"Multi Fresh" Dutch company will sign a contract on supply of a thousand tons of tomato paste, which will be provided by an Armenian enterprise processing vegetables and fruits. Before making their final choice, the Dutch had studied and exposed to expert analysis all the kinds of the tomato paste being produced in Armenia. Having bought and successfully sold on the European market 370 tons of Armenian tomato paste, they have come to a conclusion on expediency of signing a contract for larger amounts. The Armenian partner of the Dutch does not wish his name to be announced until the volume of the order increases ten times.

IT IS ALREADY FOURTH TIME THAT ARMENIAN ART IS REPRESENTED AT VENICE BIENNIALE The Armenian works of art, exhibited in Venice have received a lot of attention because of their originality. Armenian avant-garde artists have been participating in the biennial since 1995, at the initiative and financial support of Sonya and Edward Palasanian, founders of the innovative experimental arts center. Three Armenian avant-garde artists have received high praise from foreign media and art critics. Preparation for the 49th biennial started in November 2000, with 15 participants. Deputy Minister of Culture Karen Aristakessian, who has just come back from Venice, has stated that from now on the government will also participate in supporting the Armenian artists in participating in the Venice biennial. The Armenian President has promised to help in the negotiations with the Venice Mayor so that Armenia can have its own stand during the exhibition. The Deputy Minister also informed that in a few days, a special committee would be set up to start preparing for the 50th biennial. The Armenian stand for the next biennial will also be prepared by the Innovative Experimental Arts Center. Edward Palasanian has been appointed to represent the Armenian stand. THE NATO PROJECT OF COMPUTER NET DEVELOPMENT WILL IMPROVE THE INTERNET-CONNECTION 02.07.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/. The consulting group meeting on questions of the NATO computer nets, held in Yerevan, has finished. The meeting was dedicated to the NATO scientific program, according to which at the end of this year in Armenia the "Virtual Silk Way" program project will be implemented. The project aims to improve the computer net connections of the scientific and educational institutes of South Caucasus, Central Asia with European regions. According to "Arka" agency information, the project cost is $2.5 million. It will function till 2005. The program director of NATO Science department, Valter Kaffenberger stated, the results of three-day discussion had not been totaled yet. The program director also stated that the line speed would be 3 megabyte/second. According to V. Kaffenberger, the system enables to increase the speed, also the price for a megabyte/sec will be less. According to V. Kaffenberger, the project will enable to improve Armenia internet-connection.

THE INVESTIGATION OF ZORY BALAYAN HAS BEEN SUSPENDED 02.07.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/. As it is known the legal bodies of Azerbaijan by the means of Interpole announced investigation of the writer Zori Balayan. With the efforts of the ministry of RA and the representatives of Interpol in Armenia the question of the investigation suspend has been presented for examining to the supervisory council of Interpol archive control committee. In the department of the public relations of the RA internal affairs the "Armenpress" correspondent was informed that it had been received the answer of the Interpol general secretariat on Saturday. Taking as a starting point the decision of the supervisory council, the Interpol secretary-general Ronald Noble had made a decision to suspend the international investigation of Zory Balayan, taking into consideration that it has political nature and it is contrary to the requirements of the chapter 3 of the Interpol charter. According to the charter Interpol is not engaged in struggle with political, military and racist crimes.

In Strasbourg the summer session of the European Council Parliament Assembly has finished its work. According to the agency "Turan", the Azerbaijan delegation succeeded to "move forward" the document related to the "admission of the Azerbaijani people genocide by Armenians". At the meeting of the Parliament Assembly of European Coucil, according to the Azerbaijani delegation representative, Samed Seidov, the document was signed by 43 deputies of EUPA. Soon the third edition of the document will be published. Besides, the Azerbaijan delegation addressed the EC Cabinet of Ministers a request to admit the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. According to Azerbaijani Member of Parliament this demarche was the answer to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, V. This is the first visit of Turkish military leader of such rank to Georgia. CANADIANS SEARCH FOR OIL IN GEORGIA 02.07.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/. Canadian Oil Company "Indusmin energy" has proceeded to research work conducting in two geologic blocks in Imeretia. The seismic researches conducted by this company has given encouraging information about oil reserve. According to CNA information, "Indusmin Energy" has already invested more than $35 million in oil field development in Imeretia. An oil well was drilled, from which 160-170 tons of oil have been mined daily since 1995.

Letter from State Board Commends Viken Hovsepian State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Delaine Eastin and State Board of Education President Reed Hastings, recently wrote a letter to the Glendale Unified School district Superintendent Jim Brown commending Viken Hovsepian, an award-winning instructional leader, for his valued participation in a statewide leadership effort that has broad ramifications for public education. The letter stated that with the professional advise of Hovsepian, the accomplishment of many important tasks that face the Curriculum Development and Supplemental Materials Commission (Curriculum Commission) in the development of standards-based curriculum, instruction, and accountability systems for California public schools, will be possible. Commissioner Hovsepian serves as the Chair of the Mathematics Subject Matter Committee, and is Vice-Chair of the Electronic Learning Resources Committee. He has been awarded the prestigious Jaime Escalante Mathematics Teaching Award, the Presidential Award in Mathematics & Science Teaching, and has been selected to the All USA 1st Team in Teaching Mathematics. The Curricular Commission advises the State Board of Education (SBE) in a variety of curricular areas, including the SBE's responsibility to adopt instructional materials for kindergarten through grade eight, prepare and adopt curriculum frameworks for kindergarten through grade twelve in eight subject areas, and develop important curriculum policies for the California public schools. At the same time, Commissioners are provided the opportunity to enhance their professional endeavors. The letter also noted some of the key aspects of Commissioner Hovsepian's tremendous work. Hovsepian is currently participating in the 2002 Reading/Language Arts/English Language Development Adoption that includes basic instructional materials programs and three types of stand alone programs to meet the needs of struggling readers and English learners. He is also near the completion of the final draft of the Science Framework to be presented to the SBE in September 2001, and the draft Health Framework Addendum also to be presented in September 2001. He also began the first phase of the submission of instructional materials for three follow-up adoptions in Science, History-Social Science, and Visual and Performing Arts, that to be completed summer 2002. Hovsepian has been an active member of the Los Angeles Armenian community for a number of years. He has served as the principal of Mesrobian Armenian School in Pico Rivera, California. He was Chair of the Board of Regents of the Western Prelacy Schools for two years, and a longtime member of various Armenian organizations. His most recent contribution to the community has been the inclusion of the Armenian Genocide in the curriculum framework for teaching Social Science/History throughout the State of California from Kindergarten through grade 12. Hovsepian worked with Professor Richard Hovannisian of UCLA in formulating an overview of the Genocide, to be taught by history and social studies teachers in every school district throughout the state. The curriculum framework sets the standards that must be adhered to by California public school teachers, and is mandated by the state.
