected but declined to provide more details.

Let us remember that the construction was on hold for awhile due to the efforts of the environmentalists. In order to find out the actual situation we visited Gilan reserve with the chair of the organization Inga Zarafyan.

 

What a paradise…

 

Perhaps Khosrov II Kotak King would never imagine that 17 centuries later in the forest established by him the current “elite” of Armenia would initiate a construction of a restaurant complex. The forest established by Khosrov II in 330-338 AD gained a status of a state reserve only in 1958. The reserve was created to improve and enrich the fauna and flora of the forest. It occupies approximately 27.000 hectares of land and is stretched along the south-western side of Geghama mountain chain. The Armenian moufflon (wild sheep) is the most commonly seen animal there and the goat of bezoar. Among the birds we mostly see the black falcon, the sheep hawk and the eagle. The poisonous rattle snake is commonly found as well. In this forest we also see historic monuments – Geghard, Havuts Tar, Kakavaberd and the medieval bridge. Indeed our oligarchs couldn’t possibly miss this reserve from their attention. And if according to Khorenatsi Khosrov II planted trees in the reserve then the representatives of the nowadays oligopolies take on the right to annihilate the trees and the forest in order to build a complex for parties and feasts. And this dire story started on May 24, 2007. At that time the RA government has made the decision to establish Gilan state reserve in Khosrov forest, which was ratified by the former president of Armenia Robert Kocharyan. Moreover, in the decision we may read “in order to strengthen the importance and protection of Khosrov state forest it is found expedient to establish Gilan state reserve with Bayburd region, which is given out for 60-year lease and occupies 118 hectares of land.” And the license of lease and construction of Gilan was given to Hovazadzor LTD, which was registered in September 2007. By the way, the founders of the company are Kamo Khachatryan and Mikhail Bezrukov. It’s worth mentioning one more factor. “Certain parts of the lands of Gilan may be given out for rent for agricultural purposes for a 10-year period and for 5 year period for grass reaping purposes. Nonetheless, before the applications of the potential renters the fundament of the restaurant was constructed.” “I am building a paradise, paradise…” this is how responded the workers working on the site.

 

Road to the heart of Gilan

 

On the road to Khosrov road we could notice the piles of garbage. Along that, the Brook of Arax River floats, which from time to time takes a piece of garbage from the bank of the river. And a sort of an internal struggle strikes between the water and the garbage. After passing the sign of Khosrov forest another struggle begins between the destroyed road and the passers. Over 8 kilometers from the entrance is located Gilan reserve, after passing which the passersby cannot miss the private house built there. Besides these houses a whole village is located – Gilanlar. The village has approximately 30 families but doesn’t have a kindergarten, school, clinic, store or even a head of village. “We are not here illegally. We are in our property. They don’t give us certificates because they say that this is a state reserve and that we have no right to be here. This is what we are struggling for,” said Bagrat Abrahamyan, who was sitting next to Gilan reserve and was quite surprised to know how come the government legalizes the construction of a restaurant and meanwhile plays with the destiny of a whole village.

 

Incomplete paradise

 

The style of the Armenian oligarchs was noticed even here. The type of the tiles and the unclear design of the restaurant left the impression that soon they are going to listen to “rabis” music. The fundament of the restaurant is built, however judging from the grass grown on the sand we may assume the construction has been on hold for awhile. “No, nothing is taking place here,” said a young man that was guarding the building by avoiding answering our questions. “Well I have been here a month and don’t even know what they are building,” he said. “One beautiful day the minister of nature protection and journalists visited with us and told us to cease the construction in Gilan reserve. And as you see we are following this order and no construction is being done at the moment,” mentioned the head of Garni division of Khosrov forest Sargis Hovhannisyan. To the question as to what the destiny of this building is going to be Hovhannisyan responded, “I don’t know. I really don’t know.” As of the protection 0f the area by the leasers Hovhannisyan mentioned, “I think this matter will be solved this way. If they have the right to come and go they should because they may apply to certain bodies and people and try to defend their rights.” The duties of the workers of the reserve are currently confined by the protection of flora and fauna of the reserve. So their job is to prohibit tree cutting and prevent poaching. According to Hovhannisyan during the 12 years of his tenure there has been no case of poaching or tree cutting. But is it legal to build such a building in a state reserve? Hovhannisyan responded, “Who said it’s illegal? The whole republic knows it’s legal. How can it be illegal of there is the decision of the government and people are employed here? How can it be illegal? So if it’s illegal you try to build it too.” To our next question as if it’s legal why would they freeze the activities of construction Hovhannisyan said, “I cannot answer that question. The construction was going on; then they froze it and I haven’t personally read the documents. So I don’t know.” Although the construction of the restaurant has been ceased temporarily nevertheless the environmentalists continue being concerned about the future destiny of the reserve taking into account decision number 3 of the government. “This is a danger which needs to be prevented despite anything else,” say the environmentalists.

Noyemberyan Rape Case: Police Question Mayor's Son

More details have been trickling in regarding the rape case of a 17 year-old girl in Noyemberyan.

 

On September 2, she gave a statement to local police claiming that 3 students of the Noyemberyan High School #2 took her by car to site to the outskirts of town and raped her the previous day.

 

Photo-journalist Gagik Shamshyan states that he was told that one of the boys involved is the son of Noyemberyan Mayor Vanoush Amiraghyan and that another is the son of top ranking Noyemberyan police official.

 

Shamshyan has told Hetq that the mother of the girl has statement that she filed a missing person’s report with the Noyemberyan police on September 1after the girl failed to return from school.

 

The girl was subsequently located by law enforcement and taken home.

 

Police have launched a criminal case.

 

The three boys are being questioned and the girl is undergoing forensic tests.

Corruption and lawlessness in top echelons of power are the key reason

of army negative image in Armenia, Alek Yenigomshyan, a member of

Sardarapat Movement Initiative Group, veteran of the Armenian Secret

Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA), told media, Thursday.

 

Bribe taking leads to non-interference into incidents in the army

hereby promoting such non-combat relations, he said. System changes

are not enough, he thinks, it is necessary to raise the authority of

the healthy officer forces and help them resolve the army problems.

 

Yenigomshyan is sure that problems in the Armenian public are only

one of the reasons of the recent incidents in army. But it is wrong

explaining the outrage in Armenia with the popular phrase "army is

the mirror of the public."

 

Recently non-combat deaths in unclear circumstances in army have grown

in number. Thus, on August 26 soldier of NKR Defense Army Aghasi

Abrahamyan died in hospital. He was severely beaten up in his army

unit and taken to the med bunker where he was left on the ground for

10 hours and again beaten up by the head of the med bunker.

 

Yesterday another soldier of Askeran regiment of the NKR Defense

Army Hayk Mkrtchyan was killed while on duty by his comrade Lendrush

Nazlukhanyan as a result of mishandling a gun.

tells that the comrade of Hovhaness Vardanyan informed the family

of the soldier that their son was taken to psychiatric hospital 9

days ago. The territorial military commission called the incident

a misunderstanding. Vardanyan's father phoned the commander of his

son to get more information on the incident. The commander explained

nothing. The Defense Ministry has not responded to the statements

of the soldier's relatives since August 3. "I sent a healthy boy to

army, and has got him back from Karabakh in such state," the father

cried out.

 

The soldier in the video just repeats separate phrases going to and

fro, rolling on the ground and saying that he served well in Karabakh

but he was beaten up and raped. The uncle of the soldier Aram Virabyan

expressed indignation at the negligence of the higher instances to

the incident. "This negligence makes us leave for Karabakh and settle

accounts with the offenders. We are ready to rally in the square with

posters," he said.

"Swindled" American-Armenian Businessman Urges President Sargsyan to Take Action

Edmond Khudyan, a businessman from the United States, who says he’s been swindled and cheated out of millions of dollars while engaging in commercial enterprises in Armenia, has written an open letter to President Serzh Sargsyan, calling on him to finally ‘take the bull by the horns’ and get to the bottom of his ongoing financial nightmare.

 

In his letter, Mr. Khudyan calls on President Sargsyan to take long overdue measures to see that those complicit in the financial fraud and cover-up are exposed and punished.

 

The businessman says he hopes President Sargsyan will get the process rolling before the Armenian head of state visits the United States to participate in commemorations marking the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.

 

Mr. Khudyan reminds President Sargsyan that as recently as September 14, at an independence event at Sardarabat, he spoke of the importance of the diaspora in the nation building process and the necessity for the rule of law.

 

The businessman, who was born in Tehran and raised in Yerevan, laments the fact that his letters to the Ministry of the Diaspora, the RA Police or Ministry of Justice have either gone unanswered or given short shrift in terms of results.

 

Mr. Khudyan also reminds President Sargsyan that none of his letters addressed to the RA Presidential Palace have ever been answered, which leads one to conclude that presidential staffers have kept the president in the dark.

 

“In the Armenian language press in the U.S., the matter of my investments in Armenia has been widely covered and remains in the spotlight and a topic of conversation of many civic organizations,” Mr. Khudyan writes.

NGOs and activists from social internet networks decided to join and

to declare a new S.O.S. Sevan campaign. On 20 September the first and

foremost measures to be taken to save Lake Sevan were discussed at the

Aarhus Center in Yerevan. The situation of the lake was determined as

highly critical. "I can declare we don't have "lake Sevan" freshwater

reservoir any longer. If somebody wants to drink this water, let them

try and we'll see what will happen to them," said Gagik Sukhudyan, who

held the position of "Sevan" National Park Director from 1981 to 1992.

 

Under him, even in the late 70's, when logging process in Sevan

acquired threatening nature, such pollution was not observed.

 

The main threats for the lake are as follows: - change in water

composition, - fish extinction, - lake pollution with garbage, sewage

and industrial wastes, - illegal operation of mining companies -

GeoProMining Gold, Gegamet Plus, Mika Cement which violates Article

10 of RA Law "On Lake Sevan".

 

- absence of control , - imitation activities of official bodies

and improper waste of funds - budget, grant and loan (particularly,

the loan allotted by the World Bank in the amount of 16 million USD

for "Reducing Poverty and Preserving Lake Sevan Ecosystem" program)

designed to preserved Lake Sevan Ecosystem.

 

The main reason for concern is that neither Nature Protection Ministry

as represented by "Sevan" National Park, nor Urban Development,

Territorial Administration, Energy and Natural Resources and

Agriculture Ministries, nor any committees and councils put any

efforts to save the lake.

 

The laws are violated and nobody bears responsibility for that. There

is certain impression that top officials consider Sevan as a source

for getting profit.

 

The discussion participants worked out an action plan and decided to

call on everybody who is not indifferent to the fate of Sevan.

 

There is no Armenia without Sevan. Let's join and not allow a group

of people to grab and to leave to our next generation a toxic apple

instead of 34 billion freshwater.

FORMER OAKLAND CHURCH TREASURER ORDERED TO REPAY ALMOST $400,000

OAKLAND -- A former treasurer of an Oakland church who stole more than

$400,000 from parish coffers was sentenced to a year of electronic

monitoring Friday and ordered to repay most of the money taken from

the St. Vartan Armenian Apostolic Church.

 

In a plea deal with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office,

which appeared to frustrate several church members, Gary Alexanian,

47, was found guilty of grand theft instead of the more serious

embezzlement crime he was originally charged with.

 

In addition, Alexanian agreed to repay the money he stole, submit to

a year of electronic monitoring and serve five years probation.

 

Parish members declined to comment after the sentencing Friday but

in a letter to the probation department, the parish council said

Alexanian deserved prison time for stealing.

 

"A crime of this size cannot be rewarded with simply a probationary

scolding," the letter stated. "The criminal activity perpetrated by

Mr. Alexanian has shaken the Church to its core, profoundly impacting

the parish community."

 

Alexanian, who was baptized at the church, had stolen the money during

his more than decade long tenure as the parish's treasurer. The money

was gathered, church members have said, through bake sales and other

yearly fundraising events.

 

In the letter to the probation department, the parish council said

they erred in putting full trust in Alexanian who they said began

stealing within the first 45 days he was appointed treasurer.

 

Michael Cardoza, Alexanian's defense attorney, said his client is sorry

for his actions and began to steal because of financial pressures in

his life.

 

In a letter to the court, Alexanian said he was ashamed and said

his actions have led to a crumbling of his life, which includes a

pending divorce demanded by his wife and ostracization from the Bay

Area Armenian community.

 

"Because of my actions, my wife has moved for a legal separation,

we are losing the house and I have personally lost some of my family

members, and all of my friends," Alexanian wrote. "I acknowledge

that it was selfish, stupid, and before long, things just got out

of control."

 

Cardoza said his client hopes the church members will eventually be

able to forgive him.

 

"What was most shocking to me is the first issue was repayment

of money. Not one member of the church ever asked him how he was

doing," Cardoza said. "We hope that the church, in their hearts,

can forgive him."

Yerkir: Transport route owners terrorizing taxi drivers in Abovyan city

The paper claims that the owners of transport routes in Abovyan city

are terrorizing taxi drivers.

 

Initially, it says, there were minibuses operating within Abovyan with

the fare costing 50 drams. About a year later they were replaced by

Bogdan busses and the price went up to 100 drams.

 

The paper explains that after the imports of those Bogdan buses the

Yerevan-Abovyan minibuses were banned from entering the city of

Abovyan and collect passengers.

 

The passengers are now reaching the bus terminal through the Bogdan

buses which means they take two fares by the time they reach Yerevan -

one to reach the bus terminal from their homes and the other to reach

Yerevan.

 

Further, the paper says that residents had reconciled themselves with

these conditions. In many cases some three-four passengers would join

and take a taxi to get to the bus terminal, paying each 100 drams.

 

But now, the paper claims, those taxies have been drawn out of the

territory of the bus terminal so that passengers would take only taxis

of the De Luxe Company that belongs to Abovyan Mayor Karapet Guloyan.

 

The paper also claims that it learned that on Friday the taxi drivers

were instructed not to take more than one passenger, or at least check

if they belong to the same family - an attempt apparently to ensure

the owners of transport routs within the city have enough passengers.

Clips of happy smiling youth from the original are intercut with scenes of hazing in the army, demonstrations, police brutality and persecution of journalists, opposition leaders and human rights activists. The song from the original has remained unchanged.

The culture of bribery has been etched in our very bones and marrows.

 

When will this stop? Can we stop the art of "passing the buck"?

Please stop blaming the Soviet era. Bribery is an accepted practice in the Middle East.

Why is it that we learned the art of bribery from the Soviets and not the art of conquest and empire building?

Look at the map of Russia, the largest country of the world, 6,592,800 sq mi. As large as China-3, 606, 100 and the US - 3,618.770 put together.

Not only that, it has pervaded into our most sacred and noble institutions like the military and medicine.

Below we don’t see the motive of this crime. Given that the perpetrator is a military psychiatrist, was it to have him one’s son classify as psychologically unfit for military service?

 

Besides, where does one get $2000? At the current rate of $1=400 Drams, it will amount to 800,000 in the least. Can Armenians count so many Drams, i.e passed the number “qarsoun”?

Armenian military doctor detained for receiving bribe

YEREVAN. – Armenian MOD’s Yerevan Garrison Military Hospital’s Head of Psychiatric Department, Medical Service Major Vaghinak Hovhannisyan, on Monday was taken into custody on charges of bribery.

As a result of joint operations by the law enforcement agencies of Armenia’s Military Prosecutor’s Office, Police Force, and MOD, Hovhannisyan was arrested on suspicion of accepting $2,000 US as bribe from a citizen, MOD Investigation Service informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

An investigation is underway.

Is it possible to find just one government official that can explain

why the Hrazdan Sports Complex must be the property of MP Ashot

Aghababyan, a member of the ruling Republican Party?

 

Can any of our government officials explain why this individual must

be lord and master of the structures and buildings planned for this

14 hectare parcel of land?

 

If this is a matter of national security, let one of them provide an

explanation, so that the rest of us understand.

 

If it is a measure taken to strengthen the foundation of the state,

let them say as much.

 

Perhaps Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan can explain what pivotal

significance it will serve the shaping of the Armenian nation to have

one of his party colleagues build a huge commercial center on the site.

 

The authorities have familiarized themselves with all possible ways

to squeeze the state and now they are writing an encyclopaedia on

the subject.

 

The bowels of the country will soon be opened for exploitation;

all the exploratory licenses have been doled out.

 

It's as if the end of the world has been declared and our officials

have decided to make the country's riches their own. But the country's

natural wealth doesn't belong to this generation alone. Doesn't anyone

in the corridors of power bring this inconvenient truth to the table?

 

Aram Haroutyunyan, the Minister of Nature Protection, couldn't care

less about the fate of the Trchkan Waterfall. His business interests

continue to flourish. The construction and planning interests he owns

are winning the tender bids launched by the very ministry he runs.

 

This minister, who has become a natural disaster for Armenia's

environment, rubber stamps any document placed on his desk. That's

how the green light for the construction of a hydro-electric plant

at Trchkan was given. If he doesn't sign off on the permit papers

some other state agency will.

 

The forests of Armenia are being massacred under the government's

nose. Furthermore, it is the state agency HayAntar (Armenian Forest)

that is wielding the axe.

 

If there are still non-believers in the government, we can escort

them to the forests of Tavoush and Lori at any time so that they can

see for themselves the results of the organized rape of the land.

 

Political duplicity, the doling out of plum government posts, searching

out new avenues to embezzle state funds - this is what really interests

our "elected officials".

 

The rest of us are just cogs in a bigger wheel.

 

True to form, we and the nation as a whole are dutifully going along

for the ride.

Literally our garbage side

 

 

WHY ARE YEREVAN RESIDENTS STEALING GARBAGE BINS WHILE THROWING THEIR GARBAGE ONTO THE SIDEWALK?

Months ago, new large-capacity garbage bins were installed on Yerevan's

streets; however, as confirmed by officials, the intention to keep

garbage off the streets, at least on the city's main streets, didn't

become a reality.

 

According to Hovhannes Stepanyan, deputy director of waste management

company EKOAR, responsible for garbage pick-up in Yerevan's Arabkir

administrative district, all the applied measures are fruitless.

 

"Our company carries out continuous garbage pick-up and sanitary

cleaning work in this administrative district. Garbage bins are

emptied twice daily, but a few hours later the picture is the same.

 

You can't have such a careless and negligent attitude toward property.

 

These bins are for easing the concerns of our fellow citizens,

right?" said Stepanyan.

 

Also added to the garbage bins, assert authoritative agencies, are

broken bins.

 

"Yerevan City Hall provided all of the capital's administrative

districts, including ours, with 200L-capacity garbage bins, which

we installed in busy areas. The goal was to ease the waste disposal

process of residents and businesses. Considering the fact that

many of our fellow citizens are too lazy to throw out the trash

in the appropriate location and in several cases, outright throw

bags, sometimes filled with construction waste, onto the sidewalk,

we thought we might be able to avoid such situations; however,

regretfully, the picture is the same - and now with the addition that

they unsparingly have begun to break and even steal the garbage bins,"

head of the utility division at Arabkir municipality Arsen Movsisyan

told Epress.am.

 

Arabkir residents also complained to Epress.am about the garbage

strewn on the sidewalks.

 

"Of course, it's very commendable that they've installed garbage

bins, which are quite large capacity, and it's painful to see how

unsparingly they break and remove them. In the evening, you can

come across disgraceful scenes, when residents are even so lazy as

to throw their bags full of garbage in [or next to] the bins. Many

simply open their windows or come out onto their balconies and throw

their garbage onto the street, which results in our street appearing

like a real garbage dump in the morning," Vagharzhyan St. resident

Hermine Hakobyan told Epress.am.

 

Several Arabkir residents even refused to talk about this issue,

while those who did talk only pointed to the horrible condition

without proposing actual solutions to the problem.

Oligarchs in Armenia have a weakness for gaudy palatial estates, replete with gold encrusted domes, statuettes the size of people and marble walls. Some Arab sheiks have similar tastes when it comes to their homes.

Such homes are being erected in the outlying districts of Yerevan – out of public sight. Most have high walls to keep the curious away.

Architect Sashour Kalashyan said that these designs are a reflection of the inner, psychological, essence of the oligarchs.

“Such palaces are surrounded by high walls so that passerby cannot see what is going on inside. It is not by accident that such homes are built away from streets and inaccessible. The owners are fearful that others might get jealous and do harm. The jealousy springs from the fact that most of the money enjoyed by the oligarchs is ill-gotten,” Kalashyan told Hetq.

The architect knows some individuals who have even built churches in their estates where they pray to God every night.

“There’s the Christian belief that one can be absolved of sin through prayer. So these oligarchs pray for absolution one day and go about their criminal business the next,” noted Kalashyan.

The most ornate private homes of the oligarchs belong to Prosperous Armenia Party president and MP, Gagik Tsarukyan.

At least his estates can be seen. On the road leading to Abovyan, high on a hill overlooking the town, two of Tsaroukyan’s homes magically rise up. Architecturally, they look the same.

No one doubts the financial resources that Tsarukyan commands, especially since he seems to enjoy flaunting his wealth.

In a recent conversation with Hetq, Tsarukyan’s press secretary Khachik Galstyan, said that the businessman/politician derives his wealth from the 35 companies making up his MultiGroup holding company.

Some of MultiGroup’s diverse holdings are – the Abovyan Measuring Equipment Company, the Yerevan Chemical Drug Firm, the MultiGaz chain of filling stations, the Mek furniture store chain, the Ararat Cognac and Wine Company, the Ararat Cement Factory, etc.

In 2009, Gagik Tsarukyan and his wife Javahir purchased the Bulgarian Gorna Banya mineral water company for 25 million Euros.

General Seyran Saroyan, an MP affiliated with the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, can also point with pride to his palatial house in Etchmiadzin. Unlike Gagik Tsarukyan’s Abovyan estate, General Saroyan’s house, surrounded by high walls, is located on a central street in Etchmiadzin.

The house is monitored by a security team day and night and the walls prevent the curious from peering inside.

They say that General Saroyan owns other homes as well besides the one in Etchmiadzin.

Each morning and evening, the gates open and out streams a phalanx of Hummers and other pricey SUV’s.

MP Saroyan spends little time within the halls of parliament, let alone in Armenia.

Our sources tell us that he owns businesses in Odessa, Ukraine.

In Etchmiadzin, Saroyan owns the Sar Kop wine, vodka and cognac factory and other businesses.

Saroyan’s assistant, Boris Mkrtchyan told Hetq that while he had no idea regarding the property holdings of the MP, Saroyan had no business links per say.

Right now, we only possess the 2009 financial disclosure statement of MP Saroyan.

According to the disclosure, as of 2009, Saroyan had 63,143,440 AMD
