Armenians And Coffee Shops

"The most prevalent mode of recreation [for Armenians] is sitting in groups in houses or at coffee-houses talking, discussing politics and sipping Turkish coffee. Men flock to these places day and night, sitting around tables, sipping blank coffee, smoking cigars, or more commonly cigarettes....and discussing everything-business, news of national interest..."

At first glance the reader would think the above statement is referring to life today in Glendale or any other densely populated Armenian neighborhood. But believe it or not, the above quote is from a 1923 (yes, you read correctly--over 80 years ago) publishing regarding Armenian life in Los Angeles.

I came across it when doing some research on the history of Armenians in the LA area and thought it was interesting enough to share.

The Greeks call it Greek coffee; Armenians call it Armenian coffee while all the rest call it Turkish coffee. Indeed the method of preparation of the so-called "Turkish" coffee was first introduced to Europe by an Armenian merchant, who opened the first coffee shops in Vienna and Prague.

If you don't trust me do a google search! I read a whole book long time ago about the history of the coffee making and coffee business. This was back in the times when I was dreaming about my own coffee shop.

Nowadays I want to have a strip bar!

what the heck is BLOT?

Azat, you don't know what "blot" is.

Amot qezi! And you pretend to be Armenian!!??

:) :)

It is a passion of Beirutsis and Haleptsis.

http://www.pagat.com/jass/belote.html

However, when I first read tis new item, before I got to the punch line I thought it was about the Opera Square in Yerevan.

In fact, if one our geeks could design a program we could play it on the air.

Mind you, when said Beirutsi and Haleptsi I mean Բէյրուտահայ and Հալէպահայ.

The natives don't know the game. The Lebanese play a card game similar to belote but not quite, I never learned it, they call it "tarnib" which in their idiotic Arabic script transliteration is meant to be "trump".

Anahid will explain how an English/Latin word like "trump" ends up as "tarnib" in Arabic.

Those idiot Lebanese. Why do they even speak Arabic!! Whatever happened to Phoenician who are credited with the invention of te Greek/Latin alphabet??

And why do Egyptians speak Arabic/

Isn't their native language suppsed to be Coptic/Ghpti? The very name of Egypt/Egyptos/Եգիպտոս is derived fro Ghpti/Gypti/Egypti.

while some may not like the idea of young armenian men playing belote... belote is one of the most analytical and brain-challenging card games... mastering this game will open up a completely new way of looking/analyzing things... especially since the new hights and complicities that belote has reached in armenia, evolving from a simple french card game to an armenian chess-like card game...

and i'm being completely serious here....
