On the surface, Karapetian increasingly seems unable to distinguish his arse from his elbow. Aghtamar was "restored" for political reasons. The tiny remittances received from tourists visiting it are of no importance. If the churches of Mush had been lucky enough to have been transformed into mosques then they would still be preserved in a reasonably intact state. This video footage of the cemetery is quite well known. It was taken in Armenia. I've read that it was filmed in 1998. After the publicity of the the Azeri destruction of the Julfa cemetery it was re-released in January 2006 and given publicity by Azerbaijan. If the graves are graves of Muslims then they will be aligned aproximately north to south. If you look at the shadows, you can see that the video has been taken in the early evening, which means that the graves do align in a north to south direction. All the graves clearly date from the 20th century, from the Soviet period, which is why the inscriptions are in Cyrillic. The video clearly shows a large amount of casual and random vandalism done by individuals over some considerable time - i.e., it differs completely from Julfa because it is not an attempt at total obliteration done by a nations' armed forces.

Again you've missed the point. Whether the word "Ermeni" is being used as an insult or not isn't the issue (though I suspect the Laz are mostly using it just as a factual statement - they condsider that the Hemshinli are Armenian in origin). Most people in Turkey will have never heard of the Hemshinli. 99% of those that have, would call them Hemshinli, and not call them anything else. And of the few that would call them by another ethnic name, most would call them "Laz" (used as a term for anyone from Turkey's Eastern Black Sea region). As for minorities in Turkey - there are plenty of them that are not targetted at all, it is only if they are percieved as some sort of threat that there are difficulties. The "threat" doesn't have to be real, of course. Turkey is a country that seems to require the constant existance of real or imagined threats. To date, the Hemshinli have not been percived as a "threat". However, thanks to Armenian irredentism they might start to be.

Where do you get this from? The northern neighbours of the Hemshinli, the Laz, sometimes call the Hemshinli "Ermeni", but (unless a similar situation exists in Hemshinli diaspora settlements around Adapazar) Turks don't generally call the Hemshinli "Ermeni".

Either Akcam has been getting interviewed by lots of really amateurish journalists (a possibility, since most journalists are idiots) or his mouth works independently from his brain. What sort of real historian would come away with nonsense like "In October 1912 the Ottoman Empire lost 69% of its territory .... because of Christians"? The Balkan wars were fought because national groups were re-asserting their identities and wanted to govern themselves, free from the rule of an oppressive and backward empire. Religion had little to do with it on the Greek, Bulgarian, or Serbian side - proved by the fact that as soon as they had defeated Turkey they started squabbling and fighting each other. The "a homeland for young Turks" bit can be put down to the ignorance of the journalist, who clearly doesn't understand that it means something completely different when written "the homeland for the Young Turks". But how can Akcam say in one sentence "However, I do not think that religion was a cause for deportation and annihilation of Armenians", and a couple of sentences later say the exact opposite: "Religion was used for uniting the Muslim population against Armenians".

I generally don't reply to questions from someone who clearly hasn't got the point. However: Selçuk Güney, a local Hemshinli activist, complains (rightly) of "Ayder's degeneration". But if all those new hotels and businesses in Ayder have Hemshinli owners, and employ local Hemshinli people, then he is going to have an impossible task in getting anywhere with his complaints. On the other hand, if they are all Laz or Muslim Greek or Turk incomers then that will put a completely different light on the problem.

That's not correct. In the 1980s and 90s tapes of Hemshinli music were freely available, both as commercial releases and as privately recorded or bootleg tapes. Ayder went from a couple of hotels in the 1980s, to about a dozen in the 1990s, to over 100 now. Who owns them and works in them I wonder? Hemshinli? Destruction by being flooded by a dam is probably a more likely fate.

No, inserting subtitles is not a pain in the arse. If the translation is written in short, or easily divisible sentences, then it is just a matter of pasting them into the frames using video editing software. Making the sentences easily readable, allowing time for them to be read, and maintaining the natural flow of the words is more important than accurately placing the exact sentences onto exactly the correct points of the video. And static subtitles are more easily readable than scrolling ones. Is that better?
