As for me, Yerevan is not recognizable. I'm pretty sure that if I went back I'll be feeling like I'm in a different city. It's changed a great deal but it is more modernalized.

That's true , I agree , and I would love to go and see the changes..

Yup! Yerevan's "getron" is developing and getting better day after day. You would be surprised to know which Armenian city comes second to Yerevan in being clean, ordered, having nice roads, and leaving an overall positive impression on the visitor!

... It's Stepanakert! It may even be cleaner than Yerevan.

Of course, they are not in the same category and therefore comparisons are useless.

Yerevan looks like construction site

Watch the above video again.

Do you see what I see?

Watch it again.

The people featured are all 16-18 year olds.

Watch it again.

Do you see any 80 year olds, people in wheelchairs, people walking with the aid of canes and walkers or other aids?

Why is every building in Yerevan, be they new or old built several meters above ground level?

Is there a reason for that. Is it so mice and rats don’t enter? Except that , mice and rats can climb those steps where as, in the case of the above our most church oriented citizens cannot.

Look what I wrote some tome ago.

It is no different than parents chiding their children and correcting them in hopes that they will grow up to be strong and beautiful. Present Yerevan is the fifth version, in the least From Erebuni to the dusty village of 1900, the Capital of First Republic, the capital of SSRA, and now the capital the Independent RA. Yerevan has been born and reborn numerous times, and each an every time it has become more beautiful, yet, even so it is still a newborn, a beautiful healthy baby and getting healthier and more beautiful every day. However, just as any newborn baby it does need some nurturing, guidance and, if necessary .. Correction before it grows to be a deformed adult .

Many of those beautiful public and private buildings in Yerevan were built during another era. Yerevan is not unique in that respect. During those days even buildings in America were built solely architectural and esthetic values in mind. I know of at least two Armenian churches here that were originally built dozens of steps above street level, they may have been built when the congregation was relatively younger, and now they had to spend thousands of dollars to install interior or exterior elevators to accommodate the aging and handicapped congregation. This is a new phenomenon. Not only the population is living longer and needing assistance in moving around, we also have the voice of minorities, among which the handicapped. Mind you, I am not YET, I climbed all the steps and hills, but as mentioned in Sayter-Mayter we also had people in our entourage who could not. Hopefully, some day, you and I will reach that age.

Yerevan has developed faster than any others. Whereas it took the world and America to get where they are, it took less than 15 years for Yerevan to go from donkey carts to limousines, from vochilot pandoks to luxury hotels, from pencil written notes to the internet e-mail….so on and so forth. Then why is it that we have hamburger joints and pizza houses in Yerevan, all copied from America yet we cannot copy some of the other innovations like handicap and easy accessible buildings which is the law here, specially for public buildings. Why is it that we are quick to copy and imitate all the vulgarities, not limited to such as so called music known as Rap, yet we fail to see and imitate some of the more noble aspects of the west.

SHUT ME UP!

I can go on and on , yet as above, all this outpouring is out of love, not hate.

PS. We do realize that the majority of tourists, not only Armenian Diasporans, but tourists in general are over the age of 18, like closer to 80!!!

I'm probably going to get attacked for this, but if it weren't for the Ararat view, I'd pick Tbilisi over Yerevan in a heartbeat. Tbilisi was the center of the Caucasus during the Czarist period (and probably had more Armenians than Georgians or Russians) so it has some excellent historical architecture. I also like its cathedral. Yerevan's Saint Gregory looks misplaced amidst such Soviet buildings and surroundings.

Keep in mind I'm referring to aesthetics here.

Arpa I did not notice other staff but I think the reason of buildings beeing couple of foots higher the ground level is for flood protection reasons probably.
