Armen
The underlying "value" is pride. They can't back down, because they will lose face, and they invite further bullying in the future. Not because the low-margin business of fishing or deep-sea mining is so critical to their existence. This is a pretty archaic interpretation. Right now in the issue of the Kurilian islands between Japan and Russia it is becoming more and more evident that Japan uses the issue to extract more concession from Russia on the oil pipeline project from Siberia to Pacific coast of Russia. Japan is inclining towards an agreement that would leave 60% of the islands to Russia. This means that the Japanese side does not value its "pride" that high and certainly it is taking into account the public opinion on this. Those 40% of islands are important for fisheries, which are critical for Japanese food business are not a low-margin business taking into account that Japanese ships would go into extreems and often cross to the Russian side following the fish in certain seasonal periods. "Pride" plays lesser role. Many countires give away a part of their sovereignity (which can be considered as losing face by some part of the population) to enter regional organisations. For example, recently Estonia stopped its claims on Pskov region in Russia to be able to enter the EU without territorial problems. On the other hand Estonia did what it could to stop Russia from building the gaz pipeline to Germany bypassing the Baltics. So, as the the processes of regionalisation are intensifiying countires are willing to go with what they have at present in terms of territory and even drop their claims to acquire stability. This means that they value the pride pegged to territory less. Not without a quasi-genocidal campaign first. style_images/master/snapback.png Anyway it did not have an infinite value as you claimed. In case of European countires it has lesser value because the processes of integation are more intense.
Anahit
.. that is if they ratify Sevres treaty! style_images/master/snapback.png Can this be taken to the international court?
Twilight Bark
Anyway it did not have an infinite value as you claimed. I said "near-infinite". And the rest of your post simply confirms that even useless land has huge cache. "Real" land is pretty much non-negotiable. And trading sovereignty for economic or diplomatic advantage is as old as history. Nothing new about it. And we were not discussing the degrees or limitations of "sovereignty". skhara
3. The Tehran-Bajing-Moscow-Yerevan quartet I remember reading this, but I have doubts over this particular formation. Where is New Delhi in this equation? If you look back in history, India has always been a main focuse of Russia's interest. Imperialist Russia, The Soviet Union, and todays Russian Federation. Russia has maintained a really great relationship India throughtout history On the other hand Pakistan is traditional enemy of Russia so that only emphasises the fact that Russia will continue to concentrate on India and start concentrating more on Iran to squeeze Pakistan which is currently in the American-Zionist 'sphere'. Also, Russia is very concerned about China. China is 'spilling over' and Russia has a lot of 'empty' space, so that makes India an even greater priority because it helps to divert China's interest south, and if worst comes to worst, Russia may need to use India as an ally. So New Delhi has to fit in there somehow.
skhara
You want land back, increase your population and let it spill over into your neighbor’s backyard. Sure that's what the Turks had done to us. Simly outbred us, and they, in fact, continue to do so. It is part of their culture to breed. And not only them, but all the muslim peoples. Notice the Chechens, Azeris, Albanians, etc..... That's easy to state, but how on earth are we going to change the whole national mentality? My father told me of a neighbor they had who was Azeri turk. This guy was bringing up 8 little monsters. Apparently he beat the hell out of the oldest one especially, and hardly knew their names.
