_Anka_
4.0 gpa isn't that hard when 1+1=2 and not potentially 2.5 or 8. Lib arts is really bad from that perspective. It's very subjective. If you're lucky and you have a professor that likes you, you'll get high grades even when you don't deserve them and vice versa if you have a teacher that doesn't like you. Even the most logical classes like linguistics are an impossibility to get a clean 10/10. They'll always throw in something to avoid giving you a 10. 9.8 sure, but 10, never. I had a great teacher in college who was in his mid or late 70's. He was probably the most favorite teacher of mine. I had him for French 4, Micro and Macro Economics. I got an A in his French 4 class, Got a B in Macro Economics, but since i didn't open up my book throughout the whole semester in his Micro economics class I got F's on the midterm and the final , but since he liked me a lot and I had him for different classes I got a B in my Micro economics. THOTH
Yeah Sip I hear ya...though I've been working since age 13...cut lawns (which expanded into a full care yard service with a gardening speciality), then I (also) babysat - nights mostly (yeah me! ), worked at various restaraunts (mainly washing dishes..and when not doing that running numbers! ...and drinking - of course!)...then professional (suit) work (began while at school - cooperative education...a great program...like an intership - but paid! that I highly recommend for anyone contemplating any particualr or various career paths).. And yeah - I moved out of the house pretty much as soon as I got my car when I was 17..but then rent was easy ($120/month) in an off campus town home I shared with soem buds...and for food...I had my ways - either the restaraunt took care of me...or we found bars with happy hours! ...yes - it was during this period where (an attempt was made) to recruit me as a gigilo (really) ...having to do with one of the bars we frequented with needy (rich/older) female clientele...well I was into older gals at the time...but it just wasn't my cup of tea...and I already had too many jobs going... So what are you saying Gevo - Armenians don't know how to work hard...maybe your spending too much time on your bike eh? (good for you...)...and 4.0 GPA...sure congrats..but in the scheme of things...there are other things to be concerned about..but yeah - competing for scholarships...getting into the right grad school etc - understood... And Nairi - while I understand the dilema with social-sci (been there-done that...) ya got to learn to schmooze a bit eh? ...though there are always some profs that are tough nuts to crack... ..ANd course like bhio - or any of the entry level course - well they are designed to weed out folks - simply as that..and they use any trick in the book to make sure you got what it takes..brutal sometime (man do i have some stories...) - like the Pakistani Calculus prof who would face the board - and talk over his shoulder with his accent...- while writing with his right hand while simultaniously erasing with his left...you coulnd't see what he was writing half the time, coulnd't ever understand him well (he actually needed interpreters to communicate with his Taiwanese teaching assistants...)...and when anyone asked him a question he woulnd't answer - instead he would scream that you obviously wern't listenting to what he'd been saying...(getting any ideas Sip?...you'll perhaps need to affect the accent...)...anyway one of only 2 classes I think where I got a "C" - couldn't really be helped really...(and nothing to be ashamed of...) THOTH
Sounds like a small school Anka..French & Economics..same prof! Reminds me of an Economics course I took - "Theory of the Leiesure Class" - based on the writings of Thorstein Veblin (If you don't know him you should look him up - brilliant guy...in his lax sort of way... ..sorry i probably spelled his name wrong...)..anyway I worte this paper making the case for why the dishwashing job that I had at the time was likely the best job I would ever have in my lfe...it had to do with being able to drink (as much as I wanted) on the job (a privelege normally reserved for only the Greeks...and extended to me..being Armenian)..sleep (or study - bleh!) when things got slow...they fed me...for the whole week really - sent me home with tons of great food), I was entertained - by the Greeks and by all the others (personalities) in the restaraunt, by sports on TV (which we gambled on heavily) - always on - etc etc etc ...got an "A" BTW! ...and all not bad for being 16-17! nairi
Not sure what schmooze means... As for paid working, I'm not I never worked that much for money anyway (maybe four or five summer jobs). But I've volunteered ever since I can remember. Even now. As for going out and partying... I think I did my share of that and I'm tasting the fruits now: I'm wayyyy behind everyone else. Somewhere I don't care though. At least I went out and I had fun when I wanted to. Now I want to study and I'm doing it.

But yeah - don't worry at all where others are "at" - it makes no difference - its your life...live it according to your own rules & expectations...I think your doing well... At only 19 i have worked a significant amount throughout my life.. iv been working with my dad (yes i was seriously actually working) since age 10.. his clients would get baffled when my dad asked me to do something at that young age... and during the first 3 semesters of college i maintained the same job (official now) with my dad, infact i made little over 16 bucks and hour, and worked nearly 40 hours a week, plus saturdays AND sundays!!!.. i didnt take a loan or get any tuition assistance from anyone, i was able to buy my own car (with some help) pay for everything i own and school... when the 4th semeseter came i quit to much responsibility and stress... i would drive 25-25k miles a month.. i got sick of it.. and now (infact today was the first day) i got a job with RadioShack... youv got questions we've got answers haha So Azat jan, if anyone knows it can be done its me.. infact one 2 week period my dad was sick and it was during midterms.. AND i HAD!! to take care of everything.. to make it short ill jsut say, i put over 4000miles on my truck in 2 weeks.. all in LA no long distance travel!!!... THOT,,, the bike (as Sip said for him was his offroading) is what has kept me sane...
