Guest
Oh gosh...did you have to bring this up...lol I'm joking, of course. I think that as Armenians in this country (the U.S.) we have to make our voices heard. Voting is one way and probably the most practical and accessible. It pains me as a poli sci major and as an Armenian to hear Armenians being dismissive of american politics, of not voting, and even going to such lengths as not becoming naturalized!! It's a little amusing for me to analyze my own political and civic behavior. As you may already know, the decline of political parties in this country has led to the emergence of a large number of swing voters who vote on the issues and sometimes the personalities, but not the party line. Although a registered Republican, I find myself in this group, especially during this election. I'm your classic case of the ambitious 20something year old who's completely disillusioned with the political process. I even considered boycotting the elections in November because of the apparent lack of choice (and I always vote!!). Bush or Gore: how would it matter, right? And then I thought I'd vote for Buchanan ( at least the man stands for something...for all the wrong things, it seems, far too extreme, but you see my point) Pro Bush: he's a republican, enough said..lolPro Gore: decent man, emphasis on education,etc...issues impacting the average joeCon Bush: have you ever looked into the man's eyes?? he'd be a worse liar and cheat than Clinton, and that's saying a lot. In short, don't like his personality. AT ALL. Plus he's an advocate for the rich, and currently, I got no dough...lol..plus he just looks stupid...they coached him on foreign policy thinking he can handle domestic and he fumbles even there!!..ugh!Con Gore: a little too liberal for my taste, represents the establishment, and i'm having real problems believing his "i'm my own man now" spin. Not the most intellectual argument, granted. But CAN there be an intellectual argument for either candidate in this day and age? The lines between politics, showbusiness and business are getting more and more blurry. And I'm sick of it all. Too much politics in my life. Gore is standing tall behind his issue driven campaign; just might work with your average swing voter. And Bush better get his act together. That's all for now, folks Gayane

Guest
I also think of myself as a swing voter. But I swing between the Republicans and the non-voters Normally, I would have leaned towards Libertarians, if they were serious... Some time ago, I thought too that Buchanan may be a formidable candidate. But I don’t think so any more. I think he has demonstrated that he is more of an ideologist, rather than a politician. He doesn’t know where to stop. Seems like he is not perceptive of other views and wouldn’t be able to work with others. And on the issue of free trade and immigration, he is darn wrong, I think. Otherwise, I like his straight talk, and some of his principles. Interesting, I don’t get an impression that Bush would be a worst liar or cheat. To the contrary, I feel he can’t lie, he is not skillful enough. He would be caught immediately. Why do you think he is an advocate for rich? I don’t think rich need advocates in politics. As once Forbes said, no matter what the taxes would be, “he was born blessed” and no policy would make difference to him. I would rather trust a rich President, than one who counts on the Presidency to make his way up. Sure, Bush has been coached in domestic and foreign policies. Who hasn’t been? And he may not be as sharp as Clinton, but they said the same about Reagan. I don’t think he stands for those who are rich, but those who want or have the chance to make it. A priori, I am sure that Gore is after my paycheck. He flip-flaps too much, and is a political opportunist. Has no core values, but is a better campaigner, and has the liberal media behind him. I think Bush indeed may get more accomplished, while Gore will lead towards more deadlock, and even worse partisan politics. I do believe in electing based on personalities. I think politicians do what they have to do. The politicians on Executive level make decisions based on the policies presented to them by their respective departments. As far as the big issues are concerned, it would make no difference even if Nadar wins the elections. On small issues, which make us feel good, they make decisions based on their personalities. Guest
Armenians for Nader310 East Providencia #212Burbank, CA 91502Tel: 818/563-3918Email: armeniansfornader@juno.comContact: Garen Yegparian August 31, 2000 "Armenians For Nader" Formed * Grassroots Group Seeks to Educate Community About Alternatives to "Republocrats" Burbank, CA - Armenians for Nader (AFN) has formed after discussionsamong a diverse group of Armenians interested in best serving theinterests of the community in the US and also Armenia. The creation of the grassroots network was fueled by view held by itsfounders that there is widespread dissatisfaction among Armenians overthe indifferent - often hostile - positions of both major partycandidates and their running mates on Armenian issues. Word of thegroup's founding has drawn interest from Armenians across the nation whobelieve that, behind the campaign rhetoric, there lies the fundamentalreality that the major candidates first and foremost represent thecorporate oil, arms, and trade interests that are inimical to Armenia andArmenians. Ralph Nader, Green Party candidate for President of the United Statesstands strongest on these core issues. Referring to the corporatetakeover of Washington, D.C., he remarked during his nomination speech inColorado that, "The autocratic system of government puts trade overeverything else." "I think Ralph Nader has already powerfully defined the issues in thiscampaign and has had influence on the positions of both major partycandidates," observed Professor Ben H. Bagdikian of UC Berkeley, authorof The Media Monopoly, and a founding member of Armenians for Nader(AFN). In announcing the creation of the group, AFN organizer Garen Yegparianasked Armenians to consider what the following four things had in common:"1) Oil lobbyists supporting Azerbaijan against Armenia, 2) Armsmanufacturers, currying favor with Turkey, pushing to kill ArmenianGenocide resolutions in Congress, 3) Microsoft trying to question theGenocide in its Encarta on-line encyclopedia, and 4) Armenian and otherAmerican citizens feeling politically powerless." "The commondenominator" he responded, "is corporate greed," adding that, "betweennow and the November election we hope to explain to our community how theheartless trade policies of the ruling Republican/Democrat (Republocrat)duopoly not only make their daily lives more difficult, but alsoseriously damage core Armenian concerns." AFN plans to provide information to the community through the Armenianmedia and the net, organize local functions in Armenian communities, andintegrate the efforts of progressive Armenians from coast to coast, especially campus activists. Additional information about AFN can beobtained by emailing to armeniansfornader@juno.com or by calling GarenYegparian at 818/563-3918. Guest
Dear Ararat, I didn't quite follow you. If you were asking how am I related to Nadar -then in no way. I just found the story very entertaining. I am not in any way related to any political, social, etc. organization. I like my high degree of independence. I think the USA provides me with the highest degree of independence I could realistically achieve in any country. I don't think that we as Armenian can ever tilt the US political orientation one or another way. We just can achieve an understanding that we as US citizens/residents are also taxpayers, and like many other taxpayers and contributors to the growth of the US economy, political process, etc, have the moral right to have some expectations from the US towards that other country we love. Also, as one of the members of this forum has mentioned somewhere (forgot who that was), whichever country we move to, we serve them honestly, and don't exploit their system. But maybe I totally misunderstood your comment, and this reply of mine is irrelevant. P.S. Nadar is so far in the left, that I can't take him serious to any degree. But I am not surprised that there are Armenians supporting him. [This message has been edited by MJ (edited September 01, 2000).]

Guest
Originally posted by Gayane: Gayane, I agree that in few precincts Armenians are adequately empowered to make a difference in their respective local elections (for instance, Rogan-Shiff), which is not bad at all. But by making my remarks I meant on the national scale. I think Latinos are or are becoming force on the national scale, though. To the contrary of one of your statements, I think Armenians are recognized to be almost the most organized or better to say, on a proportional level the most effective national unit around the Capitol Hill. I agree with you that there is a good potential to become a noticeable force through assimilation, however contradictory this statement may sound on the onset. I think, though, Armenia and Armenians will benefit more if choosing for the favor of the private sector – corporate America.
Guest
MJ, I have to disagree with a thought of yours that just jumped out at me while reading through your message. You say that we as armenians can never tilt the political orientation in this country. Well, perhaps not on a national level, but on the local level, certainly. I will direct you to the example of the Latinos in this matter. They are now a political force to be dealt with in more than one state. While it's true that Armenians are not quite as numerous nor as well organized, I think there is the potential, as the younger generations grow, acquire an education and become more assimilated, to mobilize our resources and (by becoming more politically active) become a substantial and substantive force in local politics. Guest
FROM THE DESK OF RNC CHAIRMAN JIM NICHOLSON On Tuesday and Wednesday of this week George W. Bush was in California outlining his aggressive agenda to improve our country's education system and to ensure every child knows how to read and write. Accordingly, I wanted to share the Republican Blueprint to Improve America's schools. You can review the blueprint by going to: http://www.educationblueprint.com REPUBLICANS NEED TO MAKE OUR CASE TO EVERY CONCERNED PARENT Fixing what ails our education system remains one of the most important issues in the minds of the American people; over the last eight years the Clinton-Gore Administration has failed to lead on this issue; we, the GOP, have a real plan. We simply need to put our program in front of every mother or father who cares about his or her child's education. The above link takes you to a blueprint that is must reading before the election.please forward this email -"7 Things EVERY PARENT should know"--today, right now, to as many friends, family and especially parents you have in your email directory. YOUR CHANCE TO COMMUNICATE THE GOP MESSAGE As Governor Bush maintains: "All children can learn and no child should be left behind. It does not matter where they live, or how much their parents earn." We now need to make sure no parent is left behind.I have no doubt if people understand the Republican education agenda for greater accountability, teacher testing, an emphasis on reading, etc. they will support the GOP in this election. Parents and voters both want the facts; sending this email with the link to. http://www.educationblueprint.com .to your friends and family is YOUR CHANCE to make this an issue-oriented campaign that we will win! HELP FIGHT THE ONLINE DEMOCRAT DISTORTION GAME We have already seen how the Democrat Party is engaging in a veiled smear campaign on the web: blasting anonymous emails to web users filled with falsehoods about the Bush Record. We NEED YOUR HELP TO COMBAT THESE DISTORTIONS. If each recipient of this message forwards it to 10 friends we will reach over 5 million people-that's the difference between winning and losing on the education issue! Sincerely, Jim Nicholson P.S. THINK OF THIS AS YOUR DUTY AS AN eCHAMPION! I am appealing to you, as part of a select group of eChampions to SPREAD THE WORD about the Republican Education Blueprint by FORWARDING THIS MESSAGE to your own email list today! Please feel free to add a personal message to the top of the message you forward. Let the other parents on your list know how important this issue is to you and the future of our country! ------- DID A FRIEND FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO YOU? ------- As you know, the coming election is projected to be the closest race in 40 years, and the future of our great country literally hangs in the balance.
