    Armenian Youth

Welcome, Des! quote:Originally posted by Des:However, 2nd or 3rd generation descendants of immigrants sometimes re-claim their ethnic identity, as they become curious of their origins that they know so little about. This is my situation, except that I grew up knowing quite a bit about being Armenian (or at least my grandparents' definiton of such.) My mom did somewhat rebel against being Armenian which must have led to my embracing it. I have a niece and nephew that are also anglo-Chinese. My Chinese sister-in-law is as American as you can be (most likely as a result of having VERY traditional immigrant parents), so the kids currently seem to have zero interest in their heritage. They are only teenagers, but I keep wondering at what point they will delve into their Chinese roots. I'm positive it's going to happen.
  2. I too, find the duduk sad. However, I've recently begun to find it "cleansing". I know, I know, that sounds fruity, but that's the only way I can decribe it. My grandfather's music was the kef-time sounds. Hence my love for it.

    A Puzzle

[WARNING: ANSWER TO THE LIGHT SWITCH QUESTION FOLLOWS] . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Turn Switch #1 on for a few minutes. Shut it off. Turn Switch #2 on and go into the room. Switch #1: The hot bulb that is off. Switch #2: The bulb that is currently on. Switch #3: The cold bulb that is off.
  6. Stabbed, shot, drawn & quartered, and then hung!
  7. Now, this one and Sermon II are more like it.
  8. quote:Originally posted by ara baliozian: I have made the painful discovery that demands for solutions and constructive criticism simply mean "Shut up!" Actually, it can mean the opposite. The doctor needs to tell me exactly how and why I'm sick; I can get medication from a pharmacist. Without some level of elaboration regarding my disease, I would either die or seek another physician. In either case, we are both worse off.
  9. quote:Originally posted by Gayane: I saw Hokis live; they can't behave properly, NOR can they sing. That automatically renders their "music" worthless to me. I'll give you part of that. I saw their song from the AMA and thought they sounded terrible. So I didn't go to any of their shows. I like the music though, forget the mouths in the front. Except for Dariner Antsni, I would like the songs just as much (maybe more!) if they were instrumentals.
  10. OK, from reading your posts, I get your idea. Now what?
  11. quote:Originally posted by Gayane: Now, let me say that I think that Hokis as an artistic endeavor is worthless. How can you not like Karune, Dariner Antsni, or Bare Aghjig??? Karune: a good attempt at modernizing an old song. You have to at least give them credit for trying on this one. Dariner Antsni: This is a good "slow jam" kind of song. I think this one is great. Bare Aghjig: The way they put the modern beat behind traditional instruments is great! A whole album that sounded like this song would never leave my CD player. Some of the songs on the CD are lame, but these three are good stuff. Something new in the very, very stale world of Armenian pop music. Mike Patron Of All Tastes: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

THINGS YOU’D LOVE TO SAY AT WORK, BUT CAN’T: 1. I can see your point, but I still think you’re full of s h i t. 2. I don’t know what your problem is, but I’ll bet it’s hard to pronounce. 3. How about never? Is never good for you? 4. I see you’ve set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public. 5. I’m really easy to get along with once you people learn to see it my way. 6. I’ll try being nicer if you’ll try being smarter. 7. I’m out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message.. 8. I don’t work here. I’m a consultant. 9. It sounds like English, but I can’t understand a word you’re saying. 10. Ahhh...I see the screw-up fairy has visited us again... 11. I like you. You remind me of when I was young and stupid. 12. You are validating my inherent mistrust of strangers. 13. I have plenty of talent and vision. I just don’t give a damn. 14. I’m already visualizing the duct tape over your mouth. 15. I will always cherish the initial misconceptions I had about you. 16. Thank you. We’re all refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view. 17. The fact that no one understands you doesn’t mean you’re an artist. 18. Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental. 19. What am I? Flypaper for freaks!? 20. I’m not being rude. You’re just insignificant. 21. It’s a thankless job, but I’ve got a lot of Karma to burn off. 22. Yes, I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial. 23. And your crybaby whiny-butt opinion would be...? 24. Do I look like a people person? 25. This isn’t an office. It’s Hell with fluorescent lighting. 26. I started out with nothing & still have most of it left. 27. Sarcasm is just one more service we offer. 28. If I throw a stick, will you leave? 29. Errors have been made. Others will be blamed. 30. Whatever kind of look you were going for, you missed. 31. I’m trying to imagine you with a personality. 32. A cubicle is just a padded cell without a door. 33. Can I trade this job for what’s behind door #1? 34. Too many freaks, not enough circuses. 35. Nice perfume. Must you marinate in it? 36. Chaos, panic, & disorder - my work here is done. 37. How do I set a laser printer to stun? 38. I thought I wanted a career, turns out I just wanted pay checks.

    A Puzzle

quote:Originally posted by MJ: how would you interpret the statement "One Corsican said all Corsicans ar liers?" So far, I'm with BTac here. If I'm up another couple of hours thinking about this, you owe me a beer (or a good glass of vino)! [a few minutes later....] OK, I'm back. He is lying. Not all Corsicans are liars, only some (he being one of the liars). [ March 14, 2001: Message edited by: Aghmug ]

    A Puzzle

C'mon Martin, that one isn't that easy...is it? E-mail me your answer (or at least the key part of the answer). Remember you can only go in the room once and you can't see in there at all otherwise. So you can't see what happens when you flip the switches unless you go into the room.

  17. quote:Originally posted by MJ: I guess my answer is that someone in real love with the Lord cannot demonstrate a bad behavior. Well put. I would only add that a true Christian would define "bad behavior" in the right way. Drink more, eat less bacon and saturated fats!
  18. quote:Originally posted by BTac: So if I was to invite a "true Christian" to dinner and offer him a glass of wine or beer with his meal, should they refuse in the name of the Lord? If they do not lust for alcohol, or more simply, abuse it, then it cannot be a sin. In fact, aren't there some studies that suggest one or two drinks a day is good for your health. The whole "Temple of Christ" argument against alcohol goes out the window. This is where Paul's Roman's verse would apply. Ten different people will have ten different attitudes about alcohol. I'm not saying you can pick and choose your sins, but clearly instances of Biblical "fuzziness" makes it a universal document that can withstand centuries and still be relevant.
  19. quote:Originally posted by BTac: It seems as if doing the right thing is not enough, but the right thing has to be done in the name of Jesus. Yes, I've had a lot of trouble understanding this. One who does good purely from the heart should be more favorably judged than one who does good in the name of Jesus into order to go to Heaven.
  20. quote:Originally posted by TigrannesIII: and Mike who's already admitted to us that he's not a believer telling us what a good Christian is.... great. You don't have to be a model, to recognize a model You'd be amazed at how some non-believers lead a "Christian Life" (my wife). Can't be that unbelievable since many "Christians" lead quite a secular life. BTW, just because I am a non-believer does not mean I do not believe everyone should lead a Christian lifestyle (are there enough negatives in this sentence! ). The world would be a much better place if everyone did. [ March 14, 2001: Message edited by: Aghmug ]

    A Puzzle

There are 3 switches in the off position that control 3 lights in another room. You may flip any switches you like, but you can only look/go in the room with the lights once. Can you determine which switch controls which light? If so, how?
  22. quote:Originally posted by armeniangirl83: So my question is:who is a real christian? Literally, it would be one who follows and tries to live by the teachings of Christ. Christ's message in the New Testament is "love." I would think in its simplest form, being a Christian just means living a life of love. Love for yourself, your family, friends, neighbors and most of all strangers.
  23. Here it is. Romans 14:14 from the New Standard Version: I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself; but it is unclean for any one who thinks it unclean.
  24. Many sins are self-defined. The Bible intentionally has such "grey areas" for each person to determine their own understanding. Doesn't Paul say somewhere in the New Testament: "If you think it is a sin, then for you it is a sin"? Obviously paraphrased. [ March 13, 2001: Message edited by: Aghmug ]
