ExtraHye
When I lost my job. Everyone said, don't worry. That happened for a reason, now you could find a better job.Or when my friends boyfriend broke up with her. Everyone said, That happened for a reason, it's better he broke up with you now, then in the long run. What do you guys think about this saying. Do you think it's true, or just a way to make people feel better about themselves. Edited December 2, 2003 by ExtraHye
Sip
You will never hear me saying anything as stupid as that! Of course EVERYTHING happens for a reason. If there wasn't a reason, it wouldn't happen On a related note, I hate when people tell other people (like when taking a test) .. "oh don't worry. You'll do fine" ... or "it'll be alright" ... HOW DO YOU KNOW? Most of the time, they don't even know what's on the test. They have no idea how much you know. They don't know what your abilities are ... they just have an automatic way of saying "oh I'm sure you'll do fine" I try very hard never to make meaningless statements like that. But I am sure I am also probably guilty of that at times.

Sip
But I have been known to say "... maybe things have worked out for the best", often followed by describing a scenario where things may have ended up very differently ... just to give a different perspective to the person to realize that not everything is usually as bad as it seems!!! Those kinds of things I do a lot and I find that they are usually helpful for people to better understand the position they are in. But they are very different than "oh it must have happened for a some reason that someone or something (i.e. some higher power?) intended". Twilight Bark
Of course EVERYTHING happens for a reason. If there wasn't a reason, it wouldn't happen Before Domino performs his duties as the keeper of multiple universes, let me remind you that quantum fluctuations occur for no reason at all. I would have liked to comment on weightier issues, but ... too down for that.

Neither do they happen because of a reason... reason or no reason is not part of Fadixian 7 certainties. Twilight Bark
.. "oh don't worry. You'll do fine" ... or "it'll be alright" ... HOW DO YOU KNOW? Most of the time, they don't even know what's on the test. They have no idea how much you know. They don't know what your abilities are ...Well, it's not as bad as that. "They" probably have a pretty good idea that they are saying it to someone intelligent and responsible. And of course in the (very) end it is always "alright". We die and all is resolved. I think you would have to agree with that. Alright, how about this one: "I have been looking for this thing for an hour, and I find it in the last place I look." As if they are expected to keep looking for it after they found it in the "last" place they looked. SirumemKez20
Does everything happen for a reason? Question: Does everything happen for a reason? Answer: I think this is the wrong question to ask. It assumes that God has a divine purpose behind everything, even causing sin and tragedy. God isn’t responsible if a criminal murders someone, so He doesn’t have a "reason" for this sin. Of course, God doesn’t cause things out of His will to happen, although He certainly is in control of all things. That means He has the ability to bring something good out of bad things that happen. A better question is, "Can God use anything that happens for His purposes?" The answer for that is Yes! Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." This verse doesn’t say that He causes all things to happen, but that He can cause all things to work together for good. God is sovereign and can take our mistakes, failures, and calamities, and adopt them into His plan. If He couldn’t, no one would have any hope because we all have sinned and failed. Before you ask Him to take control of the events in your life, have you asked Him to take control of your life? The promise of Romans 8:28 is for those who are "called according to His purpose." First submit yourself to His purpose, and then you can rest assured that He will work all things together for good. Twilight Bark
TB, I just wonder what is your take on my multiple universe stuff. Don't you find it fantastic? Well, you must remember that I gave you the initial idea when you claimed that our universe looked as if it was designed to support intelligent life. Of course neither of us is the originator of the multiple universes idea. Fantastic? Cynics would say yes, because it is all fantasy . I would prefer the word "fascinating". You remind me a part of me when I was 14. It's nice to see that life hasn't sucked that 14-year old out of you. Now I have to get back to real life in my current universe. Sasun
What do you guys think about this saying. Do you think it's true, or just a way to make people feel better about themselves. Yes, in the world of humans (not small particles) everything happens for a reason. (Sorry to hear that you lost your job though)

Dan
What do you guys think about this saying. Do you think it's true, or just a way to make people feel better about themselves.I think it's a load of BS. I hate it when people say that. Everything that happens must have a cause, but not everything must have a reason (as in purpose, end). Hmmm, I guess people understand this quote differently than I do - I don't think it means that everything happens due to a cause, but that everything happens because it is for another purpose (?) I don't know? Hmmm.

Dan
I think I think that there is a loss in meaning or a different implication that is lost through translation... You may have given me the initial idea, but I did not accepted it at that time. It was later, when I rejected everything that I finally came up with this. As for you when you were 14 years old. I don't know how you were at that age, so I'll take it as a compliment.
hyebruin
just because we do not fully understand the lessons for a certain event does not mean that there is not one!--sometimes the lesson to be learned is smaller relative to other lessons, so we fail to recognize the why and most importantly the 'why me?'... however the placebo effect is an extremely powerful thing!! mind over matter definitely and there have been many many studies done on this where the manifestations of it are not only psychological but very real, physical and biological!!--- that actually might be an important part of prayer (it can be anything! good or bad!)...so next time someone wishes you 'good luck' or offers a couple of encouraging words...just the fact that you heard it and it has entered your consciousness will make it seem more real to you (obviously with other factors at play too here!)...but believing in yourself or in whatever else it is you believe in, whether it be something you read or something someone said, is a good predictor of probable success!!---don't take my word for it! the placebo effect is alive well and functioning---whatever YOU believe will become YOUR reality!!---that's why experts tell people who want to lose weight to already imagine themselves slim, or if you want to be a cop or a firefighter or a doctor or a dentist...just imagine yourself in that role and take steps to achieve that objective... UKGIRL28
What do you guys think about this saying. Do you think it's true, or just a way to make people feel better about themselves To me..its just a saying to make people feel better about themselves, whether someone is saying it to you or vice versa.. its the same as saying 'shit happens in life, its time to move on so forget about it!' Its learning from your mistakes and getting on with your life.. I believe things happen for a reason, not coz of some super power controlling our fate/destiny, but coz of the decisions we make and the choices available to us...its all due to 'cause and effect'
