The Syrian government and opposition forces have been caught up in

heated clashes in the Armenian village of Yakubie, a spokesperson for

the Armenian Prelacy of Beirut, Zhirayr Reisiyan, told Tert.am.

Clashes are also going on in other Christian villages and their

neighboring regions. The conflicting sides have reported on the great

number of human losses and injured people, as well as material

damages.

Yakubie has two Armenian churches, St. Anna and St, Hripsime, as well

as an Armenian school. There have been unconfirmed reports that a

construction belonging to St. Anna has been seized by the opposition.

The situation in Aleppo, which has a big Armenian community, is

relatively calmer today. The electricity supply has been partially

restored, but the city still faces a shortage of bread. Charity

organizations are said to be distributing foods in the streets to

Shiite Ayatollah Launches Fatwa: Iraqi Christians, Conversion to Islam or Death <http://www.aina.org/news/20121215195232.htm> 001 15-2012-12 Baghdad -- An Advent of light and shadow for Iraq's Christians, who are celebrating the reopening of the cathedral of Baghdad but at the same time subjected to new - and heavy - threats from a radical Shiite Muslim leader. >From studies of a television broadcaster based in Egypt, an Iraqi Ayatollah launches a fatwa against the religious minority on the eve of Christmas: "Conversion to Islam or death." However, strength of faith overcomes the fear of violence as witnessed by celebrations for the "rebirth" of the Syrian Catholic cathedral in the capital, the scene of a bloody attack at the end of October 2010 (see AsiaNews 31/10/2010 Al Qaeda attack on Baghdad church ends in massacre) In an interview last December 13 on Egyptian television Al Baghdadia, the Shiite ayatollah Ahmad Al Hassani Al Baghdadi issued a fatwa against Christians in Iraq. Labeling them as "polytheists" and "friends of the Zionists", the extremist leader stressed that they must choose "or Islam or death," while "their women and girls may legitimately be regarded wives of Muslims." Al Baghdadi is known for his "jihad" positions and for attacking Americans in the past during their presence in the country, and today he lives in Syria, supporting the armed opposition. Catholic sources in the capital tell AsiaNews that it is "a very serious fatwa," but "it is unlikely that people will be upset too much." The government pays "attention" to these proclamations by extremists, however it is possible that such words could "create panic in some areas of the capital," where there are now "very few" Christians. This morning meanwhile Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, presided over the rededication ceremony of the restored Syrian Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The place which reopened yesterday to worship and to the faithful, was the scene October 31, 2010 of a massacre carried out by a group of al Qaeda, which killed about 50 faithful and two priests. During the homily, the cardinal immediately recalled the "testimony offered by many of our brothers and sisters" who "preceded by two young and heroic priests" united forever "their lives to Jesus Christ." He highlighted the "honorable sacrifices" that have allowed the reopening of the cathedral and pointed out that, through the comfort and hope "the Lord encourages Eastern Christians, and especially those of Iraq, to communion and testimony." Bringing the greetings of Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Sandri invoked the Lord, so that "the tears shed in this sacred place, become the good seed of communion and witness and bear much fruit." The Vatican cardinal is in Iraq for a five-day official visit, which began on December 13, in addition to the consecration, Cardinal Sandri took part in the Christmas concert organized for the Year of Faith in the Armenian cathedral in the capital, while over the next days he will visit Kirkuk and Erbil in the north.

And all this when our friends like the US and other so called Christian Europeans are promoting, financing and arming those murderous al-Qaeda. Yesterday's enemies are today's friends?

I hate to see what will happen in Syria when they take over.

Russia eyes Syria evacuation as rebels take Damascus district

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Russia sent warships to the Mediterranean to prepare a potential evacuation of its citizens from Syria, a Russian news agency said on Tuesday, a sign President Bashar al-Assad's key ally is worried about rebel advances now threatening even the capital.

Moscow acted a day after insurgents waging a 21-month-old uprising obtained a possible springboard for a thrust into Damascus by seizing the Yarmouk Palestinian camp, an urban zone just 2 miles from the heart of the city, activists said.

The Syrian opposition has scored significant military and diplomatic gains in recent weeks, capturing several army installations across Syria and securing formal recognition from Western and Arab states for its new coalition.

Despite those rebel successes, bloodshed has been rising with more than 40,000 killed in a movement that began as peaceful street protests but has transformed into civil war.

Assad's pivotal allies have largely stood behind him and Iran, believed to be his main bankroller in the conflict, said there were no signs of Assad was on the verge of being toppled.

"The Syrian army and the state machine are working smoothly," Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said in Moscow on Tuesday.

But Russia, Assad's primary arms supplier, has appeared to waver with contradictory statements over the past week stressing opposition to Assad stepping down and airing concerns about a possible rebel victory.

Russia's Interfax news agency quoted unnamed naval sources on Tuesday as saying that two armed landing craft, a tanker and an escort vessel had left a Baltic port for the Mediterranean Sea. Russia has a naval maintenance base in the Syrian port of Tartus, around 250 km (155 miles) northwest of Damascus.

"They are heading to the Syrian coast to assist in a possible evacuation of Russian citizens ... Preparations for the deployment were carried out in a hurry and were heavily classified," the Russian agency quoted the source as saying.

Assad and his minority Alawite sect retain a solid grip on most of the coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia, where their numbers are high. But the mostly Sunni Muslim rebels now control wide swathes of rural Syria, have seized border zones near Turkey in the north and Iraq to the east, and are pushing hard to advance on Damascus, Assad's fulcrum of power that sits close to the western frontier with Lebanon.

It was not possible to independently verify the Interfax report, which came a day after Russia confirmed that two citizens working in the Latakia province were kidnapped along with an Italian citizen. About 5,3000 Russian citizens are registered with consular authorities in Syria.

YARMOUK A "RED LINE"

In Damascus, activists reported overnight explosions and early morning sniper fire around the Palestinian refugee camp of Yarmouk. The Yarmouk and Palestine refugee "camps" are actually densely populated urban districts home to thousands of impoverished Palestinian refugees and Syrians.

"The rebels control the camp but army forces are gathering in the Palestine camp and snipers can fire in on the southern parts of Yarmouk," rebel spokesman Abu Nidal said by Skype.

"Strategically, this site is very important because it is one of the best doors into central Damascus. The regime normally does not fight to regain areas captured any more because its forces have been drained. But I think they could see Yarmouk as a red line and fight back fiercely."

Syria hosts half a million Palestinian refugees, most living in Yarmouk, descendants of those admitted after the creation of Israel in 1948. Damascus has always cast itself as a champion of the Palestinian struggle, sponsoring several guerrilla factions.

The battle in Yarmouk was one of a series of conflicts on the southern edges of Damascus, as the rebels try to seal off the capital in their campaign to end 42 years of rule over the major Arab state by the Assad family.

Both Assad's government and the rebels have enlisted and armed divided Palestinian factions.

Streams of refugees have fled Yarmouk. Many have headed to central Damascus while hundreds more have crossed into Lebanon.

"We walked out on foot without our belongings until we reached central Damascus. We got in a taxi and drove straight for the border," said 75-year-old Abu Ali, speaking at the Lebanon's Masnaa border crossing.

Abu Ali said around 70 percent of Yarmouk residents had fled and many had slept rough on the streets of Damascus.

MEDICAL SHORTAGES, EXTREME HUNGER

Around 200 people died in Syria on Monday alone, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists across the nation. Violence has risen sharply, and with it humanitarian conditions are deteriorating.

The World Health Organisation said around 100 people were being admitted daily to the main hospital of Damascus and that supplies of medicines and anesthetics were scarce.

It also reported a rise in cases of extreme hunger and malnutrition coming from across Syria, including the insurgent-dominated rural areas outside the capital, where Assad has unleashed warplanes to try to dislodge rebel units.

Aid organizations say fighting has blocked their access into many conflict zones, and residents in rebel-held areas in particular have grappled with severe food and medical shortages.

Fighting raged across Syria on Tuesday, with fighter jets and ground rockets bombarding rebel-controlled eastern suburbs of the capital and army forces shelling a town in Hama province after clashes reignited there over the weekend.

The Syrian government severely restricts media access into the country, making it difficult to report events on the ground.

An news team for the American NBC network who were kidnapped after entering Syria through the rebel-held northern border returned to Turkey on Tuesday after being freed in a gunfight.

NBC chief foreign correspondent Richard Engel said his team was held by an unidentified band for five days, and the men were subjected to psychological torture including mock shootings.

He said he had a "very good idea" who his captors were.

"This was a group known as the shabbiha. This is a government militia. These are people who are loyal to President Bashar Assad," he said on NBC, adding that the kidnappers spoke openly about their allegiance to the Damascus government.

Turkey, NATO Allies Agree On Sites For Patriot Batteries

by RFE/RL

Turkey and its NATO allies have agreed on the locations where Patriot air-defense batteries are to be stationed along the country's border with restive Syria.

A NATO press release said the three countries that have agreed to provide the antimissile batteries -- the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States -- made the decisions together with Turkey following a military assessment.

Germany will deploy at Kahramanmaras; the Netherlands at Adana; and the United States at Gaziantep.

The press release emphasized that the deployment is entirely defensive in nature and it is not part of a no-fly zone or any offensive operation.

Turkey requested the air-defense systems after repeatedly being shelled from Syria and scrambling jets to respond to Syrian warplanes along the border.

Russia and Iran have criticized the deployment as provocative.

Information Minister: There Is Unprecedented Media Escalation Campaign against Syria, Most News Baseless & Untrue

Dec 23, 2012

DAMASCUS, SANA_ Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi said there is an unprecedented media escalation campaign against Syria as most of the news are "baseless and untrue,"

In an open meeting with representatives and correspondents of Arab and foreign mass media and news agencies accredited in Syria on Sunday, al-Zoubi said " We are optimistic that Syria, the state, the nation and the people are going to overcome the crisis and triumph over the foreign aggression,"

" Neither Russia nor any one put pressure on Syria and the Syrian political resolution regarding all political matters is a pure sovereign decision," he said, adding that "there is no change in the Russian position and discourse,"

The Minister said "The national dialogue is a dialogue among the Syrians and with those who believe in dialogue as an entrance to a serious political process; whoever rejected this dialogue and called for the use of arms fears the results of this dialogue,"…

Syrian Truth l Press TV l Syria air defense no nonsense: Russian commander

Dec 23,2012

The air defense system of Syria is capable of repelling potential massive airstrikes against the country, a senior Russian commander says.

“Syria’s air defense system is a no-nonsense force. As a result, no one has ever used serious air combat power against it,” said Russia’s Ground Forces Air Defense commander Major General Alexander Leonov in a Saturday radio interview.

Leonov also stated that the militants in Syria have focused on the Syrian air defense system as a prime target.

On Thursday, Syria’s opposition coalition condemned Russia’s support for the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The West has also been critical of Russia and China for using their veto power at the UN Security Council to block resolutions against the Syrian government.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov denounced Western countries for supporting the militants fighting against the government forces in Syria.

“Our Western colleagues have started dividing terrorists into ‘bad’ and ‘acceptable.’ That is very dangerous,” Lavrov said.

Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil that began in Syria in March 2011. Damascus says the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country.

Syrian Truth l Press TV |Russia says West is losing influence on Syria opposition

Dec 23,2012

Russia says the West has failed to achieve enough control on Syria’s newly formed opposition coalition, warning against the repetition of the military intervention in Libya.

"I think that the Western sponsors of this coalition are already losing their influence on it," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow on Saturday.

The Syrian National Coalition for Revolutionary and Opposition Forces was introduced in November and was soon recognized by Western and Arab governments as well as Turkey as the sole representative of the Syrian people.

Lavrov said he believed the West did not really desire to intervene in the Syrian conflict and that they were even “praying for Russia and China to continue blocking permission for external intervention” in the Arab nation.

“Because if there is such a decision, they will have to act, and no one is ready to act," he stated.

Lavrov reiterated Moscow’s opposition against any foreign intervention in Syria, recalling UN Security Council resolutions that NATO used as a pretext to launch a military action on Libya in 2011.

"We are convinced that the UN Security Council must not take any more ambiguous decisions, after our partners behaved so abominably over the resolution on Libya," he urged.

The West has been critical of Russia and China for using their veto power at the Security Council to block three sanction resolutions aimed at tightening the noose around the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

On Friday, Lavrov denounced Western countries for supporting the militants fighting government forces in Syria. "Our Western colleagues have started dividing terrorists into 'bad' and 'acceptable.' That is very dangerous," he said.

Syria has experienced a deadly unrest that erupted in March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.

Damascus says that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, while numerous reports indicate that a very large number of anti-government militants operating in Syria are foreign nationals.

Syrian Truth l Tunisian Ex Jihadist Tells Tunisian TV Why he Stopped Fighting Alongside the FSA in Syria

This mini-report from Tunisian TV station, Delta TV, shows an interview with a 29-year old Tunisian man who traveled to Syria and fought alongside the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) against the Syrian Army. He explains why he stayed there for slightly over a month and decided to return back to his home country instead of remaining there for Jihad, as is the case with other young Tunisians who were sent to Syria mainly by their imams (clerics).

The interview corroborates some of other eyewitness accounts that accuse the FSA of committing massacres in order to frame the Syrian Army. He also states that no medical treatment was given to any foreign (Arab) Jihadist, which meant that any injury could end up in death. He also acknowledges that these Jihadis are being used as cannon fodder to fight a war by proxy.

Syrian Truth l Al-Manar TV | Lavrov: Assad Unlikely to Step down, Patriot Directed at Iran

Dec 22, 2012

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Syrian resident Bashar al-Assad would not step down, adding that the deployment of Patriot missiles in Turkey directed at Iran.

According to Interfax and Reuters, Lavrov said that "neither side is going to win" the war in Syria, adding that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would not step down even if pressured to do so by Moscow and Beijing.

He said that Moscow has rejected pleas from several unspecified countries to offer Assad asylum if he leaves Syria.

The Russian FM made the comments late on December 21 on his plane while returning from an EU-Russia summit in Brussels.

He also told reporters that the "Western sponsors" of the Syrian opposition are losing control over it.

In a separate interview with Russia Today, Lavrov commented on why NATO was so eager to deploy Patriot missiles on Turkey's border with Syria – and which country was the actual target.

While many analysts say the Patriot system's deployment in Turkey suggests that it could be targeted at Iran, Lavrov confirmed that “the configuration as it is being presented in the media really looks like it could be used against Iran.”

The Russian FM said he believed that West governments, which tend to pursue immediate intervention, have missed many opportunities to actually help end the conflict in Syria. This is as Russia made several bids to find a peaceful solution for the violence, but was undermined by those unwilling to respect the agreements.

“Some of the regional players were suggesting to us: ‘Why don't you tell President Assad to leave? We will arrange for some safe haven for him,’” Lavrov told RT, adding that if indeed those who suggested this had this in mind, they should have taken it directly to Assad.

“Why shall they use us as a postman? If President Assad is interested – this must be discussed directly with him,” he stressed.

Syrian Truth l Press TV l Syrian militants threaten to attack Hama Christians

Dec 22,2012

Militants fighting against the Syrian government have warned two predominantly Christian towns in the central region of Hama, saying they will be attacked if they do not “evict” military forces.

The Saturday warning came in a video titled "Warning mainly to Christian cities in the province of Hama," which was release by the Militant’s London-based mouthpiece, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The footage showed seven rebel fighters armed with Kalashnikovs, issuing an ultimatum to the towns of Mahrada and Sqailbiyeh in Hama.

There are some 1.8 million Christians in Syria, making up about 10 percent of the country's population.

On Friday, a large number of people held a demonstration against militants in the Syrian city of Aleppo, chanting slogans against the armed groups and their foreign backers and accusing them of destabilizing the country.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the turmoil.

The Syrian government has repeatedly said that the chaos is being orchestrated from outside the country, and that a very large number of the militants operating in the country are foreign nationals.

A recent UN report has revealed that militants from 29 countries have so far filtered into Syria to fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, most of whom are extremist Salafists.

Several international human rights organizations have accused the foreign-sponsored insurgents of committing war crimes.

Syrian Truth l FSA Sectarian Terrorists Expel Christians from their Town in the Hauran Region of Syria

This video issued by the Omari Battalion of the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) shows the leader of the brigade of Mahmoud Odeil al-Hariri within the Omari Battalion issuing a statement yesterday, December 20, 2012, asking all Christian residents of the town of Mismiya (?) in the Hauran (Houran) region in southern Syria to leave their town.

This is not the first such incident. In Homs, for example, the FSA forced hundreds of thousands of Christians and other religious minorities to leave their towns, towns that their ancestors have lived in for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years.

This sectarian discriminatory practice by the bigoted and intolerant Wahhabi Salafi FSA is not surprising really as it reflects the rhetoric that these people have employed from the very beginnings of their "peaceful protests", rhetoric that includes phrases such as: "al-Alawiyyeh aal Tabout w al-Masihiyyeh aala Bayrout" (Alawites to the grave, Christians to Beirut)

Syrian Truth l Live Leak l Aleppo Residents are Resisting the Hardships Brought by FSA Terrorism

This report from Aleppo, Syria, shows what the residents there are going through from hardships after the "Free Syrian Army" (FSA) terrorists brought destruction and homelessness to much of Aleppo. FSA terrorists also cut off roads leading to the city center in an effort to prevent any governmental aid and supplies from arriving to the residents who did not welcome them.

Most residents seemed to agree that the most urgent needs are electric power, water, and bread, which are the most basic necessities for livelihood. What these Syrian citizens are also united on is that the FSA is not welcome in their city and that the Syrian Army is what ensures their city's security.

Syrian Truth l Press TV l Iraq militia group warns to target Turkish interests

Dec 27,2012

An Iraqi militia group threatens to target Turkish interests in response to, what it has denounced as, Turkey’s “blatant interference” in Iraq’s internal affairs.

“We refute and denounce the recent comments of the Turkish Prime Minister [Recep Tayyip Erdogan] and consider them a blatant interference in the internal affairs of Iraq,”' Asaib al-Haq said in a statement on Thursday.

Earlier this week, Erdogan accused the Iraqi government of sectarian behavior, warning that Iraq may meet the same fate as Syria.

“Any attempt to rip apart [iraq's national fabric] by playing on sectarianism and spreading the poison of division damages the interests of all, and whoever does this will not be safe from harm,” the militia group said.

The two countries’ relations turned sour last year after Turkey expressed support for fugitive Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi and gave him refuge. Hashemi has been sentenced to death in Iraq over involvement in terrorist activities.

Furthermore, Turkish airstrikes in northern Iraq on Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) bases have angered Iraqi authorities, prompting them to call on Turkish officials to stop attacking the PKK on Iraqi soil.

The PKK has been fighting for an autonomous Kurdish region inside Turkey since the 1980s. The conflict has left tens of thousands of people dead.

Situation in Aleppo

http://www.guardian....mble-spoils-war

In Saif al-Dawla district a commander who was furnishing a new headquarters for his newly formed battalion walked into a school compound with a few of his men.

A group of civilians stood watching in the late afternoon as the men trawled through the school. Burned and torn pictures of Assad lay on the floor. Desks and chairs were upturned and broken, and plastic flowers and students' projects were strewn around.

The men ferried some of the tables, sofas and chairs outside the school and piled them up at the street corner. Computers and monitors followed.

A fighter registered the loot in a big notebook. "We are keeping it safe in a warehouse," he said.

Later in the week I saw the school's sofas and computers sitting comfortably in the commander's new apartment.

'''''''''''''''''''''''

He added: "The problem when people stop fighting – I liberate an area, I need resources and ammunition, so I start looting government properties. When this has finished I turn to looting other properties and I become a thief."

"When the army attacked us last week the unit that was here abandoned their posts and withdrew," he said.
