karakash
It really is not. I may simplify it. However, speaking of "nard", not "tavloo", I posted the following some time ago but got no response. http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=12778 No one I know says "nard," but I have heard "nardee" in Armenia and wherever I've seen Hayastantzis. Everyone else I know from the Middle East and in the USA says tavloo or tavlee. Do the people in Armenia use the Turkish/Kurdish or whatever language it is for the numbers - like shesh besh, eekee beer, etc. The guys in our family here in the NJ play "tavlee," use shesh besh and similar terms, drink scotch or oghi, and feast off a bowl of "moushekel" from Haleb. Maral
"The most prevalent mode of recreation [for Armenians] is sitting in groups in houses or at coffee-houses talking, discussing politics and sipping Turkish coffee. Men flock to these places day and night, sitting around tables, sipping blank coffee, smoking cigars, or more commonly cigarettes....and discussing everything-business, news of national interest..." At first glance the reader would think the above statement is referring to life today in Glendale or any other densely populated Armenian neighborhood. But believe it or not, the above quote is from a 1923 (yes, you read correctly--over 80 years ago) publishing regarding Armenian life in Los Angeles. I came across it when doing some research on the history of Armenians in the LA area and thought it was interesting enough to share. rostom www.hayk.net "Everything changes, everything stays the same." Zartonk
The Greeks call it Greek coffee; Armenians call it Armenian coffee while all the rest call it Turkish coffee. Indeed the method of preparation of the so-called "Turkish" coffee was first introduced to Europe by an Armenian merchant, who opened the first coffee shops in Vienna and Prague. If you don't trust me do a google search! I read a whole book long time ago about the history of the coffee making and coffee business. This was back in the times when I was dreaming about my own coffee shop. Nowadays I want to have a strip bar! Oh, gamo.. I had actually heard of these Viennese srjarans while in Austria. To me, "Turkish" coffee is as Turkish as the "Turkish city" of Troy or the "Turkish mountain" of "Agri Dagh"...
Takoush
By the way I heard about this Turkish coffee business but I thought I heard that it was brought here to the U.S. by an Armenian and instead he called it Turkish coffee. I didn't know that it was in Vienna, Europe. Edited December 7, 2005 by Anahid Takouhi

Arpa
By the way I heard about this Turkish coffee business but I thought I heard that it was brought here to the U.S. by an Armenian and instead he called it Turkish coffee. I didn't know that it was in Vienna, Europe. Yes, just like every other Armenian delicacy Haykakan Sourj was also first brought to America by Armenians bur was introduced as TC. This subject has been discussed here on numerous occasions and every time I have posed the following not so rhetorical question; We all know about Colombian coffee, Brazilian etc. but pray tell where in Turkey does coffee grow? On Agri Dag you say? As to that sacred mountain , they may have renamed it aptly as one day it will cause them intense pain(agri) in their you know what. Even though, loosely speaking that designation may sound like it means “pain”, in fact it none other than a corruption of the Armenian Aghori/Aghouri/Agori. We have spoken about that too. Here is that story about Vienna coffee.; http://savvytraveler.publicradio.org/show/.../feature2.shtml
