gamavor
To me House Music is when I got in front of the piano, my friend Christo gets his acoustic guitar, my friend Lubo is on the bass and Michael on the drums. We usually have had a bunch of good-looking, back stage singers too:)

Proud EXPAT
House music, sure it's become dry and typical, but then again almost every style of music as well. Don't tell me hip hop has become creative (other than a few artists like Missy experimenting a little bit.) Early 90's techno from the UK, Canada and the Detroit area of USA were brilliant, but then again the majority of people especially in Armenia call any music made with synths techno. DM were awesome until they became a little dry over these past few years. Nevertheless I have hope they will kick some _ss again soon. Massive Attack has always been amazing. There's really not that much awesome music around. Creative with longevity, know what I mean? Thank God for System of a Down for showing a little big of creativity and depth in rock music. Not just saying it because they are Armos, but in all honesty. I don't listen to them, but I know they are amazing at what they do in their genre of music. Don't say house is boring, like I had said, that term doesn't say much these days since it's branched out so much.

Proud EXPAT
It didn't however it (the hip-hop) created a whole new wave of R&B like Ms. Dynamite, Beyonce (although the latest album is very bad) etc. style_images/master/snapback.png How did hip hop create Ms. Dynamite or Beyonce? They are neo soul R&b artists wouldn't you say? I shouldn't even get into my views on hip hop, where it started from and what useless things almost every commercial rapper has to say these days. In any case, categorizing music is stupid and restricts creativity if you ask me. Try to categorize Massive Attack, you really can't. And that is what makes them so interesting. Missy mixing experimental neo R&B with rap and even a house tune ("this is for my people") is brilliant and proves how talented she is. Plus I love it when black artists appreciate house music. After all they were the pioneers of house music. You just don't see too many black people into house anymore.

And also lot of neo R&B singers came to it through hip-hop.
nairi
I thought Massive Attack was trip-hop Well, Portishead is.

Proud EXPAT
I wonder guys, how can you listen to such narrow-minded bourgeois styles of music? style_images/master/snapback.png Who said that's all we listen to? Why don't you tell us some of your fave styles or groups? Ya I suppose Massive Attack can be labelled trip hop, but I think their mish-mash of many styles make them unique. BTW I think Massive Attack KICKS Portishead's butt! Edited October 8, 2004 by Proud EXPAT

Stormig
Am I the only one who knows nothing about out-house music? style_images/master/snapback.png I get the feeling a buncha Greeks have taken over the forum.
vava
Agreed on Massive Attack's uniqueness - from album to album, you witness evolution and a desire to develop... there's very little filler material on Massive Attacks albums (on the most part, that is). That brings me to a point I made in another thread a while ago - the album (or CD/DVD now) has gone the way of the dodo. It's extinct. The music industry has allowed itself to degenrate to 'track-based' artists and revenues. Entire CDs are sold by the millions on the popularity of one track. Some of the fault could of course, be attributed to video, but in any case... If this is the new paradigm, then the industry has to establish a new way of merchandising and marketing music/artists. It's become clear that the music buying public are simply not interested in an entire CD full of trash for one tune. Initiatives like Apple's Music store - where individual tunes sell for 99c are a welcome change. Let's hope that the industry will wake up - and instead of concentrating on pushing us the same old cookie-cutter ClearChannel garbage, and spending loads on anti-piracy, they should look into giving the public what they crave: good quality music, through convenient channels at accessible prices. nairi
I still think 99c is too much. Half the price and I'd be okay with it. Trouble is that I get sick of a lot of songs. There's a lot I just like to have at that moment because I'm into it, but I know I won't like it in a few months or years. I still buy CDs from artists I know for sure I'll like for a long time, if not forever. I do not regret buying Radiohead at all, for instance, but I would never buy Kosheen. I'm already sick of it. As for D&B, this is my stuff (get ready ): http://www.xs4all.nl/~nairi/Nitrous%20(%20...0&%20Trace).mp3 The equivalent in techno, and you have me dancing in a club I said on another forum that the best house is on vinyl and unless you're a DJ there's not much point in buying it. The few techno CDs that I have are a real disappointment to what you hear live mixed by a good DJ. Three Red Bulls and a joint and you can't stop me Although I enjoy it sober too.. nairi
No, I haven't. Never heard of it either.. I haven't been out for at least 4 years. I think the last time I went to a "rave" was 4 years ago at the Melkweg. In fact, I think it was a HQ party. The main room was techno. The second room was D&B. We were sitting in the D&B room most of the night. It was absolutely brilliant! Although by the end of the night we were happy to leave!!! Everything has its limits... DJ SINISTER
The "house music" that you hear on most radio shows worldwide (save NYC) is considered commercial, or even euro dance. Granted, the radio show that I am a part of here in Montreal plays only underground house and affiliated genres of music: brazilian, afro-latin, jazz, nu-jazz, motown, philly soul, gospel, disco... I've even played some duduk by Djivan Gasparyan on my radio show and in some of my mix CD's.... Real, proper house music is still very underground, so-to-speak. It is a gorgeous form of music. Uplifting, musical, and inspirational..........house music is a bridge to my inner depths. House music actually allowed me to discover the beauty in other forms of music, including armenian folk and duduk. House is so musical, and is heavily influenced by so many other genres of music, that REAL house in itself can be considered as world music... If you can feel it the way I do, then you have been blessed by God. If you don't, then it just means that you have been blessed by another form of music, or art, or anything else for that matter. I respect everyone's passions in life. As long as you're "feeling" something, then you're good. God bless.
gurgen
You're right, commercial house is crap most of the time. In fact, I can describe the standard radio techno/trance/house hit: - woman with high voice starts singing stupid lyric - kiddie beat kicks in - kiddie beat speeds up with a minor bass (minor or else all 16-year old high school girls will get a headache) - repeat until sick of it I say listen to hardcore
