The source of the word Kavat/Գաւաթ (cup)
RemainFaithful replied to RemainFaithful's topic in Language
I am grateful to both of you Arpa and Johannes, for the ample details and various explanations. -
Does anyone know about the source of the word Kavat (գաւաթ in Armenian)? Does it come from the Arabic word kahwat (but since Armenians don't have w, so kahawat became kahvat?)?
-
Yes, I knew Lola and her poetry blog. I didn't know she was Harry's daughter. I don't know about Steve Sim. Any relation with the Armenian Evangelicals? As for the word Presbyterian, the Armenian word is Երիցական. Ժողովական is the word for congregational.
-
William Saroyan's father was an Armenian Presbyterian (evangelical). Although this was surprising to me at first, but then again, there was an Armenian Presbyterian Church already established in the USA in the 1890's. Another person who is famous is Mr. Harry Koundakjian, the famouse photographer in Associated Press, who recently lectured in the "Lsaran" of Aztag newspaper.

Mr. Yervant Kassouny was the Editor in Chief of the Chanaser magazine, the publication of the Union of the Armenian Evangelical Churches in the Near East. Mr. Zaven Messerlian is still the prinicpal of the Armenian Evangelical College. I think he's got a record there! Don't you think so? He has many lovers and supporters all around the world. As for William Saroyan, if I'm not mistaken, he was the speaker at the graduation ceremony of Haigazian University in the 70's. I heard that he was a modest man and talked to everyone. Let me see if I can find the article... Ah, yes, thanking google again, here it is: http://forum.armenianclub.com/showthread.php?t=10836 John Markarian, the first president of Haigazian University (Haigazian College by then), tells the story of Saroyan's stay here in Beirut and Anjar.

Louise, I meant that the name of the website did not change. What changed is the design and the arrangement of the different sections. The interviews are still there. They are found in the Հարցազրոյց sections, on the left column, just "SUB MENU".
-
Johannes, where and what did you read about him. I am interested to read more about him too. Do yo have references or links to articles about him, his life and his work? I know that he has written his memories in his book, which got published. I will tell you the title of his book, if you don't have it.

Sako, camps are great ways to make a difference in the lives of the youth. The time spent together means a lot to the kids and the youth and they return filled with hope and most would want to continue the camp further. The impact of your life and love poured into the life of the armenian kid will leave its mark on you and you will not be able to forget what God was able to do through you. That is a great time to get to know the kids and you can continue to support them afterwards. This is great, I never thought I'd find someone who participates in camps as a couselor -

Gomidas was considered a trouble-maker during his life, but later on after his death, he became a genius. Father Vrtanes Yeznagian wasa considered a trouble-maker during his life, who later on became one of the pillars of the reformers of the Mother Church. I don't know much about Der Vazgen, but he is working and is reaching the youth, who have left the church, their church. It's good to hear that you are serving in your Church, and that you are reaching your fellow armenians in Armenia. -

From what I see in their website is youth who are present in their church, which is seldom seen in the Armenian Apostolic Churches, and the rest of the Churches. But since I'm asking about the Armenian Apostolic Church, I was amazed to see youth in the Church where Der Vazgen serves. What kind of problems did he cause? I don't find anything problematic in creating an organization. Moreover, isn't it like in the Mother Church, where the higher priest can control and perhaps relocate the priest, serving under his parish? I, personally liked his way of going out of the self-serving church ways, and going out into the community and reaching the needy and talking about the problems within the community and church, and working to solve, and reach out to the people, to the youth, to the community. Much of our Churches (catholic, evangelical, apostolic) have become self-serving "organizations", where people go/attend. However, the Church has to come out of its nice and comfy seats and into their communities and reach out. -

Here is an Armenian Apostolic Church, whose pastor is vibrant and preaching about forgiveness, despite of the horors of the Armenian Genocide. I, personally haven't seen such a vibrant armenian apostolic church online, preaching and working with the youth. Does this church give a valid idea about the rest of the armenian apostolic churches, or is this church one of a kind? Here's the link: http://hyeyouth.com/hyeyouth/index.htm -

Thank you Shahan. I would therefore, conclude that you are not eligible to answer my questions regarding the Armenian Apostolic Church on behalf of the Armenian Apostolic Church members. It would be a delight for me, if a member of good knowledge about the Mother Church, would answer some of the issues that came up in this topic's past threads. -
Only Armenian Apostolic Church?
RemainFaithful replied to RemainFaithful's topic in † Armenian Apostolic Church
My questions were not answered. I asked two questions, above, one of which is whether anyone disagrees that the ARF CONTROLS the Cilician Church, and whether the Echmiadzin Church is controlled by another party. The Armenian Apostolic Church has been present way before the gousagtzoutyouns like Hunchag, Tashnag, Ramgavar. The Armenian Apostolic Church has its creed, liturgy, history and books written centuries ago. The Church is not a mere tool serving only for nationalistic purposes. I would like to hear from those who have knowledge about the Mother Church and how they see the Church's role in the community. As much as I know, the Church has not been and cannot be a tool to keep the Armenianness of the people only. It has to be much more than that. Yes it is nationalistic, but it cannot be only nationalistic. If there's someone who can discuss these matters, let's hear it. Otherwise, this topic is not intended only for the discussion of the gousagtzoutyouns, and the blame that each one tries to throw on the "other". Much of what Shahan explained the Church's role to be, I do not accept them as the explanation of the Church. I think that his explanation resembles more of those who are affiliated with any of the three gousagtzoutyouns. This is very gousagtzagan point of view. I would like to hear what a faithful member of the Armenian Apostolic Church would have to say about it. Again, this is very gousagtzagan point of view. A faithful member of the Mother Church would enlighten here. You answered to my question, whether the Armenian Apostolic Church regards the Bible to be holy, like this: Only Symbolically? Shahan are you a member in the Church? Do you attend the Church? Do you know or understand the liturgy of the Church, and how everything is explained by the Church based on the Bible? -

RemainFaithful replied to RemainFaithful's topic in † Armenian Apostolic Church
The Church cannot and should be a tool to divide among its members for political reasons. The Mother Church, agreed to be a national church, should be above the gousagtzagan parties. Unfortunately, in the past, the parties at dispute, whether as a group, or individually did wrong to the Church and many of its members, who were not affiliated with any gousagtzoutyoun, but were committed members of their Church, left the Church afterwards. Many have left the parties, both from Ramgavar and Tashnag, because of their dispute and because they brought their problems into the Church, and then tried to control the Church. The ARF tried to control the Armenian Evangelical Church, but their attempts went in vain. My explanation is that they couldn't get hold of the Armenian Evangelical Church, since the Church is not patriarchical, or heirarchical. Moreover, the Church does not encourage any member in any gousagtzoutyoun to be a member in the Church. Then again, this is my explanation and not based on any source. As for my stand, I support any gousagtzoutyoun with its nationalistic endeavors and many parties AGBU, ARF,... are doing their best to keep their Armenianness. However, I also support separation of Church from any state or political party control. -

RemainFaithful replied to RemainFaithful's topic in † Armenian Apostolic Church
I agree that religion can be used to control. However, political parties also control, as well as governments. There are cases where the ARF controlled the reason of the people and used threats too. If you don't do what they ask of you, you will be disregarded and "excommunicated" from the community. This is not only ARF's case though, but still it doesn't mean it's acceptable. If in the religion, in this case in Christianity, one man is controlling the people, in the ARF's case, there are group of people who are controlling. It's not about the Church or the political party, but who is governing the Church and the party. Both can be used as a means of control. Are you trying to say that the Armenian Apostolic Church does not regard the Bible to be holy? N.B. I asked you a question in my last post in the last paragraph, for which I received no reply. As for your post Sako, when I use the term "Mother Church", I use it as a respect to the Armenian Apostolic Church, which is still the mother Church of the Armenian Evangelical Church, and they do not deny their root, nor their Armenianness. I asked Sako about the functionality of the Armenian Apostolic Church and how it perceives its mission to be. Is it the way Shahan mentioned in the above posts? -

With all the respect to all the different views about the Church, however, much of what you mentioned Shahan, the sources of which I would like to see, unless they're your personal viewpoints. I would be glad if someone would explain about the Armenian Apostolic Church's stand and how the Church perceives itself to function. I'm hesitant to say that it functions the way Shahan mentioned above. Shahan you say: "We have our own holy book" Which holy book? There's only one holy book, which is the Bible. I'm not sure there is another one. The rest are books by the Fathers of the Mother Church. Then again, I didn't mention about heaven existing or not. And as a side note, the Jehovah's Witnesses say that there is neither heaven nor hell. Heaven and hell are here on earth. As for "Forgiving and Reconciliation", Here's a recent story regarding the Church and priesthood: "The hardest thing to do if you have been victimized is to forgive those who have victimized you and your family. But that is what is happening as an Armenian priest, Father Vazken Movsesian, and a Rwandan pastor, Benjamin Kayumba, have joined together to preach a message of forgiveness." Source -> LA TIMES But coming back to the issue of ARF controlling the Mother Church, we see that there are different positions and attitudes that is hard to reconcile. The ARF has a stand and the Church has another stand. Which one should have the last say? Should only one of them have the last say, or can both have their stand, without being labeled as traitor or a lesser Armenian? -

RemainFaithful replied to RemainFaithful's topic in † Armenian Apostolic Church
Here's my question: What is the agenda of the Church? If the agenda of the Church is based on the Bible, do you think that the agendas of any political political, in this case the ARF, would coincide and complement with that of the Bible's? Then again, how much sanctification/spirituality/Christendom does the ARF encourage among the people? The Church believes in and preaches humility, humbleness, perseverance, being kind and meek; forgiving and loving your enemy. Does the ARF encourage these characteristics among its members? Where do the ARF's and the Church's agendas complement each other and where do they depart? -
Only Armenian Apostolic Church?
RemainFaithful replied to RemainFaithful's topic in † Armenian Apostolic Church
The ARF was not able to control the Armenian Evangelical Church, which still remains at an equal distance from all the Armenian political parties, mainly the Hnchagians, the Tashnags and the Ramgavars. And yes, the Armenian Evangelical Church or any other person can be azkayin and be independant without adhering to any political party. I know of a group in Australia, which is promoting Armenian culture and values, without being affiliated to any political agendas. The issue of the Church is that it cannot and should not be governed by the ARF. Yes, there can be a cooperation in keeping the Armenian communities, which I'm sure almost all the Armenian denominations (Apostolic, Catholic, Evangelical) are trying to keep. But keeping the Armenian community together is not the sole purpose of the Church. The Church cannot and should not side with this party against that, or else it would be discriminating and dividing, rather than joining the community. The Church is not the building only! The Church is the group of believers who come together to worship Christ. The Church is not only a social/sport organization, like any other HMEM, HMM organizations. Christ is the head of the Church and all those who believe and work for Him are His people. The Church (i.e. the believers) has a commandment to love.
