It is a love - hate relationship bordering on the insane. It's so true ! If I remember well,... it really starts when the daughter is 15/16. may be cause she really starts to be a woman, she takes her mother's place, the new generation. At this moment, the mother's got the " power ", she works, she has kids, house, husband, she's not too old, still nice, but... she sees her daughter grow up, and little by little come to take her place... and it's difficult to let someone replace you ! But the daughter is not a poor innocent, she " pushes " her mother, cause she has to take her place too !!! It's difficult for both, cause there's a lot of LOVE between a mother and a daughter ! (it's sweet, I use to love to be kissed by my Mum, and use to love to kiss her, and at the same time, sometimes she makes me wonder !!!) I think the relation is a bit better when the daughter becomes a mother, and lives... a bit away from her mom.
