Prof.Akcam Reveals Turkish Plan to Pay Scholars to Deny the Armenian Genocide By Harut Sassounian Publisher, The California Courier Prof. Taner Akcam dropped abombshell during a lecture at the Glendale Public Library last month, when herevealed that a confidential source in Istanbulhad informed him about the Turkish government's scheme to bribe Americanscholars to deny the Armenian Genocide. Dr. Akcam, holder of theKaloosdian/Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies at Clark University inWorcester, Mass., stated that "the Turkish government is following a verysystematic and aggressive policy in the US," by attempting to cast doubton the veracity of the Armenian Genocide. Ankara'sgrand scheme is to make Turkish denialist claims as widely acceptable as thebelief that the events of 1915 constituted genocide. Moreover, through a seriesof lawsuits in US courts, Turkeyand its proxies are trying to present any criticism of denialist scholars andexclusion of revisionist materials from university programs as suppression of"academic freedom." Prof. Akcam, one of the firstTurkish scholars to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, related to his audiencethat during his visit to Istanbul last December,he had a private conversation with a person who had "insideinformation" regarding the Turkish Foreign Ministry's activities in the United Stateson subject of the Armenian Genocide. Dr. Akcam's confidential source told himthat sometime in 2004-2005, an American university professor had met with"authorities connected with the Turkish Foreign Ministry." At thatmeeting, the professor told his Turkish hosts that "Turkey didn'thave a systematic program on the academic level with which to counter theclaims of an Armenian Genocide," and that "the genocide claim is wellestablished at this point," telling them that "there's verylittle" they can do "by trying to confront it head on." Dr. Akcam was privatelyinformed that the American professor made the following recommendation toTurkish officials: "The thing you need to do is to dig a ditch in front ofall the genocide claims; you need to create doubt by writing scholarly workswhich will awaken that doubt." Dr. Akcam interpreted these words to meanthat "by producing and encouraging new academic works," Americanscholars could "normalize the idea that 1915 was not genocide, just as thebelief that it was genocide has become accepted." While it is commonly assumedthat the Turkish government provides financial incentives to scholars worldwideto publish articles and books denying the Armenian Genocide, this is the firsttime that a knowledgeable Turkish insider has confirmed these assumptions. Theconfidential source told Dr. Akcam that the Turkish Foreign Ministry acceptedthe American scholar's proposal and "transferred large sums of money tothe US."The informant revealed to Dr. Akcam the names of American academics whoreceived funds to write books denying the Armenian Genocide, and disclosed that"there are documents signed by their own hand and that these receipts arenow in the files of the Foreign Ministry's records." In his lecture, Dr. Akcamstated that he did not want "to put any academic under a cloud ofsuspicion." However, when he connected the information received from his Istanbul source to somerecent publications, "a disturbing picture emerges as far as ArmenianGenocide research is concerned." Dr. Akcam then referred toMichael Gunter's recent book, "Armenian History and the Question ofGenocide," as a possible "example of this approach." The websiteof the book's publisher, Palgrave Macmillan, stated: "Although as many as600,000 of them [Armenians] died during World War I, it was neither apremeditated policy perpetrated by the Ottoman Turkish government nor an eventunilaterally implemented without cause. Of course, in no way does this excusethe horrible excesses that were committed." Prof. Akcam further observedthat the four academics -- Hakan Yavuz of University of Utah, Guenter Lewy of University of Massachusetts,Jeremy Salt of Bilkent University, Ankara, and Edward J. Ericson of Marine Corps Command & Staff College, Virginia-- who praised Gunter's book, "are well known for their denialist positionand works regarding the genocide of 1915." Although Prof. Akcam did notwish to make "an accusation against the book's writer," he stated:"the strange similarities between what I was told in confidence in Istanbul and what appearson the jacket cover of that book gave me pause, that's all." While no one should accuseacademics of receiving funds from the Turkish government or its proxies withoutsolid evidence, it would be enlightening if any of them would voluntarily comeforward and disclose whether they have been funded by Turkish sources!

AZERBAIJANI PHILOSOPHER: AZERIS USE ARMENIANS AS PERSONAL STANDARD
Aratta-Kingdom replied to Yervant1's topic in Life
PanArmenian.net--Azerbaijani people hae a long suffered disease called Armenia mania. Doctor of Philosophy Aidin Ali-Zadeh writes. "In psychiatry there are diseases like megalomania, persecution mania etc... We hae mania of the Armenian conception," as stated by the Ali-Zadeh's article on the kultura.az website. "We do everything because Armenians did so. All contests and competions are cxonducted with the only aim to be ahead ofthe Armenians. Armenians are like standard for Azeris. It is a center of galaxy, a benchmark, we push off from. If we are said to have something negative, we instead of improving it, say that Armenia is worse in it. And if it said that something is better in Armenia, hefty resources are immediately being provided alongside with information support, so that to make it better than in Armenia. It ended in tracing Armenian criminal chronicles to find if our criminal is less and more humane," the author writes. "It is so nice that there are Armenian on earth. If not, so many people would ramain unemployed, so many people woud not have something to write, could not organize competitons and earn money. People would not have something to talk about. We would not have industry, agriculture, aircrafts would not fly, and trains would not go. If Armenians have all this, we, too, must have it all, but larger quantities and of higher quality," the Article says. If should be noted that access to kultura.az website was blocked some hours after the publication. When trying to open the site you encounter the error "Bandwidth Limit Exceeded'. -
