ED Posted August 17, 2004 Report Share Posted August 17, 2004 Its a duty of every citizen to attend, there is even a jail time for not responding, stupid if you ask me, not being a juror but the laws that covers juror when one has to go, government pays 5$ a day and employer doesn’t have to pay for ones absence, that’s why you see majority of jurors being minorities and anemployed, black mostly, in 25 years I must of received 100 or more duty calls, never went and never responded. All we did was sit in a large auditorium and waited for our names to be called. Don't get me wrong, it's not so bad if you get paid for attanding (some employers pay you for jury duty) but I didn't. The trail was about this huge accident on the freeway and the judge said it would take a least two weeks!!! It's a good thing I got dismissed by the other lawyer because I told them my cosine was in a smilier accident, and his son died from it. edo: Are you sure you could get jail time for not responding??? If so, then how come you never did? And if you never did, then how do you know what the majority of jurors look like? When I went about 3 years ago, must have them where white with great jobs. Sip Posted August 18, 2004 Report Share Posted August 18, 2004 (edited) Amy do NOT mess with these people ... it's very serious and you could get in a lot of trouble. You can call and postpone a couple of times without any trouble usually. To postpone more, it gets harder. If you are in school, you can postpone during the school year to a holiday or break .. so if you postpone now for a couple of months and then you have school, you can postpone more. The other main excuse is unusual financial hardship: as in when an employer doesn't pay for jury duty. There are a few legit ways to get out of it which is listed on the form but it's not as easy anymore. The good thing is, now it's a lot better than it used to be before. You don't have to show up many times. So there is a week where you are assigned the jurry duty. Each day you have to call and check on this automated phone thing if you actually have to show up to court. If you do, then the next day you have to go but if not, you are done for that day. For me, I called every day of the week I was assigned and I didn't have to go. Hey juggy, would you like to attend jury duty for me? hehe, I think we have a different system to the one you guys have - I got a letter the other day saying that i was on a some sort of 'jury roll' for a certain period of time, so I guess I could be called up any time.
