Five Armenians Awarded France's Highest Honor

The French Legion of Honor, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802,
is awarded for excellent civil or military conduct.

PARIS, France (A.W.)'Two French-Armenian historians, Anahide Ter
Minassian and Raymond Kevorkian, are among five Armenian recipients of
the French Legion of Honor (Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur),
the highest decoration in France, in 2015.

By decree of French President Francois Hollande dated Dec. 31, 2015,
the Grand Chancellor of the National Order of the Legion of Honour
published the names of the honorees, which also include Professor
Serge Nazarian, and pharmacist and former president of the Armenian
Association for Social Assistance André Yédikardachian.

Armenian-American professor Mark Moogalian, the first passenger to
tackle a gunman aboard an Amsterdam-Paris train on Aug. 21, 2015, was
awarded the Legion of Honor in September 2015.

Anahide Ter Minassian

Ter Minassian, whose work focuses on modern Armenian history, teaches
at l'École des hautes études en sciences sociales (School for Advanced
Studies in the Social Sciences) and the Pantheon-Sorbonne University.
Ter Minassian has published several books about Armenia and the
Armenian Genocide, including La question arménienne (The Armenian
Question) in 1983; 1918-1920-La République d'Arménie (1918-1920-The
Republic of Armenia) in 1989; Histoires croisées: diaspora, Arménie,
Transcaucasie (Intersecting histories: Diaspora, Armenia,
Transcaucasia) in 1997; and Smyrne, la ville oublié: Mémoires d'un
grand port ottoman, 1830-1930 (Smyrna, The Forgotten City: Memories of
a Great Ottoman Port, 1830-1930) in 2006.

Raymond Kevorkian

Kévorkian is a lecturer at the University of Paris VIII:
Vincennes`Saint-Denis, and serves as research director at the French
Institute of Geopolitics (Institut Français de Géopolitique).
Kevorkian is also the director of Paris's Nubarian Library and the
editor of Revue d'Histoire arménienne contemporaine (The Journal of
Contemporary Armenian History). In 2006, Kevorkian published The
Armenian Genocide: A Complete History, the first book on the Armenian
Genocide to make extensive use of the archives of the Nubarian
Library. In 2010, he received the Presidential Award from Armenian
President Serge Sarkisian in recognition of his scholarly work in
Armenian history.

On Sept. 13, 2015, Armenian-American Mark Moogalian, the 51-year-old
Sorbonne professor who was identified by the UK's the Daily Telegraph
as the first passenger to tackle gunman Ayoub El-Khazzani on Aug. 21
aboard an Amsterdam-Paris train, was awarded the French Legion of
Honor by French President Francois Hollande.

bravery by French President Francois Hollande at the Élysée Palace

During the high-speed train ride, Moogalian tackled El-Khazzani, who
was armed with an AK-47 assault rifle. It is reported that he
instinctively acted to protect his wife, Isabella Risacher, and
managed to take the assault rifle away from El-Khazzani. The assailant
drew another gun and shot Moogalian in the neck, revealed the
professor's sister, who was also on the train. Moogalian's heroism,
along with the actions of Americans Alek Skarlatos, Spencer Stone, and
Anthony Sadler, and Briton Chris Norman, helped save many lives.
Skarlatos, Stone, Sadler, and Norman were awarded the Legion of Honor
soon after the attack. Hollande had announced he would award Moogalian
the Legion of Honor once he had recuperated.

The French Legion of Honor, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802,

9-YEAR-OLD ARMENIAN GIRL FROM DILIJAN CREATES COMPUTER GAMES - PHOTOS

To not only play computer games, but also write them yourself - this
is what Anushik Melkonyan, 9, from Armenia's Dilijan town wants and
can do. From the very early age, Anushik watched with great interest
her mother, Narine Danielyan - a mathematician and programmer - work
in front of a computer for hours. Then the girl began creating images
with the photos of her relatives, accompanied by music.

"At school, where she was taught programming from the very first grade,
the teacher was able to skillfully captivate the children even more
by basics of programming." Anushik's mother told Armenian News -
NEWS.am correspondent.

Anushik creates computer games by the Scratch graphic programming
language designed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Learning about the "DigiCode - 2015" Youth Contest of Applied
Programming, Anushik and her Mum hurried to take part in it. Anushik
won the mathematical game in the nomination "Best game" in the age
group of 13 year olds.

The girl is looking forward to "DigiCode - 2016". She has even created
a new mathematical game for it - "Scales." But Anushik didn't stop
here and is now working on the game "Four photos, one word."

Oddly enough, after classes Anushik spends only one hour in front
of the computer. The girl loves days off most of all, since then she
can sit at the computer longer and create new games. On other days,
she goes in for dancing and swimming. Anushik says she has no dreams
but only wishes. And her wish is to achieve greater success in the
area of programming so that one day she can see her games among the
best ones on the page of Scratch. Besides, she wants to take part in
contests and win, become a famous programmer and create works.

Mother of the 9-year-old programmer wants her daughter to graduate from
the Dilijan Central School with honors and enter the international
UWC college of the town. According to her, wide perspectives will
open for her daughter after graduating from that institution.

On New Year, Anushik asked Santa Clause to bring her a box of
plasticine and Lego Robot. The girl urges her peers to believe in
Santa Clause, get good presents from him and enjoy the New Year. To
programmers and herself she wishes new ideas and their successful
implementation.

ARMENIAN PILOT MAKES EMERGENCY LANDING ON CALIFORNIA FREEWAY - VIDEO

KTLA - A single-engine airplane landed safely on the southbound 23
Freeway in the Moorpark area on Monday evening, at times flying just
inches above cars travelling on the crowded freeway.

The fixed-wing single-engine plane came down around 4:37 p.m. in
traffic lanes near Tierra Rejada Road, according to the California
Highway Patrol incident log.

Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration,
described the incident as a "precautionary landing."

"We just had an engine problem," said the pilot Sevak Sargsyan. "The
engine was sputtering and we had to land."

Sargsyan, who is also an instructor, was on a training flight out of
Van Nuys with a student pilot at the time of the incident.

The main concern, Sargsyan said, was the safety of everyone on
the ground.

"I was looking for a spot where I could put the plane down,"
Sargsyan said.

The aircraft made a safe landing and no injuries reported, according
to Capt. Mike Lindbery with the Ventura County Fire Department.

IVAN APRAHAMIAN WINS INTERNATIONAL CHEMISTRY PRIZE

HANOVER (Dartmouth Now) -- Associate Professor of Chemistry Ivan
Aprahamian has won the prestigious Cram Lehn Pedersen (CLP) prize.

The CLP prize, named in honor of the three chemists who shared a 1987
Nobel Prize--Donald J. Cram of the U.S., Jean-Marie Lehn of France,
and Charles J. Pedersen, also of the U.S.-- is sponsored by the Royal
Society of Chemistry journal ChemComm, and recognizes significant,
original and independent work in supramolecular chemistry by emerging
investigators (supramolecular chemists who are within 10 years of
having received their PhD). A supramolecular chemist is one who
creates tools that operate at a level where molecules can recognize
each other, interact, and assemble into larger functional units to
perform novel tasks.

"I am humbled and honored," says Aprahamian. "This is the most
important prize in the field of supramolecular chemistry for someone
at my stage, career-wise. It is also an international recognition
of the excellent research my group members have been doing the past
eight years, and a testimony of their contribution to the advancement
of the field."

Aprahamian is best known for his work on molecular switches. "Among
potential applications, we want to use our light-activated switches
in fine-tuning the efficacy of anticancer drugs," he says. Aprahamian
will be traveling to South Korea in July to give his award lecture
at the 11th International Symposium on Macrocyclic and Supramolecular
Chemistry.

Yerevan /Mediamax/. Australian scientist, Nobel Prize laureate
(Physiology or Medicine) Robin J.Warren stated that he is immensely
impressed by Armenia and Armenian people.

“Armenia is very hospitable, and Armenians are warm-hearted and
welcoming. I am struck by how peaceful Armenians are, while having
such difficult relations with neighbouring countries,” said Australian
scientist during the conversation with journalists at UWC Dilijan
College.

Nobel Prize Laureate noted that he is also very impressed by Armenian cuisine.

“I grew very fond of Armenian dishes. I’m sure that people in Armenia
don’t have to torture themselves with diets, while in my country,
Australia, or in Europe, people eat lots of fast-food. Armenian food
is pure, with no additives. I don’t know how you do it, but don’t let
McDonalds and fast-food enter your country,” said the scientists.

Demonstrators throw away Turkish products as a sign of protest

A group of demonstrators gathered near the Government Building of
Armenia on April 21, as a sign of protest against purchasing Turkish
products. “Say no to Turkish products. Don’t buy Turkish products.
Don’t make the enemy rich,” called the protesters.

“We demand to stop the import and consumption of Turkish products in
Armenia. Buying their products, we equip the armies of our enemy
states,” said organizer of the protest, Tsovinar Kostanyan.

The protesters brought Turkish products and threw them in the garbage
cans, as the policemen didn’t allow them to burn the products in front
of the Government Building.

Another demonstrator, Vardan Vardanyan informed that besides Turkish
there are also Azerbaijani products in the Armenian market, as an
example showing a rake, which had “Baku” inscribed on it.
The protesters handed in a letter written for Prime Minister Hovik
Abrahamyan demanding to stop import and consumption of Turkish
products in Armenia.

TURKISH CAUCUS MEMBER DONNA EDWARDS DEFEATED IN SENATE PRIMARY

Edwards Campaign Funded by Genocide Denial Groups

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Turkish Caucus Member Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-MD) was defeated in Maryland's Democratic Senate primary last night by long-time supporter of Armenian issues, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), reported the Armenian Assembly of America (Assembly).

 

According to OpenSecrets.org, Donna Edwards has received thousands of dollars from Turkish PACs, and was supported by the "Ten Thousand Turks PAC" in her race against Congressman Van Hollen to become the democratic Senatorial candidate to replace outgoing Senator Barbara Mikulksi (D-MD). In fact, the Daily Sabah reported that the Turkish lobby has given over $26,000 to Rep. Edwards in order to defeat Rep. Van Hollen from becoming the successor to Senator Mikulski, noting "Van Hollen is a strong supporter of Armenian and Greek issues whereas Edwards is a member of the Turkish Caucus."

 

Rep. Edwards' campaign also received $2.1 million in PAC support from the founder of a Connecticut-based hedge fund, Donald Sussman, an extraordinary amount of money for an outsider to pump into the race. Sussman was previously married to Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME), who traveled to Turkey in April 2013 and met with former Turkish President Abdullah Gul and other high-ranking officials as part of an eight-member Congressional delegation trip to Turkey, paid by the Turkish Government.

 

In addition to Turkish PAC money, Edwards participated in a Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) funded trip to Turkey in April of 2011, where she attended the Second Annual Turkic American Convention.

 

Last year, the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) and the House Committee on Ethics found that Congressional travel to Azerbaijan and Turkey was "not funded exclusively by the entities disclosed on travel forms submitted to the Committee on Ethics." According to an investigation by USA Today, Turkish groups "secretly funded as many as 200 trips to Turkey for members of Congress and staff since 2008, repeatedly violating House rules and possibly federal law."

 

In a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch, the Assembly asked for further investigation of potential illegal activities from U.S. groups tied to foreign organizations in Turkey and Azerbaijan.

 

Given today's sentencing of former House Speaker Dennis Hastert wherein monies he received from the Turkish government and its domestic shell entities were used to silence his victims and to thwart Congressional legislation on the Armenian Genocide, the Assembly renews its call to the U.S. Department of Justice to thoroughly investigate the corrupting influence of foreign money into the U.S. political system.

Armenian chess player wins at Spain rapid chess championship

championship winning 8 points out of 9 and becoming the winner of the

Mariinsky Theatre soprano Hasmik Grigorian wins Young Female Singer award at International Opera Awards

Soprano of the Mariinsky Theatre Hasmik Grigorian who represents Lithuania, has won the Young Female Singer award at the International Opera Awards ceremony, dubbed as Opera Oscar, held on May 15 at London’s Savoy Theatre, Tass agency reports.

According to the report, the award was a kind of birthday present for Grigorian who turned 35 on May 12. Finalists in this category included Russian soprano singers Ekaterina Bakanova and Aida Garifullina, Golda Schultz and Nozuko Teto of South Africa, and Nadine Sierra of the United States. Grigorian won the Golden Stage Cross Award for the best debut in 2005 and the Golden Stage Cross Award for best performance.

The shortlists for this year’s Awards were selected by the jury chaired by John Alison, editor of Opera magazine and classical music critic with The Daily Telegraph.

The first International Opera Awards ceremony was held in 2013. The key goal of the International Opera Awards is to popularize opera and classical music, the source informs.

First Armenian woman reaches top of Everest

Kharazova became the first Armenian woman to conquer Mount Everest,
Mountain Tourism and Rock-Climbing Federation of Armenia reports.

Kharazova climbed to the highest point on the Earth as a member of a
Russian team headed by Alexandra Abramova, who summited Mount Everest
for the seventh time.

According to Kharazova, the expedition to Everest can’t be compared
with any of her previous trips either in terms of the duration or the
psychological and physical difficulty.

President Sargsyan receives Chairman of the National Bank of Argentina

President Serzh Sargsyan received today the President of the National
Bank of Argentina Carlos Melconian.

The President welcomed the guest to our country and using the
opportunity once again congratulated him on his appointment as
President of the National Bank of Argentina. President Sargsyan wished
Carlos Melconian all the best on that responsible position. The
President of Armenia noted that in Armenia we always respond with joy
and pride to the achievements of our compatriots residing abroad
because their accomplishments bring honor and good reputation to the
entire nation, promoting and deepening also our bilateral relations.
According to the President, in the strengthening of the
Armenian-Argentine high level relations the role of prominent
representatives of the Armenian community is significant and among
them the input of the famous businessman Eduardo Ernekian. Serzh
Sargsyan expressed hope that the visit of the President of the
National Bank of Argentina will contribute to the establishment of a
close cooperation between the banking systems of Armenia and
Argentina.

The interlocutors stressed the importance of such visits which,
according to the parties, give a new impetus to the bilateral
relations and provide a good opportunity to discuss various issues
pertinent to the interstate cooperation.

Carlos Melconian conveyed to the President of Armenia warm greetings
from the President of Argentina Mauricio Macri and his great desire
and readiness to deepen and strengthen the Armenian-Argentine
relations.

At the meeting, the President hailed the significant contribution of
the people and authorities of Argentina to the international
recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

In the context of the bilateral cooperation, the President of Armenia
and President of National Bank of Argentina stressed the importance of
expanding and enhancing the bilateral trade and economic ties. They
concurred that towards that end the National Bank of Argentina can
play a considerable role.

Carlos Melconian noted that the visit to Armenia was important for him
not only from the professional and ceremonial points of view, but also
emotionally since he was visiting the land of his ancestors who at the
beginning of the previous century as a result of the Armenian Genocide
had been forced to find refuge in the distant Argentina. The President
of the National Bank of Argentina spoke with pride about the Armenians
residing in Argentina who, according to Carlos Melconian, enjoy great
respect and influence in the Argentine society.

Armenian university students win seven medals at international
mathematics competition in Bulgaria

YEREVAN, August 9, /ARKA/ Armenian university students won seven
medals at an international mathematics competition in Bulgaria,
Armenia’s ministry of education and science said.

The Armenian team included Yerevan State University (YSU), the
American University of Armenia (AUA) and the Armenian-Russian
University. Albert Gevorgyan and Albert Sahakyan of YSU won gold
medals, Vazgen Mikayelyan won a silver medal, and Avetik Karagulyan
won bronze.

Artyom Kosyan and Levon Stepanian, both AUA students, placed second
and third, with silver and bronze medals, respectively and Hrachya
Kocharyan of the Armenian-Russian University won a bronze medal.

Some 320 students participated in the competition in the city of
Blagoevgrad, from 72 universities across the globe.

The annual competition is organized by University College London and
was first held in Plovdiv, Bulgaria in 1994. -0-

An Armenian weightlifter won silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics on Monday, securing the country’s first medal in the competitions.

Simon Martirosyan (w/c 417kg) won the second place with a 417kg (190+227) result in the snatch and jerk exercise.

Uzbekistan’s Ruslam Norudinov earned the Olympic Champion’s title in the same weight class after raising 237kg in the jerk exercise.

Armenian Greco-Roman wrestler Mihran Arutyunyan lost to Davor Stefanek of Serbia in men’s Greco-Roman 66 kg final and claimed a silver medal at Rio Olympics.

Arutyunyan had earlier beaten Rasul Chunayev of Azerbaijan in the semifinal.

RIO DE JANEIRO—Artur Aleksanyan became the first athlete to win a gold medal for the Armenia team on Tuesday when he beat Cuba’s Yasmany Daniel Lugo Cabrera in the final round of wrestling competition at the Rio Olympics.

While receiving his gold medal Aleksanyan wore a shirt with the image of Robert Abajyan who was killed in Artsakh during the April War.

Fellow wrestler Migran Arutyunyan won a a silver medal.

Earlier on Tuesday, Aleksanyan defeated Turkey’s Cenk Ildem in the semifinals to advance to the finals.

Arutyunyan, 27, competed against Serbian wrestler Davor Stefanek in the finals on Tuesday, receiving Armenia’s second silver medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

He was eligible to compete for gold after defeating Azerbaijan’s Rasul Chunayev in the men’s Greco-Roman 66 kg semifinal.

Simon Martirosyan, 19, won the silver medal in the men’s 105 kg weightlifting competition on August 15 in the 2016 Olympics. He lifted 417 kg, placing second after Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Nurudinov, who won gold lifting 431 kg and setting an Olympic record.

In 2014, Martirosyan won a gold medal at the Summer Youth Olympics and a bronze medal in the 2016 European Weightlifting Championships.

Gor Minasyan won the third silver medal for Armenia at Rio Olympics in men’s +105kg weightlifting with a combined 451 kg.

Ruben Aleksanyan came in forth with a result of 440 kg.

Georgian Lasha Talakhadze won the gold medal with a record 473 kg. His compatriot Irakli Turmanidze cam in third with a result of 448 kg.

The loss by Greco-Roman wrestler Rasul Chunayev, who represented Azerbaijan at the 2016 Summer Olympics that are held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will seem to cause big trouble for him in his country.

Chunayev’s semifinal loss Tuesday against Armenia’s Migran Arutyunyan has become the main topic of discussion in Azerbaijan, according to Haqqin.az news agency of the country.

Azerbaijani users of social networking websites have been divided into two respective camps. Some have severely criticized the Azerbaijani athlete, and these criticisms have often turned into insults, whereas others defended and supported him.

A “very smart” criticizer even suggested signing a letter of demand that the wrestler be stripped of his Azerbaijan citizenship.

In addition, calls have been made toward lynching Rasul Chunayev upon arrival at the airport.
