THOTH
Interesting comparo - Cannon S400 (as recommended by Sip) and Olympus D-560 (as recommend by THOTH) (also note that a 4 MP veriosn of the 560 (not sure of the number) - retails about $50 more.... THOTH
Sasun - i don't know - i take video with a video camcorder - not my camera...but i guess ti depends what your looking for - never used my camera for vid (can only do 15 sec anyway)...though my eldset kid is always houding em to do vid..I don't want to take up the space on the memory card... Also - my camcorder does take pretty decent pics - it has aphoto mode (progressive scan) and uses 3 CCDs - so color accuracy is better then most any digital camera (under a few grand)...though resolution ain't so great...good for 4x6s though...and for viewing pics on the comp or on the TV etc
THOTH
Oh and Sip - I do agree the Canon is a great camera - my wife has had use of one through her work and I "tested" it quite extensively - and did prefer it to the Olympus....but not for $200 more! and the Olympus just seems more compact to me...not sure if it is though... Sasun
Generally camcorders don't take good photos. I tried sony trv33, it took very grainy pics and colors were bad. Higher end camcorders might take decent photos but i get the impression everyone recommends to buy a still camera for still pictures. As to video feature on a still camera, of course the quality is nothing to compare to a video camera but it is really cool to have a pocket size camera that can also take an hour long video with sound. THOTH
Well generaly correct - but my camcorder is a semi-pro model that has photo capability built in (and there are a few out there like this now). You would really be very hard pressed to know its not from a digicamera - and I've even blown pics up to 8x10 that are still decent. But yeah - in general most camcorders not made for stills - agreed...and vice versa... Edited December 29, 2003 by THOTH
Sasun
After spending some more time I ordered the Canon S400 (from the same place where Sip has bought turns out it was the cheapest of the stores I was looking). I also ordered 256mb flash card and hope it was the right one.

Sip
Oh geeez I meant to tell you about the flash cards but I forgot. If you can, try to get Sandisk ULTRA II (assuming they haven't shipped your order yet). I got 512 MB (from buy.com) but 256 will be more than enough. Unless you plan to carry more than 2 batteries This ULTRA II design is fantastic. I used to have LEXAR 12x 256MB card but the Ultra II is much faster. It is rated at about 9MB/sec for write and 10MB/sec for read ... it really makes a HUGE difference when using the camera. Oh Sasun, I also recommend the slim canon leater case for that camera. Get the real canon one as it fits great
Sip
For additional batteries, check ebay ... they have 1000mAh (non OEM) ones for about $6 !!!!!! I haven't bought one yet but I will soon. By the way, the 12x lexars CF cards will do about 1.8MB/sec write ... Sasun, if you got the kingston from isquaredinc, that one is probably slower than that ... maybe around 1MB/sec.
Sasun
Yes guys, good idea about the speed. I had ordered the kingston because it was cheap, later I checked circuit city had cheaper SanDisk one http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&...ark_0&oid=80869 so I sent them email to cancel. I will research before buying. Sip I will see, probably one battery will be enough for me in the beginning. But $6 is very cheap for the battery
Sip
Sasun, you want the ULTRA II sandisk ... not the regular. Check buy.com ... they have free shipping (but may be just for US)
Sasun
Yes Sip you are right. I am going to buy that one, I didn't think it was that cheap for that speed

Sasun
Hey guys Im also in the market for a camera. My mate has a Sony DSC-P8 and I really like. Im looking for something compact and around the same price: the Cannons discussed are a little too expensive ....any suggestions? or should I just go with the Sony Accel, since I spent some time shopping for a camera here is my 2 cents: Canon PowerShot A70 is very popular, a little bigger and heavier than the s400 discussed. I have heard many many good things about it. There is also a really small and lightweight Canon PowerShot SD100 Digital Elph, I really liked the size. They are about $120 cheaper than the s400 but both are 3.2 megapixel. The A70 has better characteristics.

Sip
I am slowly getting the hang of it Sasun! Here are a few I took recently: Pic 1 Pic 2 Pic 3 Pic 4 Pic 5 Pic 6 and my favorites Pic 7 Pic 8 I was mostly experimenting with the manual focus and the shutter delays ... the night mode shooting on this is VERY good if you learn to use it correctly. Basically it can open the shutter for a while to get the dark background then fire the flash to get the foreground. On top of that, you can lock the focus on a certain object and then move the camera, mess with the exposure timing and other things. You can get some CRAZY pictures with it. Of course the pics above have been cropped and shrunk for the web.
Sasun
Nice pics Sip, really nice! I didn't expect night shots could have that quality! hope I will have the patience to learn

Of course the pics above have been cropped and shrunk for the web. Wow Seap, a hidden talent of a photographer! Way to go buddy, your exceptional ability in capturing breathtaking scenery never seizes to amaze me! And to swerve back to the topic I recently purchased and received my toy. And I am one happy shopper. Besides the fact that I went on a shopping spree (yes I am a technology shopaholic). But this thread is about cameras so I shall stick to it. First I had established a limited budget --> camera: Canon 3>$300. First I went for Canon PowerShot S230 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom which seemed to be a sweet deal. Small and compact with great resolution and I found it for a price of $249, apparently it turned out to be one of those Brooklyn companies who compensated for their low price by swindling you into buying unnecessary accessories to make an appropriate profit, which came out to be $90 more since the rep convinced me that I MUST buy a high life battery (yeah aha) and they charged me $22 for shipping and some obscene amount for taxes, so z--- that, the order was cancelled before the rep was able to ask me if I have a boyfriend for a second time (apparently it was a dating center as well). Yuck! Not wanting to deal with a person again, being that I am working on my undergrad Geek degree, I decided to stick with pure cyber space. I did some more research and came up with this new deal, and upgraded version of s230---> CANON POWERSHOT SD100 3.2 MP Digital ELPH Camera with 2x Optical Zoom DIGITAL ELPH CAMERA Specs? Here they are *3.2 megapixel resolution produces prints up to 11 x 14 inches *World's smallest retractable 2x optical zoom lens with 3.2x digital zoom *Smallest digital Elph yet; captures video clips with sound up to 3 minutes *Included 16 MB Secure Digital (SD) card *Powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery; connects with Macs and PCs via USB port I got it for a total of $261 everything included, sweet! The pics are awesome and it's beauty!
