DominO123
I had an idea for hyeforum to leave a trace for ever, as being a group that participated in the search of intelligent life. So, I had an idea, why not founding our SETI group? I would like to know first if people are interested, I will do everything necessary and say what to do. Any comments? PS: If some ignore what is SETI, here its official page. http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/

vava
SETI is a waste style_images/master/snapback.png Please explain - I've always heard it's a neat idea... if only for the prospect of collective computing. I don't know much about it however.
Anileve
Well I am not really a decisive body, but as I've said I would support you. I would be interested in attracting more people with your outlook.
DominO123
SETI is a waste style_images/master/snapback.png The only thing you have to do is to let your home computer run it while you're at work Azatig.

DominO123
Azat, my first idea was this: http://folding.stanford.edu/ But I thought no one will have been interested about it, something about alien attract people.
DominO123
Thinking of it, maybe http://folding.stanford.edu/ is a better idea, afterall it serves for finding cures fore some diseases. Will you be in for that Azatig?

DominO123
I set up for this. http://hyeforum.com/index.php?showtopic=10207 Right now my computer is off most of the time for the folding to be done, but in about a week, I planning to go a lot speedier in my folding. There are right now over 20 CPUs working in this project, we need more. More more...
ArmEngine
Aper es SETI haykakan papakan bana Byurakan SETI conferences (1964 and 1971) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two important early meetings on the subject of SETI held at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. The 1964 Conference on Extraterrestrial Civilizations stemmed from discussions by Shklovskii's group at the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute and was organized by Nikolai Kardashev. Held three years after the seminal Green Bank conference (1961), it was attended entirely by radio astronomers and had as its aim "to obtain rational technical and linguistic solutions for the problem of communication with extraterrestrial civilizations which are much more advanced than the Earth civilization." The emphasis on (a) communication, and ( the broadcasting of powerful signals by highly advanced intelligence from great distances (possibly even extragalactic), was in contrast to the greater attention paid in the United States to searching for messages from nearby stars and civilizations more on a par with our own. The Soviet approach was typified by Kardashev's classification scheme for technological races (see Kardashev civilizations) and Troitskii's interest in the possibility of detecting signals from other galaxies.1 The 1971 Byurakan conference was the first international SETI meeting and was sponsored by the Academies of Sciences of both the Soviet Union and the United States. Ambartsumian, Kardashev, Shklovskii, and Troitskii carried out the organization on the Soviet side, while Drake, Morrison, and Sagan performed the same function on the American side. Participants included 28 Soviets, 15 Americans, and 4 scientists from other nations. Radio search methods, techniques and consequences of contact, message content, and extraterrestrial astroengineering were among the topics discussed. A tentative conclusion of the conference was that there might be a million technical civilizations in the Galaxy, although it was recognized that the Drake Equation gave a subjective rather than an objective probability.2 References -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Work on the folding team insteed, and if you are able to getter many people from your website, I may add publicy for your site through our Folding team page. We're about 1000nt position out of over 30,000 teams... you ain't gonna come near that with SETI, with the millions of processing units available and the very strong teams, why then not work on the team that already exist? Founding "SETI team" in terms of taking people away from folding is not my intention at all. Just interesting that Armenians did the SETI analysis for Soviets back then. Joining SETI@home wont really help find aliens they need more sensitive equipment and more radio telescopes to scan instead.

The main goal for me to propose SETI was because generaly it attracts people, and I wanted to found an Armenian team. In term of it to be practicale... suppose that we do find waves emitted from intelloigent aliens, according to Sip(and he made a lot of sense), the chances that we decipher them is near about zero. On the other hand, folding proteins has down to Earth advantages. And I do not dought that your intentions were not to take away potential folders, but still that is what is gonna happen... we have a team which is strong, where now about 950nt position or so on a total of over 30 thousands team around the world. You won't comme anywhere near with a SETI team, because they're really strong teams. So the two major reasons motivating the existance of the team will make SETI useless in comparaison with the Protein folding them. It is already there, and it is strong, why not make it even stronger? Edited January 8, 2005 by Fadix

I do agree with you in terms of proteins it would yield results much sooner then SETI. There is a good book http://www.mkaku.org by Dr. Michio Kaku. “Visions” he talks about what will come down the road in the next 2 decades and SETI is not included lol but great advances in genetics, proteins ..... SETI is not useless at all there are dozens of PhD’s working on it. It is unfair to discard their work especially when none of us has their knowledge. p.s. I am happy that group is folding proteins and doing our part no matter how big or small it is. SETI and folding are 2 different topics full of pros and cons. I understand that you discussed and found SETI worthless and want to move on. Personally I don’t think SETI is worthless but one of the most exciting events of human civilization if we ever find aliens. With our without our support for folding it will happen by 2020, but with SETI it might be thousand years down the road. Nonetheless, personally I am more fascinated with SETI then proteins. This thread is based on proteins that’s why I get such a fierce resistance on SETI. Perhaps I should start another one lol (don’t worry at all it will not be based on how many people sign up for SETI@home …. that will be discouraged … just open mind and interest in the universe we live in.) I know that if we get result it will change humanity for ever. But don't forget the NASA project for 2010 or so, the planet finder, that will be a LOT more practical.
