do you think there is any difference between sacrificing the present for the future and sacrificing the future for the present?

which one do you prefer and why? what about in global scale? should we qua human sacrifice our present for the future or vis versa?

I think in the end everything comes down to sacrificing for the future, whether you sacrifice today or not. In emergency situations, you may sacrifice the future to save the day, but that doesn't mean you won't have any future. I just means it might not be of the quality you had intended it to be, but oh well, crap happens, and you might not have had a future if you hadn't sacrificed that day.

One always has to plan for the future. Else, in time, to get where you want things to be, you spend more time, energy, and money. But when I say plan, I don't mean turn into a fkn OCD. That poisons yours and everyone's present and future.

I think that we should prefer to sacrifise the future for the present. Ofcourse we sould think about the future and prepare for the future y getting educated in the present and learn from the past. But, the past is the past and the present is a moment that is guaranteed. The future is something the we can have no influence on. The future is in the hands of God.

So, I would say, live in the present and not in the future!

I'm afraid that Davo's philosophy is the one that predominates - especially in world politics/economics. We (as a global society) are constantly sacrificing our well-being in the furture for current convenience/profit... one has only to look at the environment to see a prime example.

But I wholeheartedly disagree that the furture is something we have no influence on - on the contrary we should plan carefully to endure that the future will continue to remain bright for generations to come. Living for the moment can be great - and is immediately gratifying, but there is something to be said about resposibility.

I think we have some influence on future but not a full control of it. Hence it is best to control our future as much as we can. It really depends on the individual. Both present and future are part of our lives, so why not pay attention to both? At the same time, what is really "future"? It is actually unknown "present" that will come later on and we can't do much about it. But we have the most control on present, so concentrating on the present and utilizing the opportunities of the present seems the right thing to do. As far as utilizing the present is concerned, everyone will behave differently even if all agree that present is more important, so they will have different futures in the end.

All these are mere speculations. We think that we may control the present or the future. In reality we can barely control some of the present, and rarely the future. Spiritually speaking, the wise thing to do is to not worry about the future and live the present up to the best spiritual standards. That will guarantee the best possible future, so it is as if you have taken care of the future without worrying about it. That is possible because in most spiritual disciplines the future is imbedded in the spiritual practices that one has to carry out at present.

Well I dont see why we need to sacrfice either... i mean.. why do you say "sacrificeing the present for the future"?? I think what we do in the present is both very dependant on what we think for out future and ofcourse still what we do in the past is also for our comfort for that moment, or the very near future, like in the next few hours or so.

So.. I dont see why we need to sacrifice one for the other, both are actually intera-dependant as i see it. Cause we do many things in our daily life that are influnced by "thinking ahead" which is for the future.. But we also do many things which are strictly for NOW... u guys understand my thinking here??? lol.. or am i just saying words that only make sense to me.. lol... :P

Gevo, it is a valid question. I understand it timewise, opportunity-wise... sometimes we have to make choices in what things to invest our time, money, etc. For example, a foolish child or a teenager will invest his time in playing rather than going to school. That means he doesn't sacrifice his present for the future. If he escapes from class to eat icecream there you go, he sacrificed his future for the present icecream. But imagine how many more icecreams he would likely eat had he done well at school, gotten a degree and had a nice job... but you never know, maybe he was going to die before getting any job, so he would rather eat all the icecream he could at present rather than work hard for the future which turned out not to exist for this lifetime. Or maybe, he would win a lottery and have sufficient funds for the rest of his life not to work at all and eat as many icecreams as he wished... so one thing is clear from this picture, that the future is simply unknown and uncontrollable.

What shall we do then? We must do the right thing at present. Too much icecream is never good, neither at present nor in the future. So have one icecream for today. And never miss your classes, even if a 100% certain death is waiting for you tomorrow - studying and gaining knowledge is always the right thing to do, so do it now. Do the right thing at any moment and do not worry about the future. This shall be my philosophy :D

  • 3 weeks later...

i think we have reached a point where we have the needed power to have the ultimate satisfaction by sacrificing, or i should say by killing, the future.

do you think that sometime in the near future, we will suscribe the right of commiting such an act to ourselves?

so what is the point in prolonging our existance? if we commit ourselves to sacrificing the present for the future then most likely when that future becomes the present we will again sacrifice that present for the future after.

so what drives us to behave in that manner, rather than have the ultimate fiesta and end there?

is our instict to survival stronger than our yearn for happiness?

it all has to do with delayed gratification- many people think certain things are worth sacrificing and waiting for- and others think that present issues are more important and they dont want to think about the future just yet--neither extremity is good- you cant always sacrifice things and wait for the future- because today is yesterdays tomorrow :D i good mentor of mine whose really old- :D lol told me that lifes really short and sometimes u gotta take risks- becasue without risks life is boreing- so whether you decide to sacrifice instant hapiness for future hapiness- or decide to live life to the fullest- you need to keep a balance between the two- because sooner or later life's consequences are going to bite u in the a**
