Anileve
I am a hopelessly disorganized person. I am always late everywhere, I seriously believe it’s a chronic illness. My boss is so used to me being late that she calls me in the office to find out if I would like to change my hours so that I won’t be late, this is still after 4 years of me working here. My friends are extremely shocked when I show up only 10 minutes late. I only work with deadlines, I wait until the last possible moment and then in highly panicky state I overclock my engine. I usually don’t pay my bills on time, thank God for this online banking where I set up an automatic schedule. If I have to pay by mail I usually spend the rest of the week flirting with customer service reps to knock off the late fees. I have 2 alarm clocks at home, and I still can’t wake up. One is a good distance away from my bed, but I miraculously manage to get up, walk over and turn it off and then go back to sleep, that can repeat for 1 hour, until I realize that I have 10 minutes to get ready. By the way it’s got different sounds with birds and waterfalls, and gives out the aroma and lights up, but that is still ineffective. My boyfriends used to show up with food to pick me up, so by the time they finish their dinner I will finally come downstairs. Some friends would tell me the wrong time so that that I would actually show up on time. In high school I basically buried my entire family, because every day I was either late or out (my English class) since I was at a funeral or in the hospital. My teacher would just approach me with “So Ev which one of your relatives passed away yesterday?” However, I am highly productive and can accomplish anything within a matter of a very short time, but I get really stressed out and at the end I am completely drained. Let’s just say that the root of my problem is the fact that I was born late. I was expected on the 28 and decided to grace everyone with my presence on the 31. I know that I can accomplish so much more if I was more disciplined, I know that the sky is the limit when it comes to my ability and persistence; however this problem has always been a gigantic and damaging obstacle for me. So now that you know the seriousness of my situation, does anyone have tips on how to be more disciplined and organized? I am out of ideas. Azat
I am somewhat like you nowadays when it comes to bills and such, but showing up on time is one of the things that I make sure that I do. I think it is disrespectful to people not to show up on time. I have given up calling the service reps at the credit card company or the mortgage company as I have done it many times and they already know that I really did not send it a few days in advance and that it was not the post office that delayed it. However when I was young I use to be super organized(and am somewhat like that at work today). I use to finish term papers weeks(3-4-5) before they were do and would sit on them till the last minute to turn them in. I was NEVER late on bills and such. would pay them when I got them. About being to work on time. I think it is a sign that the person does not enjoy their work if they do not make the effort to show up on time. You may think about looking for another job. Other than that I always put my appointments on Outlook and put an alarm in advance. as low as 30 minutes to as much as few days depending on the event. It definitely helps me keep organized. I also check my PDA calendar last thing before walking out the door in the mornings to have a good idea where I have to be and what time that given day. Hmm.... style_images/master/snapback.png PLEASE PLEASE, CAN WE SWITCH?! http://elouai.com/images/yahoo/51.gif So am I just to use that excuse everywhere I go? "I am artistically late due to my highly eccentric nature." If I use the line I wonder which bank will I be working in, you know opening doors for people for some change. I don't know how to make myself wake up earlier. I don't sleep, I hibernate. One day I went to sleep at 6am and woke up at 8pm, the whole day passed me up. It's pretty scary when you go to sleep when it's dark outside and you wake up 14 hours later and it's still dark. Some of the guys I dated were also not morning people, so because I liked to sleep late we would always end up sleeping until late noon and being late together. It was a disaster! Winston, maybe you are right. I am terrified of routines, I would like to have one but I am afraid I would get bored. I need spice in my life otherwise I feel no different than a machine. Fadyush, you don't seem to mind... I gotta admit it's fun to bum around sometimes, and tell the world to screw itself because like the Blue Eyes said "I do it my way!" But there is always a price to pay, and I feel like claiming Chapter 11 when that price shows it's ugly face. Perhaps I don't really enjoy my work as much. But how would you explain the fact that I am late in everything? I really care about my friends and family and special events. The problem is that I always feel like I have more time than I actually have. I tried changing the time on all of my clocks to fool myself, but my other self always knew the real time and I still played with pushing the time limits. My alarm is set 30 minutes ahead, it doesn't work. My mother often jokes that if I was to go to the army, they would pay me just so that I could leave, or they would adjust to my regime. But there is not a soul in the world that could ever change me. My calendar? Ha! I don't even remember to look at it. And lately I started forgetting my friends birthdays, even though I care. What the hell is wrong with me??!!! Should I convert to some religion or something?
DominO123
You can try to be a little bit more organised, but extremly more and you'll lose your ability and persistence... because those were the product of your adaptation to compensate your desorganised nature. Sip
I'd say you have stopped caring about things. You have to find a reason to care. You have to start to find some sort of joy in what you do on a daily basis. Otherwise, this is slowly going to lead to you essentially dissosiating yourself from reality and going into the "don't care" mode of life. Sure you'll still get by but is it really how you want to live? I think we all go through those kinds of stages at some point or another and in various forms. The danger is not to get too used to it and get out of it quickly. I have been suffering from a similar nonchalant zombie like state of existence for the past few years but in the last couple of months, I have been making several changes to help me get back to a more "driven" state. For one thing, I again have started to find joy in what I do. Also a BIG part of all of this is simple procrastination. It is just deeply embedded in the human psyche to procrastinate Once you are aware of it, and once you really get sick and tired of it and yourself, two things can happen: 1. You will spiral down lower into the missery or 2. You'll snap out of it and try to break the addiction (yes, it is an addiction). So which will it be for you? After a while, it just becomes part of you. Some people who become alcoholics for example are able to defeat it and go back to normal. It stays with them for a long time and maybe forever but some do over come it ... then there are others that simply can't. Sepeahn, this has nothing to do with laziness, it's another thing... when doing something at the last minute, I work for hours and do what it would take 3 times more times for others... so certainly I can work on something and more so than the majority of people... it is just that my time is more concentrated at the last minute. It takes a lot of time to boot my system.
Sip
It has everything to do with lazyness! nairi
I was NEVER late on bills and such. would pay them when I got them.style_images/master/snapback.png I became like that since I got a fine.. I don't rest until I know that bill has been paid. As for waking up early: I manage somehow, but then my day doesn't start before 9am. Plus I often take a nap around 5-6pm. But yeah, in the winter, any time before 9am is torture. I'm so glad I'm not in high school anymore!!! As for being organized: I try to the extent that I can. Important dates and regular schedules I remember. Other things I have to write down or make a sticky and put it where I sit regularly I am on time with the things that I find interesting or know are important and I proscrastinate on the rest. At home, I'm a mess. Every few weeks I have to force myself to do some cleaning. Funny thing is, that once I start, I actually enjoy it. It's the fear of consequences which gets my butt moving, and the fact that I know my ability to always come through at the end. I do think that Sip is right. It is laziness somewhat. I always feel like I still have time so why not relax and enjoy it for now. Usually I end up really worn out and stressed because of that tactic. Do you think that organization and routine go hand in hand? Routines spring due to superb organizational skills, am I wrong?

Now you come along and say what I been thinking all along. style_images/master/snapback.png Vay!! I am such a mess, I am not a marriage material. As I said before I think I would like a routine or two but I get terrified when I sink into a pattern. I also think that highly organized people suck in bed. I've been with both extremes. The severely laid back guy used to take everything easy like me, in the end we really never accomplished anything. Although I admit it was often a lot of fun. The other extreme was absolutely aggravating. Although he would plan everything out with us, he hardly could enjoy the idle time, and was always antsy. I liked to roll around in bed, have late breakfast, watch tons of movies and eat. Some people find it to be a wasted day. Also I am very happy with the instability of my life, maybe that's the reason it's so hard to break away. I like when things go unexpected, when I have no control and I embrace a new experience which emerges. Plus there are tons of memories of instances where my lack of organization turned into the best time. I think it’s terribly dull to be too organized, too stable and too ritualistic, you don’t allow your creativity to embody you. Sure your life goes according to your plans most of the time, but where is the spice in that?
