IHS in this context stands for In.Hoc.Signo – By This Sign (my Latin is not that strong but I do wonder why it is not Per Hoc Signo – as in Per Lucem Ad Crucem or whatever), which can also be IHSV as shown in one of the URL’s Accel posted – In.Hoc.Signo.Vince – by this sign conquer. Constantine sees this in a dream, where it is written beneath the cross according to some of those sources, though I think in truth it was the chi and the rho (XP)... Constantine is in Britain at the time of his father’s death, is proclaimed emperor in York (then Eboracum) and remains there on his post for a few more years until he can take no more the disputing of his title and walks into Rome where he puts the chi and the rho on his soldiers’ armour and stuff to meet his opponent at Ponte Milvio, the Milvian Bridge, where nearby there is a flea market today if memory serves. Constantine is famous for having proclaimed Christianity his state religion and moving his capital to Constantinople (formerly Byzantium). I don’t know the exact history of the statue, but it is located near the entrance on the western façade of the York Minster, which is a medieval structure succeeding a Norman church and a Saxon one before that. It is possible to see the foundations and walls of its predecessors in the Undercroft. The church has required reinforcement due to stability concerns – you actually see the bolts driven into the columns when visiting the Undercroft. One peculiar thing about York is that names that end in –gate (as in Monkgate) mean Monk Street, whereas Monkbar means Monk’s gate. This is due to Viking influence – I understand that today in Norwegian, “street” is “gata.” If you are interested in Vikings, visit the Jorvik Centre (“Jorvik,” pronounced “your-vick,” is the Viking name for this town). York is a special place in that it retains its own texture well compared to most other cities – all thanks to a certain William Etty who campaigned for the preservation of this texture – you can look him up if you like. Thank you. OK – onto my next one. I don’t know how this one is going to fare, either. Let’s just say that people who have been there or are planning to go there will make no mistake about it – therefore – I plead that these people shut up and not even mention that they’ve been or are planning in being there so that we can tell if someone knows it out of their own merit. !!! Probably the same thing operates in the other canal, so people sail to the dock in the other canal, walk over the bridge to the this side, take the elevator to go down to the dock and take the boat. Stormig Posted July 26, 2004 Report Share Posted July 26, 2004 Yes, Sasun, it is a rotating boat lift linking two canals which had used to be accessible through traditional lock gates like they do in the Panama Canal, I think. I suppose simply just joining them is impossible due to topography between the two canals (same issue with the Panama isthmus). Canals are separate because they are but still quite close, regardless.
