HyeFedayis
The Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, that were originally compiled on the orders of King Alfred the Great, approximately A.D. 890, and subsequently maintained and added to by generations of anonymous scribes until the middle of the 12th Century starts with this sentence: The island Britain is 800 miles long, and 200 miles broad, and there are in the island five nations; English, Welsh (or British), Scottish, Pictish, and Latin. The first inhabitants were the Britons, who came from ARMENIA, and first peopled Britain southward. For long time researchers of the Chronicle claimed that name Armenia was inadvertently written by the Saxon compiler of the "Chronicle" instead of Armorica, which is an ancient name of Gaul. This is quite implausible explanation due to several reasons: we are talking about people, who started compilation of the chronicles in the 9th century; there is no internet, television or radio, geographical knowledge is rather limited. It's hard to believe that the person by mistake wrote Armenia instead of Armorica, which was much common and more familiar name, than the name of the country located 2000 miles (3200 kilometers) away from England. For the past centuries, it was believed that inhabitants of the British Isles descended from different people: the English are descended from the Angles and the Saxons, who supposedly took over southern England after the Romans decamped. The Scots, Welsh, and Irish have been thought to be the successors of the indigenous Celts. Stephen Oppenheimer, a medical geneticist at the University of Oxford, published a new book The Origins of the British: A Genetic Detective Story. He claims that the historians are wrong in almost every aspect. In Dr. Oppenheimers restoration of events based on Y-chromosome and mtDNA analysis, three-quarters of the ancestors of the modern british arrived on what became the British Isles between 15,000 and 7,500 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, when Britain was still attached to the mainland of Europe. They shared a genetic heritage with the Basques and spoke a language related to Basque language. The British Isles were unpopulated then, the new arrivals in the British Isles found an empty territory. Thus both Britain and Ireland have been inhabited for thousands of years by a single people that have remained in the majority, with only minor additions from later invaders like Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons, Vikings and Normans. But these incursions had little effect on the basic Basque genetic heritage. That heritage is strongest in Ireland, where only 12 percent of the population descends from migrants who came after the Basques. In southern and eastern England, nearer the Continent, the figure is about one third. The Anglo Saxons and the Celts were small immigrant groups. Neither group had much more impact on the British Isles gene pool than the Vikings, the Normans or, indeed, immigrants of the past 50 years, he writes. After the Basques, no single migrant wave contributed more than about five percent of todays genetic mix. So the question comes where Basques originated from? The Basques are unique ethnic group, that inhabit parts of northwestern Spain and southwestern France. There have been several hypothesis regarding origin of those people. But lets refer to the founders of Basque national historiography Esteban de Garibay, Andres de Posa and Baltasar de Echave. All of them considered Armenia as homeland of basques. Esteban de Garibay thought that Iberia was populated by descendants of Tubal, Noah's grandson, who went to Iberia thirty-five years after the Flood subsided. Garibay observed that Basque place-names bore a resemblance to those in ARMENIA. Baltasar de Echave writes: the first settlers arrived to Iberia after the Universal deluge with the children of Noah from ours loved mother country ARMENIA. Interestingly legendary ancestor of the Basques had a name Aitor, which in Armenian means Grandson of Armenian. The Armenian origin of Basques was strongly supported by several prominent researchers, such as Gaspar Eskolano, Edward Spencer Johnson, Joseph Karst, Bernardo Estornes Lasa, Nikolay Marr. In conclusion, there was a genetic study done in different regions of Armenia, that detected that the characteristic genetic code prevalent in Welsh, Basques and Irish, called the Atlantic Modal Haplotype, is also present in Armenian population of Syunik and Karabakh. These are two Armenian provinces predominantly isolated in the mountains, which precluded genetic admixture with neighboring ethnic groups and nations. Read more about that study here. Going back to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles, may be that anonymous writer have been right and Britons in fact originated either directly from Armenia or indirectly trough Basque Country. irlandahay
Ah I can't read Armenian only speak and understand. Hey! its been a while how is everything fedayi? I'v seen this article before and frankly I find it quite stupid. first off, all European peoples have similarities because they all originated from the same place. The britons are a celtic tribe and the celts are descendants of Ireland, from the isle of Ireland, the celts poured down into what is today Scotland, England, Wales, down into France (Gaul), Spain (Iberia), Italy, they even went through Greece and down into the western side of Turkey. The british celts are about extinct by now since the arrival of the saxons, only in the scottish highlands is the real celtic culture still practiced. Unfortunately it is highly unlikely that the Armenians have made it to britain and secured a long line of successors. Another interesting article in Yerevan magazine, I dunno if anyone read it, I'l try to find it and post it, but they are saying that the Basques in Spain are actually descendants of armenians, and they came up with concrete reasons, they even put examples of some 3000 armenians words shared by the basques. they even showed sentences that both basques and armenians could understand. its quite interesting. as for the British, I think its highly unlikely, our culture and languages are just so far apart... hails

Very few of us, be it English, Irish or Armenian that we are all descendants of "Lucy of Kenya" (Please search and find who she is), and that Armenia was one of the first stations on her way of exodus from Africa. For the longest time I have been puzzled as to why we feel the need to invoke the British, The Irish, the Basque, the Gauls (Galatians), and mostly , that drunken idiot Noah to simply justify our very right to exist. Is it not enough that we are ARMENIANS, WE HAVE BEEN SUCH FROM TIMES IMMEMORIAL, that we have our own history, our own heritage, our own culture, our own Alphabet that no other people do.? We came from the planet Mars/Hrat/Հրատ Մոլորակ. Who wrote that History/Schmistory? Hagarag? Or his Hrya ancestor Horenatsi/Moshe Hryanatsi/Khorenatsi? Why is all this obsesion of "where we came from"? That we came from ShangHai or TelAviv! We came from hell, we are in heaven. And every one else can goTO HELL That we came from China, Mongolia, and Aramazt mi Arastseh, from Hryastan. Why is everyione obsessed with "where we came from"? How is; "We came from nowhere. nairi
It seems to me that Armenia was connected with the Bible for a long time. Many people wanted to claim that they were direct descendants of Biblical figures, including Armenians themselves. In South America (I believe in Peru), for instance, the Spaniards wanted to believe that the first inhabitants had come from Armenia, the land of Noah and possibly Eden. It had little to do with the Armenians as a people, as much as it had to do with the land on which they lived, which was considered to be sacred. No surprise then that those who wrote the Chronicles (which were written after the Chritianization of England) wanted to believe that they were directly descended from the Biblical land. The connection with Armenia is thus mythical at most. It's not like anyone can claim that the English today are in fact Armenian, or that Armenians are in fact British.
