vava
Azat jan, what a great initiative. Let's debunk the myth that Armenians can't come together for a greater good other than enriching someone's pocketbook. Bravo I'll help with what I can. I think something educational, or cultural will make more of an impact in the longterm. And I agree with Gams, lets start small, and if things develop well, then we'll makes things mor 'official' I'm happy to see the enthusiastic responses
Cilician
Hi Everyone, Azat let me know about this thread, and I think it is a great idea. I am willing to help out, as long as I feel the time requirements are manageable. So let your brainstorming lead to a few concrete ideas and I can then give some of thoughts on the ideas, and take it from there... Azat
Raffi, thank you for your offer to assist us. We are definitely interested in doing something, but are not sure what we would attack. I think we are going to have limited funds and wonder what we can accomplish with our funds. Can you possibly give us some ideas on what we can do? Suppose we get little money each month like $100, is there something we can do? I always feel that we can purchase 2, 3, 5, 10 books for the university library. it is always a good cause and unfortunately it is one of the areas that has lacked resources in Yerevan in the last few years. What about maybe trying to assist a family or two each month? Different families each month. I have to say that the flower garden thing sounds very interesting to me as well, but have no clue what it would take to make that happen. Skitts, I know you are in Yerevan and maybe you can give us some hints as well. Anyone has any ideas on what we can do please post here. We need to formulate some ideas and present them to Raffi or someone else(maybe you have relatives that can be the intermediary in Armenia) to validate the ideas for us so we choose and move forward. I believe the thing to do is to setup a paypal account and people can deposit their money there weather it is a dollar or two or 10, and each month someone here in LA can take the money out and go to one of the money sending companies and send it to the designated person in Yerevan. it makes it easy for all who want to donate and those who do not wish to participate they do not have to as it is completely voluntary and anonymous. Maral
Don't you think the easiest to start out with would be to donate supplies? The flower garden is a great idea...but you need people to actually do the work...that can come later after we establish some sort of a reputation. Books are a great idea...you buy the books, you donate them.Done. Edited March 17, 2004 by Maral
gevo27
ok well, iv been wanting to say this ... kind of along Maral's line of thinking Why dont we donate school supplies to schools??? I know they are WAAAAAAYYYY undersupplied for simple educational needs... what ya'll think
Hye_Acher
any other ideas you guys? Yes Azat I do have an idea… I remember schools with broken windows (most no windows at all), cracked doors (some without) which during the winter was impossible to study because we were to busy concentrating on how to keep ourselves warm… I even remember we would go to other classes for few minutes (the one’s that did have few windows to warm up). I think $100 will defiantly remodel at least 4 classrooms imagine by doing so we’ll be able to keep over 150 students warm during the winter. I think we should concentrate on helping areas outside of Yerevan because that’s where the help is most needed. And count me in Good Day!!! I think it's a wonderful idea Azatyush, count me in. And I'll also think about it and ask a few people what can be done. I've also introduced a similar idea to my ASA Executive Team. We were very perplexed, the issue is a little more complex than I thought. You must have a reliable contact in Yerevan to trust that supplies and donations will not fall into the wrong hands. There is an organization called "The Armenian Tree Project" http://www.armeniatree.org, it's a great team of people who are extremely dedicated to their cause. They have made several trips to the Armenian villages where they have provided free lunches to school children and they have planted several trees to restore nature. We have also done a wonderful book and toy drive, the guys drove the collection to the airport and turned it over to their trusted Armenian contact. It was very touching, since the kids wrote back thanking us for the gifts. Money is a very sensitive issue, since it can fall into the wrong hands, as it often does. Although what is the point of supplies if kids are starving? The greatest problem is in the outskirts of Armenia and not in the capital where people live relatively comfortable. You should also avoid Churches at all costs, they are known for taking a hefty fee for their work, and have their own interests in the matter. I think it's important to work with families directly, rather than with large organizations and the government. For example, many single mothers living in the villages don't receive enough governmental support to feed their children or buy clothes. If it can be figured out how to help them directly, it might be very effective. In addition "Doctors without Borders" have a team which is consistently working with families to help them out with economic difficulties. The group is rather small and they are mainly working in Artsakh and Yerevan, as opposed to the villages where the population is struck with a severe poverty. I am very interested in the smaller organizations in Armenia which are not widely known, so not known in fact, that I can't find any. But then again, I haven't done an extensive research. Also there are many sick children in the hospitals, often suffering from malnutrition and other fatal illnesses. I can't seem to get my hands on the statistics, I have to invest more time into this matter. Aside from Yerevan, there is very little information on the outskirts of Armenia available. Anyway just brainstorming. I'll ask around more and let you know what I come across. But kudos to your kaxtser heart for coming up with such a wonderful idea. Azat
Evelunichka jan, I love the Armenian Tree Project website and idea. That is a perfect idea in my little head. Plus when I go back to Armenia in 10 years I can go see the tree and carve my initials on it.(just kidding. ) Agree on the church thing as well. I think the church gets LOTS of money from many donors. We need something different. You guys I really think this project will give us some kind of a reason to be here and not just to waist time. For me it is hope.
gevo27
OK! i think we have ideas.. now we need to vote on them or something to see which way we gonna do it, and what we gonna do first.. so why not make a poll of the ideas and let democracy speak as to which idea we should do first.. and then... atleast this is a step closer... the first draft... then we can figure out how to send the money and who will buy for us what we need... yes ? no?? whats ur guys' thaughts

ED
As I recall, Domino had mentioned some day his extensive work (Armenian genocide) will be published, so, why not make this a reality, a hyeforum project, Domino jan I hope you are not against it, forumers, I like to know what do you think, publishing a book may be the best project we collectively can undertake, among others as well of course. Since this tread is still open for suggestions, I thought I bring this to your attention, I’m sure there is a financial issues involved, well financial sponsorship may be a great help to Domino for completing/publishing this book What do you people think? Azat? And please only serious responses

I dont think its a good idea at al.. sry i dont wanna sound mean, you asked for my opinion...
ED
gevo, as I mentioned in my post, his works have to do with ARMENIAN GENOCIDE, in case you missed it, if you would have taken time to study what he has done and how much timeless affords he has put on during years, as I can see you haven’t even have a slightest idea of what I’m saying, your response hardly qualify for me as SERIOS RESPONS, now, go back and think for a wile before you quote me, I tell you this as me being twice you age, and you shouldn’t say something because you MUST say them, this is not a pissing contest, so get the hell out of my face!!! So much for you and yours alike accomplished by bringing quality of this forum to what it is now.
Sasun
Edward jan, realistically, I don't think we (a few individuals with modest fincances) can publish any book. That's why Azat mentioned that we want to do a small project. We can help Domino in other ways, such as proof reading or other things that we can realistically do, but publishing is a hell of a lot of work and money. Only online publishing is possible without serious investment. Gevo jan, of course you are entitled to your opinion. I agree that Domino has a multi-universe bias in his thinking ( ) but he has done much research on the subject of Armenian genocide that's worth publishing. This is not just my opinion or Edward's opinion, many people agree.
ED
Sasun jan, it may not be as costly as you think, I have a good conections in Armenia and my freinds over there will do it for almost free, that is to print it, possibilites are there only got to know what Domino says. I had that in mind before i posted my idea, freind of mine, poet ESTER DAVITIAN she will help, Samvel Sevada, or Stepan Topchyan, maybe traslation will be involved, I will handel small costs
Sasun
Oh, I didn't think about that Edo. I was only thinking of the high costs associated with publishing in the US (or Canada). Publishing in Armenia is an excellent choice cost-wise as well as providing some small support to the Armenian publishers. Well, if that's possible why not? I don't really know all the details of what it takes to publish a book. Domino, are you following? What do you think?
vava
I think it sounds like a great idea! (but I sorely lack any experience in publishing books) Anyone here publish anything before? And I'm not talking about magazine articles
vava
Of course, Domino would have to be willing....
Azat
I think this is a great idea Edward jan, but 1st we have to see if Domino agrees to this. He has chosen to stay anonymous on these boards and I believe to publish his book he can't be anonymous at that time and he may not choose to do that with us. Second, I have no idea what it takes both financially and workload to publish a book. It may be over our heads. But other than that I think it is a great idea.
