Samvel Gevorgyan from Rio: Someone doesn’t want Migran Arutyunyan to become champion

Samvel Gevorgyan, who is the personal coach of Armenian Olympic Vice Champion of Migran Arutyunyan and the Armenian Greco-Roman wrestling team, spoke with NEWS.am Sportcorrespondent on the biased refereeing in the final of Rio 2016, as a result of which Arutyunyan wad deprived of gold medal.

“Apparently, someone doesn’t want Migran Arutyunyan to become a champion and win titles. An end should be put to this, since sportsmen get disappointed and leave sport. This is already the third time Migran has been marked down - during the European Games, World Championship and in Rio. We must do our best to prevent the recurrence of such cases. Migran’s gold medal was simply stolen.

During the fight, I contested the referees’ decisions twice. I was twice shown a yellow card. We did our best but unfortunately injustice prevailed. We think that in this way the referees tried to “shoot in the eye” of the President of the United World Wrestling Nenad Lalović by ascribing the victory to his compatriot.

Everyone saw that exactly Migran was the real champion. Representatives of different countries were of the same opinion. I think our leadership will take relevant measures,” Gevorgyan said.

Migran Arutynyan fought against Serbian wrestler Davor Štefanek in the final.

Experts offer to apply to Lausanne Court of Arbitration over biased refereeing against Armenian wrestler Mihran Harutyunyan

YEREVAN, AUGUST 22, ARMENPRESS. The unfair refereeing against Armenian wrestler Mihran Harutyunyan at the 31st Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro remains a subject of intense discussions. Lawyer Haykaz Makaryan and political scientist Stepan Safaryan referred to that issue in a press conference. According to Stepan Safaryan the gold medal was snatched not only from Mihran, but the entire Armenian nation and it is necessary to apply to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne with a demand to restore justice.

“As a citizen I think it is quite commendable when a small country manages to achieve such results, but the famous injustice shows that we could have achieved at least 2 gold medals. I have to repeat the words of the sports commentators who qualified the incident as an injustice. The gold medal was snatched not only from Mihran Harutyunyan, but the entire Armenian nation. Our Olympic delegation took no measures to change the situation. The Armenia's National Olympic Committee has to appeal the injustice against Mihran Harutyunyan”, “Armenpress” reports Stepan Safaryan saying.

Lawyer Haykaz Makaryan referred to the announcement of the head of the Russian wrestling federation, Mikhail Mamiashvili, where he had mentioned Mihran would not participate in the Olympic Games if he had wished so. Haykaz Makaryan qualified this announcement as illegal.

“Occupying such a position, he has no right to make such an announcement. Article 23 of the Charter of the Olympic Committee states that an official has no right to make such an announcement. All these are in confrontation with humanitarianism and sports ethics. It is necessary to apply to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne demanding the release of the official”, Haykaz Makaryan said.

Armenia achieved 1 gold and 3 silver medals at the 31st Summer Olympic Games.

Armenia’s Tigran Martirosyan to get the silver medal of Beijing Olympics

The International Weightlifting Federation has declared that as a consequence of the IOC’s reanalyses of samples from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games (IOC – wave 2), the samples of a number of athletes have returned Adverse Analytical Findings.

Gold medal winner in the 85kg weight category Andrey Ribakov of Belarus is among the athletes that failed the doping test. That means Armenia’s Tigran Martirosyan, who had won a bronze medal at Beijing Olympics, will now get the silver.

Martirosyan had lifted a combined 380 kg (177+203).

The Gebeshian: Element named after Armenian gymnast

The Gebeshian- an element performed by Armenian gymnast Houry Gebeshian on uneven bars at Rio Olympics – has been named after her.

The element represents a hecht mount with a 360 degree turn with repulsion off the low bar to the high bar.

In Rio, Gebeshian became the first female gymnast to represent Armenia at an Olympic Games.

In Rio in August, the FIG Technical Committees approved four new elements — two in Men’s and two in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics — to be named for the gymnasts who performed them. All four elements were successfully performed during the 2016 Olympic Games and will be published in their respective Code of Points.

It is a way of achieving immortality in Gymnastics: the gymnast who has an original skill named after them in the Code of Points assures that his or her name will live on in the sport, years after they have taken their final bows on the international stage.

Yesterday in the evening when our Olympians arrived in Yerevan, Nyut.am correspondent could not approach them to find out whether it is true or not. But according to our source, during the Olympic Games when Mihran Harutyunyan and Artur Alexanyan entered the semi-final and it was clear that their competitors are Azerbaijani Raul Cunayev and Turkish Cenk Ildem they sent mediators who offered Mihran and Artur 2.5 million USD each for defeat.

Azerbaijanis wanted to see 2015 world champion Cunayev in the Olympic top, and Turks wanted their representative to become champion.

Naturally, our champions sent the mediators far away and defeated them becoming champions.

Armenian Teens Become World Chess Champions

KHANTY MANSIYSK, Russia—Armenian teenagers Manuel Petrosyan and Haik Martirosyan have won the title in the World Chess Federation’s World Youth Championship in their respective categories.

According to the official FIDE 2016 website, Martirosyan won first place in the boys “Under 16” category, beginning with seven consecutive wins and securing the gold in the final round by beating Tran Minh Thang from Vietnam.

Petrosyan achieved the winning title for the boys “Under 18” category by beating Russian rival Maksim Vavulin for the second time— his first time at the European Championship, then World Championship.

The World Youth U14, U16, U18 Championships 2016 took place in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia and ran from September 20-October 4.

Programmer Hasmik Kalantaryan develops APP for Disney

A group of developers headed by Armenian programmer Hasmik Kalantaryan has created a mobile application for Disney, enabling the visitors of Disney World park to find their ways around the park as well as get information about all the services and facilities with operation times and locations. The APP is currently available, Hamik Kalantaryan’s father Artak Kalantaryan told Panorama.am

To note, Artak Kalantaryan has been one of the first Armenians who worked for number of leading IT companies, Microsoft and Amazon among them. Hasmik Kalantaryan is the granddaughter of renown journalist, writer and publicist Artashes Kalantaryan. Hasmik was born in Yerevan in 1994 and moved to the US with family in 1994.

To remind, last year Panorama.am reported about Hayk Kalantaryan, Hasmik’s brother who had developed “WearSens” device that could help battle obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other problems related to nutrition. The technology that was widely covered in the media sends users an alert if they begin to overeat.

Haik has recently been named the best PhD student at Engineering and Applied Science School at UCLA.

Armenian man's woodworking business to help Utah nonprofits

When Angela Brady and Vahe Zeynalyan first met, it wasn’t because of business, it was due to gophers.

“I’d moved from California to Utah, and rented a home near Angela. Our backyards faced each other, and I had holes in my yard,” Zeynalyan said.

They worked together to figure out the gopher problem and Zeynalyan learned about Brady’s efforts with anti-human trafficking organizations. Brady learned about Zeynalyan’s talent with woodworking, and they decided to combine the two. They created LifeWay Arts; Brady is the marketing and sales and Zeynalyan is the artisan.

With LifeWay Arts, Brady and Zeynalyan partnered to build a business that supported nonprofit organizations. Currently portions of LifeWay Arts profits go to the anti-human trafficking nonprofits Brady works with, but the duo plans to tweak that as business grows.

“Our goal is to have our own nonprofit, and to share our profits with it,” Zeynalyan said.

The nonprofit will still help fight human trafficking, but will be a more Utah-focused charity. Brady said they plan to focus their aid on local youth who are at-risk, homeless or aging out of the foster care system. They hope to eventually employ some of those they help within LifeWay Arts or one of Zeynalyan’s other business ventures — he currently runs four other businesses outside of his partnership with Brady.

“From all of my businesses some money will go to the nonprofit,” Zeynalyan said.

Zeynalyan’s work ethic and motivation comes from his own upbringing. He is originally from Armenia, where he said “you grow up faster.” He earned multiple advanced degrees there, and was an architect. But technology growth felt stagnant there to him, so he applied for a United States green card. He now runs five businesses in the woodworking and robotics industries.

“He’s a genius,” Brady said.

LifeWay Arts started in 2015, and is based in Lindon. It specializes in engraved wooden boxes with a religious focus. Because the predominant religion in Utah is from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, they have multiple product lines that depict LDS temples and scriptures, though Zeynalyan is not LDS.

Zeynalyan is working on a major engraved motif order for Brigham Young University’s Women’s Conference next Spring that displays the conference’s theme in 3D. He and Brady hope to get their products into Deseret Book and other local faith-based retail stores. They also create boxes with religious themes for all Christian faiths, much of which they sell through their Instagram and Etsy accounts.

On a larger scale, Zeynalyan creates intricately carved wooden doors as well — the type one might see in a church, temple, or mansion. He was working on one last week that was already eight feet tall, and that was only one section of the complete three-piece entryway.

The boxes and doors are cut out by CNC machines, and then hand sanded and trimmed by Zeynalyan and his team. His detail is concise down to the smallest hand or face — with some sections that are almost paper thin. One slip of the handheld rotary sander, and the whole piece is ruined. But the complexities and potential of his work is what keeps it interesting for Zeynalyan.

“He is capable of doing intricate work that you don’t see every day. And he’s trying to do something totally different. There’s so much potential for growth. Vahe is so creative himself,” Brady said.

Hollywood star Tom Hanks has called for support to the Children of Armenia Fund gala to be held on December 9, 2016.

In a video message shared on Children of Armenia Fund’s Facebook page the actor said he can’t attend the gala, but urged others to join it.

“I can’t be there, which makes me a fool, because I don’t pass up meals at Cipriani easily,” he joked.

“My great friend, Andrea Martin, who I love dearly, is taking on the spirit of Armenia itself by organizing this great gala,” Hanks added.

“Please join it, please help out, explore your Armenian roots,” the actor said.

Frederick resident Carey White, joined by his father, Rick White, of Texas, and Stewart Essey, of North Carolina, both formerly of Frederick, recently served the Asatyran family in Armenia. They traveled to the Dvin village in the Aravat region in late October to build, play and break bread with local residents for a little over a week.

All three travelers said they were forever changed after the blood, sweat and tears they shared with the Asatyran family.

White, who has been on mission trips to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Sri Lanka and Ghana, didn’t know what to expect going to the first Christian nation in the world.

“The hospitality was unmatched,” he said. “No family has ever treated us with that much soul.”

Based on his interactions with residents and impressions of the culture, he plans on returning to Armenia in 2017.

Verjaluys Asatyran and her two sons, Senik and Bagrat, live in a half-built house started 22 years ago by her husband. After the death of her husband in 2003 and collapse of the Soviet Union, the family was unable to complete the house. They were forced to live in the basement, which is extremely cold (down to minus 30 degrees in the winter).

Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work and partnership with The Fuller Center for Housing Armenia (www.fcharmenia.org), the home is almost complete. The structure is framed, dried in, and almost habitable. The three volunteers spent most of their time sanding and plastering walls. What made their work so meaningful was the opportunity to work alongside their Armenian brothers and sisters. Although there was a language barrier, the smiles, hugs and handshakes said it all.

“Some people are soccer coaches; other are mentors,” Essey said. “That’s fantastic, but God has spoken to several of us by directing us to go to the ends of the Earth to make the world a better place. We are just ordinary brothers trying to make a small difference in this broken world.”

Armenia is roughly the size of Maryland. Of its 3 million people, 26,199 families are homeless. Since the spring of 2008, the Fuller Center for Housing Armenia has supported community development by assisting in building and renovating more than 560 simple homes and advocating for the right to decent shelter as a matter of conscience and action.

GM Vladimir Akopian wins 45th UAE National Day Rapid Chess Tournament



Grandmasters dominate 180-player event at Dubai Chess and Culture Club

Dubai: Former world championship contender Grandmaster (GM) Vladimir
Akopian of Armenia won seven straight games before cruising with
back-to-back draws in the final two rounds to rule 45th UAE National
Day Rapid Chess Tournament over the weekend at the Shaikh Saeed Bin
Hamdan Al Maktoum Hall of the Dubai Chess and Culture Club.

Akopian, a finalist in the 1999 Fide World Chess Championship, scored
eight points to win the tournament, which served as Dubai’s
centerpiece chess event commemorating the 45th founding year of the
UAE.

After seven straight wins, Akopian settled for draws with GM Elmar
Magerramov of Azerbaijan in the eighth round and GM Igors Rausis in
the ninth round.

Mohammad Al Husseini, Executive Director of Dubai Chess and Culture
Club, and International Arbiter (IA) Saeed Yousuf Shakari, the
tournament director and chief arbiter, handed out the championship cup
to Akopian and the Dh5,000 cash prize.

GM Viktor Moskalenko of Spain also scored eight points but dropped to
second place after the tiebreak was applied. Moskalenko lost to
Akopian in the seventh round but bounced back with wins over
International Master (IM) Iva Videnova of Bulgaria and the Philippines
Dennis San Juan in the eighth and ninth round respectively.

Rausis and Magerramov, who defeated IM Njili of Tunisia in the final
round, shared the third and fourth spots with 7.5 points apiece.

GM Walter Arencibia of Cuba occupied fifth place as he led a big group
of players with five points each, which included, in order of ranking,
Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Andjelija Stojanovic of Serbia, Fide Master
(FM) Saeed Ishaq of the UAE, Romany Salah of Egypt, Anusweud Sasikumar
of India, and the Philippines’ FM Antonio Molina and Mark Matutina,
and Ali Rashid Ghanem of the UAE.

Ali Rashid Ghanem and Bashaier Khalil received the special awards as
the best male and female UAE players. IM Sultan Ibrahim and Aisha
Jihad took the awards as the best Dubai players.

Anusweud Sasikumar was the top player in the under-2200 rating
category, while Iran’s Nader Nowroozian picked up the prize in the
under-1800 rating category. A total of Dh22,000 in cash prizes were
awarded to the top eight players and special awardees.

The tournament, Dubai’s centerpiece chess event commemorating the 45th
founding year of the UAE, attracted a multinational field of more than
180 players from 24 countries, including five other grandmasters and
18 titled players.

The nine-round Swiss system event allotted a thinking time of 15
minutes plus five seconds per move. Officiating the tournament were IA
Jamal Qasim of Yemen, IA Walid Abu Obaid of Jordan, IA Augusto Marcel
of the Philippines and the UAE’s Isa Marzouki and Majid Ali Abdouly.

Armenian weightlifters secured two gold, one silver and bronze medals at Junior & U23 European Championships

Junior & U23 European Weightlifting Championships ended in Eilat, Israel with the Armenian athletes winning two gold, one silver and bronze medals.

Rio Olympics vice champion Simon Martirosyan (105kg weight class, coach Ashot Pilosyan) and Davit Hovhannisyan (77kg weight class, coach Rostom Khudanyan) became European champions among juniors.

Armenia’s women’s team member Sona Poghosyan conquered silver in the 75kg weight class (coach Hripsime Khurshudyan), while Samvel Gasparyan (coach Harutyun Yeghoyan), competing in the 94kg weight class, won another silver for Armenia

To note, the Armenia’s Weightlifting team participated in the U20 championship headed by head coach Melik Ghukasyan.

University of Liverpool graduate Roy Khatchadourian, employed at Tim Flynn Architects London office, won the United Kingdom’s oldest and most prestigious award in architectural education.

Roy Khatchadourian received the Dissertation Medal of President’s Medals Student Awards held by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).

President’s Medals are given to promote excellent architectural education, appreciate talent and encourage architectural discussions worldwide.

Roy Khatchadourian’s medal was a reward for his thesis titled “A Juxtaposition of Ideological Expressions: Evaluating the Urban Transformations of Yerevan (Armenia) During 1915-2015”.

Tutored by Lain Jackson, the architect focused on the role of architecture in creating a sense of identity following political oppression in Yerevan.

“What determines our sense of belonging to a territory? How can an identity be maintained, or created? Yerevan – the crown jewel and capital city of Armenia – has been grappling with these issues in a quest of rediscovering its national pride, after years of political oppression, even genocide,” Roy Khatchadourian said.

Analysis of Alexander Tamanyan’s masterplan and its appropriation in various ways over the last century is a key part of Roy Khatchadourian’s dissertation. Apart from exploration of the specifics of Yerevan, his research touches on themes such as collective memory loss, the manipulation of architecture to express political values, the impact of commercialization and city gentrification.

“What struck me was that Tamanyan’s masterplan came out of nowhere. I became interested in what he was trying to achieve in his design and what were his points of reference in creating the masterplan. This plan dictates the future architectural image of the city. His introduction of a new style in the Opera and Government Buildings became the norm for Armenian architecture,” Roy Khatchadourian said.

At the same time he noted that “developments in Yerevan seem to have been promoted to attract touristic interest and financial gains, with the cost of a city with rich history and culture, Tamanyan’s initial vision”.

RIBA President’s Medals are the oldest award of the institute. The award was established in 1836 along with RIBA Gold Medal.

Armenian school opened in Madrid

Armenian Sunday School named after Mesrop Mashtots opened its doors in Madrid, Hayern Aysor Armenian news website reported.

According to the source, Armenian children living in Spain will have the opportunity to preserve the Armenian language and learn about Armenian culture and history.
As the School’s teachers mentioned, the key goal is to teach Armenian children of Spain the Armenian language so that they don’t forget their roots, as well as Armenian language and literature.
The School will also offer Armenian music and painting lessons, as well as Armenian dance lessons, history courses and lessons on the history of the Armenian Church.

The young and devoted teachers introduced the schoolchildren and their parents to the main provisions and principles of the School and assured that they would do everything possible to make the lessons interesting and effective. The School’s administration will also hold various events, meetings, gatherings and field trips.

The Armenia Home Cultural Union of Madrid expresses its special gratitude to the RA Ministry of Diaspora for providing books and textbooks and contributing to activities aimed at preserving the Armenian identity abroad.

The Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in the Kingdom of Spain and the Armenian Holy Apostolic Church of Madrid, have made a great contribution to the establishment of the school.

A student of Istanbul school Ferikey Merametchyan Masis Karan will take part in NASA training.

The Armenian student took part in a competition organized with the assistance of the Turkish educational foundation and received the right to take part in the Astronaut Training Experience.

He will be able to meet NASA's astronauts, to use simulators, to make his own rocket and launch it. He will also make a robot to participate in a competition.

Young Armenian pianist wins international music contest in Italy

The seventh-grade Armenian pianist, Laura Galstyan took the honorable first place at the annual international music contest MELOS in Rome.

Young musicians from France, Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Russia and Moldova also took part in the competition.

According to the chairman of the competition jury, Riccardo Marini, Laura Galstyan's performance stood out with exclusive brilliant technique of playing the piano, as well as taste and artistry. The competition program of the young musician included works by Mozart, Chopin and Rachmaninov.

Armenian dance group wins competition in Germany

On 8 April, the Anoush Armenian Dance Group of the Armenian compatriotic union in Munich participated in a competition for Germany’s qualified dance groups and won the first prize after scoring 90.3 points.

During the folk dances part of the competition, one of the dancers, 15-year-old Meline Hubakh performed a solo dance to Sayat-Nova’s song “Nazani”.

As the dance group’s founding dance instructor and artistic director Anoush Chakhalyan told Hayern Aysor, the dance group won after a tough competition, since all of the dance groups were professional and stood out with their high level of readiness.

“This victory is a great achievement for us, and we are very happy. Of course, we thought we might win, but we weren’t expecting it,” Anoush Chakhalyan stated, adding that foreigners approached her and expressed their admiration of the Armenian dances after the competition.
