Zartonk
I have a proposal: We all know how tedious and time consuming reading this հայերէն can become. So I say that for clarity's sake, we begin typing in Armenian no smaller than this հայերէն which is size 3. I want to know what everyone thinks, and let me say that I will gladly be in charge of modifying 'small' posts in the future.

At times I have to magnify my posts many times to make it legible to people with even a 20/20 eyesight. The reason why, when one "replies" to Johannes will see that he has used multiple magnifications, which at time can be very distractive. Damn it! Can we, one of the smallest people in the world, have a Universal Font, not unlike the English that 5,9999 billion people use? I cringe at the propsect of typing in Unicode-AM, not knowing which letter is where. Add to that the choice of EA and WA WETF that meay mean, phonetic or typewriter. HUH!!! Why do we, a people 8 million max have 10 million different systems? WHERE IS THE "LANGUAGE POLICE"?? !! Edited May 16, 2007 by Arpa

vava
I don't see why you folks have such problems with your keyboards? Have you not tried using the "alt-carriage" key with some of letters to find the "alternate" letter? For example, under my English "E" I get (ե) and with the "alt-car + E" I get (է). Seems to make sense to me. I have the similar cases for the following: English / Key alone / Alt+Key K / կ / ք T / տ / թ P / պ / փ Z / զ / ժ C / ծ / ց Q / ճ / չ J / ձ / ջ And there's also: R / ր / ռ S / ս / շ O / ո / օ I'm not sure if you all have trouble finding letters, once you use the alt key, I see less problems with unicode than the old ASCII fonts. nairi
I can see normal size fonts very well on my computer and two browsers (Firefox and esp. Safari). Size 3 is too big for me.

I think 2 by its size is closer to English default letters size, I think the problem lies with the defeault Armenian fonts you guys are using. Zartonk
Maybe. I just write with XP.
vava
I'm like Nairi - my fonts look too big in size 3. But if y'all agree to using size 3, then I don't have a problem with that. Quebecktsi jan, what font do you use that avoids the problem in XP?

Quebecktsi jan, what font do you use that avoids the problem in XP? I don't write in Armenian, reading gives me headache anyway so I scroll to increase the size of fonts when I read no matter if it is Armenian, English or any language. When I referred to the usage of fonts, I was including myself, most of us probably use the default XP font which is on my screen smaller than the same size in English. It is so small, even though I think Armenian is supposed to be smaller than English (I mean, this is problem I always observe with Armenian texts). I thought it was just me. I am all for it. Though, I never type in Armenian because I can't on this computer. :-(

Sarkis11
Hello, Friends, I see that some people express concerns about Unicode. It is very easy to write with Unicode. You can have any keyboard layout you like, with either KDWIN or the Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator if you are using Windows, or with Ukelele if you are using Mac OS-X . KDWIN is very easy to use and very easy to customize to your liking. I have used all three of them without major problems, and I am not a computer expert. Anyway, the only caveat is that if you want to use Unicode you need Windows 98 Second Edition or later (98 SE, 2000, XP, or Vista) and on the Mac you need OS-X, and I am not sure whether the first version of OS-X can handle it, but I think from 10.2 on it is OK. You cannot use Unicode with System 9 or earlier. The sooner you get used to Unicode, the better it is, so that we end the anarchy and chaos of different font encoding systems that we have in our language. Ashot
I don't know if this has been suggested before but here we go!!! Windows XP: Installing Unicode Armenian Language support (reading Armenian) 1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options. 2. Select the "Language" tab and choose "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)" in the "Supplemental language support" section. 4. Click "OK". 5. You may be asked to insert your Windows XP installation CD. 6. Restart you PC. 7. Now you should be able to read the text above. If you still experience problems don't hesitate to ask for a help at the forum.. Adding Armenian into the list of active languages (writing Armenian) 1. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options 2. Select the "Language" tab in and click on "Details" 3. The "Text services and input languages" dialog box should appear. Click on "Add..." 4. In the "Add Input Languages" dialog box select "Armenian" from the "Input language" drop-down menu and then choose either Armenian Easter or Armenian Western keyboard layouts. 5. Click "OK". I have few fonts that I can send them by e-mail to anyone that needs the fonts, and follow the directions above!!!
