Even if this is Comedistan, it is not funny, I am not laughing.. Dear Yervant, I don’t want to spoil your appetite, but this kind of articles make my stomach turn. Let us insist that the furkish word Դոլմա/dolma is in fact Տօլմա/Tolma, and watch them tear us apart and shred us to dolma stuffing/khiyma/ ground meat աղաց միս,/մսաղաց, and roast us like shish kebab.. I am waiting, I am not, to see that clown :jester: Sedrak tell us that yalanchi and chiy kufta are Armeno-Urartuan words. Above, see that nice lady say that Armenians have been cooking tolma for centuries. Where did she see that? Did Khorentsi and company say so? Can she tell us what they called it? Certainly not dolma as we did not speak that non- language for another 1000 years. Let me reiterate. The pictures we see labeled as dolma are not in fact so, those are sarma (leaf wrap) Տերեւ Փաթ(ոյթ) Terev (patouyt).. We need real scholarly linguists, not 16 year old journalis wannabe-s Why the hell was she in Baku, when, by her confession, she has not been in Yerevan?

Anti-Santa campaigns heat up in Turkey as Christmas arrives ISTAN-Bull

A Muslim youth group and a neighborhood authority led two separate anti-Santa campaigns on the eve of Christmas in Turkey. The Istanbul University branch of a group called Anatolia Youth Association (AGD) released an illustration of a Muslim youth punching Santa Claus in the face and announced that it would make a press statement against Christmas on Dec. 26 in Istanbul. The group announced the event with a statement titled “Muslim, return to yourself!” adding that “Christmas is a Christianity practice.” The group also criticized the celebration of New Year’s Day, saying that the two dates were “mixed” and “united.” It claimed that celebrating Christmas and New Year’s Day was “wrong” and constituted “a blow dealt to Muslimism.” Earlier this week, the Şirinevler muhtar, the head of the neighborhood, hung a banner making it clear that Santa Claus was not welcome on their streets. As in recent years, Santa Claus will not be coming to Şirinevler since he is nothing to do with our traditions and our culture,” muhtar Galip Karayiğit said in the statement. “[Turk legend character] Dede Korkut will come to our houses again, and will teach our children that they did not come into this world for pleasure, that they came to distribute justice.” December/24/2013

Turkey requests Santa Claus’ bones from Pope Saint Nicholas, a historic Christian saint, died in 343 at the age of 73 in Demre, currently a district of the Mediterranean Turkish province of Antalya. AFP Photo The Turkey-based Santa Claus Peace Council has said it has written a letter to Pope Francis, requesting the return of the bones of Saint Nicholas. Council Chairman Muammer Karabulut said they were expecting Pope Francis to give a positive response to their request to have a meeting on the bones, which are currently in Bari, Italy. “We have been struggling for the return of the bones since 1995. State institutions have also been involved in this struggle,” Karabulut said. “So far, we have not reached a conclusion.” Saint Nicholas, a historic Christian saint, died in 343 at the age of 73 in Demre, currently a district of the Mediterranean Turkish province of Antalya. His habit of performing miracles and his reputation of giving secret gifts to the faithful made him a model for Santa Claus. December/25/2013

BBC: Only foreign athletes will leave for Sochi to present Azerbaijan, but even that does not give Baku much hope for victory

Only foreigners will leave for Sochi from Azerbaijan to participate at the Olympic Games, but even the call for foreign- athletes under the Azerbaijani banner do not give Baku high hopes for victory and medals, this is stated in an article published on the website of the Russian BBC service.

As noted in the article, Azerbaijan has never been famous for victories in winter sports. Nevertheless, in 1998 Azerbaijan sent his team to the Winter Olympics for the first time; the group, however, included Russian athletes as well. Since then participation in the Winter Games became a tradition for Azerbaijan, as well as the fact that the names of the athletes representing Azerbaijan were not Azerbaijani.

Representatives of the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan said in an interview with Azerbaijani BBC Service, that the main thing for Azerbaijan is participation in the Olympics.

"One of the biggest and most prestigious events in the world will be attended by multi-million audience. If Azerbaijan is mentioned, at least for three times during the opening ceremony of the Olympics, it will be a big deal for us. What else do we need besides the publicity? We work for this," said the head of the Azerbaijani delegation at the Sochi Games Kenul Nurullayeva. She also accepts that the members of the Azerbaijani team are not strong enough to qualify for a medal.

"Then why do you involve athletes from outside, if you know that they cannot win Olympic medals?" the author wonders. Sports commentator Elchin Jalilov calls this approach a self-deception. "We go into a northern country and find there athletes that are not even in the top ten or top five at home," the commentator notes.

According to him, this happens because many areas of sport are in the hands of bureaucrats. The existing situation Jalilov believes is shameful.

Elshan Mammadov from the Center of Sports Studies in Baku notes that the Winter Sports Federation country has its own responsibilities: "If the Federation treated the athletes’ selection process at Winter Games seriously, then they could find at least one Azerbaijani athlete, living abroad, and could help him in preparation process."

Shocked Italian Nun Gives Birth to Baby Boy

A 31-year-old nun has given birth to a baby boy in Rieti, Italy, after experiencing abdominal pains she thought were stomach cramps.

After she was taken to a hospital, she gave birth to a baby and named him Francis after the current pope. The nun, originally from El Salvador, claims she had no idea she was pregnant.

The sister belongs to a convent which is located near the city of Rieti, which has a population of 47,700.

The nun belongs to the "Little Disciples of Jesus'' convent in Campomoro near Rieti, which manages an old people's home.

As news of the nun's pregnancy has spread, the mayor of Rieti, Simone Petrangi, asked local residents and media to give the woman privacy.

Clothes and donations have been collected and sent to the hospital where she gave birth.

"I did not know I was pregnant. I only felt a stomach pain," she told the Ansa news agency.

Other nuns at the convent also expressed shock at the mysterious pregnancy of a holy sister at their order, saying they were "very surprised", according to Italian media reports.

Don Fabrizio Borrelio, a local pastor, says he believes that the nun is telling the truth about being unaware of her pregnancy. He said the nun plans to take care of the baby herself.

The results of a study on reproductive health, published in the British Medical Journal, revealed that one in 200 US women claim to have given birth without ever having had sexual intercourse.

The BMJ reports that of the women who took part in the study, 45 (0.5%) reported at least one virgin pregnancy, "unrelated to the use of assisted reproductive technology".

They claim to have conceived without vaginal intercourse or in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).

The BMJ article notes that virgin births, or parthenogenesis (from the Greek parthenos for virgin and genesis for birth), can occur in non-humans as a consequence of "asexual reproduction, where growth and development of the embryo occurs without fertilisation".

However, the authors of the study, entitled "Like a virgin (mother)", warn that researchers need to take into account the possibility of fallible memory on the part of respondents

KOREAN SITE ON SERZH SARGSYAN'S REJUVENATION

The South Korean Chosunilbo website has dwelled on Serzh Sargsyan's
rejuvenation using the method of implantation of stem cells.

"Korea's booming medical tourism industry has for the first time
attracted a foreign head of state as the Armenian president had
rejuvenation treatment here recently. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
was driven by a convoy of black sedans to Chaum Center in Gangnam on
Jan. 9 led by a police escort. Chaum is a rejuvenation clinic run by
CHA Health Systems. Accompanying Sargsyan were the ex-president of a
former Soviet satellite nation and a Russian tycoon from Armenia. The
tycoon had also been part of Russian President Vladimir Putin's
entourage on his state visit last year and experienced the clinic's
service at the time.

The group visited Chaum every day during their weeklong stay here and
had treatment including stem cell therapy, spa and anti-aging therapy,
body polishes and massages and weight-control programs. Clinic staff
say Sargsyan was escorted by police and the National Intelligence
Service during his stay. The group paid a total of W200 million
(US$1=W1,076) for their treatment and left on Jan. 17. Since opening in
2010, Chaum has drawn many rich people from around the world who come
to Seoul in their private jets. Among them were Chinese and Canadian
business tycoons, the prime minister of Kazakhstan and Saudi and UAE
royalty. The reasons for medical tourism are diversifying.

Recently, former Korean national soccer coach Guus Hiddink visited
a hospital in Seoul to undergo knee surgery. Last year, more than
200,000 foreigners are estimated to have visited Korea for medical
treatment. The Health Ministry expects the number of medical tourists
to reach 1 million in 2020."

LETTERS : AZERBAIJAN'S CONCERN

The Guardian, Wednesday 29 January 2014 21.00 GMT

I am writing to express concern regarding your interview with Anastasia
Taylor-Lind about her photo of a wedding in Nagorno-Karabakh (My best
shot, G2, 24 January). Arts, including photography, can potentially
play an important role in bringing communities together, but people who
use the arts need to be objective, unbiased and aim to highlight the
plight of all people affected by conflicts. When reading the article,
it is sad to see how visiting and reporting about Nagorno-Karabakh can
play into the PR efforts of the separatist regime that exists there. Ms
Taylor-Lind should, rather, visit Azerbaijan to witness the plight
of hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons who were
forced to flee their homes in Nagorno-Karabakh. I am afraid reporting
on someone's happiness that exists at the expense of someone else's
misfortune does not help the efforts to bring peace and stability to
the region.

May I also stress that all unauthorised visits to the region of
Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan are
illegal. Nagorno-Karabakh is an internationally recognised part
of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and as such foreigners aiming to
visit Nagorno-Karabakh should do so through relevant Azerbaijani
authorities. All visitors going to Nagorno-Karabakh without
authorisation from the Republic of Azerbaijan are banned from visiting
Azerbaijan and will find it difficult to receive proper consular
assistance from the UK diplomatic missions in the region.

BAKU CONDEMNS LA COUNCIL FOR RECOGNITION OF "NAGORNO-KARABAKH REPUBLIC" INDEPENDENCE

AzerNews, Azerbaijan
Jan 30 2014

30 January 2014, 14:52 (GMT+04:00)
By Sara Rajabova

Azerbaijan has officially condemned the Los Angels City Council for
recognition of the so-called "Nagorno-Karabakh Republic".

Foreign Ministry's spokesman Elman Abdullayev said the LA City
Council's resolution on Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has been adopted
under pressure by the Armenian lobby of the city.

He went on saying that the adoption comes despite the fact that
several U.S. states have already condemned Armenia's aggressive
policies towards Azerbaijan.

Armenian media reported on January 29 that the LA City Council
has unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing the so-called
"Nagorno-Karabakh Republic" as an "independent" and "sovereign state".

Abdullayev stressed that the resolution was adopted under political
and financial pressure of the Armenian lobby on the City Council.

He said: "The position of the United States is clear. Washington
does not accept Nagorno-Karabakh as an independent state. It only
recognizes Azerbaijan`s territorial integrity and sovereignty."

Abdullayev said so far, various states in the U.S. have adopted 18
resolutions on the Khojaly tragedy, committed by the Armenian armed
forces in early 1990s and on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in general.

"Los Angeles City Council's adoption of the resolution recognizing
the separatist regime of Nagorno-Karabakh is just a pathetic attempt
on the part of the Armenian lobby," he added.

Abdullayev noted that earlier the Armenian lobby had put Highland
City Council under pressure to adopt a similar resolution.

"This is absurd, because the U.S. does not recognize any "republic"
called "Nagorno-Karabakh," Abdullayev said.

The City Council of Highland in California adopted in November 2013 two
proclamations, "recognizing the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic" and "establishing a sister city relationship with the city
of Berdzor in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic."

Abdullayev also noted the information disseminated by the Armenian
media, that Shusha and Los Angeles are twin cities, is false.

He said Shusha is not on the list of sister cities of Los Angeles,
and in no other way it could be, since this settlement is occupied.

Abdullayev also said the Consulate General of Azerbaijan in Los
Angeles has protested the adoption of this document.

Commenting on regular violation of ceasefire by the Armenian armed
forces, Abdullayev said Armenia confuses the world community, at the
same time by giving incorrect information to its citizens.

He noted however, the main reason of the all tension is that Armenia
has occupied territories of Azerbaijan and Yerevan has taken an
unconstructive stance.

Abdullayev stressed that without withdrawal of Armenian forces from
the occupied Azerbaijani territories, it is impossible to move to a
new stage over the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh.

He said however, Yerevan seeks to prolong the occupation of the
Azerbaijani territories by all possible means.

The tensions on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops
have escalated recently. In recent days the Armenian armed forces
violated ceasefire over 1000 times.

Armenia occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan's internationally
recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and seven adjacent
regions, after laying territorial claims against its South Caucasus
neighbor that had caused a lengthy war in the early 1990s.

The UN Security Council's four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal
have not been enforced to this day.

Peace talks, mediated by Russia, France and the US and the OSCE Minsk
Group are underway on the basis of a peaceful outline -called Madrid
Principle-proposed by the Minsk Group co-chairs. The negotiations
have been largely fruitless so far.

QUOTE
AZERBAIJANI SCIENTIST: "MARKING THE 2790TH ANNIVERSARY OF YEREVAN HAS NO SCIENTIFIC GROUND"

Azeri Press Agency

April 3 2008

Azerbaijan

Baku. Laura Jabrayilli-APA. "Marking the 2790th anniversary of Yerevan

within the framework of the International Assembly of Capitals and Big

Cities on October 11 this year has no scientific or historical grounds.

Yerevan was established during the Arabic period. Yerevan and

Western Azerbaijan do not belong to Armenians or Armenian history",

Deputy Director of History Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy

of Sciences Jabi Bahramov told APA. He said that Urartu sources,

scientific works by outstanding Russian historians, Igor Dyakonov,

Azerbaijani academician Igrar Aliyev, American scientist Armenian by

origin Nina Garsia and others showed that the Armenians had nothing

to do with this territory.

"After the spread of Christianity, churches, as well as Grigoryan

church started missionary activity beginning from the fifth century.

The churches sent missionaries to different places, as well as to the

territories around Van Lake in Turkey. In the first half of the 19th

century Armenians started to settle in the North Azerbaijan occupied

by Russia and Irevan khanate, a part of Azerbaijan. Armenian state

had existed neither in Turkey, nor in the territory of Azerbaijan by

1918. On May 29, 1918 Yerevan was yielded to Armenians, as a result

of it they managed to establish state with support of the English,

Americans and French. After North Azerbaijan was occupied by Soviet

Russia in 1920, measures were taken to extend Armenians' territory and

19.800 sq km territory of Soviet Azerbaijan was yielded to Armenians

as a result of direct pressure exerted by Soviet Russia", he said.

According to historical data, the history of ancient Azerbaijani

land - Yerevan as a city, castle started after the collapse of the

caliphate. The territory belonged to the Sajis of Turkish origin, then

Salaris and Ravvadis, Saljug Empire, Atabeys, Hulakis and in the 15th

century belonged to Garagoyunlus, Aggoyunlus and Sefevids. In the reign

of Sefevids, Yerevan became administrative center of Chukhursheher

beylerbeylik, finally Yerevan khanate, and with the occupation of

North Azerbaijan Yerevan province was established, and Republic of

Armenia was established after Yerevan was yielded on May 29, 1918.

Bahramov said these were historical facts and underlined that

Azerbaijan's related bodies should take a stance on marking the 2790th

anniversary of Yerevan on the international level.

They are right in that Nina Garsoian is a great Azerbaijani scholar.

As it was shown on Russian television, Diakonov is also a great Azerbaijani scholar.

Azerbaijan starts demanding officially from Armenia to liquidate fully
Armenian occupation consequences on its lands

Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Azerbaijan accedes to the International
Organization of Vine & Wine (OIV).

The Parliamentary Agrarian Policy Committee considered a law on
ratification of the agreement on the establishment of OIV.

Committee's chair Eldar Ibrahimov said that the agreement was signed
in 2001, and the instrument of ratification will indicate that
Azerbaijan does not cover the agreement on Armenia until the latter
withdraws from the occupied Azerbaijani territories and liquidates
fully the consequences of its occupation.

The meeting participants also discussed the amendments to the Law on
the Land Market. Ibrahimov also announced that the Committee will
present for the spring parliamentary session (its first plenary
meeting will be held on 3 February) the bills on the protection of
green spaces and on agricultural cooperatives.

Occupation of 20% of the territory of Azerbaijan started following
Nagorno Karabakh conflict and has been continuing for more than 20
years.

Turks & Armenians: challenged to build joint future
http://www.turkishpress.com/nws-i/387579-365.jpg

Old friends challenged to build joint future but as old Turkish proverb says 'old friends can never be enemies'.

By Emre Solak

ANKARA - Just imagine restaurants and cafes where the sound of Turkish music wafts in the air throughout the day. Imagine homes where Turkish movies capture the attention of the elderly, adults and children alike. Imagine markets full of Turkish food, from biscuits to jams, olive oil, and stuffed vine leaves...You may think these locations are in Istanbul or Ankara. But, you would be wrong!

Having lived in Los Angeles for over a decade, I have heard Turkish music, such as Tarkan, Ibrahim Tatlises, and Ajda Pekkan's coming from the homes of Armenians in Southern California.

When you enter ethnic Armenian markets in L.A, you can find Turkish cuisine locally made, such as sucuk (sausage) and lahmacun (Turkish pizza with a spicy meat filling). You can see how close Armenian culture is to that of Turkish, from the music and arts to cinema and to the cuisine itself.

On a personal level, some of my best friends in L.A. are Armenians. Whenever I visited the renowned Farmers Market close to Hollywood, I always visit Moishe's Restaurant which is operated by Mrs. Diroug and Movses Aroyan to enjoy grilled kebaps, stuffed grape leaves, spinach pie and, of course, baklava. Both Diroug and Movses always give a heartfelt and sincere welcome to me and my family. We are welcomed by them not just as customers buying lunch or dinner but as close friends.

Uncle Simon Karian, an Armenian who speaks Turkish fluently and an expert on auto repairs in southeast L.A., is another one of those close friends of mine. Uncle Simon always welcomes us to his store with a smiling face and a warm hand shake. He is as close to us as our actual uncle living in Eskisehir, Turkey. He is a good listener and a good advisor on life in general.

Turks and Armenians get along very well on a personal level. Yet, when it comes to politics, relations are quite tense. Before touching on the reasons for the tense political relations, it would be a good idea to briefly remember how close the Turks and Armenians were during the Ottoman Empire era.

For over five centuries, Turks and Armenians lived side by side in different parts of the Ottoman Empire. There were inter-cultural marriages between them and thousands of children whose father or mother were either Turkish or Armenian and vice versa. Many Armenians served as either high level bureaucrats or senior diplomats, including ambassadors and foreign ministers within the Ottoman Empire. There was a significant number of Armenian musicians, painters and artists and hundreds of Armenian families were successful tradesmen and business owners within the Ottoman Empire.

Armenians operated various foundations and associations, published newspapers in their native language and could perform their religious services in their own churches under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire. There was no problem in co-existence in the Ottoman era up until World War I when Russian troops invaded parts of eastern Anatolia and a certain number of nationalist Armenians joined Russian ranks against the Ottoman government. Many Armenian gangs burned villages and killed a large number of Muslim Turks. Due to the uprising by a considerable number of its citizens of Armenian origin, the Ottoman administration decided to relocate a part of the Armenian population to the southern regions. During the relocation and the ongoing civil war in Anatolia, a certain number of Armenians died due to famine, bad weather conditions, poverty and inter-communal strife. Once a very loyal part of the Ottoman Empire, a portion of the Armenians of eastern Anatolia rose up against their own government by taking the side of the invading Russian forces. According to Ottoman history, hundreds of Armenians allegedly died during the civil war in Anatolia but there was never an Ottoman order made to systematically exterminate the whole Armenian population of the empire. Since World War I, the Armenian diaspora claims that the events of the era constituted a “genocide”. This is a charge completely rejected by the Turkish government.

The Turkish government has called on all historians to study the Ottoman archives pertaining to the era in order to scientifically study what really happened then between the Ottoman government and its Armenian citizens. The Turks agree that there were certainly Armenian casualties during World War I. The debate on “genocide” and the differing opinions between the present day Turkish government and the Armenian diaspora along with the current administration in Yerevan still generates political tension between the Turks and Armenians. Turkey's official position against the “genocide” allegations is that they acknowledge that the past experiences were a great tragedy and that both parties suffered heavy casualties, but that it is impossible to define these incidents as “genocide”. Turkey also recognizes that during World War I, hundreds of Muslim Turks lost their lives also.

The other important issue that causes tension between Turkey and Armenia is with Armenia's lack of recognition of the border between the two countries. In 1991, the Armenian Parliament adopted a resolution refuting the validity of the Treaties of Kars and Gyumri (the Treaty of Alexandropol) which defined the border between the two countries in 1921.

According to the Center for Strategic Research, “on August 10, 1920, the Armenians joined in signing the long-hoped-for Treaty of Sevres, which stipulated that the Ottoman government recognize the establishment of an independent Armenian state, with boundaries to be determined by U.S. President Wilson. This treaty was, however, signed only by the Ottoman government in Istanbul, while most Turks, and most of the country accepted the leadership of the Ankara government, led by Mustafa Kemal, who actively opposed the treaty and its provisions.”

The Armenian propagandists claim that the Sevres Agreement, which allowed for the establishment of an Armenian state in eastern Anatolia, is still legally in force, and use it to base their claims for the 'return' of 'Armenian lands'. Turkish and many other historians stress that this agreement was never put into force. It was superseded and replaced by the Treaty of Lausanne, which renders the previous Sevres agreement outlawed.

The third issue that strains relations between Turkey and Armenia as well as the Armenian diaspora is the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Nagorno-Karabakh is a region in the west of Azerbaijan, where Armenians constitute the majority. In the 1980s, according to political scientist Yoko Hirose, the efforts of Armenians living in this region to unite with Armenia intensified, and consequently armed conflict broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Although this skirmish ended with a ceasefire in 1994, Armenia still occupies twenty percent of Azerbaijan's territories in spite of decisions made by international law and the United Nations General Assembly. The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan badly influenced Turkey-Armenia relations and eventually led to the closure of the common border between the two countries. Turkey's expectations regarding the Nagorno-Karabakh problem is that Armenia should obey international law and stop occupying Azerbaijani territories.

However, history cannot be changed and casualties on the Turkish and Armenian sides during World War I cannot be reversed. Painful memories from both sides from that era onwards still linger. However, hope remains that the border recognition and the Nagorno-Karabakh issue may be resolved through tools of diplomacy; dialogue, mutual trust and sincerity.

If Turks and Armenians can be good friends in different parts of the world ranging from L.A. to Sydney or from Paris to Istanbul, at a personal level, is it therefore possible that the Ankara and Yerevan governments could also? Anadolu Agency (AA) asked various experts about how the Turks and Armenians and their respective governments can jointly shape the future and reactivate the strong bonds that were once part of their relations both in Anatolia and elsewhere within Ottoman society.

With regards to the relocation of Armenians during World War I, Chairman of the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVIM) based in Ankara, retired ambassador Alev Kilic stressed that “war-time conditions, exacerbated by internal strife; local groups seeking revenge; banditry; famine; epidemics and the general lawlessness of a collapsing (Ottoman) state all combined to produce a painful tragedy that was beyond any contingency expectation.”

“Officials/civilians who disobeyed the instructions of the Ottoman government to carry out the relocation in an orderly and secure way were court-martialed and those found guilty were sentenced to capital punishment by the government in 1916, long before the end of the First World War,” Kilic noted.

“Insisting on 'genocide' as the only way to describe the Armenian experience, while ignoring Turkish losses, is not a proper way to honor the memory of those who lost their lives, nor does it correctly reflect the historical record,” Kilic underlined.

If the Armenian government and the Armenian diaspora give up the allegations of “genocide”, this can pave the way for better relations between the Turks and Armenians, Kilic stated.

“Turks and Armenians should work to rebuild their historical friendship without forgetting the difficult periods in their past. It needs to be remembered that, despite the events of World War I, until the Armenian assassination (of Turkish diplomats and their family members) and the PR campaigns that began in the early 1970s, Armenians and Turks were very close to each other on a social level, and they still are today in some expatriate communities,” Kilic indicated.

“Individual Turks and Armenians share a common Anatolian and Ottoman heritage and most aspects of its culture, even language. This may be the reason why today's Armenian radical opponents of Turkey insist on not having contacts of any sort with Turks or Turkey: they are trying to sever this heritage of mutual acceptance and shared heritage,” Kilic pointed out.

“In the endeavor to overcome historical and political bitterness, all sides must be honest and open-minded,” Kilic emphasized.

“A process of true dialogue, learning to respect the other side's truths, gradually building up respect through familiarity and empathy may well be possible. Could that not help Turkish and Armenian narratives come closer together around a “just memory”? Believing that this is possible, Turkey proposed the establishment of a joint commission composed of Turkish and Armenian historians, and other international experts, to study the events of 1915 in the archives of Turkey, Armenia and in third countries (such as Great Britain and Russia). The findings of the commission might bring about a fuller and fairer understanding of this tragic period on both sides and hopefully contribute to normalization between Turks and Armenians,” Kilic said.

Ambassador Kilic stressed that the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in a 82-page ruling made on December 17, 2013 overturned a decision of a Lausanne court criminalizing the denial of the “Armenian genocide” underlying the fact that it is incorrect to describe the events of 1915 as an “Armenian genocide” and while only the parliaments of 20 countries out of a total of more than 200 countries, have adopted resolutions on the “genocide”, such resolutions were not adopted by the respective governments and could not be binding. According to Kilic, the ECHR also reminded that, while the Holocaust (of Jews) has been proven with documents and clear evidence, the allegations of an “Armenian genocide” cannot be evaluated in the same context as the Holocaust.

The ECHR stated that the Holocaust had no ties to the events of 1915 whatsoever, Kilic noted.

Kilic believes that the Turks and Armenians can re-establish strong, warm and friendly bonds in the near future as communities who have lived side by side for centuries.

“I have had Armenian friends in various countries where I served. We just do not consider the Armenians as our 'enemy',” Kilic also said.

Kamer Kasim, Vice-President of the International Strategic Research Organization (USAK) based in Ankara, said that Turkey recognized the Armenian republic after the disintegration of the former Soviet Union but that normal relations could not be established with this state.

“One of the reasons for the lack of normal relations between Turkey and Armenia has to do with the independent Armenian republic's foreign policy of trying to get the 'genocide' recognized internationally,” Kasim said.

“The second reason for lack of normal relations between Turkey and Armenia has to do with Armenia's non-acceptance of Turkey's territorial integrity,” Kasim expressed.

“And, the third reason is the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh,” Kasim noted.

“Despite the first two reasons, the Turkish-Armenian border was open. However, after the continuation of Armenian occupation in Karabakh, Turkey closed its border with Armenia in 1993,” Kasim stated.

“There were some attempts in the past to normalize relations between Turkey and Armenia such as the establishment of the Turkish-Armenian Reconciliation Commission,” Kasim said.

Nevertheless, some Armenian members of this Commission were threatened by the Armenian diaspora and the Commission was not able to reach concrete results, Kasim stressed.

Past meetings between Turkish and Armenian journalists and academics with the goal to normalize relations failed as they could not make progress with the Yerevan government vis-a-vis the three reasons for tension in bilateral relations, Kasim pointed out.

The protocols signed between Turkey and Armenia in late 2009 were designed to restore diplomatic relations and create an opportunity to discuss their shared history. "Turkey's proposal to establish a history commission in 2009 (to study the events of 1915) was not realized," Kasim noted.

“While the Armenian Constitutional Court said that the signed protocols with Turkey were in conformity with the Armenian Constitution, the Court underlined that no Armenian administration could question the reality of the 'Armenian genocide',” Kasim said.

Such a Court decision handicapped the Yerevan government from joining a history commission proposed by Turkey to study the incidents of 1915, Kasim emphasized.

Kasim underlined that “in order for Turkey-Armenia relations to normalize, Armenian troops must withdraw from Karabakh.”

"Armenia must end occupying 20 percent of Azerbaijan's territory. It would not be realistic to expect Turkey to open its border with Armenia unless the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh ends. Furthermore, allegations of a genocide should no longer be Armenia's official state policy if normalized relations with Turkey are desired," Kasim remarked.

He stressed that with Armenian diaspora's stance on the issue and with the democratization of Armenia, a positive impact could be made on Armenian-Turkish relations by allowing the presentation of Turkey's arguments regarding the 1915 events to be brought to the fore for discussion.

Onur Gokce, retired ambassador and a current lecturer at Bilkent University's International Relations Department, said that “As regards to what can be done to co-exist and build a common and promising future between Turkey and Armenia, my opinion would be to try to find effective ways to strengthen dialogue between the two countries and their respective peoples to start with.” “The Orthodox Church can and should play a role, since in essence, it mainly concerns the Armenian community,” Gokce noted.

“Also, a way must be found to curb the ambitions of the Armenian Diaspora and their influence on Armenia and their lobbying activities in the USA and other important international spheres. This is the most difficult part because the issue has folded into becoming in time a matter of absolute survival for certain Armenian circles,” Gokce underlined.

“To create common interests and benefits between the two countries would be helpful, particularly in the security and economic fields. Is history and religion a barrier to progress? It should not be, as evidenced by the Ottoman experience. However, the features and the realities of our contemporary times must be taken into consideration to be able to manage the new conditions that have emerged,” Gokce emphasized.

“In any case, the red lines of each side would have to be crossed before a meaningful and lasting relationship can be established. But the issue has become multi-faceted and multi-dimensional. There are multiple players on stage,” Gokce stated.

“Progress and normalization in bilateral relations does not depend only on the efforts of the two countries. The best way to deal with such a situation, in the meantime, would be to find ways to build confidence between the two countries and show, if possible, resistance in coordination against regional and outside interventions and above all be prepared to give concessions for the common interest of the two countries in the region. All said is a tall order. But, so is the issue,” Gokce also said.

It is clear that both Turkey and Armenia need to take confidence building measures (CBMs) to build a joint future and overcome challenges to the relations.

Turkey has already taken significant CBMs to improve relations with Armenia such as granting 200 transit permit licenses for 2011 within the scope of the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC). These permits allow Armenian trucks to transport goods back and forth through Turkey between Armenia and third countries.

Turkey has enabled the children of the Armenian citizens who reside illegally in Turkey to attend the minority schools in Turkey as guest students.

Turkey has given permission to a private telecommunication company to establish direct fiber optic connection with Armenia.

Turkey invited Armenian diplomats to attend the Turkish Foreign Ministry's diplomatic academy program for 2012. However, the Armenian side chose not to respond.

Turkey has taken the necessary steps to list the city of Ani (a ruined Armenian medieval city located in Turkey), as Turkey's candidate to the World Heritage List. In this regard, the works to restore the Cathedral of Ani has been accelerated in recent years.

Turkey has intensified its program toward restoration/renovation of Armenian churches in the country.

Turkey continues to promote the cooperation among NGOs and labor unions and support the participation of its institutions in events organized in Armenia. The Civilitas Foundation, an Armenian NGO based in Yerevan, has announced last November the launch of its presence in Istanbul.

Turkey has facilitated the return of or compensation for properties previously owned by religious community foundations.

Finally, Turkey has kept its borders open to the Syrian Armenians who had to flee Syria due to conflicts, without any discrimination.

It is highly important that Armenia responds to Turkey's CBMs with its own CBMs to repair and carry forward relations. If Turks and Armenians can be good friends in different corners of the globe, so can the governments of Turkey and Armenia as two neighbors.

As a Turkish proverb goes, old friends can never be enemies...

They Just Don’t Get It

BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

It’s unfortunate that some people are stupid. This stupidity can be intellectual, political, or integrity-based (i.e. lacking it). It’s just as unfortunate that these people are everywhere, among Armenians, Turks, and everything in-between and beyond. A sampling of the latest in the realm of stupidity follows. In all this, let’s also grant the benefit of the doubt to my paragons of stupidity, in that they are not acting cynically. That may be a stretch, but, let’s be kind to them…

Let’s start with the most obvious target, a Turk named Emre Solak, living in Los Angeles whose piece “Turks & Armenians: challenged to build joint future” was published by Anadolu (a Turkish news agency). In this, Solak cites the example of his Armenian friends, a restaurant-owning couple and a mechanic, with whom he gets along just swell. He ends his piece with what he says is a Turkish proverb “old friends can never be enemies…”, neglecting what every introductory economics student learns about the fallacy of composition. Just because something is good when one person does it, does not mean it will be good if a large group does it. Solak also quotes other Turks sounding oh-so-reasonable, that as long as “Armenia” “occupies” “Azeri” lands, borders can’t be opened and progress can’t be made. He waxes nostalgic for Ottoman days when Armenians and Turks got along famously. Yes, I suppose they did, in the same way as a slave and a slave-owner get along. The oppressed, second-class subject (not even citizen) status of Armenians in those days seems to elude Solak. So does the difference between state-planned genocide imposed on Armenians and the suffering of Moslems during the same time period brought on by the very bad foreign policies of the same government of the Ottoman Empire. Can he be that stupid?

Let’s move to the pup-Turks’ ongoing stupidity. Azerbaijan, or at least its officials, continue to harbor, and honor, a convicted axe-murderer. The guy, Safarov, has been made into a national “hero”. This is even while we solemnly honor Lt. Margarian on the tenth anniversary of his brutal murder as he slept by the same killer. Can the Azeris be so stupid as to see how murderously bloodthirsty and foolish this makes them look?

Let’s move on to Azeri inspired stupidity. You of course read about the pro-Azeri resolutions of two Hawaiian state legislators. Of course these two “only wanted to recognize an ally” and “injustice” committed against people. Did they bother to do the slightest bit of research into the context of the incident at Khojaluh? Had they, it would have become quickly evident that the Azeris killed their own people and that the whole thing happened while Armenians were finally throwing off the yoke of the Azeris who had committed pogrom after pogrom. That’s not to mention the services provided by Armenia to U.S. interests while Azerbaijan was utilizing the services of (likely jihadist) Afghan mercenaries. Here, we have to believe that the trip of these two deluded legislators to Azerbaijan had nothing to do with their ill-advised legislation. Can they be that stupid?

And now, we’ll move from legislators to other, quasi-governmental officials, this time, sadly, in Armenia. You are probably aware of the heated response to the recently imposed and poorly conceived pension system in Armenia. Many are protesting it, even taking to the streets. Among those were transit workers. Regardless of what you think of this system, I will assume that you do not object to citizens taking public action against what they deem is a bad policy of their government. So you will probably find it reprehensible that three employees of Yerevan’s metro system, a state run enterprise, were fired just two days after being active participants in a demonstration against the new pension system. In time-honored fashion, a spokeswoman for the metro agency said the men’s firing had nothing to do with their demonstrating. Rather, we are told, it was because their supervisor was unhappy with their work. Quite the coincidence, isn’t it? This is nothing but indirect, government-condoned, intimidation of those who dare to act as true citizens. Are the metro’s upper echelons so stupid as to believe that we’re going to believe their excuses?

Keep an eye out for stupidity, anywhere. It’s quite prevalent. Speak out against it, forcefully. Otherwise, the quality of all our lives will be compromised, everywhere.

Football club ‘‘Atletico Madrid’’ didn’t assist Azerbaijani propaganda even for money

Information was circulated in Azerbaijani media, allegedly, in honor of the memory of victims of Aghdam events that took place in 1992, the footballers of Spanish "Atletico Madrid" football club were to come to the meeting with the "Osasuna" and "Real Madrid" teams with black crape bands on their hands." However, during the game there were neither crape bands, nor even ordinary black bandages on the hands of the "Atletico" footballers.

According to the Azerbaijani news portal "Haqqin.az", there was not even a minute of silence.

In this regard portal lays claims to Hafiz Mammadov, Azerbaijani oligarch. "What can we say about a man who spends millions of dollars on t-shirts of football clubs but is unable to oblige a club to respect his own country, even for money? There is nothing to say ..." complains the Azerbaijani website.

On February 26, 1992, during the war in Karabakh, around 200 to 300 people (according to Human Right Watch, and 600 according to the version propagated by Azerbaijan) were killed in unknown circumstances near the city of Aghdam. They have been deliberately withheld by the Azerbaijani authorities in the midst of the military actions. Population of the village of Khojalu, which was one of the firing points shooting at the blockaded Stepanakert (among five others) was kept in the village for months by force and was not evacuated by the authorities of Azerbaijan deliberately, in order to use them as human shields later.

Residents of Khojalu coming out through the humanitarian corridor, that the self-defense forces of NKR had left open, freely passed more than 10 km and reached the Aghdam city controlled by the Azerbaijani troops. Later, not far from the positions of Azerbaijani troops dead bodies of the villagers were found. The exact death toll remains unknown as the official Baku publishes data contradicting each other. Parliamentary Commission investigating the tragic death of the civilians at Aghdam city was dissolved by the order of Heydar Aliyev, the investigative materials are kept secret.

No banners promoting Azerbaijani version of Aghdam events detected on Times Square

Azerbaijani media actively disseminate information that allegedly the monitors installed in the center of Times Square in New York City demonstrate graphics, for already several days, promoting Azerbaijani version of Aghdam events taken place in 1992.

"Unlike the last year, this year every two minutes a video lasting 30 seconds appears on two large screens in the Times Square," the statement reads.

In this regard, a reader turned to Panorama.am editorial office, and provided a video footagewhich clearly showed that on February 22, in 2014 there have been no graphics, posters or banners detected on the Times Square concerning the Aghdam events. The video that lasts for more than two minutes shows advertisements changing one after another and there is no Azerbaijani video shown there.

The movie telling about Aghdam events was not detected also on the 23rd of February.

Pope Francis Lets A Vulgarity Slip During Vatican Address

March 03, 201412:31 PM

It was a simple slip of the tongue, people say. But when the pope accidentally utters a vulgarity during a public speech, people notice. That's what happened during Sunday's weekly blessing by Pope Francis, sparking a flurry of comments on social media.

The pope quickly realized his misstep and corrected himself. But there are things people simply cannot un-hear, and this seems to be one of them.

"The words the Pope stumbled on were 'caso' (example) and 'cazzo' which means 'f***' in Italian and often trips up those not used to speaking the language," as Britain's The Daily Mail reports. The Telegraph reports that the word has other translations.

Yet another brilliant news from non other than himself Mr. Hayvanoglu (halacaoglu).

DINK MURDER PROMPTER IS ARMENIAN - TURKISH HISTORIAN

March 03, 2014 | 13:27

Turkey's opposition Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) MP, historian
Yusuf Halacoglu stated that Erhan Tuncel, who was accused of prompting
the murder of Hrant Dink--founder and chief editor of Agos Armenian
weekly of Istanbul, who was killed on January 19, 2007 in front of
the weekly's office--, is Armenian.

Halacoglu, who is known for his statements denying the Armenian
Genocide, claimed that Tuncel, who is in prison at present, is from
Temte village of Turkey's Elazig [Kharberd, in Armenian] Province,
and he is of Armenian descent, reports Cihan news agency of Turkey.

"For this reason, it should be taken under consideration the fact
that an Armenian has had a role in the killing of an Armenian. Now,
I'm not saying its significance, but this should be taken seriously,"
Yusuf Halacoglu noted.

Yes Yervant. My house (is) your house.. Or is it - Mine is bigger than yours? Amot!

This is reminiscent of a story I had read long time ago, that went something like Պատրիարքը Հիւանդ Է/The Patriarch is Sick/ The Patriarch is Senile./Պատրիարքը Խրֆել է

The Patriarch had had a stroke, he could hardly stand up, he could not speak legibly, he slurred his words so much so that at times he would sound like saying censored words, he stumbled, hemmed and hawed, Yet he stubbornly refused to step down and relinquish his throne.

Brings to mind Mutafoghlu of stanbull, who to this day is still considered the legitimately elected? patriarch. Who, according to hush hush is intellectually compromised.

I wish I could remember who the writer and who the said patriarch were. Was it Baronian? Maybe not, but it is typically in his satirical style. I wish we had more geniuses of his kind.
