It is a great wine for the price(7-9 dollar range in California). a similar wine from CA would cost you in the neighborhood of 20-25. Make sure to open the bottle 30 minutes to an hour in advance to let it breath. In general if you have a decanter your wine will taste MUCH better Gee thanks Azat; you have a lot of knowledge about wines. It's great to know these things. I never knew for example, that you have to air it for up to one hour. I'll do that for all my wines from now one. Gracias signor. vava Posted March 7, 2006 Report Share Posted March 7, 2006 It used to be a common misconception that you would decant only older/aged wine - and you would do so to avoid any sediment in the glass. While this is still true, younger wines (especially young wines from varietals like Syrah/Shiraz) benefit greatly from decanting. For example a young Cabernet Sauvignon may be quite heavy in tannins, making it not very pleasant on the palette for some tastes - decanting will help take a bit of the 'edge' off. Altough some lighter wines inclusive of some reds, will hardly benefit from decanting. Azat makes a good point about the glass and although it seems flaky, it's true. I've actually gone to wine tastings where we've sampled the same wines from different glasses - sure enough the glass has a huge impact upon your perception of the wine's qualities. The key her is to make sure that the glass matches the wine - ie. drink bordeaux from a glass designed for bordeaux. You could drink a fine chardonnay from a very expensive glass that has been designed for sauvignon blanc and you will be sorely disappointed in your wine. Georg Riedel has been touting his glasses for some time now - and they're really fine. But how many of us can afford to buy glasses for each style of wine we drink? BtW; quite a few years ago My husband and I went to CA w/his busines and at a banquet all we did was tasting wine; by the time we were through tasting, I couldn't keep my eyes open. Vava, the cheapest Riedel glasses are about $40 for a set of 4 here in so cal. Well last xmas I went to Trader Joes(the store that you had liked alot) and guess what they had on special. 4 for $11. I got 2 set of 3 kinds. Chard, Cab, Syrah, and Champaigne. Really really nice. I also got one of his decanters that was 10 dollars when it retails for 45 in stores. Trader Joes rules. Although last night I had a nice Italian Barbera - excellent with the grilled veal we were having. The cheapest I have seen anywhere is $36 dollars. Parker 92- "No Shiraz Integrity was made in 2004, so the superb 2004 Shiraz 9 includes the wine that would have been earmarked for that flamboyant cuvee. The rich, full-bodied, opulent Shiraz 9 boasts abundant amounts of concentrated blackberry and cassis fruit intermixed with smoke, camphor, and tar notes. Azat Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Share Posted March 16, 2006 WOWWWWWWWWWWW In general I do not love Muscat wine but today I went to a wine warehouse and the owner highly recommended a bottle of Muscat so I had to get it. Yalumba Muscat Museum Reserve - It was only 12 dollars a bottle and I have to say it is amazing. And I just read Robert Parker gave it 98 out of 100 points. Spectacular. Couple of other highly recommended inexpensive wines. 2003 Castano Solanera - This is a super duper red wine and only 10 dollars a bottle. WA 91pts. 2003 Saint-Benoit Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Grande Garde - Heaven must be full of chateauneuf wine. This is such a great wine. I am starting to like chateauneufs better than CA Cabs. And for only 16 dollars and worth every penny. Cant go wrong with it. I had to call my wine broker to find it but for 25 dollars it is the best spanish red I have ever had. From what I know, Montsant is a new Appellation (DO in Spain) where lots of 'new world' style wines are being made. I think it neighbours Priorat, which has been a Parker fave, and I read somewhere that he has ranked wines of that region very highly in the recent past. Probably because the style of wine being elaborated there is destined for NA markets. Both regions are near Penedes, which has been producing and exporting wines to Canada for some time, although that specific wine is likely not available here.
