ATTEMPT TO DISHONOR ARMENIANS?

The following is some information about A&E's popular "Flight 93" made-for-TV movie, which premiered on Monday evening, January 30th. It was shown again on Tuesday and Wednesday evening (Jan. 31 & Feb. 1) at 9:00 pm and will be shown again until Feb. 8, 2006. See schedule at: (http://www.aetv.com/listings/episode_details.do?episodeid=111946 , and general information at: (http://www.aetv.com/flight_93/index.jsp).

The Monday premier drew a record 5.9 million viewers, clearly the most-watched program on this station ever since it came into existence in 1984 (see the following link -- http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060201/ap_en_tv/tv9_11_movie)

While the movie is based on actual public records (interviews, documents, research, etc.), including phone conversations between passengers and their loved ones, there is no doubt that the directors, screenwriters and producers of the film are responsible for the diction articulated by the actors throughout the film. Four-time Emmy nominee David Gerber, a veteran of more than 50 made-for-TV movies and dramas, is the executive producer of the movie, with a screenplay by Nevin Schreiner. Peter Markle is the director of the film. Fox Television Studios partnered with the A&E Network to realize the airing of this film.

About 45 minutes into the film, one of the male passengers on board Flight 93 (specifically, Jeremy Glick) is speaking to his wife via his cellular phone. Upon describing the hijackers to his wife, the male passenger says the following (I paraphrase): "...they look like they're from the Middle East, maybe Armenian" (he pronounces it 'Ar-may-knee-un').

We could not believe what we heard and confirmed with one another if we heard accurately. While the film is quite moving and riveting, I could not help but inform you about this incident. While it may not seem to be a high priority, let's not lose sight of the fact that over 5.9 million viewers tuned in on Monday, and I am sure that a sizable viewership watched the movie on Tuesday, and will continue to watch it tonight and throughout the week. I intend to watch and transcribe the movie tonight. It may be worth the time and effort to request a transcript from A&E to confirm whether or not our nation was mentioned in the movie in such a pejorative way. A number of Armenian-Americans, including my first cousin, serve in the U.S. military and are stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan today. In addition, as we all know, Armenia has been a genuine partner of the United States in the "war on terror." As you know, Armenia provides peacekeeping troops to the coalition forces in Iraq, as well as in Kosovo. Armenia has allowed its air space to be used for overflights to and from Afghanistan for the past five years. The producers of this TV movie do a disservice to our nation by alluding or even hinting that the hijackers could be "Armenian." It seems to me that the mainstream film industry, like the U.S. Justice Department (remember what Ashcroft did a few years ago?), enjoys "throwing in" the name of our nation among the ranks of terror groups/terrorists for reasons of political correctness and expediency. For the sake of not being accused as anti-Muslim or anti-Arab, pundits and mainstream filmmakers/TV show producers alike enjoy abusing the name of our nation in order to fend off potential criticism. Shame on them for thinking in such a way, let alone committing such heinous defamation against our people. Once again, I think it would be worth the effort to obtain a copy of the transcript from A&E, and at the every least videotape "Flight 93."

Thank you for your consideration of this request,

I once held a subscription to the A&E magazine. I wrote a letter to them after an article appeared in that magazine which discussed Mount Ararat, mentioning all the peoples in the vicinity of that mountain except Armenians. They never responded and I cancelled my subscription. The top-dogs at A&E are jaded against Armenians. I wonder who is running that organization?

The mainstream media is EXTREMELY "dumb" when it comes to minority cultures or simply minorities. I have a very close Black friend from college, sometimes when we sit to watch TV together, he starts pointing out to me "the very apparent to all the Black folks" the racist-generalist-stupid comments that the White majority STILL includes in their so-called scripts.

Let's be honest, how many of us have relatives or friends who say things like "All black people are rappers!" I don't know many Blacks who

dance like a clown or use weird jargon when they are conversing with me, nonetheless all the shows with Blacks in them, always portray them as "happy clown like". Even if the person has a medical degree from Harvard, that person still talks in Ebonics. I guess because all Black people do! - said a very arogant white scriptwriter.

anyways my rant should have a point I guess ;) Things of that nature need to be pinpointed to the screenwriter and the channel execs, so they know that they can't just throw words in their films as they wish.

Let us all thank the hypocrite media monkeys, an ignorant public and our fellow Armenians who proudley blast Arabic tunes and argue against all things non-Middle Eastern that aren't "the way WE are" to get attention and appear different.

Skhara,

We rarely agree, but I am 100% in agreement with you on that one.

The A&E CEO was raised in Queens, New York. She is the top dog there and knows all about the real Armenians who lived there during her formative years. There was little Middle-Eastern about them. This is a deliberate slur. It all has to do with Turkey.

gams,

There is defenite malicious intent here lack of geographic knowlege has nothing to do with it.

Oh come on, I agree with kakachik77, also given that most in the US could not place most of the nations on a map, who the hell cares that ignorants mistaken Armenians for Mujaidins. :D

BTW, does anyone know when that Turkish movie about American soldiers will be on the Box officice with a translation? I will definitly go to watch it. I guess those Turks and I injoy the same kind of movies. :P

There was a ABC news poll some time ago, they asked high school kids questions concerning the US.

Ted Kopple reported that overwhelming majority named New York as the capital of the US, and out of the 40% who answered Wash. DC as the capital, 20% of them could not locate Washington DC on a US map.

there were other incredible results about geography in general but I forget the details, not knowing where Cuba was for example.

So if they confuse Armenian with an Arab is not surprising. But I would have thought that a script writer would be a bit more intelligent, so who knows maybe it was done intentionally???

more important than that (a TV show) is how Armenians will advance in all fields of culture/business/politics and be a powerful asset for Armenia's interests by calling the shots themselves.

This whole thing sounds like cluck-cluck. It is a game of chicken, as in coward.

I am sure in the original script another people whose name begins with AR was actually mentioned, realizing that it would be too incendiary, they must have opened the Who’s Who of terrorism and picked the people/name that began with the letters A and R. Besides, they may have Turkish consultants on their staff as well, or at least people who would be glad to give the Turks a boost at the expense of Armenians.

Surprisingly, I find myself agreeing 100% with another one of my antagonists, namely Arpa (see bolded

section of Arpa's comments belows).
