OK, I know this is not original and I know everyone has heard all these songs on this new CD but I have to say that it is an incredible compilation. I LOVED every second of this new CD.

I used to love Ray, sort of fell out of it. Off the subject, Dianne Reeves is going to perform at the Blue Note. I will try my hardest to purchase the tickets (using my student discount, otherwise the price is hefty), she is absofreakinglutely amazing!

I have to say that this is one album that I keep going back to these days. It is really amazing. She cannot be compared to the greats, but she sure has an incredible range.

Azat jan, she's good but you're right she misses something to become the next queen of blues. I guess the rap education she recieved made her a little bit unsuited for blues. But she's OK...

Agree Armen. But to me it is still pretty amazing how this poor kid can go from nothing to a pretty good rap artist(I don't thing Rap is art by any means), to a movie star(I think she may have even won the Oscar) to a very good blues/jazz album. Not bad.

And I have to say the more I listen the more I like the CD.

I dont care if it is art or not.... I personally enjoy many forms of art and there are many forms that I hate.

I just have never heard any good rap. and no that M&M guy and the dine guy and snoop cat and puff the magic dragon are not producing good music as far as I can tell. But if someone there wants to listen to it(and there are millions that do) I have no issue with that.

Now I would also argue that people like Ray Charles and BB King are rap artists as well(at the very other spectrum of rap) and I do enjoy that immensely.

There is such a thing as good rap?  Please point me to one or two titles and let me be the judge

style_images/master/snapback.png

You may or may not enjoy Rap Music, but it does not mean that Rap Music cannot be an elaborate and respectable form of Music. There's no need to mention titles if you're negatively predisposed. Furthermore, there are many forms of Rap and it's hard to tell which form may please you best!

I understand. You are entitled to have your preferences. I know a very talented music composer who is into Contemporary Classical Music - Stockhausen, Boulez, Zimmerman etc. - yet has a higher opinion of the work of some Rap artists than Mozart, for instance!

In fact, if you listen carefully, a considerable percentage of Classical Music is simply exercises in Harmony, hardly Music!!!

Maybe your exposure to Rap is limited to couple commercial hits!

Siamanto, I completely understand and agree with what you have said above. Believe me I do not disagree with the notion that Rap is are or that it is music and all that. I personally do not like it. It is only a personally opinion toward that music. And yes my knowledge of that form of music is only the popular groups and individuals and I really dislike all of them.

What do you mean? Thanks!

To me rap is much like an artist getting in front of a mic and just reading his/her poetry to music(my limited knowledge of rap) and Ray Charles and BB King have done that in the 60s. Unless I am missing something about Rap or just dont understand it at all.

It is that. As far as I know it goes back all the way to Africa and was brought to America by slaves. Modern-day rap and hip-hop is largely based on that idea of rapping: speaking rhythmically as a form of expression, often as a result of what is happening around you.

In the 1970s, new rap emerged in the ghettos of New York, in part as innovation, but also in part because of the socio-economic condition of the "underclasses" of blacks. These young blacks didn't get the opportunity to get formal "white" musical training, very much like ancestors when they produced call-and-response, spirituals, blues and jazz for the first time (and were looked down upon by whites, mind you!). These kids had access to just two record players and a mic. Now you may not like what they created with that, but it did trigger a whole new era of music, clothing, and dance. It's not just about rap. It's also about hip-hop, house, break beat, and ultimately theater, i.e. new style of dancing and acting; play on words etc. In other words, this is the continuation of the history of African-American folk music. And like it's ancestors, it has taken over the world.
