Armenian team wins seven medals at Youth Olympic Games


YEREVAN, August 28. / ARKA /. Armenia's national team has won seven
medals in five sports in the Second Youth Olympic Games in Chinese
Nanjing.

Armenian athletes have won two gold medals in weightlifting, two
silver medals in shooting and Greco-Roman wrestling and three bronze
medals- one in the boxing and two in wrestling.

The Second Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing took place from 16 to 28 August. -0-

Arsen Julfalakyan wins world champion title in Tashkent

Armenia’s Arsen Julfalakyan won the title of world champion at the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The Armenian wrestler beat Croatia’s Neven Žugaj 4-0 in the finals (75 kg).

PanARMENIAN.Net - A 3-time European Championship winner, Greco-Roman wrestler Artur Aleksanyan (98 kg) brought Armenia another gold medal, beating Germany’s Oliver Hassler at World Championships.

As the wrestler told local media, another personal victory was defeating Iran’s Ghasem Rezaei who he lost to at London Olympics.

“It was hard work, but I won the champion’s title and hope to continue wrestling to fight at the 2020 Olympics,” Alexanyan said.

Coach Gevorg Aleksanyan, the wrestler’s father, was overjoyed at the victory, calling it the happiest moment of his life.

The head coach of Armenian team Levon Julfalakyan was beaming with pride at the major success of this year’s Championships: On September 12, Arsen Julfalakyan won gold in the 75 kg weight class.

Armenian POW Returns Home After Year-Long Azeri Captivity

 

YEREVAN (RFE/RL)–An Armenian soldier who was taken prisoner near Nagorno-Karabakh last year returned to Armenia early on Thursday one month after being released from Azerbaijani custody and deported to a third country.

Hakob Injighulian received a hero’s welcome from his relatives and friends at Yerevan’s Zvartnots airport. The 23-year-old appeared in good health and high spirits. He claimed, though, to have been tortured and intimidated during his yearlong captivity in Azerbaijan.

“It’s great to be back in Armenia,” Injighulian told the press.

Injighulian crossed into Azerbaijani-controlled territory east of Karabakh in disputed circumstances in August 2013. Shortly afterwards he was paraded on Azerbaijani television saying that he surrendered to Azerbaijani forces because of being ill-treated by one of his commanders.

The Armenian military said that the soldier was forced to make such statements under duress. It insisted that he crossed the “line of contact” around Karabakh by accident.

Injighulian confirmed the official Armenian version of his disappearance as he spoke to reporters at Zvartnots. He said he was forced to put on an Azerbaijani army uniform and allege abuse at the hands of his Armenian commanders in his televised appearance.

“There were beatings, humiliation, and verbal abuse. They said that ‘if you don’t do what we want you’ll meet the fate of that shepherd,’” Injighulian said, referring to Manvel Saribekian, a 20-year-old resident of an Armenian border village who was found hanged in an Azerbaijani prison in 2010 just weeks after wandering into Azerbaijan.

According to Injighulian, Azerbaijani military authorities also warned him beforehand against disclosing key details of his treatment to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who repeatedly visited him in custody. He claimed that Azerbaijani officials also threatened to kill him if he asks to be repatriated, rather than sent to a third a country.

“They threatened to shoot me,” the soldier said. “I did all that for the sake of my life. That’s why I’m standing here right now,” he added.

Injighulian was flown from Azerbaijan to Romania in late August. He was reportedly kept in a Romanian refugee camp until returning home.

Just days after Injighulian crossed the Karabakh “line of contact” the Armenian military offered to exchange him for Firuz Farajev, an Azerbaijani soldier detained by Armenian troops on the border with Azerbaijan in July 2012. Farajev was unexpectedly freed and deported to a third country later in August 2013, after the Azerbaijani side turned down the offer.

Throughout Injighulian’s captivity the Armenian authorities repeatedly assured his family that he will not be prosecuted in case of returning home. The former prisoner of war confirmed that he was informed about these assurances.

Injighulian’s current legal status was not immediately clear. There were no uniformed military officials at Zvartnots during his arrival on a transit flight from Moscow.

The freed conscript expressed readiness to complete his two-year military service after undergoing a thorough medical examination. “There were nine months remaining until the end of my military service,” he said. “I want to continue it.”

ARMENIAN SCIENTISTS ESPECIALLY STRONG IN MATH AND PHYSICS - CHILINGAROV

YEREVAN, February 26. /ARKA/. Mathematics and physics are the strengths
of the Armenian science, legendary polar explorer and Hero of the
Soviet Union and Russia Arthur Chilingarov says.

Armenia's National Academy of Sciences is strong and appreciated,
by many world-renowned scientists in particular, Chilingarov said.

According to him, the science, math and physics, is still strong
in Armenia and scientific ties should be developed with the Russian
Academy of Sciences.

"I am saying this as a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy
of Sciences. We will be doing everything, particularly when there
are many Armenians who are renowned scientists and have had great
contribution to scientific development in general," Chilingarov said.

Armenia's Mkrtchyan crowned European Shooting champion

YEREVAN, MARCH 7, ARMENPRESS: The representative of the Republic of
Armenia Lilit Mkrtchyan has won a gold medal at the European Shooting
Championship being held in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Mkrtchyan was
declared the winner of the 10m Running Target Junior Women
competition.
She is a trainee of the Yerevan Children and Youth Sports School of
Shooting, the Armenian Shooting Federation informed, Armenpress
reports.

ARMENIAN TOUR OPERATOR OFFERS SPENDING VACATION IN GREECE INSTEAD OF TURKEY

Muzonidis Travel signed on 12 March an agreement during a meeting held
with representatives of Armenian travel agencies and the director of
Muzonidis Travel. Director of Hot-Tours Mkhitar Melik-Shahnazaryan
mentioned that his organization's goal has been to lure Armenian
tourists towards Greece instead of Turkey since 2010.

"We made a lot of effort to have an impact on Armenians' awareness
so that they choose Greece and spend their vacation in Armenia's
friendly country. Since 2011, we have been organizing charter flights
to Thessaloniki. This year, we have an exclusive opportunity since
we have signed an agreement with Greece's largest Muzenidis Travel,"
Mkhitar Melik-Shahnazaryan said, as "Armenpress" reports.

According to him, more and more people prefer to spend their vacation
in Greece every year. "We have had 30-40 percent growth, and there is
30-40 percent decrease in the number of Armenians traveling to Turkey.

I think it's good for the beginning. There's still a lot of work to

that in Greece Armenian tourists will not only be treated cordially,
but will also be provided with more affordable services.

DOCTOR MAKES A DIFFERENCE

A MISSION to save lives and mentor a young surgeon has seen Dr Raffi
Qasabian finance his own trips to Armenia twice a year for half
a decade.

The Glebe resident is an endovascular surgeon, where he manages a
wide range of conditions that affect blood vessels, including veins
and arteries, to prevent conditions such as strokes and gangrene.

He was born to Armenian parents in Australia, after his grandparents
were displaced, driven into the Syrian desert by the Turks in 1915.

Dr Qasabian, 44, said he was instilled with a strong sense of the
Armenian culture while growing up and finally made his first trip back
there in 2004, where he saw most of the population was extremely poor
and there was a desperate need for outside help.

"When I first went there I expected to be this knight in shining
armour, going to take endovascular treatment to Armenia," he said.

"There are two types of surgery in vascular: there is open surgery,
where we do big, open cuts; and there is endovascular surgery, where
we can do similar things, but through keyhole." Dr Qasabian assumed
they'd have open surgical skills and techniques and they would be
waiting for him "with bated breath" to do endovascular surgery.

"But, boy, was I in for a big shock, because they didn't have open
surgery skills either," he said.

"So I was realising very quickly that actually these people needed
vascular surgery as a service." Sadly people have died while on Dr
Qasabian's waiting list, but he has seen 2000 patients and operated
on 150, while also training Armenian surgeon Eduard Aghiyan, who
helps run the clinic.

"Eduard's dream is to become a vascular surgeon and improve the plight
of vascular surgery in Armenia," he said.

"The real difference will be made when Eduard has his own trainees."

Dr Qasabian said his frequent journeys back to Armenia has also helped
him to get back his roots and connect with his fellow Armenians.

"I get so much out of it - a tremendous sense of satisfaction,"
he said.

Efroni Choir Maya Shavit, the "Little Singers of Armenia" Choir can be
classified as one of the world's best choirs. This is what Maya Shavit

On April 30, the director of Efroni Choir and the "Little Singers of
Armenia" will perform during the concert called "For Love and Life"

dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Centennial and decided to invite
the director of Israel's Efroni Choir, who has been the director of
the world famous choir for the past 40 years. We decided to invite

VENICE — Armenia’s pavilion won the Golden Lion for best national pavilion at the 56th Biennale di Venezia.

“Armenity/Haiyutioun: Contemporary Artists from the Armenian Diaspora” pavilion was located at the Mekhitarist Monastery on the Island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni.

LEVON TOKMAJIAN WON GRAND PRIZE FOR SCULPTURE AT FESTIVAL IN SPAIN

Armenia and sculptor Levon Tokmajian has returned from the festival
held in the Spanish city of Salamanca with a Grand Prize. The festival
was held in early March. During a press conference, Tokmajian told
journalists that Italians mainly organize such events.

Tokmajian said there were participants from Egypt, Germany, Romania and
other countries and that he wasn't expecting to win the Grand Prize.

Armenian WGM Evgeniya Doluhanova has become the Champion of Ukraine
as a member of the team "Law Academy" (Kharkiv) in the country's Team
Championship that was held in Illichivsk.

the next World Women's Championship due to the results she showed at

Armenian team in the lead at White Rook School Chess Tournament

82 teams from Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Israel and Mongolia are taking part in the White Rook School Chess Tournament in Dagomys, Russia.

After five rounds, the Armenian team of Yerevan School No. 55 has scored 15.5 points out of 20 and is the sole leader at the tournament, according to Armchess.am.

Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan became the winner at the
Junior World Championships held in Wroclaw, Poland, the website of

Andranik Karapetyan, 19, lifted a total of 335 kg (155+180), three
kg more than Iran's Ali Miri in the 77 kg weight category.

ARMENIAN SCHOOL STUDENTS SHOW EXCELLENT RESULTS AT INTERNATIONAL PHYSICS, MATHEMATIC OLYMPIADS

Armenian school students showed excellent results at the 56th
International Mathematical Olympiad in Chiang Mai, Thailand, July 4-16.

The Armenian team won one silver and five bronze medals.

At the 46th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Mumbai, India,
July 5-12, the Armenian students won two silver and three bronze
medals. Thus, the Armenian school students won 11 medals, with all
the members of the Armenian mathematics team being winners.

The Armenian teams left the Azerbaijani and Georgian teams behind.

Overall, 577 schools students from 104 countries participated in the
56th International Mathematical Olympiad, and 263 school students from
71 countries participated in the 46th International Physics Olympiad
(IPhO) in Mumbai.

Information science, biology and geography Olympiads are ahead.
