  1. Hi guys if you are interested please attend. Hope to see all there. Armenian Engineers and Scientists of America, Inc. 417 W. 2. As an armo I am happy to see us in scientific arena. I do agree with you in terms of proteins it would yield results much sooner then SETI. There is a good book http://www.mkaku.org by Dr. Michio Kaku. “Visions” he talks about what will come down the road in the next 2 decades and SETI is not included lol but great advances in genetics, proteins ..... SETI is not useless at all there are dozens of PhD’s working on it. It is unfair to discard their work especially when none of us has their knowledge. p.s. I am happy that group is folding proteins and doing our part no matter how big or small it is. SETI and folding are 2 different topics full of pros and cons. I understand that you discussed and found SETI worthless and want to move on. Personally I don’t think SETI is worthless but one of the most exciting events of human civilization if we ever find aliens. With our without our support for folding it will happen by 2020, but with SETI it might be thousand years down the road. Nonetheless, personally I am more fascinated with SETI then proteins. This thread is based on proteins that’s why I get such a fierce resistance on SETI. Perhaps I should start another one lol (don’t worry at all it will not be based on how many people sign up for SETI@home …. that will be discouraged … just open mind and interest in the universe we live in.)
  3. ArmeEngine, Thank you for challenging our imagination! For the record, I understand "ignore" in the statement above as "do not/cannot know/estimate the value;" NOT as "dismiss, disregard or overlook." For instance, for practical purposes, what "stars suitable for the development of intelligent life" could mean? We can hardly define "intelligence?" So it would be difficult to estimate/evalaute: "The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life." style_images/master/snapback.png It’s not right to base your opinions on lack of understanding. Your argument is inherently void. Discarding a equation just because you know what lets say "stars suitable for the development of intelligent life" means is funny to me. You can make a much stronger case by arguing against the assumptions made in the equation. For example you can argue that Variables in the equation assume that variables are statistically independent or Fermi paradox, anthropic principle..... Argument based on scientific principles not personal beliefs. My 2 cents
  4. SETI and folding proteins are = apple vs orange I am in no way trying to take people away from folding proteins i think its cool. Founding "SETI team" in terms of taking people away from folding is not my intention at all. Just interesting that Armenians did the SETI analysis for Soviets back then. Joining SETI@home wont really help find aliens they need more sensitive equipment and more radio telescopes to scan instead.
  5. lol if u ignore one parameter in any equation its will be worthless as well. SETI is based on the idea behind this equation. Drake is one of founding fathers for SETI ...
  6. Aper es SETI haykakan papakan bana Byurakan SETI conferences (1964 and 1971) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Two important early meetings on the subject of SETI held at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory. The 1964 Conference on Extraterrestrial Civilizations stemmed from discussions by Shklovskii's group at the Sternberg State Astronomical Institute and was organized by Nikolai Kardashev. Held three years after the seminal Green Bank conference (1961), it was attended entirely by radio astronomers and had as its aim "to obtain rational technical and linguistic solutions for the problem of communication with extraterrestrial civilizations which are much more advanced than the Earth civilization." The emphasis on (a) communication, and ( the broadcasting of powerful signals by highly advanced intelligence from great distances (possibly even extragalactic), was in contrast to the greater attention paid in the United States to searching for messages from nearby stars and civilizations more on a par with our own. The Soviet approach was typified by Kardashev's classification scheme for technological races (see Kardashev civilizations) and Troitskii's interest in the possibility of detecting signals from other galaxies.1 The 1971 Byurakan conference was the first international SETI meeting and was sponsored by the Academies of Sciences of both the Soviet Union and the United States. Ambartsumian, Kardashev, Shklovskii, and Troitskii carried out the organization on the Soviet side, while Drake, Morrison, and Sagan performed the same function on the American side. Participants included 28 Soviets, 15 Americans, and 4 scientists from other nations. Radio search methods, techniques and consequences of contact, message content, and extraterrestrial astroengineering were among the topics discussed. A tentative conclusion of the conference was that there might be a million technical civilizations in the Galaxy, although it was recognized that the Drake Equation gave a subjective rather than an objective probability.2 References -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. 7. I will be taking CCNA class along with couple of friends if you are interested let me know. The classes will be in Woodland Hills CA and go for about $590 but we can negotiate a deal down to $450. Its an Indian place but teachers are fluent in English lol Let me know if you are interested ASAP. Several guys who are interested in the project are taking the classes will be good opportunity to meet and create biz/friendly relationship. Edgar
  8. The Drake Equation How can we estimate the number of technological civilizations that might exist among the stars? While working as a radio astronomer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia, Dr. Frank Drake (now Chairman of the Board of the SETI Institute) conceived an approach to bound the terms involved in estimating the number of technological civilizations that may exist in our galaxy. The Drake Equation, as it has become known, was first presented by Drake in 1961 and identifies specific factors thought to play a role in the development of such civilizations. Although there is no unique solution to this equation, it is a generally accepted tool used by the scientific community to examine these factors. --Frank Drake, 1961 N = R * f p n e f l f i f c L Where, N = The number of civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy whose radio emissions are detectable. R* = The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life. f p = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems. n e = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life. fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears. f i = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges. f c = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space. L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space. http://www.seti.org/site/pp.asp?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=179073 http://www.seti.org/site/pp.asp?c=ktJ2J9MMIsE&b=178919

  11. Moso I will stop insulting you and respect your code of conduct (which i wasn’t aware of) ... you can stop your power-trip as admin. Simple PM would of fixed everything which u did do then posted on the board to ... rather harsh response on ur end. But anyways I would encourage people who are interested in the Idea to reply back to me. I do apologize for the past several posts. We are looking for people that are certified: Microsoft MCSE 2k+ Cisco (CCNP+) Vendors Certs (HP,Dell,IBM) Security Cert (ISC)2 CISSP Trainer Certs Big Plus If you know anyone who might be interested please let me know. Regards, Edgar
  12. lolol good one did you know that not even 1% of people on this group have original ideas. Color red is red in USA and in Armenia. IT consulting firm is same here or in Armenia. I think you are confused I am rather sure that nothing you typed here is original its based on work or ideas someone else has which was feed to you over the years. You are paraphrasing people. Read couple of MS and PhD level papers you will see that almost everything is "quoted" or in references. Unless you are some Einstein or Galileo, refrain from further baseless comments. Edgar
