OCTOBER 27 TRIAL TO LAST LONG -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.azg.am/IMAGE/200119604.jpg -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today, October 27, 2001 marks the second anniversary of the tragic events that shook not only Armenia, but also the world, when a group of terrorist rushed into parliament chamber and killed eight top officials, including prime minister Vazgen Sargisian and parliament speaker Karen Demirchian. It was a blow that Armenia is still trying to overcome to settle into shape. The masterminds of the plot are not yet tracked down, instead the case has become a topic of political speculations, a means to satisfy some people’s arrogance, leaving the public to guess where this all will lead to. Though Nairi Hunanian, the group’s leader and other four defendants are standing the trial, there are many questions remaining unanswered. Here are what some parliament members and leaders of political parties say regarding the October 27 tragedy and the trial. Sergo Yeritsian (Country of Law party): “ One thing is clear, it is that the October 27 trial is important for Armenia’s further development, but I would refrain to comment on the trial, but I believe it will give answers to many vague questions. Now, as regards the separated case which is supposed to track down those who allegedly were behind the plot, I think when it goes to court, we shall get the answer.” Artashes Geghamian (Law and Accord party): “I think that president Kocharian should have resigned when the passions have died away to secure fair pre-time presidential election. He did not do it, which was followed by strange and obscure processes. I mean the man who was aware of the plot’s masterminding but was released under an amnesty. Second, I think that president Kocharian’s announcement that death penalty would not be applied in Armenia was premature.” Norik Petrosian (Communist party): “ On that day, two years ago I was in the parliament chamber, it may sound strange, but it was the most interesting section in my life, as I was witnessing how my fellows were metamorphosed. One of the terrorists, Edik Grigorian, was asking questions, which our economists could not answer. I am sure that the authorities are not making special efforts to have the crimes revealed. This makes me believe that there were people behind this group and I am not sure either that they will be revealed under these political conditions.” Aghvan Vardanian (Armenian Revolutionary Federation/ Dashnaktsutyun): “We gave our assessment of the crime back in 1999. It was a crime, directed against the foundations of our statehood. We think that the law-agencies, if necessary, have to continue looking for who masterminded it even decades. But it is beyond doubt that there were people behind Hunanian and his henchmen and they must be tracked down and punished. Myasnik Malkhasian (Hayastan group): “It is painful to see that two years have passed by but the crime is not totally discovered and neither the politicians nor the public have any idea about how the trial will proceed. As the assassins are known they should have been long ago executed, the debate whether death penalty should be applied or not seem to be quite unnecessary. Concerning the trial process I should say we are disappointed with it. The authorities should have undertaken quick action to reveal the organizers. The ongoing trial is keeping the public strained giving rise to suspicions and controversial comments. Galust Sahakian (Republican party): “ The trial seems to be proceeding within the legal field and it is very positive, but there is a dangerous development, I mean the prolonged trial which simplifies the crime. In any case I think it will drag on for a long time. I also think that there were concrete people behind the crime and I believe that they too will be discovered and punished.” Rouben Mirzakhanian (Armenian Democratic Liberal party, chairman): “The next day after the October 27 killings the Armenian Democratic-Liberal Party (ADL) came out with a statement, which described the attack on the parliament as the biggest political crime. The statement also said that Armenia’s political prospects were contingent on its discovery. Some developments that followed right after the crime, I mean an attempt to carry out coup d’etat, gave rise to serious concerns. Members of the former ruling regime appeared in the defense ministry. They were neither on the side of the victims nor were in the parliament that day, but were in the defense ministry building. Their far-reaching goal was to oust the legitimate authorities and create a chaos in the country hoping to take back the lost power. We believe that these activities should not remain without serious response. Some political circles are trying to exploit the October 27 killings with the aim of putting the blame on the president and secure their return to power. This camp involves on the one hand representatives of the former ruling regime and on the other hand the families of the victims. This of course, causes some concerns, but is not dangerous, as it is not realistic. Now as regards the ongoing trial, it is being dragged on and creates an impression of farce. In short, what we have today is not encouraging. By Gor Abrahamian © Copyright AZG

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE ISSUE BECAME BARGAIN OBJECT As it was supposed the European Parliament (EP) dropped out the Armenian genocide demand as a precondition for Turkey’s progress towards European Union (EU) accession. Turkish political circles responded to this immediately- considering this a serious success for official Ankara in EU-Turkey relations. Among the respondents was Ortadoghu University professor Husein Bagci. In the live broadcast of Turkish state TV channel on October 26 he ascribed the rejection of the provision to the efficiency of Ankara’s efforts, considered it a concession and added that the concession was expected. We, Armenians, in our turn hoped that in case of the provision’s rejection the EP would draw forward another precondition instead of the genocide recognition. Yes, this rejection doesn’t help Turkey much in his progress towards accession, for, as Bagci himself noted, EU demands concession form Turkey in the Cyprus issue in this respect. The important thing here is not the demand itself but the policy of EU towards Turkey. In the bases of this policy lies the following- to always hinder the accession process of Turkey towards EU with a term that Turkey is not estranged from Europe. That is, when drawing forward a precondition to Turkey the European countries don’t come out form the necessity of solving an issue, but from task of hindering Turkey’s EU accession. So EU simply changes the preconditions of Turkey’s accession- actually keeping the obstacles unchanged. EP now puts the stress on the Cyprus issue because there is a notable tension here, and the Armenian genocide is, most probably for some time, left aside. And when the Cyprus issue loses its urgency Europe will probably replace it with Kurdish problem, and so on. This is of course a general approach. The Armenian Genocide precondition was dropped because USA wanted so. There is another thing here. Europe wants to form European quick reaction forces, which goes counter to USA’s interests, as far as it doesn’t want to see any alternative for NATO. Turkey is the representative of USA in Europe and fully supports the latter. In this situation Europe drops the Armenian Genocide issue and starts to speculate the Cyprus issue, using it as an object of bargain between itself and Turkey so that the latter doesn’t oppose the formulation of European quick reaction forces. Taking into consideration another fact that USA promised to help Turkey in its progress towards EU accession if it helps USA in the Afghan war, and Turkey of course agreed, then it is obvious that US government implements certain pressure on European countries concerning Armenian Genocide. And most evidently the European countries rejected the provision on considering the Armenian genocide a precondition for Turkey’s progress towards EU accession– not willing to oppose the USA. So the rejection of Armenian genocide provision was not the result of Turkish diplomacy’s brilliant work, as they claim, but again, as it has always been, the game of super powers. US SENATE RESOLUTION ON SECTION 907 TO COME INTO EFFECT AT END OF NEXT WEEK 26.10.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ The US Senate resolution authorizing the President to waive Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act has not come onto effect yet. According to the regulations, the conciliation of this document in the conciliatory committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Congress must take place. Then the discussion regarding the document must be held at the general meeting of the committee. And only after the bill approval by the Congress Houses it will be signed by the President of the country and will come into effect. It is planned that all this procedures will be completed by the end of the next week. After this President Bush will have the right for temporal veto on Section 907, restricting the direct aid to Azerbaijan until it lifts the blockade against Armenia and Nagorno Artsax. This right is conferred for the period till December 31, 2002. If he considers there is a necessity to extend this term, he will have to address the Senate, which will study the issue and have corresponding decisions. It should be reminded that this document stipulates four terms, in the availability of which the head of the country may waive the Section. The restrictions can be lifted if: 1. it is necessary for the fight against the terrorism, 2. there is a necessity to support the armed force alertness of the US and its antiterrorist coalition partners, 3. if this helps to secure Azerbaijan's boarders, 4. it does not hamper the attempts for the Artsax conflict peaceful settlement and is not used for aggression against Armenia by Azerbaijan. ARMENIA'S PRESIDENT IS SATISFIED WITH THE US SENATE RESOLUTION REGARDING SECTION 907 26.10.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ Armenia's head Robert Kocharyan stated yesterday he was satisfied with the US Senate resolution authorizing the President to waive Section 907 of the Freedom Support Act. According to him, it is very important that it is not the question regarding the repeal, but just the possibility of temporal veto on Section 907. And there are a number of stipulated terms, on observance of which a resolution to lift the sanction temporarily might be passed. The President thinks that the Section 907 waiving will not affect the perspective of Artsax conflict peaceful settlement and will not disturb the balance of forces between the conflict sides. EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT REJECTS SECTION STIPULATING THE CLAIM TO RECOGNIZE FACT OF GENOCIDE OF ARMENIANS PRESENTED TO TURKEY 26.10.2001 /PanARMENIAN.Net/ Yesterday the report regarding Turkey's joining the European union was discussed at the European parliament. As we have informed, French deputy of « Christian democrats» Alan Lamassur has suggested to include the Section, stipulating the setting up the claim to recognize the fact of the 1915 genocide of Armenians to Turkey, as a prior term for the joining of this country the EU, in the report. The deputies rejected the suggestion. It should be reminded that earlier a similar section, introduced by deputies Sharl Paskua and Andre Briye was also rejected. The resolution passed by the European Parliament states that «EU supports the activities of Turkish and Armenian scientists regarding the evaluation of the historic past». Obviously, they mean the activities of Armenian-Turkish commission for reconciliation where not historians but politicians and political scientists work. http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/7508/m_connors.jpg Real name : Krekor Ohanian Date of birth (location) : 15 August 1925, Fresno, California, USA. Sometimes Credited As: Michael Connors (I), Touch Connors Mike Connors--whose real name is Krekor Ohanian--was born in Fresno, California, on August 15, 1925. While attending UCLA on a basketball scholarship, he was spotted by film director William Wellman, who encouraged him to pursue acting. Young Krekor readily agreed. In the process, he changed his name to Touch Connors, and then finally to Mike Connors. His first film role, in 1952, was in "Sudden Fear" with Joan Crawford. But Mike's career blossomed in television, not films. Although he has made virtually hundreds of TV appearances, Mike is best known for the three shows on which he regularly appeared: "Tightrope" (CBS, 1959-60); "Mannix" (CBS, 1967-75); and "Today's FBI" (ABC, 1981-82). Interestingly, all three were crime dramas, a television format well-suited to his macho acting style. In "Tightrope," Mike starred as an anonymous undercover agent--sometimes called "Nick"--assigned to infiltrate organized crime. He came close to repeating that role more than 20 years later in "Today's FBI," an update of the seminal ABC show, "The FBI," starring Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. In this newfangled version, Mike played Ben Slater, an FBI supervisor overseeing four agents, one of whom was named Nick. However, it was as Joe Mannix that Mike got to shine. Whether employed by the computer-obsessed Intertect company in the first season (an advanced concept in 1967), or self-employed thereafter, Mannix knew how to solve crimes quickly. Some would also say violently: a grounds upon which "Mannix" was roundly criticized in its day. Following its cancellation in 1975, Mike appeared as a talk-show guest on shows including "The Mike Douglas Show" and "The John Davidson Show." In 1984, he actively supported Ronald Reagan's re-election efforts. He made a guest appearance in a "Murder, She Wrote" episode in 1989, the same year he starred in the ABC miniseries "War and Remembrance." In between these stints, he worked in a St. Petersburg, Florida, dinner theater. In 1991, he good-naturedly poked fun at his tough-guy image, by appearing with SCTV's Dave Thomas in Showtime's "Public Enemy #2," which People magazine labeled "a funny special . . . a perfect lampoon . . . ." Looking back on his "Mannix" days, Mike defends the show. He told one interviewer, "There is hardly a show on television today in that genre that isn't more violent than "Mannix" was. We never really killed people; they were [just] shot and wounded . . . ." He has little respect for current crime programs, in which he thinks there are "explosions and shootings and knifings every time you turn around." Mike has two grown children from his longtime marriage to Mary Lou Riley. Neither child is an actor. Actor filmography Gideon's Webb (1998) .... http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/7508/kallen1.gif Kallen Esperian Kallen Esperian, who was born in Barrington, Illinois on June 8, 1961, has emerged as one of opera's most acclaimed lyric sopranos and has appeared in major opera houses around the world. After earning her degree at the University of Illinois, Miss Esperian began her career as a mezzo-soprano using her real name, Karen Machen (she's married to opera director Thomas Machen) until she sang in Luciano Pavarotti's Vocal Competition in Philadelphia in 1981. Mr. Pavarotti asked her if indeed she was a mezzo. When Miss Esperian replied that she was, Mr. Pavarotti replied, "Wrong. You are a soprano. Come back tomorrow and sing a soprano aria for us." She did just that and performed as a soprano when she won the Pavarotti Competition in 1985. Since her debut as Mimi in Puccini's La Boheme with the Opera Company of Philadelphia in the Spring of 1986, Kallen Esperian has appeared on the world's major opera stages, including New York's Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Deutsche Oper and Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin, the Vienna State Opera, the Opera de la Bastille in Paris, Buenos Aires' famed Teatro Colon and Milan's La Scala. A native of the Chicago area, Miss Esperian graduated from the University of Illinois with a Degree in Vocal Performance, and she performed frequently in regional opera theaters and with orchestras in concert. She was declared a winner at the finals of the Opera Company of Philadelphia/Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition in 1985, and this led to her debut with that company in April of 1986. Following the competition performances, Miss Esperian traveled with other winners for further performances of La Boheme in Modena and Genoa and later in Beijing when the Genoa Opera made it's historic visit to China in the summer of that year. A film, Distant Harmony , documents this journey and features Miss Esperian in scenes from La Boheme. Her debut with the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin, again with Mr. Pavarotti in La Boheme, was an enormous success and led to an immediate invitation for her to star as Mimi in a new Goetz Friedrich production of the opera in the 1988-89 season.

http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/Lobby/7508/petroscrop50.jpg Tigran Petrosian The World's Highest Ranked Player The ninth world chess champion Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian died in the prime of his life. In his cast years he worked long over his games, annotating them and arranging them in order. He lectured in the chess school for juniors run by his sport society "Spartacus," as well as on TV. Because of his untimely death he failed to collect his works for a book. Tigran Petrosian's creative work has not yet been investigated as thoroughly as one would wish. The amount of time that has passed since his early death is too limited. Gone is the chessmaster who had so much to give to the chess world, one who often brought us simple and even trivial facts that comprise the true fundamentals of chess creativity. The simplicity of explanations shown in this book demonstrates the depths of Petrosian's approach to chess. It is a consequence of the clarity of his thought and unique comprehension of global chess problems, as well as the subtleties that go to make up chess tactics and strategy. Few chessplayers have made a considerable contribution to the development of our game, and very few are able to explain these discovered secrets to posterity. Petrosian has done much in this field. Perhaps his written works are not so voluminous, but they shed a strong light on the very essence and fundamentals of chess. This book is not a traditional textbook or manual which teaches elementary rules. The function and role of this book is of much greater importance: it teaches chess thinking or more exactly how one should think, because chess thinking by itself is not necessarily effective.

By DAVID ROSENZWEIG, TIMES STAFF WRITER Five people with reputed ties to Armenian organized crime were arrested Tuesday in an extortion and kidnap plot against a fellow countryman who was seeking political asylum in the United States. A federal indictment unsealed after their arrests accused the suspects, all from the Los Angeles area, of using cohorts in Moscow to carry out the plot against businessman Armen Karakhanyan. "Although the methodology of the crimes alleged in this case may be standard practice among members of Armenian organized crime when in Armenia, they are not acceptable in the United States," said Ronald Iden, who heads the FBI field office in Los Angeles. Prosecutors said Karakhanyan arrived in the United States last year seeking political asylum. He told immigration officials that he had been jailed in Armenia for speaking out against the government. A once well-to-do businessman in Armenia, he settled in the Los Angeles area. Soon afterward, prosecutors said, he was contacted by members of the ring, who told him he was now living in "Little Armenia" and that he would face the same troubles he had encountered in Armenia unless he helped them in a bogus check-cashing scheme. Ordered to cash a large, fraudulent check drawn against a Spanish bank, Karakhanyan went into hiding in Northern California, authorities said. The ring members immediately suspected that he had fled to Moscow, where his wife, Elmira, was living at the time. Prosecutors said the suspects arranged for associates in Russia to kidnap Karakhanyan, threatening to kill him unless he returned to the United States and helped them in their check-cashing scheme. A few days later, authorities said, several unidentified men invaded his wife's apartment in Moscow and abducted a man they thought was Karakhanyan. They were wrong. It was a cousin. In several subsequent telephone calls to Karakhanyan's wife, prosecutors said, ring members threatened to kill the cousin unless their demands were met. At that point, Karakhanyan contacted the FBI. Under the agency's protection, he returned to Los Angeles and resumed his dealings with the suspects. According to the indictment, Karakhanyan was told "there is no escaping," that the ring knew where to find his relatives and that he now owed them $144,000. During one heated encounter, one suspect slapped Karakhanyan on the face a few times and threatened to shoot him in the head because he had fallen behind on the payment schedule, the indictment said. Despite the threats, Karakhanyan continued to meet with the suspects from March until this month, when the U.S. attorney's office presented its case to a federal grand jury. Arrested Tuesday were Ashot Manukyan, 47, and Hovannes Igarian, 38, both of Los Feliz; Sousanna Ounousian, 38, and her husband, Pogos Ketchedjian, 38, both of Van Nuys; and Hovsep Keshishian, 35, of Glendale. All five were charged with conspiring to extort money from Karakhanyan after he contacted the FBI. Manukyan and Igarian also were accused of conspiring to take hostages and receiving proceeds from the extortion plot. If convicted, they face sentences ranging from 20 years to life in prison. An FBI spokesman said efforts are underway to track down the men who carried out the kidnapping in Russia. The FBI was assisted in its investigation by the Immigration and Naturalization Service, Glendale Police Department and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Local man arrested in organized crime case By Alecia Foster GLENDALE -- A Glendale man with ties to Armenian organized crime was arrested Tuesday morning on federal charges relating to a kidnapping and extortion plot against a former Armenian businessman. Hovsep Keshishian, 35, was one of five residents from throughout Los Angeles arrested in the case. Keshishian is charged with conspiring to commit extortion and extortion, according to the federal indictment. The businessman came to the United States seeking political asylum in 2000 after being imprisoned for speaking out against the Armenian government in 1993, the indictment stated. Soon after his arrival, the man was approached by members of an Armenian crime ring and told he faced trouble unless he helped the group, the indictment stated. At one point, the group kidnapped a relative of the businessman living in Moscow in order to get him to pay money, it stated. Keshishian had threatened to physically harm and kill the businessman in attempts to collect money from him, the indictment stated. On March 22, 2001, Keshishian hit the man in the face and threatened to shoot him in the head if he didn't pay $20,000 to two others in the alleged crime ring, it stated. "We have built a number of cases during the past four or five years involving immigrants from Armenia, which would not be unexpected due to the influx of Armenian immigrants into the area," said Thom Mrozek, public affairs officer for the U.S. Attorney's office. Four others were indicted on charges that include extortion, conspiring to extort, conspiring to take hostages, foreign communications with the intent to extort and receiving the proceeds of extortion. The four included: Ashot Manukyan, 47, of Los Feliz; Hovannes Igarian, 38, of Los Feliz; Sousanna Ounousian, 38, of Van Nuys; and Ounousian's husband, Pogos Ketchedjian, 38, of Van Nuys.

Council Of Europe Panel Meets In Armenia By Shakeh Avoyan Armenia on Monday hosted a meeting of a major parliamentary committee of the Council of Europe for the first time since becoming a full member of the organization last January. Twenty-two parliamentarians from 16 member states attend the two-day session of the committee on culture and education of the Council’s Parliamentary Assembly (PACE). The speaker of the Armenian parliament, Armen Khachatrian, welcomed the participants, saying that the choice of the meeting’s venue is “symbolical” given the ongoing celebrations of the 1700th anniversary of Armenia’s conversion to Christianity. Khachatrian said the event had a profound impact on Armenian culture which is “a part of the pan-European cultural heritage.” Two Azerbaijani deputies attending the meeting accused Armenians of destroying Azerbaijani monuments in Nagorno-Artsax and the surrounding occupied territories. The Armenian side denied the charges, seeking to prove that the opposite is the case. An exhibition organized specially for the participants featured photographs of ancient Armenian churches in Azerbaijan, Georgia and Azerbaijan that are crumbling after decades of neglect and deliberate destruction.
