Do not try to turn this into a Christian-Muslim thing. If the Ottoman Empire cared so much about their Muslim citizens, why is it that the Arab Muslims had no problem taking up arms against the Turks?

From the ever-so-reliable Journal of Turkish Weekly: Armenia's government made changes in the law on the administrative division that allows the names of geographical places to be changed. The names of 52 places must be changed because of their disharmonious and "foreign" roots, head of the Real Estate Cadastre Manuk Vardanian said at a briefing. Among the names of places which must be changed are the populated areas that have Kurdish, Russian, and Turkic roots. In particular, the names Alaverdi, Ahtala and some other populated areas will be changed. During the last 50 years the Armenian authorities have changed hundreds of Turkic names into Armenian names. Apparently, Sedat Laciner is upset because Armenia is changing the names of cities with Turkic roots. Did it ever occur to him that these cities had different names before the Turkic or Turkish invasions into the Caucasus and Asia Minor? You cannot decorate a city with mosques, minarets and Ataturk statues and call its history Turkish. Sorry, Sedat.

Rubbish. Prior to the war, there were no more than 300,000 Azeris in both Armenia and Artsakh combined. In fact, the "one million" claim is more applicable to the Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan, who had a large community in Baku and sizeable ones in Sumgait and Gandzak.

It is a "creole" or mixed language (Armenian and Romany) spoken by the Roma people or gypsies.

Baku was a nice city in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when it was populated by the people who pretty much built it, namely Armenians and Russians. Now it's becoming more and more like your average Turkish urban area. I wonder if they plan on demolishing the city's Armenian churches or using them as a showcase for tourists?

Because of the absence of ancient dialectal differences, it cannot be determined in what region the classical Armenian was evolved and stabilized. As the language of scholars and the Church, the classic Grabar has remained in use to the present time. It passed gradually out of popular use in the Middle Ages, being replacedamong the people by the modern common vernacular (Ashkharhabar, from Ashkharh, "world," "country") which was in general use in the fifteenth century. It is to be noted that there are a number of phonetic variations between Eastern and Western vernaculars of the modern Armenian, as for example the sonorous labial, guttural and dental letters, b, g, and d, heard in the East, are in the West turned into p, k and t. For example, the word Grabar, so pronounced in the East, would in the West be pronounced Krapar. Sourb Grigor in the East become Sourp Krikor in the West. I've already planned my travels for summer 2007. I will be visiting Armenia for one week and touring Europe for another week. I plan to visit most of the central European countries, such as Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. But I don't think a week is enough time to tour even one of them.

It's about time someone created a website like this. It would be beneficial not only to odars who wish to learn the language, but to Armenians as well.

You're right, it's not going to happen any time soon. Accepting homosexuality and gay marriage could both support and damage our cause. The Pope always enjoyed the fact that Armenians were generally conservative, religious people. Accepting gay marriage wouldn't help us much on that end.

I can understand why they're paranoid over Armenia, but I don't understand the inclusion of Belarus. Is it because they are similar to Russia and its president called for the creation of a Pan-Slavic state?

This is foolish. It's as if the Azeris looked very carefully for one little thing which they could use as a reason for one of their tantrums.
