Stormig
While I agree that whoever calls themselves an Armenian may be an Armenian (I actually don't believe there would be such a discussion or issue of one calling oneself what and thence what they are amongst, say, Eskimos), I suppose it is also an issue at some point to have a fair "standard," if you will, in this matter. I've noted how some Armenian foundations, when selecting candidates for scholarships, have to stick with Armenians and hence end up asking for baptismal certificates and such, among a number of things, perhaps (but not entirely sure there) asking for parents' vitals and all. sp0ke
My grandfather was an Armenian, my father is half and I've got an Armenian name so I guess that makes me 1/4 Armenian.
Artsakh
more important than armenian blood, is armenian mentality, a sence of being armenian. someone can be pure armenian, yet be completely Americanized, turkishized, or whatever ized. in such case, they will serve and preserve not armenian culture, but whatever culture they've assimilated. in such case, so what if they have 100% armenian blood? it will not stop them from feeling like an american or whatever. where is the benefit to the armenian culture? America-Hye
A person who is Armenian by blood, yet not Armenian by mentality, who nevertheless speaks the Armenan language and knows our history can be very valuable to the future of Armenia and the Armenain Cause. The Jews have perfected this approach, while we languish in our failures. Don't you all understand that the collective Armenian psyche has been detrimental? koko
I dont agree. Someone who wants to destroy the armenian culture and tradition is not welcome; dont matter how much armenian blood he or she might have. Anileve
After 7 pages I would hope that everyone finally understood what it is to be an Armenian. I could have summed it up with just one statement though: "An Armenian is one who eternally questions what is a an Armenian." I doubt it's a question that an otar would ask, he/she will just accept it for what it is. I wonder if any other nationality questions their national makeup. Hmmm..... Well I better run out of this one, I can already hear Vigil's hounds.

But I was serious. Your answer was very philosophical, the kind that I think about when I meditate.
America-Hye
koko, Fine-tuning Armenian culture and traditions does not equate with destroying them. You sound just like a Taliban, who wants to restore Islamic nations to the traditions of the 6th century. Animal sacrifices at Armenian churches should be stopped. Women should be given total equality in Armenian society. THe collusion between the Armenian Church and the Armenian government must cease. Discrimination against homosexuals and bisexuals should cease.
koko
well, it depends on what fine tuning means. I for one wouldnt like to make armenia into public property! And the ones who could make that happen is fortune seekers -american and israeli intrests. "the jews have perfected it", is what you said. I dont see how this could happen. We are not a parasite religion...we are a nation who unfortunaly as you say craw around in its missfortunes much to often, looking for perfection, But i dont anything perfect about jews, rather the opposite. America-Hye
Koko, How do you think that Britain, the US and so many other nations throughout history became strong? By sucking the economic blood of other nations. With globalisation the formula has changed. Armenia has few natural resources, but a highly-educated populace. It has no choice but to enter the world market. The Armenian church is losing parishoners. Legislating against the competition is only a stop-gap measure. Satisfying their spiritual needs would be a much more effective approach.
koko
Armenia has few natural resources, but a highly-educated populace. I stand somewhat suspicios of that statement. Not anymore, we dont. Britain and US is not armenia. We have totally different standing points, and we are different nations.armenias must seek to their own intrests. we already have sold out half of armenia. globalisation means americans taken over armenia. Armen
Either Yerevan will become a suburb of Glendale, or Armenia will die. The march of the future will trample your dead body. I will not let the likes of you stand in the way of a prosperous Armenia. And you're the one who's advocating civil rights fro gays, bi-s, dogs and cats... People like you present themselves as tolerant because of being bi, gay or whatever have the same exact amount of intolerance as anyone else... America-Hye
Please follow the thread and you will see that I was playing on Koko's own words. Where do you find intolerance in that?
koko
he is right. And btw. you will drive over an armenian just for the sake of???...MONEy? prosperity, youve got it all wrong, the armenians are the ones that will help armenia to make it a better place for us all. Not the americans, at least that is not what is in the intrest for most of the jews. they like you, dont give a DAMN about armenians. America-Hye
I want to see the majority of Armenian citizens find the good-life right in the ROA instead of leaving the country to find it.
Angelina
“If a people loose its language, it's looses its major way of distinguishing itself from the rest... don't forget, that an important part of the culture dies with it, such as art, literature, any written part of their history that is transmitted by this language..” True Domino, but it is a wrong philosophy to think that those Armenians who do not speak Armenian are not Armenians! The reason why I brought the question up because I myself have seen many Armenians who did not speak Armenian for variety of reasons, were always isolated and treated badly from those who did speak Armenian. For instance still now days if you go to Armenia you would hear people saying your irana hay, your amerga hay etc.. Your Armenian is not proper Armenian and so on…. so I disagree when it comes to judging someone just because of how well they speak Armenian. They might not speak any Armenian, but in their hearts they are always Armenians.
Artsakh
no one is questioning whether you're armenian or not based on where you were born or whether or not you speak armenian. there is a difference b/w where a person is from, speaking/not speaking armenian, and having a sence of armenianness. for example, the great legendary hero himself Monte Melkonyan. now here is an example of what an Armenian is. He was born in the United States, his parents were born in the United States. Monte grew up surrounded by American culture, and his parents did NOT speak a single word of Armenian. However, Monte had a sence of Armenianness despite all that. Now you tell me, who questions Monte's being armenian? today, Monte is labeled the "commander of Artsakh's army"- artsakhi hramanadar Monte Melkonyan. he is the soul of Artsakhs army. In the words of Monte's father: "you cannot be a good citizen of any country, if you don't know and respect your own roots first and foremost." so instead of finding excuses, try to be a good armenian. Armenians in Armenia are a people who have great love for its people in the diaspora. There is a statue of Charles Aznavura in Armenia, and during its opening the entire city of Gyumri where it opened was present to honor this "great son of armenia". gamavor
Here is what Radio Yerevan has to say on the subject: Group of concerned HyeForumers call Radio Yerevan: - Please explain to us what is an Armenian? America-Hye
I speak Armenian and have immersed myself in Armenian history, but because I am AC/DC and no longer a member of an Christian church many Armenians state that I am not an Armenian.
