GORE'S "ONE PERCENT" WHOPPER IS 100 PERCENT BOGUS

 

If Bill Clinton is a fan of the Big Mac, Al Gore's choice is most definitely the Whopper. Gore is again on the defensive over his false claims - this time about a disaster relief trip to Texas that never happened, a Florida school's problems with overcrowding, his comments about Governor Bush's experience, and other topics. But the King Whopper of all may have been the fib the Vice President told about the Bush tax relief plan:

THE WHOPPER SUPREME. . . At several points in the debate, Gore looked a national TV audience squarely in the eye and uttered a blatant falsehood about the Bush tax relief plan: "Under Governor Bush's tax cut proposal, he would spend more money on tax cuts for the wealthiest one percent than all of the new spending that he proposes for education, health care, prescription drugs and national defense, all combined."

 

. .AND THE SECRET SAUCE. But according to the Washington Post and others, Gore "inflated" the size of the Bush tax cut. (Washington Post, October 4, 2000) Governor Bush sets aside almost twice as much for new spending for prescription drugs, education and defense ($270 billion over 10 years) as he does for reducing the top tax rate to 33 percent ($149 billion over 10 years).

 

MYSTERY MEAT. Governor Bush offers a U.S.-certified Grade-A tax cut, while Al Gore is just serving up mystery meat: "If mom and dad in a $78,000, two-kid household both work and put the kids in day care, the Gore plan gives them a break - but if mom stays home with the kids, forget it. Bush's plan covers everyone; Gore's covers only 'the right people.'" (Michael Kelly, Washington Post, 10/05/00)

 

Americans want a president who will tell the truth - not a politician who will say anything to get elected.

Excerpted From New York Times (R. Berke's Memo, 10/6/00):

 

"For years, his political opponents have groused that Vice President Al Gore has trouble with facts. They pounced on statements he made about his service in Vietnam, about his record in Congress and even about the price he has to pay for his dog's arthritis medicine.

 

On Tuesday, they got even more ammunition: Several of Mr. Gore's comments in his debate with Gov. George W. Bush set off a fresh outcry over what even some of his supporters acknowledge is a tendency to embellish anecdotes about his roles in events..

 

While many politicians are prone to spice up a story here and there, Republicans and Democrats say Mr. Gore's shading of the truth has become so frequent that some politicians are no longer dismissing it as sloppy oratory from a candidate under the glare of television cameras.

 

Mr. Gore's most recent troubles began with the first question of the debate. The moderator, Jim Lehrer of PBS, noted that Mr. Gore had once questioned whether his opponent had the experience to be president and asked him what he meant. Mr. Gore denied that he had ever raised questions about Mr. Bush's qualifications for the presidency. The truth is, he had. In a speech to the American Society of Newspaper Editors in April, Mr. Gore cited Mr. Bush's call for a tax cut and posed this question: "Does he have the experience to be president?"

 

Then there was Mr. Gore's story of a 15-year-old girl in Sarasota, Fla., who he said is such a victim of school crowding that she has to stand in class. The fact is, the girl has a desk, and went without one for only a day. At another point, Mr. Gore said he had traveled with James Lee Witt, the director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to inspect fire and flooding damage in Texas in June 1998. In fact, Mr. Gore went to Texas, but not with Mr. Witt.

 

At another point, Mr. Gore said he "took a risk" in asking the former Prime Minister of Russia, Viktor S. Chernomyrdin, to become personally involved in negotiating an end to the conflict in Kosovo. In fact, President Boris Yeltsin of Russia had two weeks early designated Mr. Chernomyrdin as a special envoy to the Balkans and the diplomatic mission that Mr. Gore described had been initiated by other top officials in Russia, Europe and the United States.

 

People who know Mr. Gore have suggested that he was reared in a political family where embellishments were part of life. And Mr. Gore spent his childhood in a way that was intended for use in a press release. His mother, Pauline, used to tell reporters that she would have dinner with her son no matter what else was going on. "Nothing lonelier than a meal eaten alone," she would say. The truth is Mr. Gore was alone a lot.

 

Whatever the reason, the vice president's tangled recollections have begun to draw attention because there are so many examples. Another reason is that they are curiously at odds with his reputation - and the image he is trying to project - as a politician of great intelligence who is a stickler for the facts.

 

Dems are Worried. Several prominent Democrats said privately that they were worried that Mr. Gore was giving ammunition to his opponents. Indeed, Mr. Bush and the Republicans have gleefully seized on Mr. Gore's statements.."

Ararat, I think there is nothing wrong with Cheney. He is not any more against the Genocide recognition, as anybody else in his position, I think. He used to be the Secretary of Defense, and used to be the CEO of a large Energy Services company. In the first case, he was obligated by his duty to not antagonize the Turks, in the second case, he had obligations to the shareholders of his company.

 

As far as I know, the US administration has always been against the antagonization of Turkey, no matter what promises had they made to the Armenian organizations prior to elections, and no matter if they were Republicans or Democrats. I would expect the same to continue regardless of the election results, at least for a decade to come.

 

I think that Cheney is the most respectable man in this campaign.

Gore: A Candidate In Trouble?

You know a candidate is in trouble when the Los Angeles Times is already mulling explanations for his possible defeat.

 

You know a candidate is in trouble when USA Today is reporting on internal backbiting in his campaign.

 

You know a candidate is in trouble when The Washington Post questions which version of the man will show up for tomorrow's debate, when the New York Times says his party is nervous, when Newsweek has his own advisers saying he couldn't win a popularity contest.

 

Al Gore is in trouble, at least according to the media measurement of such matters with three weeks to go. (Yes, we know, George W. Bush was in trouble a couple of weeks back, but that was several story lines ago.)

 

Here's part of Ron Brownstein's potential funeral notice in the L.A. Times "If Al Gore can't overcome George W. Bush's mid-October surge, the vice president's campaign aides already have a ready explanation for his defeat. It's two words: Bill Clinton. Through millions of dollars in polling, Gore's camp has concluded that many voters have a deep, impenetrable, almost irrational hatred of the president."

 

Duh.

 

"But the same polls that show most voters disliking Clinton personally also show that a solid majority of Americans like his policies. Clinton's job approval rating remains higher than Ronald Reagan's late in his presidency. In Los Angeles Times surveys all year, only a small minority of voters have expressed a desire for major changes from Clinton's policy direction. Even Bush lately has conspicuously praised Clinton. ... So here's a provocative thought: If Gore loses it may not be because he resembles Clinton too much, but too little."

Beyond who they appoint to the Supreme Court, does it really matter who gets into office?

 

Since both parties s*ck, maybe keeping the balance of power between the Presidency, the Senate and the House is the key. This way neither party's schemes get ram-rodded through.

 

BTW, I am by no means pro-Bush, but there's one report that he scored higher than Gore on his SATs. Haven't been able to find Gore's score, but Bush scored higher than I did (bastard!).

I think the controversy regarding the Supreme Court justices is a little exaggerated. Nobody, I think, is going to reverse the legal framework of abortion, though they (Republican leaning ones) will try to make it as hard as possible.

 

I think for very short period of time – for two years, it will be useful if one of the parties (preferably the preferred one ) controls all three institutions, so that to get few things done. But even if the House and the Senate stay with the Republicans, they are going to have only a raiser sharp majority, so cannot screw things up. There always will be few Republicans jumping ship on each controversial issue.

 

Indeed Bush’s Yeil grades are better than Gore’s Harvard grades. I saw Barbara Bush announce it on TV on the campaign trail, today.

 

To me the most important thing in electing President in such an advanced Democracy is the personality. I feel terrified from that idea that I may turn the TV on for the next four years, and see Gore’s face.

Gore, Bush roll out gags at $900,000 fund-raiser

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The two men now running for the White House attended a dinner in honor of a man who lost his own presidential race in 1928.

 

Vice President Al Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush each hope the other will share that fate with the late Al Smith.

They traded barbs Thursday night during the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation dinner which, while known for its irreverence and political wit, also raised $900,000 for health care programs in the Archdiocese of New York.

 

Gore was introduced by the great-grandson of Smith, a Roman Catholic and four-term governor of New York.

 

"Your great-grandfather was my favorite kind of governor: the kind who ran for president and lost," said Gore.

 

Bush also mentioned Smith's ill-fated campaign, admitting, "It gives me hope that in America it's still not possible for a fellow named Al to be the commander-in-chief."

 

 

Both candidates drew a lot of laughter and Archbishop Edward Egan urged them to keep hold of "whoever is writing your material."

 

Gore also used his time at the podium to answer his critics, jesting, "I never exaggerate. You can ask Tipper or any of my 11 daughters."

 

Among the haves and the have-mores

The Texas governor acknowledged what he said were the vice president's efforts to get the facts right, especially about the Smith dinner.

 

"The other night after our third debate as I was leaving he said, 'I look forward to seeing you at our dinner in New York; meet you at the Carlisle and dress is casual,'" Bush told the crowd dressed in white tie and tails and evening gowns.

 

His jokes included being billed for thousands of dollars by a woman in the elevator who advised him to wear earth-toned clothes. And he said Gore's running mate was such a humanitarian he once gave a donation to a Buddhist temple.

 

Gore denied he was a policy wonk who was too stiff to relax and watch television.

 

"One of my favorite shows is 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' Well, it should really be called "Who Wants to Be After Taxes a $651,430.70 Person?'" noted the vice president. "Of course, that is under my plan. Under Gov. Bush's plan it would be 'Who Wants to Be After Taxes a $701,587.80 Person?'"

 

Bush looked out over the well-dressed audience and declared it an impressive gathering of the "have and have-mores."

 

"Some people call you the elite, I call you my base," he said.

 

Both men poked fun at their own quirks and weaknesses.

 

Gore jokingly crowed about his strategy of using "real people" to illustrate policy points. "Like the woman who's here tonight, whose husband is about to lose his job. She's struggling to get out of public housing and get a job of her own. Hillary Clinton, I want to fight for you!"

 

Cracked the sometimes tongue-tied Bush, "You know what this world needs? It really needs more world leaders named Al Smith."

 

The first lady attended the dinner, as did her rival in her bid for the U.S. Senate, Rep. Rick Lazio. Neither spoke.

NON-NEGATIVE POLITICAL AD FOR RICHARD BARF, CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT 2000

 

Hello, my name is Richard Barf, and I am running for president. I'm a Washington outsider, in fact I am an American outsider, I live in Papua New Guinea. But I have political experience; I ran for president of my high school once in Des Moines where I grew up, and I'm on the school council here. As president, I would get soft money out of politics. In fact, I would eliminate quarters and dimes too, and just allow nickels and pennies for political contributions. And in education, just look at what I've accomplished here in the last two years:

 

1. 50,000 new teachers due to the recent elimination of qualifying tests for teachers!

2. Grade inflation is the highest it's ever been in our country's history!

3. The decline in reading and math skills has reached an all-time low of 5% per year!

 

As president, I would change the schools like I have here. And in health care, I would provide universal health coverage by forcing medical schools to graduate everyone who wants to be a doctor, thereby increasing the number of doctors. My goal would be to have 135 million doctors in the country, so everyone in America would have his or her own personal doctor! The 135 million doctors would care for the other 135 million people, and 67.5 million doctors would take care of the other 67.5 million doctors. All this without a single tax increase! In fact, I would reduce the top income tax rate from 39% to 0.0000002105%, and just increase cigarette taxes to cover it, until we eliminate smoking from the face of the earth with all those billboard ads, and then we'll shift to an alcohol tax, until we eliminate drinking from the face of the earth, but by then it'll be 2008 and I'll be giving my farewell speech.

 

I'm an environmentalist, so much so that I will make it a hate crime to cut down a tree anywhere. And if the tree is planted outside an African-American's house, it will be a double hate crime, and if it's done in the middle of the night, a late double hate crime, and if it's done to a homosexual African-American, a late mate double hate crime. Medical Report: Dr. Michael Michaels

 

Mr. Gore is suffering from several wonderful neuroses caused by conflicting desires. He had a terrific breakdown and is being treated for a moderate depression at Michael Michaels Hospital, of which I am founder, cofounder, president, and vice president. He also has a slight problem in that he has a phobia about being caught in the rain with a large meat-eating grape vine. He's still in the race though, so *tic* vote for him this Novober!

In the life of nations, great turning points and pivotal elections are not always obvious at the time. Circumstances change, politics is full of surprises, history is unpredictable. But for many reasons, November 7, 2000 stands out with unusual clarity as a moment of decision. I am voting for our Republican team, and I urge you to do so as well.

 

We have offered a positive vision of hope, opportunity and common sense reform. We have forthrightly addressed the big issues: education, Social Security, access to quality health care for all Americans, tax relief, and a strong national defense.

 

Our team has not flinched from tough choices.

 

We have campaigned in a spirit of good faith, inclusiveness, and optimism. Our candidates have earned our enthusiastic support.

 

We must, however, guard against apathy. Please be sure you, your family, and your friends and neighbors get out and vote.

 

For a variety of reasons too numerous to discuss here, voter turnout in the United States in recent decades has been low and is declining. In fact, it is likely that barely half of the eligible voters will make the effort to get to the polls on November 7. I ask you to make a special effort to be among them. Don't think for a moment it doesn't matter. It does matter and you have an obligation to vote.

 

We have an extraordinary opportunity on November 7. The Cold War is over, but we need coherent and principled leadership for a rapidly changing world, and a military ready to deter war if possible and win decisively if necessary. We are committed to these principles.

 

At home, the economy is strong and the budget is balanced. A growing surplus provides the means to both cut taxes and finance important reforms. On education, Social Security and health care, our Republican team is right and our opposition is wrong.

 

On the social issues that have divided our nation for so long, we are committed to forge a bi-partisan approach to solving America's problems. We are committed to a future that leaves no one behind. We believe individual liberty is rooted in personal responsibility.

 

The moral dimension of leadership respects the moral and religious foundations of our Republic. We trust the American people to manage their own lives.

What an entertaining experience are we having with the presidential elections in USA. In my view, this experience rehabilitates (partially)the controversy surrounding Levon Ter-Petrosyan's reelection years ago.

Hayemyes, I have voted for Bush, but I think your expectations of the Genocide recognition by Bush or anybody else are exaggerated. That issue doesn't depend on party affiliation. And it would not happen, unless there is no way around it, regardless of who is in the White House, or who leads the Congress. There is no issue of Armenian Genocide in American politics. The recognition of the Genocide by France has nothing to do with the Genocide, but is rather motivated by their reluctance to accept Turkey into EU.
