I am really terrible, as you found out from a recent thread, with remembering phone numbers, addresses, dates and other important information. I usually keep little notebooks to record vital stuff, including facts, quotes and new words. As a result I have 4 notebooks all together, and it's hard to know which one to bring. So for example when I am out and I want to remember a place in a particular area, my mind is blank. So I figured that a PDA would be helpful. Do any of you own one, and how useful is it really? Never the less I will. But first let me tell you that I have owned one for the last 6-7 years. First a Palm II, then a Sony Clie(I wish I remember the number, I will check tonight)(I loved that one). I can't do without it. I sync with my outlook. I keep all kinds of stuff on it and will be lost without it. I surf the web and read mail and even post on hyeForum while sitting by the pool. My most recent PDA is a Dell Axim. Yes I moved from a palm os to windows mobile os. I LOVE it. I have wifi, bluetooth, and IR on it for communication. It is a great little PDA working at 600+ mhz with 64ram and 64 rom. I have added 256 sd card as well(got it from buy.com for 7 dollars if you would believe that). It is the most reasonably priced win based PDA I could find. Something like 279. The palm devices are cheaper and many are great as well. I personally love the Sonys. Something like that. The rest of the time, I just keep upgrading it, playing with it, installing new software on it ... I used to use it to surf the web at home. Now it is used as my "fancy" remote control. I have this software that I can use to learn the codes from all my remotes and then program my own macros and what not. I also have it setup to download the satellite TV program listing off of dish network. So in theory, I can browse the program listing on the PDA, and just tap a button and have it put my box on the right channel. Do I use it? Hell no. Do I feel really good the way I have it set up? Absolutely It's a geek's dream toy. So my advice is, if you actually think getting one of these is going to help you become more organized, etc etc ... I'd say don't waste your money. If you want one for the coolness, gadgety, new-toy factor and you want to play with it, then GO FOR IT. As Azat said, go for a windows CE (PocketPC) based one ... preferably something with a strongArm chip. For some reason I think you'll like that chip, even if it's just for its name's sake My organization is now done on my NEC TabletPC. I find it MUCH more useful than a PDA. Yah life is tough ... Note also that I'm not saying a tablet PC is the way to go for everyone. It just happened to be the right one for my case. Top model Dell Axim X30, will cost you about $300, and you can usually find them on sale. It's a very good PDA, with very fast processor. Link to the review of Dell Axim X30. Hope it helps. Dell pdas do look impressive, however I refuse to be lured into their manipulative tactics. After some reasoning I've decided not to buy one just yet. The price is not written in the stars for me, and I am not sure if I really will use it as often as I think. For now I'll concentrate on buying other necessities. Thank you. In case you change your mind, the only other viable alternative in the same processor range (aka intel XSCALE PXA270) would be the iPaq (now by HP). I think for that kind of money though (i.e. several hundred dollars) a traditional paper and pencil type solution still seems quite adequate. Yes ... I was the one who said that last sentence! Edit: By the way, I've noticed a few other people as well as myself move to the more "online" calendar/information management type system ... the one I'm using is yahoo calendar. I simply syncronize it with my outlook on my tabletPC. So I rely on outlook when I have it around and then easily switch to yahoo when my own PC is not available or I'm at work. All the changes get synced in the end so it doesn't matter where I do my changes (work, home, traveling, library, etc). ... and best of all, it's free ... also quite practical since there are usually PC's around with some type of internet connection (at least for me anyway). Actually I've created an email account just for myself, which serves a online database for me. All my tech. tips, addresses and other info are gathered in one and are accessible from anywhere that way, I don't have to walk around with leafs of paper sticking out of my pockets and serving as cushions in my bags. Chances are you wont use more then 40% of the functionality that it offers. so at least pick something that you like truth is 100% of vendors have functions that are identical so every pda's 90% of same options and functions as the next one. Pick one with nice colors that you think looks good.... just don’t go to cheap If you get really expensive fancy one remember this its just ROLADEX!!!
