  • 2 weeks later...

I was having a crazy day at work on Friday when one of my friends (Moso you know who) called me and asked: "An, are you coming to the Mojave Desert?" I immediately knew the source of inspiration. I asked "Are you reading Coelho's 'Valkyries' by any chance?" She started laughing and I started planning. Had been wanting to do this for the longest time. It was going to be a full moon that night and we hit the road at around 4:30 am. Took us about 3 hours to get to the first set of sand dunes. Of course we stopped to check it out and slide down the dunes. Only after returning to our car did I realize that I had driven a bit too far and my front tires were stuck. Unlike me, my friend did not panic and tried to figure out a way to get the car moving. We put pieces of wood and rocks behind the tires but the wheels just kept on spinning and spinning. Then we started digging the sand that was around the wheels and under the hood, which I think made matters worse. Eventually we gave up, called AAA and sat on the hot sand waiting for our rescuers.

I will never forget those 3 hours of my life in the middle of the desert, under the burning sun ... when I learned how to listen to the silence of the desert.

What kind of car? Did you only have one wheel spinning? If so, next time you're stuck in the middle of the desert like that, try pressing the brake (not all the way) and then give it some gas (all in first gear) at the same time as pressing the brake.

The other thing you want to do is to drop the air pressure in the tires. If you have one of those small air compressors, drop it very low (maybe 12PSI) but if not, then you don't want to go too low since you won't be going anywhere with flat tires obviously :D On a related note, it's always a good idea to carry one of those cheap air compressors in the car that plug into the cigarette lighter (I've seen them as low as $7 at Walmart).

Also, you can try to put a jack under the car, raise the wheel, and fill up under it with sand ... this might work in some cases but not if you're stuck really bad and if there is no firm place to put the jack ... carrying a piece of wood or firm base for the jack is also a good idea.

Now once you start moving, keep moving and let the momentum take you back to the road... don't try to turn too sharply and don't slow down or else you'll sink again.

.. ok ok I'll shut up now. I know it's too late now.

alright one more thing and THEN I'll shut up ... if you are really stuck, you can also take out the mats/carpets from inside the car and put them under and in front of the wheels to help you find traction (or behind the wheels if you are going backwards).

Ha ha ... you guys are too cute :) Sip, it's the new VW Jetta. Yeah I know ... we should have taken my friend's SUV :) Thank you for all the advice but I think I'll stay away from sand for a while. But that's good info to keep in mind. Oh, we tried to use the jack but could not figure out how.

Mos, AAA actually cost us around $150.00 b/c we were not on a driveable road.

That's what you say now but you have been bitten by the bug. I give it a month before you get the cravings to go get away from people at least for a few hours again ... and who knows ... maybe you'll even be doing this.

Just kidding ... the key is not to go alone (as in one vehicle) ... I know gas is not very conducive to driving now but all you need is one other vehicle in case you break down to just get away from it all and maybe even spend the night watching those stars and just listening to nothing (love that part until you actually hear something in the dark ).

By the way, next time you want to go somewhere like this, go check out Anza Borrego. It's good to take an SUV (definitely not a brand new jetta :P) but a lot of places you can go with just 2 wheel drive (no 4x4 needed). It's about 150 miles from Glendale ... Heck just the drive there would be great fun and there are a lot of places to just stop and enjoy the scenery of the desert. ...

... you take the 15 down to Temecula, take CA 79 South towards INDIO, then take the CR-S2 to Scissors Crossing. This are all paved roads but you will first love the drive on CA 79 ... but then REALLY love CR-S2. The desert there is VERY beautiful.

At Scissors Crossings, you can take the 78 back through Julian and Ramona back to Ocean Side, again, a VERY nice drive.

Heck you can even do all this in the Jetta! But beware that there's not much around on CR-S2 so don't start it with an empty gas tank and take all the necessary safety precautions if going alone.

Vava jan, he probably does not get enough fiber. :)

style_images/master/snapback.png

Ha! As if he needs more fibre?! This guy is a four-legged, walking poop factory. I can't wait to see what comes out tomorrow. :yucky:

So to cap off my great day: the firemen just left my place. It stinks in here. Our neighbour downstairs had lit some incence in her plants - the ashes were smoldering, and soon enough the roots of her plants were slowly burning. The horrible smell of smoke filled up our living room over the course of a few hours - so after no response from the folks downstairs I called the fire dept...... anyways, no harm done, just a stinky living room and pissed off neighbours!

The trip is its own reward :P

Sip, would I find Borrego Springs there?

style_images/master/snapback.png

Yup ... By the way, I checked some of my older GPS maps of the routes I have taken and I was a bit off ... the nice drive on CR-S2 is actually between Scissors Crossing and going south to Ocotillo... not to be confused with Ocotillo Wells which is like 80 miles away.

Funny story about that is one time a group of us were waiting at Ocotillo for someone to show up (yup she was the only other Armenian to join the group and yup she was 17 and yup she was driving her brand spanking new lifted truck and yup she didn't have a map :D) ... and after a couple of hours of being late she called me all crying and lost ... turns out she was going towards Ocotillo Wells and worst of all, she was just about out of gas and panicing :D ... the rest is a long story but we finally found her.
