hyebruin
a friend and i always seem to come to this 'tenative' conclusion when discussing guys...she suggests and i sort of agree that due to lack of (or scarcity?) good quality armenian men in the l.a. area, we (she and i) should plan a trip to armenia and find a couple of nice guys there! what do you all think? she's yerevantzeeh and says "enkahn laav laav d@gherk gahn hayastanum...." and i kind o' want to believe her ... usually it's the women who are 'brought over' here, what about the guys? any opinions out there? {obviously, i'm not serious here , just a fun idea to entertain!}....actully a japanese-american coworker of mine suggested that i could order myself a japanese mail-order guy from japan...i thought that was hillarious ...he always says his wife picked him out from a catalog! and i told him well, if they build their men like their lasting auto engines, i might give it a shot! shiner
First of all you have to make sure that they are not just using you to emigrate.Second of all I think that most of those guys have "old school" thinking that might clash with the somewhat more Americanized woman I assume you are. Exactly! Escpessially, with the second point, as IMO it only really applies to the guys. Edited September 17, 2003 by Accelerated
nairi
No offence to anyone, but if I ever decide to have a boyfriend, my man definitely needs some Western/European/Dutch qualities. I don't care if he's Armenian or not, but he should at least make an effort to feel comfortable in my family and culture (no matter how worthless and pathetic they are). The selection that I saw in Armenia a few years ago was so minimal and so disgusting that quite frankly I would prefer to stay a spinster for the rest of my life. The gay Armenians were the only "normal" guys there. And I agree with Btac, many WILL only want you because you're Western <-- they're the grossest kind. Another note for women/girls: you will be STARED at mercilessly! NO!!!! Not by guys! You'll be lucky if you even have eye-contact with one, though that's the last thing you want (don't be fooled though! Just because he's not looking AT you doesn't mean he didn't notice you!). I'm talking about staring girls. NO MERCY AND NO MANNERS! They will scan you from head to toe, they will lower their sunglasses to do it if they have to, and they will NOT look away until you are completely out of their sight. I've noticed many doing that in Glendale as well, though not as bad as girls in Armenia. But if you're used to it, or if you're one that does it yourself, then I guess you can ignore this last part. Armat
There are plenty of smart good looking Armenian students at Harvard, MIT and greater Boston area. Bostonians do possess for the most part more down to earth attitude to life as verses shallow materialism in LA. I must confess I lived in LA for ten years and hated every min of it. Let me know when you are in Boston ,I will gladly show you around.
THOTH
Bruin - I would seriously consider what Nairi and Btac are saying. I doub't that you will find what your looking for in Armenian...but I guess one never knows...still there is much to be said for a relationship with someone (local/iwith common culture...American & not just Armenian) etc - that you have more convergence of values, interests and familiarity...plus finding someone for a long distance romance or such - well its frought with problems...hope this helps (?) Ignoring, Sip, Azat, Harut, Domino and all the rest wonderfull representatives of our stock is just not fair. You can even consider me, as a last resort solution. Sip
Gamavor, LMAO! I can't believe you included Azat in that group! He is in a group all by himself!!!! (you interpret that how you want Azatica) But Bruin ... you know what they say ... the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence (no matter which side you're on). In all honesty, if you can't find it in LA, don't bother ... you won't find it ANYWHERE. And Nairi, a "spinster"? hehehe ... I had never heard that before but I guess they actually do have a word for it! But in your case, I would much prefer the synonym "maiden aunt"
Azat
gamavor no matter what Sip and Thoth say about you I think you're the BOMB!!! Thoth, I think you are cute too. Bruin, I agree with Sip, if you can't find a guy in LA you will not be able to find it anywhere. There are all kinds of guys in LA and in Hayastan and I am sure in Boston too, but for sure in Hayastan you are going to find more of the traditional(not that there are no westernized) guys that you may clash with. Nairi jan, where are all those women that you talk about. I just want once in my life for someone to check me out. PLEASE.
MJ
According to statistics available from sources affiliated with the European Union, in the last 10 years, 80% of the people who have left Armenia are at the age of approximately 40 years, now. Of them, about 80% are male. Furthermore, there is a disproportionate imbalance between the numbers of young male and female populations in Armenia. Some say that for every 5 females there is one male currently residing in Armenia. This phenomenon has a profound impact on the social fabric of the population in Armenia. Armenian Army, in turn, has become a machine for breaking the male population. While being a solder of the nation was the highest honor 10 years ago, serving in the Army has become one constant fight for survival today. The structure of the Army is based on the well-known Soviet paradigm of “dedovshchina,” which has been elevated to unprecedented heights in Armenia. “Dedovshchina” implies the total submission of the new conscripts to the conscripts of the previous year. This has become an institutionalized phenomenon. From the day of the arrival of the new conscript the institution pursues the goal of his breaking – first psychologically. If he does not submit, then they appeal to other methods to break him physically. Eventually, this results also in the psychological breakup. This phenomenon is widely known and its psychological impact propagates also amongst the representatives of the pre-army age. As a result, the entire male population becomes psychologically broken - and this is under the circumstances of winning the war. Now, imagine what happens if one loses a war. On the other hand, the female population of the younger generation has become much more empowered on the relative scale. If in the past, male population was the provider of the family since the higher paying jobs used to go to the male population. It is not the case anymore. Therefore, there is a sort of equality between the younger female and male populations today. However, the female population of the age above 35 is the most disempowered segment, yet. I think that things would be much different in the next generation. Steadily, a vast category of single mothers will emerge. Their children will have much different psychology. Eventually, the generation of their children would be much healthier. The Armenian nation 20 years from now would be totally different from what we have today. The male machoism would subside, and the females would become the spine of the nation – as it should be. It would be easily accepted by the younger generation males because they would grow up without fathers and they would much readily accept the female dominance. Then, our nation would finally become a healthy one and the future of Armenia would look brighter – females are much more capable of building a better society then males. Additionally, they are much stronger people then the males are. This is, of course, if we don’t lose Armenia before the emergence of the new generation. Azat
Wow. Never thought about that, but I am sure it is true. Maybe I should go back to Armenia instead of the Bruin. I guess that would also explain why the women would check out Nairi who is there to steal one of their man. I believe that a male population(and to a certain extent a females as well) growing up without a father would result in to a tragedy for a nation. Kids who grew up without a father in the states are the adults who do not take risks, and certain amount of risk taking is important for the nation especially in business. MJ
Azat, Armenian females are risk takers, their primary risk being the Armenian males.

Twilight Bark
Depressing as it may be, Armenia's societal development level in many respects resembles that of Turkey in the 1970's. At two extremes of "seriousness", if you look at the military culture, and what passes as "television programming", the similarities are scary. As for self-deprecating male-bashing; it can be fun I am sure. But recent research (in the US) showed that single-mother household was much worse than a single-father household for the welfare of the child. Unsurprisingly, households where both parents are present is the best for the child. We have all observed the shortcomings of the "typical Armenian male". However, we must note that one of the items in the list of their flaws is their lack of involvement in child-rearing. This means that the children are brought up in pseudo-single-mother households. This would not only explain the shortcomings consistent with the social research, but would also somewhat circuitously place the "blame" on the mothers. Please note that I don't really mean blame when I mean "blame". It is a chicken-or-egg sort of problem. As such, the problem is self-propagating. And it cannot be solved by moving to a single-mother model, as the current situation is not much different from such a model. "Making the males accept female dominance" is the old "break the damn losers" philosophy sugar-coated with a thin layer of pseudo-enlightened modernism. The solution lies in the evolution of Armenian family, wherein the mothers would pay as much attention to nurture their sons' psyche as they do to their daughters'. Then the boys who grow up would become the second half of the environment that produces healthy minds. It is going to take time, and the "outside influences" (e.g. TV programs providing behavioral examples) will be a major factor in this evolution, not the amazon takeover of the country. gamavor
"Making the males accept female dominance" I will, if she has the looks of Valeria Matza, the devotion of Mother Teresa, the attitude of Lady Di. The only bad thing is that the chances to meet a girl like this are 50% (call me a pesimist now)!
hyebruin
thanks for all the feedback! interesting to know what opinions are out there on this topic! ---well, obviously the guy will have to be open minded! i don't even like guys who are all uptight! YUKKKK!!! but you never know, maybe there are some liberated, free thinking armos over there! ~~in l.a. it's all about the looks and "hook ups" and the 'me me me' attitude; this is a city filled with lust, finding love here is as rare as winning the jackpot or getting hit by lightening!! ---just my observation---

Sasun
It is funny that women always have an ideal of a 'prince' in their mind. Why prince? Is a kingdom always necessary with the groom? Why not have an ideal of, for example, car mechanic, or an astronaut ? At any rate, when it comes to reality, very often women don't know what they really want. They will list all those qualities and requirements, then they will find someone who has none of those qualities, but some other qualities and they like the qualities of the guy much better than what they had in their ideals. Am I right? Or maybe I am just an ignorant in these matters...

Susan, my theory is they see the p, the n, and the "ce" at the end you figure out the rest. Yah, that's how the mind works. There's research to back it up.
