Accelerated Posted October 5, 2004 Report Share Posted October 5, 2004 ....with my CD stacker busted in the car I been listening to the radio latelly and have noticed that the mainstream channels play a lot more house music than say a couple years back. I think in the not too distant future house is going to take over 'Pop' as the most popular genre and instead of having Britney and co in the mags it is going to be the most popular DJs that are going to be idolised etc. Its a pretty broad genre, but if your interested should give THISa try, I think we're going to be hearing it a lot more on the radio. I always found it a form of 'non-music' in the sense that the actual musical content (apart from the rhythms) is quite sparse. Nevertheless... Accelerated Posted October 6, 2004 Author Report Share Posted October 6, 2004 nairi, the music at the party site is a bit too trancy 'hi-nrg' for my liking, but yeah I think high frequency breakbeat is my favourite type of 'house' music, as long as the beat isnt too weird and mainstream house like 'Rocking Music' (solveig) and 'Push Up' (freestylers) is also too good ....lets rock! Jungle, I think, they used to call it here. (?) I was never really up to date on all th terms and sub-genres. Personally I'd rather listen to dub, and as far as dancing goes, I hardly ever go to dance clubs anymore... and as far as Hi-NRG, well I just can't stand it. However, I can’t listen to it often, for listening I prefer chillout and D&B. The one I really enjoy is the D&B version of “Addicted to Bass.” I don’t think I am familiar with Jungle. And vavachka, what’s a dub? Currently I am in the 80's phase when it comes to dancing, the last few times my friends have been frequenting the Culture Club in NY, very good 80's music but certain DJs do a very crappy job at mixing, but that is expected from every place. What the heck is that? Banging on a pot with a spoon is music to me. As far as mainstream goes, USA is way too hip hop based to ever accept house music on daytime radio. Canada has been playing house music on daytime radio for the past 10+ years. The UK are pioneers at playing it on radio, they've been doing it for ages. House music has branched out to over 20+ subcategories, so being a little more specific helps. As fare as Hi-NRG goes, it's perfect for aerobics. Only I guess its a little problem to have it on a move in a car (not impossible in Japan thought- they have high-speed WAP everywhere)... I've been a listener for years now (except when the RIAA took them off the air ) They also have a good mix of Indie music amongst their channels. Expat, I agree that just about any form of noise can qualify as music. If you've spent any time going to places like the Knitting Factory, listening to the likes of John Zorn, Fred Frithe, etc. any collection of noises/sounds can be considered music. The difference, I think, is that house music ha become very standard - there's not much innovation in house, and there hasn't been in a long while. There are many sub-genres, yes, and that provides a certain variety, but on the whole, house tends to sound well, pretty much the same... It's a type of 're-mixed' reggae with lots of bass and reverb essentially. It dates from the 70's, but has seen over the past few years a sort of short lived re-birth. although I hardly think it's 'hip' anymore. I like it though. Look for artists like the Mad Professor, Prince Jammy, Scientist, etc. Often they'll take an old reggae mainstays like Yellowmanor Gregory Isaacs, and re-mix/master his tunes in a dub style. The best place to listen to it is in a club mixed by a good DJ. Once in a zillion I might put something on at home, but I enjoy it most in a club. Hey Accel, I wasn't too impressed by the soundtrack on that site either (though I didn't think it was all too bad). I loved Carl Cox when I saw him live. Tom Harding and that sort of stuff. Nevertheless there are tracks that stand out, and SomaFM plays a lot of them on Beatblender and Secret Agent.
