GENOCIDE MEMORIAL DOWNTOWN LYON

French President Expected to Take Part

With Turkey’s bid for the EU in mind, the Armenian community of Europe has launched arrangements to commemorate the 91st anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The French city of Lyon will host the main event: erection of the Armenian Genocide Memorial in the central square.

Lyon will become the first city with an Armenian Genocide Memorial in the central square. French officials will also be present at the unveiling ceremony. Hilda Chobanian from the Hye Dat European Office informs that President Jacques Chirac of France is also expected to be present. The French-Armenians are looking forward to see the president condemning the Armenian Genocide alongside the new memorial.

In order to put up the memorial the Armenian community of France created a committee two years ago that managed to get the consent of Lyon mayor for a memorial site.

Hilda Chobanian also informed that a memorial will be erected in a Marseilles borough too, and numerous arrangements will be held in Sweden, Norway, Italy, Germany and all over Eastern Europe.

MEMORIAL TO ARMENIAN GENOCIDE VICTIMS PROFANED IN LYON

*

Seven days before the commemorations of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, the steles of the Armenian Memorial set up in the town of Lyon (France), which must be inaugurated by President Jacques Chirac, were profaned with inscriptions of insults and negationists: "There never was genocide of the Armenians". This act of vandalism followed upon the consecutive racist drifts with the ultra nationalist Turkish demonstration of last 18 March. Armenian associations and organizations (CCAF - CDCA) call the authorities of Police force to seek and sanction the persons in charge for these intolerable attacks to human dignity.

The Prime Minister of Canada Recognizes the Armenian Genocide

Ottawa - The Prime Minister of Canada, the Right Honourable Stephen

Harper, made a clear statement recognizing the historical fact of

the Armenian Genocide.

In response to a reporter's question regarding the Armenian Genocide,

the Prime Minister said: "That was a vote held in the last Parliament

[Motion M-380 - April 21, 2004]. As you recall, Parliament passed that

resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide. Our party supported that

resolution and we continue to recognize that parliamentary resolution".

Dr. Vagharch Ehramdjian, Chairman of the Armenian National Committee

of Canada (ANCC), thanked the Prime Minister Harper, on behalf of

the Canadian Armenian Community, for his historic statement. "The

Right Honorable Stephen Harper's principled and righteous stand in

recognizing the Armenian Genocide will finally bring closure to the

Canadian-Armenian Community," said the Chairman of the ANCC.

Good, now he can retire..., he can do everything he want he won't have my vote.

Funny you mention about voting for him.

I asked a friend yesterday as a joke, if he would vote for Harper now that he stood by his pre-election stance n the Armenian Genocide, he said "nnnnnnnnnnneh" and added being a Quebecer (I don't mean you Q :P) and voting for Harper is a contradiction, we have too much Quebec in us to vote for an Albertan.

But I must say that with his courageous statement he surely gave the Liberals a lesson on honesty and integrity, and that alone can sway some Armenians to vote for the Conservatives next time round.

Why not, he might convince the American president to follow suit. Plus he might prove to be a capable Prime Minister, already he forced Alberta to withdraw allowing doctors to work within and outside the Medicare system.

Come one Zareh - most of the opposition (apart form the Liberal ministers) was from his ultra-conservative reform party - think of Maurice Velacotte:

Also in 2002, Vellacott was the only MP to speak against a parliamentary motion recognizing an Armenian genocide as having occurred in 1915. He was quoted as saying:

What the Turks so strenuously object to is the Armenian activists' one-sided portrayal of the tragic events to the world community and labelling them as genocide, using, in some cases, distortion or exaggeration of facts to further their political agenda of obtaining money and land from Turkey. While doing so, Armenians ignore the death and massacre of more than twice as many Turks at the hands of the Armenian revolutionary bands and the Russians whom they were helping during the First World War.[30]

His comments were commended by some Turkish-Canadian groups, and criticized by some Armenian-Canadians.[31]

The Canadian Alliance merged with the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada in 2003-04 to create the Conservative Party of Canada. Vellacott supported the merger, and endorsed Stephen Harper's successful campaign for the new party's leadership.[32]

Let's not get too friendly with the conservatives just yet.....

/PanARMENIAN.Net/ The monument to the Armenian Genocide victims that was desecrated in Lyons assumed its former appearance. Besides, the city authorities placed video cameras thanks to which the situation around the monument is always kept under control.

As it was reported earlier, French Minister of interior Nicholas Sarkozy condemned the desecration of the monument and said the criminals should be found and punished.

Official unveiling of the ceremony will take place April 24. The French President is expected to attend the event, reported Hurriyet Turkish newspaper.

Has anyone spotted anything on BBC or CNN?

I did last year, but can't find anything now.

Of course not! See why.

There ought to be a law!

Once again we have been hijacked, eclipsed, obscured and superseded.

As we speak, the world media is rife with news about the commemoration of the holocaust/molocaust.

Today is April 25, when the entire week has been set aside for the memory of the Genocide, another people has once again taken the bite out of it.

Of all the 365 days and 52 weeks of the year was it absolutely necessary to superimpose their “history” over ours? Is it necessary to eclipse our Christmas with another imagined and manufactured so called holiday. Is it necessary to obscure our Easter with yet another manufactured and debatable piece of so called “historical event”??

WE have been observing April 24th as a day of remembrance for all these years, many years before that other calamity occurred. Yet, of all the 365 days in the year it had to be superimposed on top of ours.

There ought to be law!!
