I've accompanied an Armenian church choir on numerous occasions, so I know more than enough how they sing the liturgy. However, most Armenian church choirs here are very unprofessional. They don't get paid so therefore they never get together to rehearse during the week. They only meet once a week and sing together. It's a pity that their singing resembles that of mugham singing. But it's not mugham. I completely agree with my Armenian music history teacher in regards to the lack of well-trained and well-advised Armenian musicians, especially in churches. If a non-Armenian is interested to hear Armenian liturgical music, there is nowhere in this big diaspora where one can recommend to hear our great, unique sacred music. Even from a musicological perspective, Armenian music and singing style has always leaned to that of the West. I don't know much about mugham, but this seems to be correct information about mugham. At least the part about the microtones. "Free meter and microtonal, with the octave divided up into 84 potential divisions, mugham is guided by 'rules' that allow for its perpetual renewal and further evolution in nuance. As 'trance' music, the melodies composing mugham must remain true to the chosen scale..." Armenian music has its own distinctive scales, but the scales have a division of only six or seven tones.
