_Anka_
Have any of you been sick and tired of studying and the whole process of going to school? Don't get me wrong, I love to learn and I'm very curious person but I have such a difficulty concentrating on school. I used to get good grades when I first started college (community) but something happen to me (don't know what) and I just can't do as good as I did before regarding my grades. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with becoming lazy or just loosing interest in the whole process. I don't want to sound like one of those people who dont' give a damn about goign to school or accomplishing anything in their lives because that's not the case here. I'm a Political Science major and I used to get straight A's in all of my poli sci classes befroe, but the alst three Poli sci classes that i took I got an F, B, C. I guess I shouldn't be complaining about the B, but I don't know what the hell happened to me with the toher grades.... I'll be retaking the class in which I got an F (hoping to get a B or an A). I really don't wnat to bore you guys with my school problems but I wanted to know if any of you had this experience before? I really don't understand why I started doing bad in school but I guess my brain is occupied with others things. At the same time I fell that i could do much better because I have brains, but part of me is holding me back from that...Also, I can't concentrate most of the time because after reading 3 pages the most I feel bored, distracted by other thoughts, I start remembring things, people, my past. While reading I always either wnat to turn on my comp to surf the net or turn on the TV and see what movie is on or what's happening around the world. I feel like while I'm studying the world is going by and I'm missing on a lot. I know this sound weird and probably crazy lol, but I don't know what happened to me , really. Also, I dont' knwo if it's an age thing or what it is but I've became so confused (I'm 21 years old) about my life, what I want to do, my role in this world, what is going to happen to me If I suck in school and If I'll ever look back and say that i waisted so much time on nonesense. I think that the lose of interest in studying is because of the confusion that I'm going through right now... Anyways, have you guys experienced this or what some of you older members think is happening to me? lol I really need help and if I wasn't clear about what is that things that I'm going through it's because I , myself have no idea what it is because I think that If I did know what is bothering me at this point in my life I would find a way to either fix it or understand the reason why it is happening (reason). But I don't even know what it is and I probably sound confising right now ... I guess there's alot oing on in my head which are preventing me from concentrating and taking care of the things that aer most important for me right now... Few hours ago I got pulled over by a Cop and the worst thing is that I had 3 martinis about an hour before that and I was drunk, but managed to stand straight in front of the cop, but baxts berets I didn't get arrested and taken to jail at 2am baxts ahavor berets and then when I got home I checked my gardes online and I saw that i got a C in my poli sci class, (the easiest class I ever took) which really made me angry. Any thought about how F***** up I am at this point ? I don't even know why I decided to write all this at this hour... again, anyone went through a confusion about their life, identity (not ethnic identity but as an individual)???? I'm the most unresponsible person you can ever meet in your life ( I hardly sat in my classes this semester and I'm always late for work) ...scary.... _Anka_
Also, I think that the only thing that would interest me, make me happy, and get my mind off things is if I traveled to India, Nepal, and Tibet for few months, but my parents won't let me go
Accelerated
I was pretty much in the same boat past couple years, but I think Im getting back on track - I dont know if anything has changed, just that Im tired of getting told off by my boss and hearing about my peers graduating soon and carreer success stories, while I am still bumming around. My new years resolution was to manage my time more efficiently, make the most of it etc. - it has made a difference.
_Anka_
resolution? lol I can't even plan things because I don't follow them most of the time... So you're saying that what I'm going through is normal? lol Could it be that what I'm going through right now ahs to do with me being the only child? One thing that forgot to mention is that there's a fear of something that's bothering me. I think that is has to do with failure or fear of the future or I dont' know what........ I'm so lost and for some kind of a reason I find it funny how I'm trying to describe things that I don't even know what they are Edited May 29, 2004 by _Anka_
Accelerated
well, you do the best you can - cant change yourself overnight, just have to work on it - I still watch TV and aimlessly surf the web a fair bit instead of working more on my assignments and ensuring I get a better mark, but I also no longer leave them untill the day before and keep up with the weekly workload etc. Cant say I have a fear of 'not being successful' or such but I have started thinking about my carreer direction lately - not out of fear, just like yourself I dont have a clear idea of what I want to be doing... and btw. Im also a pampered only child
Stormig
I was just about to say you should take time off when I read you couldn't make it to Nepal. I'm taking time off - kind of - next spring after I've defended my dissertation - except I hope to have a temporary job then (and also the fall preceding it). Will be still stuck in the same city but would have a window to a whole new world for a bit. And then goodness knows what. I am/was lucky I am in engineering and chose to branch out in an easy/non-numerical/non-analytical and enjoyable route - whereas I'm sure in Poli Sci it wouldn't make a difference if you were the "ultimate survivor" or not, you'd have to keep bending that knee all the time. My similar problems weren't just reading/studying, but listening to a fkn lecture, for goodness' sake. Knowing this, I am going to have to take into account a few things about career/Ph.D. choices. Like you, I like learning, and research rules. Just don't ask me to sit an exam or study for it.
Anoushik
...Also, I can't concentrate most of the time because after reading 3 pages the most I feel bored, distracted by other thoughts, I start remembring things, people, my past. While reading I always either wnat to turn on my comp to surf the net or turn on the TV and see what movie is on or what's happening around the world. I feel like while I'm studying the world is going by and I'm missing on a lot. This same thing happens to me, except instead of studying most of the time I'm supposed to practice the piano. My major is piano performance and I should at least practice four hours daily. But like you I can't concentrate and walk away from the piano after only an hour, and then I have to pay for it during juries and recitals. I really hope I can get a bit more organized and serious next semester. And also I thought I was the only one who felt that the world was going by and I was missing a lot. It feels good to know that there are other students with similar problems.
koko
Be glad you can study, and work! Not everyone has the chance to do so. once in a while you have to do soemthing else, for variation, besides studying its a must for our mind and soul, And to be able to contiune studying, youll do a better job if you take that little paus from work/study. _Anka_
thanks eveyone. I'm glad that its a common thing for many people because I felt like it had a problem or something. It's all part of stressing out I guess. anoushik, I went to a music school for about 6 years of my life when I was very young and couldn't stand sitting in front of the piano for an hour (the most ) while most of my friends played outside. Harut
Anka i think it has to do with age. i'm 21 myself and reading your first post i had the feeling you are describing me (execpt i manage to keep up my 4.0 gpa and am graduating in 2 weeks). but don't get discouraged... there IS an end to that. (i think i'm very close to it). one solution to easing the situation is finding a hobby or something that could temporaly take your mind off of your school work (but NO drugs). when you are temporaly away from schoolwork, you kind of miss it and want to go back do it. but the important thing is that whatever you choose to do should not waste much of your energy. and it should be of a value to you, which, hopefully, you can associate with your field of study or career over time. that way you will be away from school work, but still not too away from your goals in studying. that is why going out on friday nights and getting wasted and clubing all weekend long does NOT help. yes, it is a great way to temporaly forget about school work, but it waste too much of your energy and doesn't relate to your goals (unless you want to become a barwoman, a dj, or a stipper). another good way of getting out of this situation is finding others that are in the same situation and actually taking with them about it face to face. (out of personal experience, i would say that talking about it over the internet and face to face with others is NOT the same). that way, if you have no idea what to do, you can help each other, find common interests to spend some time on, or plain counseling each other. and be assured that there are a LOT of young people that are in the same situation... as you can see from just this thread. ok, i'll stop my nonesense philosophy here. but there is some truth to what i said above. angel4hope
i totally agree with harut on this one- one thing that gets my mond off schoolwork and also helps me in the longrun is spending time with lil kids- and also running or driving- oh and running outdoors is sooo soothing- it will surely get your mind off of things and give you more endorhipns- which make u feel happy- a natural high- and also help you concentrate- i also find spending time with friends or people with mutual interests very helpful -ive really realized how precious the times that we spend with friends are- when u go to school u barely get 2 se any of them- in my case- and trust me ull be more appreciative- i know- i can be such a nerd and do nothing but study for a straight week- but then my brain gets drained from all the social ties and encounters that help ease stress and bring laughs- anywhoo- also yoga helps me alott- to get rid of stress and to just calm down.... reading is another good method- but i doubt u wanna do that after studying alott- ure eyes burn...lol  yah so dont stress ureslf 2 much or else ull end up with an ulcer like me... take things slow and make sure u get alot of rest and some breaks in between studying-- take care
Accelerated
my 4.0 gpa I dont understand the US college scoring system, is that 4 out of a maximum of 5gpa? ...and whats with people stressing these days, I never get 'stressed-out' even when things are going really bad and I probably should be - I guess its my easy-going nature and the Aussie climate
Stormig
No, that's a 4.00/4.00, a.k.a. a nerd. I believe in the point of diminishing return, but then you gotta respect people's choices. Regardless, bravo, Harutik jan - I'm sure it must be great success.
Azat
(execpt i manage to keep up my 4.0 gpa and am graduating in 2 weeks). Show off. Looser. Geek. I was able to keep my GPA at 0.
gevo27
Anka i feel exactly the same way as you do, i dropped a class last semester because i didnt feel like studying for it, go a W on my record, but hopefully since i took it this semester it will be cleared. Like you i have lost patients in studying, and my major is Mechanical ENgineering, it is redidculously hard, and even at 2-3 hours of studying and reading a day it is not enough, the classes move to quick, The first year of college was easy i maintained a 3.89 gpa, but starting the 4th semester (which is when my core engineering classes began) i was hit with toooo much work, 18 units which 3 were labs, averaging 27 hours of classtime a week.. YUUCCK!!!! lol.. and my GPA hopefully will be atleast a 3.2-3.5 (depends on how badly i messed up my math final) ... lol.. i just cant study anymore.. so.. i guess this is good thing for me too, cause iv been wondering about it myself like you have, u know, "is this normal" lol.. im glad to hear this type of response.. even releived.. hehe.. ok.. now,, let me widh s all luck.. and wonderful hours and horus of studying ... haha.. buyt im on summer break for 3 months!!! HAHAHAHA... yaaayyyy... i hope by the end of summer im enthusiastic about going back to another semester of 18 units ... sucks!!!!.. hehe... and Harut, one question please if you dont mind, do you work and keep 4.0gpa? THOTH
i manage to keep up my 4.0 gpa ... ...but NO drugs... ..no wonder your nuts!  ...when you are temporaly away from schoolwork, you kind of miss it and want to go back do it... confirmed... but the important thing is that whatever you choose to do should not waste much of your energy. and it should be of a value to you, which, hopefully, you can associate with your field of study or career over time. that way you will be away from school work, but still not too away from your goals in studying. Seriously now - while good advice in a sense...you know - one only lives once. When I was your age (and younger) I worked my A off....essentially graduating (each in 3 years) high school (or at least dropping out..but yes graduating just the same) and college - with 2 majors, a 3.5+ GPA, while I worked two and sometimes 3 jobs (one being - for a time a 40 hr day job while I took 12 Hrs credit at night!...and I worked weekends - double shift on Sunday - etc etc)....and ya know...if I had it to do different...well maybe I wouldn't have been in such a hurry...so manic about it..instead I think I would have goofed off more - done stuff for myself - my own fun & interest...regardless if it had any career, educational or financial bearing....SO I say go out and see the world - do something fun - get drunk and party sometimes without care - all of that...always (plenty of) time for serious stuff...and in the end you may just have less regrets and you may just find a way to live longer.... Azat
Im sorry people, all i can think of reading through this is "BS" and "BS".... Why is that Gevo? I worked all through University as well. the first couple of years part time but the last couple almost full time 30-35 hours a week. I worked full time for graduate school. Why did you think it is not possible?
DominO123
And that's probably why your GPA was at 0.4. <_< Weird are those in the South, for they can pass with a GPA of 0.4. No wonder Bush passed college.
angel4hope
yah i never had a perfect 4.0 gpa - there was alwyas that one stupid art class or PE class that i got a b in that kep me from having 4.0- but at UCI my grades are way better than that from high school- i think that ibn college- since you get to choose most of the classes that since you enjoy them you tend to do better.... i duno- i still havent maintained a 4.0 gpa yet- but im planning on doing so-- id like to know that im not always at top- that i still have somewhere to go from my present situation-- but it wouldnt kill me to graduate cumme laude or semi cumme laude from a 4yr university ... but to those with 4.0 gpa's - kudos to you all... nairi
4.0 gpa isn't that hard when 1+1=2 and not potentially 2.5 or 8. Lib arts is really bad from that perspective. It's very subjective. If you're lucky and you have a professor that likes you, you'll get high grades even when you don't deserve them and vice versa if you have a teacher that doesn't like you. Even the most logical classes like linguistics are an impossibility to get a clean 10/10. They'll always throw in something to avoid giving you a 10. 9.8 sure, but 10, never.
angel4hope
totally agree- esp classes like philosophy and other social science classes-- its almost impossible to get a 100 percent- depending on te professor- - and also bio classes are one of the hardest at our school- their tests are sooo tricky-- as are the O.chem and Biochem classes...but im sure ill survive through them just not with a 4.0 straight
Sip
Why is that Gevo? I worked all through University as well. the first couple of years part time but the last couple almost full time 30-35 hours a week. I worked full time for graduate school. Why did you think it is not possible? I started working after the second half of my freshman year but not that much (mostly cash gigs on weekends). I didn't really start working till my second year. After 3rd year I had 20-30 hour a week jobs during the school year and full time summers and by masters time I was working 2 jobs at a time. However, once Ph.D. rolled around, I just didn't have any time to work although I was being paid as a graduate student researcher by my adivsor which was enough to get by. Since I was staying at home the whole time, I didn't have to worry about rent so that was a HUUUUUGE help ----> and that's how I had the cash to get into offroading which helped a lot in keeping me sane. The first couple of years going to UCLA I would take a bus for 6 hours (including bus stop waits)!!! 1 hour from home to a mid point. Then change bus and go to UCLA. Then a bus from UCLA to work in santa monica. Then reverse the process to get back home.
THOTH
Im sorry people, all i can think of reading through this is "BS" and "BS".... Well believe what you like...but it did help that I began taking college courses at age 14 (Johns Hopkins) and (thus) graduated (college) at age 19...which is why - at 43 I'm set to (fully) retire in about 7 years...so perhaps all the hard work will have paid off..eh? (in addition to the fact that I've been earning a decent income for a bit of time...)...still wish I would have goofed off more..
