    Hrant Dink

On January 19, first anniversary of assassination of the Armenian journalist Hrant Dink, the Mayor of the Lyon, Mr. Gerard Collomb, inaugurated the street after Hrant Dink, in homage to the courage of this man of peace, independent correspondent Jean Eckian reports from France. Joined together near Le Progres newspaper, several personalities followed one another at the microphone to evoke the course of the journalist and read a letter of thanks of AGOS. Pasteur Rene Leonian, a friend of the Dink family who had specially come from Armenia, conveyed the thanks of Rakel Dink. Among the guests was the Consul General of Turkey, Ismail Hakka Musa, surrounded with body guards, precipitately left the meeting after having criticized certain speakers who referred to the "events" of 1915. The Mayor of Yerevan is too busy to be thinking about something similar.

    Sirusho

In November last year, ARMTV already announced that Sirusho will represent Armenia at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest. Diana Mnatsakanyan, the Armenian Head of Delegation, confirmed that a song selection will take place no later than 8th of March. "We are currently working on four songs," Mnatsakanyan said to Eurovision.tv. Shirusho is writing the lyrics for the four compositions herself. The young singer - she was born in 1987 - released her first album when she was 12. She has given concerts across Europe, in Canada, the United States and in the Middle-East. Currently, the 19-year old pop star is studying Diplomacy at the Yerevan State University. Mnatsakanyan herself seems to be looking forward to the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest and "can't wait" to select the song for Belgrade. But first, the Armenian public broadcaster has two other major events to deal with. On the 10th of February, the National Music Awards will take place. Armenia's Eurovision Song Contest participant will "certainly" take part in the event. On the 19th, the country will elect a new President, which the Armenian broadcaster covers intensively. Last week, the Azerbaijani news portal Today.Az reported that Sirusho would represent Armenia at the 2008 Eurovision Song Contest with a mix of famous traditional Azerbaijani folk songs. The story caused confusion in Azerbaijan and a petition was organized to express concern regarding the matter. However, ARMTV states the song referred to was never meant to be entered for the competition, as it has been performed in 2005 and thus could not even take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. The rules of the contest state that songs should not be publically performed or released before the 1st of October, 2007. "No song has been selected yet and we are planning to hold our national final no later than the 8th of March," the Armenian Head of Delegation re-confirms.

  11. BIOGRAPHY Thierry Vendome was born in Paris on May l st, 1964, in a family of artists ; his father was one of the greatest jewelry designers of that time. Thierry grew up in Paris , in an atmosphere filled with creativity, where friends and close acquaintances intermingled : painters, writers sculptors, photographers and jewellery designers from Belgium, Switzerland, Germany or Spain... At the of nine, his parents took him to the Designer Show where mesmerized by the avant-garde atmosphere with Savagely, Sotto, Paco Rabanne… he filled his young designer’s eyes with the universe of decorative arts. As a teen, white training with his father, he already designed jewellery, which he created from reclaimed materials, such as the floating wood on the shores of the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, for which he developed a passion. It was his first sense of freedom, yet he was aware of how fragile this freedom was in his long path of a designer, as the heir of the “giants” of whom he speaks : the line of pioneers that he sought to follow. In 1990, he went to Belgium on an internship in the Abbey of Maredsous, turned into a jewelry school and managed by Jean-Pierre de Sadeleer, the great Belgian designer and a friend of the family. He had literally, as the saying goes, "gold in his hands," for he created 30 somewhat "wild" original pieces, whith pearls and stones enhancing the beauty of the rings, pendants, bracelets and brooches that became the stating point of the very personal style of his future collections. However, for five years he withdrew voluntarily from his own designs. This was a time of active aluminium, he created bas-relief sculpture and wreckage sculptures. He also studied Art history, while trying to understand and decipher the artistic trends of the time. During his first trip to China in September, 1995, he opened himself to a civilization going back several thousand years, and to its mysteries. He brought back a number of imperial bronze coins and antique porcelains that he recycled as jewelry, such as a graceful necklace entitled "Extraordinary Garden", acclaimed and photographed by enthusiastic medias. In September, 2003, he opened his first store/workshop in the heard of the Marais, attracting a crowd of avant-garde artists typical to this area in Paris. Thierry Vendome is by no means a passive designer. He transposes into contemporary designs his conjectures about the present time. Rejecting diktats and forms, he replaces the void by volumes; his designs demonstrate an amazing use of unbalance; and his clients are rediscovering the modern art of wearing jewelry : playful at times, but always refined. He revisits volumes, recreates new spaces, reinvents from raw materials, such as his pendants in inlaid stones, his necklaces/brooches in ironwood or his "Rust" series, made of "exploded steel, a fierce and lasting material, "which gives him inspiration. He wants, as he says, "to instill power into my jewelry." He also bring something light and magical into it, such as the moving circles inspired by Agam, or "the Galaxies," his slightly cosmic signature piece. With his "double window" rings on a bed of diamonds under the sparkling stone, like an enlightened magician, he shows the way to the many people who delight in wearing these timeless, yet so real jewels.

    Armenian Flag

I think Golden Apricot is what the new generation wants to call it, there is a song KARMIR KAPUYT TSIRANAGUYN but when you look at it, at least the flags that were made only 5 years ago are bright orange, or am I colour blind? Leave the poor flag as it is!

  18. Wow, someone is angry I thought he has made some good and true point (hospitable people, generous, etc) but I think we have such a great history that he should have mentioned about in stead of saying that Armenia isn't the place to go into that history, I wonder what he was thinking of And regarding poverty, it again makes me wonder what exactly he has seen, or maybe hasn’t seen.
  19. No but he could prove that he wasn't fighting. Sut en xosum APASHKYARA heto asum en yes sut chxosaci yes enthamene chishte chasaci, yete karan mardun fracnen u sute geghetsik dasavorelov asen urem da sut chi parzapes chishte chasele.
  20. Yes, though I thought more could be added and there was a bit of exaggeration when it comes to poverty.
  21. It’s hard not to go to a country from the former Soviet bloc without a James Bond moment. I had a perfect one on arrival at Yerevan Airport – a pleasing concrete flying saucer of a building. A police officer kept starring at me. Perhaps I should have been a tad more nervous but, despite the severe green serge uniform and over-large Soviet style peaked cup, her pointed stilettos were oddly attractive, Well perhaps not oddly at all. Anyway, Armenia. Some of the nicest and most hospitable people you could ever wish to meet-and one of the poorest countries you could ever expect to find, certainly in Europe. Not that capital Yerevan lacks modern hotels and fin bars and restaurants. But out in the country, times are obviously hard. Churched out. A lot of that may be the legacy of Soviet times, where beauty does not seem to have been consideration. There are lots of unfinished concrete structures on a massive scale blotting the landscape. But there is also quite a few medieval churches-40,000 ancient churches and monuments in fact- beautiful for their remote settings and simplicity, if not for their stripped interiors. After visiting Ethiopia last year, and now Armenia, I don’t think I need to see an old church again for at least a good decade. Armenia was the first country in the world to embrace Christianity, a fact o which it is pretty proud. This isn’t the place to go into that history, but Yerevan’s Matenadaran or manuscript museum will give you an inkling. Some 12,000 ancient manuscripts hark back to the glorious days when the Armenian kingdom stretched from the Caspian to the Black Sea. I’ll drink to that. Now it covers and area fraction of that size and a conflict between Azerbaijan and Karabagh stutters on its borders. A ceasefire has held for ten years, but there is no peace deal yet. Yerevan’s Ararat distillery, which makes the cognac that was Winston Churchill’s favourite- and that the British PM was supplied with throughout World War 2- holds a vat ready to be breached on the day the treaty is signed. You can add your name to the autographs from all around the world that ask for peace – not just in this region. Well who’s against world peace? The bad guys in Armenian terms, are the turks who were responsible for the death of 1.5 million in 1915 – a genocidal campaign still yet to be acknowledged by our Nato partners in their capital Ankara. Hitler is said to have launched his better known Holocaust by asking; “Who remembers the extermination of the Armenians?” Fair point. The Holocaust memorial is another mass of concrete, moving in its simplicity and with an eternal flame essential for any understanding of the soul of this country but also worth a visit for the view of Yerevan. The site is dominated by a massive statue of Mother Armenia, replacing an earlier one of Lenin. Times have changed. Groaning with food. One thing that seems in no danger of falling out of favour in Armenia is eating. “Is this second breakfast, or first pre-lunch?” becoming a joking refrain during my trap. The country’s poverty belies – as it often does – the generosity of its people. I’d sit down to a table groaning with food, eat my way through a massive plate of cheese, bread, vegetables and chicken, then realise I’d just finished my starter. If I was lucky. Sometimes that was just the pre-starter. Yerevan enjoys a busy nightlife, with a sophisticated café culture. A slew of casinos has just been moved to the outskirts of the city near the airport, but there is still an abundance of bars and clubs. Crime seems practically non-existent, with the biggest hazard facing visitors being potholes hidden by incomplete roadwork. There’s also the hazard of cheap vodka, which I realised I had succumbed to when I heard myself enthusiastically singing in Russian in a karaoke bar. I didn’t know I know I spoke Russian, but there you go. I wasn’t actually as surprised by that as by the fact that I didn’t know I could sing either. When I started singing in Armenian – one of the oddest languages I’ve ever heard I realised it was probably time for bed. December 2000
  22. I personally would never accept it; I’d rather kill myself then let my parents chose a husband for me, a complete stranger. Most obviously parents do this thinking that they know the guy and want the best for their children. I believe that being in love and loving someone are two different things; I think there will never be passionate love between two strangers unless they both are stunningly good lucking and fall in love at first sight (fairy tale). From what I have seen arranged marriages are common among Muslim families that keep the traditions are religious etc and divorce rate among them is not very high. I think they just start loving each other for living under the same roof, people have affection towards their pets, they should have some sort of affection and respect towards others they live with. Also most often it’s successful because Muslim women obey their husbands therefore they just do as they are told and the family doesn’t break apart. I have seen many women that are very unhappy others are too proud to confess that they’re not happy and that their cultural traditions are wrong. Arranged marriages are very common among Muslims living in Britain, there is a helpline and also lots of advice to those who travel to their home country. Many times Pakistani parents take their children back to Pakistan and British government provides help to British – Asian girls. Some girls have committed suicide here in Britain though the parents deny and relation with arranging marriages.
