Dan Posted December 4, 2003 Report Share Posted December 4, 2003 Am I the only one who really likes the idea of e-books? I have tons of them on my HD, and I actually read them... Why do people think it's a stupid idea? I mean, I personally prefer having a book in my hands rather than on my computer, but I don't have enough money to buy all the classics. Can you imagine this, I found the Malleus Maleficarum online, and I had been looking for that book for ages. Hmmm, so yeah, I've read Somerset Maugham's Of Human Bondage, George Orwell's Animal Farm on my computer, and once I finish Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, I'm going to read Orwell's 1984 - I finally found a copy of it online! If it's not something I want to own per se or am really unable to find it anywhere else, I read it on the net. It's an excellent idea though. I have many ebooks, I convert works in ebooks myself. As well, when you don't have a CRT as monitor, you can consider using ebooks as actual books, but with CRTs, yuk. I really like the idea of Bill Gates doing something for me for free I tried the text to speech dowloadable software at my work but I couldnt' hear sound, didn't have much time though to figure out. I will try again tomorrow. But I don't know how to make the narrator read what I want. I have a Handspring Visor and I used to read alot of e-books on it. I would not recommend a Handspring Visor, though, I would recommend something with at least 8 mb or ram and rechargeable batteries built in. Mine needs external batteries and this is a pain, I use recharagebles but when it I change the batteries I sometimes lose all my info and need to re-synch with the PC. At best-buy they have a Sony Palm(black and white) with 33 mhz, 16 mb of RAM, 16 ROM and a rechargeable battery built into the unit(like I recommend) for $80 something.(To give a comparison I paid over 200 for my Visor in 2000 and it has 8mb of RAM only,a 16 mhz processor, and the ROM is not flashable so I cannot upgrade the OS without wasting RAM and no built in rechargeable batteries.) This is what I recommend, it is cheap it has plenty of RAM for e-books, unlike dedicated e-book readers you can use other software on it. Reading on these things takes alot of the disadvantages out of e-books. With the backlight on my Handspring Visor alot of times, on purpose I read in the dark, because you can see perfectly the text with the backlight on in the dark, you see even better than in daylight like this. Also Textz.com is a good source for e-books, but I hate their stupid and overly complex layout that takes long to load and is cumbersome to use, and a big waste of bandwith.
