sev-mard
That's great Sevo, I need to do the same. However, I am too lazy so instead of reading Mahabharat I watch it on the DVD I wish there was a Quran movie also. Yeah I see what your into via the both on Guru Chimony, nice stuff there. The Mahabharata(say that four times fast) is a great story and the fact that it and the gita are combined and intertwined is awesome. Some great knowledge in those books that facilitate seeing the universe and Life as one. Western thought(religious) is rigid in the sense that it's God / Church / You. Hinduism is more of a personal relationship with said god, which is in each person.
Sasun
Yeah, I hear you. There is very little rigidity and dogmatism in Hinduism. That's why I like it very much. Hinduism is the most mature and welcoming of all religions in my mind. It is very ancient yet there is much to learn even today. The beginning story in Mahabharat, for example, thousands of years ago there was a rightous king named Bharat. He had 4-5 sons. When he got old he had to appoint a successor one of his sons according to tradition. However, none of the sons was fit to be a good king so he broke the tradition and appointed a king someone else who was not from his family and was fit and competent to rule. Now this very high standard of selflessness and service was set up thousands of years ago. It was not just a theory but a practice of the king being the servant of the people rather than someone superior with privileges. I wish our democratic presidents were nearly as selfless as Bharat. sev-mard
Great example and those books are full of them. They are greatly written in the sense that even when it seems like merely a story you can gleen much of what other holy books try and pound into you, out of them. I am close friends with an older Indian man who's daughter I went to college with. He breaks down these texts in the most awesome way. I truly love studying with him. Sasun
Sevo, I agree. Those texts are not an easy read, maybe because of translation too but the concepts themselves are not easy to digest. It is good to have someone more knowledgable on your side to guide you through the deep philosophical meanings of the stories. By the way, Ramayan (or Ramayana) is another great text full of divine wisdom ( I must confess though that I haven't read it but have seen a 12 DVD series on it with a lot of direct quotes from the text )
