Well, my mom got a laptop about a year ago from the Inspiron 8K series, and it really wasn't cheap (CDN $4200 tax included, along with shipment that never got there, so we had to go and pick it up...). The first day it worked fine, and then it started freezing everytime I would load a fairly big program, like Photoshop or Corel Draw.. well, since I know a bit more than my mom does about computers, I tried to see what the problem was, but couldn't figure it out.. so I called technical support, and they told me that it was a software conflict, and that there was nothing they could do, and that I should probably try to format the HD and reinstall everything, as that might solve the problem. Well, I did that, and guess what, it still freezes or crashes at least once a day.. And the fan makes a horrible sound, as if it's a fridge... Compared to that - I got my Toshiba Satellite 2450 for $2800, from Futureshop, without having to pay for delivery/shipment, and with better specifications (of course, technology advances in a year, and prices fall, but still..). My computer hasn't crashed even ONCE, and it makes no noises whatsoever. Moreover, if I have a problem, I can get it fixed in one day without having to wait for them to come and pick it up and then ship it back to me or whatever, because I can just take it to Futureshop, unlike Dell... I had to pay 60 bux for a cab ride from where I live to the Dell "headquarters" in order to pick up the computer that I paid $300 on for delivery to my doorstep, not to mention how rude they were in absolutely refusing to return the delivery money to me, since they company they had contracted their delivery orders to [Purolator ] failed to deliver the computer (and I had to sit at home for 3 days in order not to miss them in case they came - cos when I called them the first day, they said it would be there the next day, and everytime I called them, they told me the same thing..)........ Toshiba has excellent customer service. I haven't needed them so far, but I know theyr'e good because my friend had dropped his Toshiba and his HD had been damaged as a result, and he contacted his dealer, and they gave him a new HD the next day. So yeah, I wouldn't even touch a Dell again in my life. I love my Toshiba. If you want to get a decent notebook, I say get a Toshiba, it's top quality stuff. Not sure about the others, but my friend has had HUGE issues with Compaq. I don't know about Sony or IBM. But there really is no way Dell is comparable to Toshiba. And - wireless is included in the Toshiba deal, it's not in Dell's. You have to pay extra, and yes, it does come down to paying more for the same thing. God knows how much price comparison I've done between Dell and Toshiba this summer. And if you're picking up a desktop computer, do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT pick up a Gateway. It's a MAJOR MAJOR headache. Edit note: And, Dell heats up like crazy... you can probably fry eggs on it... it beats the purpose of being a LAPtop. Sip Posted December 9, 2003 Report Share Posted December 9, 2003 I have had a Dell Latitude C510/610 for about 18 months now and it's been absolutely perfect. Not a single problem ... no over heating ... no fan noise. The batteries (when using both ... you can hotswap with the cd/dvd drive) last a solid 6 hours which is amazing. 1.2Ghz, 512 MB RAM, 14" LCD, 40Gig drive ... built in ethernet, modem, etc (no wireless), and includes TV out. My Sony R505-TSK on the other hand is very loud and pretty abnoxious to use. The old R505G was great. But newer Sony's seem to be on the unreliable side. Vava, when you get closer to making your decision, then you may get more useful feedback. As a rule of thumb, you can't really go wrong with a new Dell as their service/replacement policy is one of the better ones from what I hear. Toshiba is also an excellent choice but these deals on the Dells are just too good. I have done a lot of looking at the TabletPCs recently so if you are thinking of going that route, let me know. Try to get a different power supply and plug it in your mother board, you’ll have a chimney for a Computer. But they don’t warn you on the customized voltage, they just allow you to experience it instead. And their customer support are idiots, which jerk novices around until their warranty runs out and then they say that the part is bad, except now they would have to pay for it, since the warranty ran out. They're beautiful but horrible. Dell and Gateway are two companies I would never think about buying a computer from... I assembled my own desktop computer a while back, custom parts, everything worked great. Of course, it's old now, and is slooooooooooow, that's why I had to get a new one, but still, I had NO problems whatsoever with my old one, except for the RAM problems caused by my irresponsible launching of huge programs that really wouldn't run on a 64 MB memory and 4 mb graphics card.. Most common crashes are software and incompatibility (i.e. poorly maintained) related as opposed to hardware ... If there was a systematic flaw with the design of the Dell hardware, wouldn't you think my several Dell workstations back at UCLA, my current ones at UW, and my laptop (not to mention the dozens of others around the group at school) would also have been crashing "all the time"? Well they never have ... systems have been rock solid and my 1Ghz PIII based workstation at UCLA has been up just as long as my SUN Ultra5. And what do you mean by incompatible? If a computer fails to render something because its graphics card is unreliable or not good enough, it would be the hardware's fault, rather than the software's... I mean, if Photoshop runs perfectly well on my Toshiba that has the same specifications as my friend's Dell, and having the exactly the same programs installed on it, no more and no less, what would explain the fact that Dell crashes every time? Not to mention, getting Dell's wireless to work for my friend's laptop took ages, and the computer networking services failed to do it... i had to work on it for hours in order to get it working. Same wireless network, different computer (my Toshiba), and it worked like magic the second i switched it on.. My friend got a new Dell Inspiron recently, and he too said that he can't seem to be able to do much without having to restart his computer at least a coupla times before he's finished with what he wants to do.. again, not talking about notepad or paint lol.. ED Posted December 9, 2003 Report Share Posted December 9, 2003 Seapan, I lease my computers thru Dell, and now they are up for return or by them out for fair market value, and I was looking into other systems, wile back someone mentioned Alienwere systems, and the kind of work I do, need fast machines with good video card which alien has, I was wondering do I have any reason not to buy Alienwere or I should stick with Dell, I had my share of problems with there workstations, crushing all the time, tell me if Alieanwere is any deferent.
